Viruses keep jumping out of nature and into humans and getting us very sick in the process. So why do zoonotic spillovers like SARS-CoV-2 happen, and why are they becoming more frequent? We asked an expert.

SARS-CoV-2 wasn't the first virus to jump from animals into humans, and it won't be the last. I learned a lot making this video and I hope you do too.

Important note: SARS-COV-2 is not "fast mutating". As far as viruses go, it mutates pretty slow. It proofreads it's genome while replicating, which keeps the mutation rate low.
I think they mean it's rna based, not DNA based. So it has more errors when it duplicates.
@@nosuchthing8 That's true, DNA viruses have lower mutation rates. Compared to influenza or HIV, for example, I believe SARS-COV-2 has a lower mutation rate. Mostly I wanted to point this out so that people do not think SARS-COV-2 is exceptionally fast at mutating/evolving. Of course, all viruses mutate fast compared to bacteria, animals, etc. so it's all about context.
@kevinhackbarth9617 covid is enabled based, hence it has a higher replication rate failure.
COVID-19, short for “coronavirus disease 2019,” is caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Like many other viruses, SARS-CoV-2 is an RNA virus. This means that, unlike in humans and other mammals, the genetic material for SARS-CoV-2 is encoded in ribonucleic acid (RNA).Dec 14, 2020

@@xian1297 nope
@@xian1297 Wendover Productions makes a lot of videos about airplanes, it’s kinda turned into a joke
Thanks so much for the non-technical, realistic delivery of this message.
VIDEOHEREBOB I’ve watched many videos on this subject, this has to be the only one that had me nodding my head in understanding and agreement.
@@esoh4t484 I agree! There's nothing gained when they try to impress us with big words and authoritative slants.
Despite all of our conflicts, humans are incredibly social. I was amazed to see that despite being warned about social distancing, people could not STAY AWAY FROM EACH OTHER.
Even at the risk of a potentially deadly Covid.
We're a perfect species for any virus!
Some people can. Some people don't care. Some people can't.
We should point out livestock is responsible for some of the most devastating epidemics in human history. Measles, tuberculosis and smallpox jumped to humans from cows, the flu and whooping cough from pigs and ducks, and malaria from livestock birds. Currently, intensive livestock is causing new types of flus and many other new infectious diseases.
We do have to become aware of our place in nature, and that also means becoming aware of what we eat and how we produce food.
I was wondering how did this video cover so much without even mentioning domestic animals? Especially domestic animals that we cram together for extended periods in unsanitary conditions for at least a part of their lives.
Super Super Super Super True....we have to change a lot...I guess we as might have to change completely if we to survive more time than dinosaurs did....we are such a relatively super young species and already funnily the only one who is trying to extinct itself knowing about it.....lol.....The smartest stupidest species ever born.....Both a Gift and a curse.....Thanks for sharing your thoughts bro....
@agkl Well going vegan could be a solution, but we could just eat very small amounts of meat and switch from having big, unsanitary farms to more small and sanitary ones.
@agkl Right! A well planned vegan diet of whole foods is healthier too. Vegans have lower rates of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and certain types of cancer. Vegans tend to live longer too.
@@morganrobinson4741 Your suggestion would help, but widespread switching to a vegan diet is the most effective option to prevent another pandemic. The more people who switch, the better. Not only to avoid epidemics. Cattle produce a lot of methane which is 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide for climate change.
That Wendover Productions cameo was unexpected but defenitely very welcome.
I enjoyed it as well but I don't think that was technically a cameo

Ah ok I get it now. I was also unsure of the reference
This video is an accurate, informative, and worthwhile introduction to the very basics of virology, given less than 15 minutes. Considering the time constraint of 15 minutes and the accuracy of the information presented, this is an excellent must see video for everyone during these COVID-19 times.
Except he keeps contradicting his own expert. For example he keeps saying the virus jumps and the experts says it does not. This guy just packages knowledge from other people in cliches, but still gets some of it wrong.
Love the evil Wendover logo when talking about air travel! 😂

I can assure you that, among competent physicians, this was never a "fringe" view, at least not in the last 80 yrs. or so. @Natasha Geisler I’m vegan but actually viruses come from meat that are badly cooked so eat really clean meat but the best way would still be to become vegan

This is a really great explanation that is easy to follow. Well done
I was waiting for you to explain how we need to change our behaviors to help prevent another pandemic. Are you going to write Part 2?
Hopefully he addresses the elephant in the room, factory farming...
@@WeissM89 Right. Animal exploitation in general, but especially factory farming.
Be vegan.
Need to avoid all contact with genetically close-ish animals. From past viruses looks like only fish, reptiles, amphibians are safe? Would need to destroy the livestock industry and get rid majority of pets (non-aquatic). Then reduce cross-species virus hopping by preventing unnatural animal contact with each other (zoos, markets, farms). Be super careful with birds/mosquitoes? So in conclusion, its unrealistic to stop another pandemic. Luckily they seem to only appear every 10 years or so.
@@rikkenhelcate9868 We don't have to choose all or none. We do not need to eat animal products at all, but reducing the threat by eliminating beef and dairy would be a good place to start. It would also remove the type of animal products that contribute the most to climate change. Methane produced by cows is 20-80 times more problematic than carbon dioxide. Animal agriculture contributes more to climate change than all transportation combined!

I'm curious the role viruses will have in the future. They seem like a neat tool to use to add DNA or RNA in organisms. Once we are able to manipulate them precisely, we'd be able to use them for all sorts of things. The future is going to be so interesting
