  • The full breakdown of my daily Japanese study routine that I started using my first week of learning Japanese-I didn't even have hiragana and katakana memorized yet! I was studying for at least 4 hours every day during my first 2 months of studying the Japanese language (the silver lining of my job falling through last summer 😅) and was focused on building my Japanese vocabulary, learning kanji, gaining familiarity with Japanese grammar structures and listening to lots of Japanese!

    Hi, I'm Alivia! I started learning Japanese in the summer of 2020. I'm using this channel to share my study approach, my progress, and as an outlet for all my Japanese "study research". Language learning can be a messy progress, so I hope to share what I've learned from all the bumps along the road. I also speak French, a little bit of Spanish, and my current goal is to pass the JLPT N3. Join me!

    We have such similar japanese study journeys!! I remember going through genki and seeing the exercises that seemed super useless and skipping them. And then eventually discovering Anki (thank god)
    and yeah i also definitely agree on a zero comparison policy... there are plenty of people who have passed N1. its easy to look at that and feel like "oh shit. i have so far to go" when you should been looking at how far you've come

    I took a really different approach. I started with learning the kanji first using the MIA Anki deck. Just the first 1000 common kanji and giving them English associations. Like half a hour every day. It's been 2 months and I'm just nearly at seeing 100% of the desk at the end of this week. I'm planning getting into Genki after it. But in the last 2 months I've just been on Duolingo and Memrize to ease into things. This was also a commitment test as I didn't want to buy a book and just go meh after a week.
    The best thing is though most of the kanji i see on the sites has been recognizable and that made it easier to put a Japanese word on them.

    Super helpful! If I may add a tip-- It's really really great to be able to be using the words and grammar in context with a speaking partner. A girl I used to have class with would meet me at a cafe, we'd grab a coffee and then get out our textbooks. We'd set a timer for 10 minutes, speaking about a certain given topic with only the vocabulary we knew. It was super great practice to try and speak our way around things we weren't really sure how to say. Highly recommend for other students/self-taught people!

    thank you for this! i have always had an affinity for language learning- i have been learning japanese on and off for a few years but right now im about a month into consistent studying... and oh my god i hit a wall. with the other languages i learned (spanish and latin) i was forced to pace myself and now that I can go at my own pace, ive flown through 8 or 9 units and im starting to feel overwhelmed. i learned hiragana, katakana, a couple of kanji and grammar and words and everything in the same month. I've retained nearly all of it but when i go to my lessons, i often feel like im about to explode because everything comes together all at once (im sure you understand how it is to "turn off english" and "turn on" the other languages). i also think im overcomplicating my studies- i recently started using multiple methods to learn and i think those (about 4 different resources) combined with me learning everything else is giving me a headache. this video was very useful, im going to try some of these methods and maybe focus on perfecting what I have already learned before moving on.

    Magnificent video! Many thanks to the author of the channel for the recommendations! The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot's Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video! Your videos motivate me.

    Hi, Alivia!
    Thank you for your videos and all the useful tips! (and the link to the spotify playlist :)
    I have a couple of questions:
    1) Did listening to Japanese speech in the beginning (without understanding much) help to improve listening comprehension later along your journey as you became more proficient?
    2) What would have you prioritized if you only had an hour a day to practice? I've taken to a more slow-paced approach. So far, I've mastered the kana, learned about a hundred words and some basic grammar structures...

    • @AliviasNook
      @AliviasNook  3 роки тому +5

      Hi Alexey, thanks for the comment!
      1) I think listening to the spoken language is SUPER important because it basically worms the language into your brain haha, and it does take many hours to be able to understand. For that reason I'm glad I started early, but think working in something like @Comprehensible Japanese would have made my progress faster as it's easy to follow along.
      2) I think one of the biggest hurdles for Japanese is kanji/vocabulary that use kanji, because you will be limited in the types of immersion material you can use to really improve later on. For an hour a day, I'd say ~30mins of kanji/vocab and ~30mins of watching something in Japanese would be your best bet 😊

    I've noticed that I learn best by focusing on one particular area at a time so would you recommend I improve my vocabulary first through Anki? or just jump straight into learning hiragana and katakana first? Again, I appreciate your content! :)

    • @AliviasNook
      @AliviasNook  3 роки тому +2

      Glad you're finding it helpful! I really wanted to make videos that are easy to follow along and realistic to what my experience has been so far.
      Focusing on one area can be a good strategy, especially if you have less time to work with. I'd say start with Hiragana and Katakana, because you will need to know those in order to be read the vocabulary you are learning (move away from romaji asap!). Once you've got the hang of it and know how to use a kana chart, try learning some base vocabulary with Anki. You may find it easier to only learn kana words (ie. skip words that contain kanji) until you have 100+ words under your belt

      Not currently, but I’ve been considering making one! What kind of stuff would you want to see? I’ve been looking at other study accounts and they have beautiful photos of their notebooks, but I rarely take notes and can’t say my routine is very ✨aesthetic✨

      @@AliviasNook Honestly, I don’t have a criteria. I follow accounts that have structured language posts, others just post daily pics of their study or a story here and there maybe get a tip from that or just random pics. For me its just about having fun and enjoying it with other language learners. If it feels like school, I don’t want it. (Studying, not your channel 😁) 👍🏼☺️

      Ok cool, thanks for your thoughts! I like the idea of it being a casual place to connect with all you fellow language learners and chat with you more directly. I'll probably make one in the coming weeks 🤞
