  • In this video I show you one of reasons why the bobbin winder of sewing machine not works correctly. One of the reasons is the rubber ring has a worn edge. If the edge of the rubber ring is worn, the bobbin winder will not work correctly. To increase the diameter of the rubber ring you can use a common sewing thread. The video will be helpful mostly when you will repair bobbin winder on old models sewing machine.

    They don't make parts for my very old Sears Kenmore machine, so this hack saved my bacon. Thanks for posting!

    Excellent video, very clear and solves the problem. The thread was brilliant! One other solution would be to wind some Teflon Tape around the ring spool and the yellow gas Teflon tape is thicker. This clings well.
    Before putting back, scrub down the metal parts (not O ring) with mineral spirits and 000 or 0000 steel wool. All the old oil comes off, and aluminum or steel parts are shined up. Then wash off with toothbrush, Awesome Cleaner (dollar store) which is a degreaser and stain remover on the plastic and metal, and soap off with dishwashing soap. Dry. Lube joints with Triflow Silicone Lube keeping it away from the plastic and O ring. It won't harm either one but you want that to be oil free. The benefit of silicone is that it is synthetic and won't degrade with heat and turn gummy and sticky with time and heat from machine operation and lightbulb. That is what makes all these old machine parts sticky - wrong oil. While you are at it, replace all incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs - make sure it is same base- single or double contact, bayonet or screw in mount. Measure bulb length - can be shorter or a bit longer. Base diameter should match. Base information is one of the types I mentioned above. Some LED bulbs are dipped in silicone and are wonderful! Better than plastic or glass casing for the LEDs.

    This worked perfectly for me, I didn't have to change the rubber. I just added a lot of thread and I put the old rubber back. Thanks

    In a pinch you can use 2 garden hose washer/gaskets. Just take the rubber off the wheel and install the 2 water hose gaskets. I did it and it works fine, My wife is happy and I had the gaskets in my shop

    Thank you so much! This fixed my issue about 80%, might just need to put more string on. But at least I can wind a bobbin now, even if it catches once in a while!

    This seems a wonderful tip but when i tried to remove the rubber ring it broke completely as it was so old. Now i need to find one of these rings!

      I successfully sourced another rubber ring, my winder now runs perfectly. Thanks for sharing how to manage fixing my bobbin winder, that has saved me some money

    I tried this and it didn't work. My husband (has a BA in Industrial Design) says try a rubber band instead of string. So I tried that, and it worked!!! Thanks for a great video example, two heads are always better than one!

    Im having a different issue. The bobbin spins fine, but it doesnt lock the needle anymore, so the needle and foot just goes wild while im winding a bobbin

    I feel like I'm missing the end of the video. what do you do next?
    could this be the reason my bobbin winder does not spin when it is engaged with a bobbin on it? it spins of it's empty. It's a 1008. thanks.

    • @steeb4144
      @steeb4144 2 роки тому

      That's likely. If the rubber ring is too worn it won't gain the right amount of friction to drive with tension/weight added. I'm not familiar with the 1008 in particular, but sometimes you can allot for the loss of spacing with this trick, a new tire, or by moving the tire track nearer to the tire.

    Is the reason why my bobbin winder gets stuck and doesn't want to spin because the rubber is dull?

    • @sewway

      One of the many reasons

    • @t.grimes9973
      @t.grimes9973 Рік тому

      Yes, if it no longer has a beveled edge, it won't catch to spin/sew.

    My pin the top part where you put the bobbin on. Came out of the socket. When I tried to pull the bobbin off. So now when I try to put it back it sits really loose and i'm not able to use it. Because it won't spin anymore. Please help.

    • @sewway
      @sewway  3 роки тому

      You will need to remove the entire device. The easiest, but not very reliable way is to attach the wheel to the pin with a very strong glue.
      But if you do not have experience, it is better to contact to repairman, perhaps he will replace this device with a new one.

      @@sewway thank you for the fast reply. My husband took a look and said ohh this happened before when my dad was using my sewing machine. I had no idea the same thing already happend before...
      I think in this case it's best not to DIY it again. So to the repairman then! Thanks

      I went to the repair woman and she told me she doesn’t has any parts for my brand. I watched a few more videos and tried to take a look at the inside of my machine myself. A lot of loose screws and parts fell out when I opened it. Also my main plug socket was falling apart. Just little pieces I think because of our hot climate here. It just kinda gave out around the screws. So I borrowed my mother in law’s machine. But it was a vintage one. But I couldn’t figure out why it starts sewing as soon as it gets plugged into the socket. Even on off and without touching the foot peddle. So I gave in and bought a new one.

      Nothing wrong. There is an old grandfather's way. Putting a bobbin on an awl, wind some thread by hand and slide it towards the flywheel. Turn on your sewing machine without threads and wind the bobbin. Lift a presser foot while winding.

      They are not in spare parts, you can probably buy them, but you need to see a lot of announcements.

    I replaced the rubber ring, still not working. I added elastic underneath, still not working. The spinning part just isn't catching the rubber, it's shredding it up. I don't know what to do 😐

    • @sewway
      @sewway  2 роки тому

      It is necessary to adjust the degree of pressing the ring into the flywheel, there are special screws

  • @ellaraeheyns7132
    @ellaraeheyns7132 3 роки тому

    Ooh, I thought it just wasn’t working because it’s been worn smooth so there isnt enough resistance

    • @steeb4144
      @steeb4144 2 роки тому

      This is technically still the case, but the rubber creates resistance with the correct amount of pressure alloted. By adding thread and slightly increasing diameter, you're bringing the rubber nearer to where it was originally.

    • @t.grimes9973
      @t.grimes9973 Рік тому

      Yes, this is why the ring won't turn any longer. Adding string will make it larger and add resistance to cause it to spin/sew again.

    You didn't spin the wheel once while moving it around for 2 minutes. I wonder why :) that would have been the first thing to do. Anyway, on mine the problem is the shaft itself is way too tight from the factory, I will have to replace the entire assembly with another one that spins freely. Also, make sure you clean with some alcohol the 'gripping' area on the hand wheel, where the rubber is running, this surface gets small bits of rubber which cause the wheel to slip rather that 'grip'
