As a scientist myself and a medical doctor I see this kind of research dangerous not because it was the possibility to create cheap bio weapons but because there aren't any notable gains.

What I mean by that is that it is weaponized, yes, but not in a way that it was intended to be some bio weapon or something like that. It's mentioned in the video that gain of function research is used to better understand the virus and to better prepare us in case the virus causes a pandemic. However, despite the good intention, I don't feel comfortable supporting this kind of thing because this doesn't seem safe. But idk I'm not a virologist so what do I know 🤷♀️

A long time ago when I was a Masters's student, my project was to mix two viruses and make a new one and study the infectivity and other characters of the new virus. We were dealing with the loss of function research where you hope to generate a harmless virus. Recombinant viruses are a core and routine thing for thousands of virology labs around the world and it is an exciting prospect for virologists. The experiments are pretty easy for anyone with basic biology lab experience. Most of the time these studies are done in BSL 2 facilities. I have always wondered, what if we unleashed a monster virus through these studies.
Therein lies a problem the field of virology is ripe for discovery, this translates to doctorates for the picking, the odd Nobel Prize and of course patents. Those who manage to get key patents will become millionaires, even billionaires.
As someone said in the video, if gain of functions was such benefitial then how come there is still no treatment for covid despite the fact they were working on coronaviruses for ages? Nothing of benefit has come of such research, and already it has caused enough chaos.

The main issue, which is not mentioned at all in this video, is that this is clearly related to bio weapons. Now if - say - western countries stop this kind of research, there's no doubt that some other countries (do I need to mention which one in particular?) will keep researching on this and use it as threat. We do not even manage viruses in PC, we should stick to our boundaries.
Its not in our human nature to be restrained by boundaries. Getting to know things and trying to understand everything starts when youre born and only ends at the moment of death. Research will always be done if youre not being restrained by a power other than possible death from your experiments but by lets say the government. And if theres a use for it, be it for the military or for economical advantages, they wont stop anyone.

Gain Of Function vs. Loss Of Function, means that a harmless to human virus becomes harmful to humans.
It's not so much about disabling or even removing limitations but enhancing the virus so that it can work in the human body.
Think of it as a fish hook. If a fish hook becomes stretched and straightens out then it loses its function and can no longer hook into fish. This is Loss-of-Function.
A normal fish hook will hook into fish.
But a Gain-of-Function fish hook will have multiple hooks added to it so that it can hook into more things.
The Flu is a loss of function virus.
COVID-19 is the result of the bat corona virus being enhanced so that it became infections to humans. It was given gain-of-function. Which is why COVID is known as Gain-of-Function.
The fact that it is mutating is also a result of gain-of-function.
Learnt something new today with this documentary, and then thought of a news I read at breakfast this morning (of China rejecting phase 2 covid origin study). It’s time to get to the truth, however harsh it may look like.

My point was that we do whatever even is but slightly effective to get the virus down, because we have to, or suffer the consequences of it mutating constanly in the population. And facemasks are worn to protect the community. If two are naked and one starts to pee, the other may get wet. He can put on a pair of jeans, but then still gets wet. If however the one peeing wears jeans, no-one beside the pee-er gets wet.
The final sentence, where the anchor makes a presumption that GoF research is being done in good faith for the public benefit, is certainly a dubious one.

You have not done biology lab then. We accelerate things to do the research. Lethality is of course dangerous to play with, but they are increasingly infectivity not lethality, to quickly test on infected mice and so on.
