My question to Gain of Function is: Did it help so far in anyway to predict, treat and develop a vaccine?
To my knowledge: No, no and no.
So, why not play around with viruses that can't harm humans?
Sounds to me that rewards vs risks business case is not paying off today!!
Unless you have a deep comprehensive knowledge of all gain of function research done world wide, there is no way you can render an opinion that involves risk vs rewards regarding GOF research. Neither can I.

I can't help but ask myself, what is the profitability of gain of function research? These people are spending ungodly amounts of money developing vaccines for diseases that may never even exist, or at least probably won't exist for tens or even hundreds of years. Call me crazy if you want to but rich people don't seem to historically spend gobs of money on humanitarian efforts. If they did, world hunger would have been solved by now. Vaccines for diseases that may never even exist doesn't seem like a very safe investment. It's simply not profitable when compared to how much they spend on this process. You know what is profitable though? Bio weapons.

This seemed like a hit piece to acknowledge but then suppress the lab leak hypothesis, before signing off with “we may never know the origins”. Absolutely diluted attempt at explaining GoF and the origin of Covid. Daniela, you’ve allowed your journalism to be hijacked by your scientific colleague.

Totally wrong .
GOF is here to stay. If the other side is doing it we in the West must follow. We can’t have a major outbreak of a bioweapon directed towards the West without having the ability to have a vaccine on hand. We can try to increase Bio Safety through international treaties, but we will never be able to say that this type of research is not being done somewhere on the planet. The labs are just too small and can be located anywhere.
Gain of function exleriments in Wuhan lab were directly funded by the USA.
GOF is no good at producing a bioweapons.... because releasing lab modify pathogen has too much unknowns and you do not want to kill off your own populous. Most biological agents selected for weapons research are existing pathogen out in the wild that have quick onset period, cause severe illness but is readily curable. They must also be relatively stable so your cure will continue to work incase its spreads to your soldiers.
MOST virology research could be considered gain-of-function research with a broad enough definition. The debate is a political straw man.

Exactly. Pathogens are bread all the time for research and mutations do happen. Even bacteria that are engineered to eat plastic is GOF.
Virology is not Gain of Function. Gain of Function is a subset of virology and it is very clear what it is. Its an absolutely silky ans dangerous practice and ought to be stooped
