  • New main machine! After starting a new position + having to go back to school, I need a laptop; And what better one than the most powerful Intel MacBook Pro! Figured I'd consolidate my home and work machines into one with this purchase, and i'm VERY impressed with this machine for the price.

I bought this laptop in 2021 and It's a great machine! I purchased this model from a befriended developer (32GB RAM, 2TB SSD, Radeon Pro 5500m 8GB).
    The Pros:
    - The 16 inch screen is great. Perfect for audio production and video editing.
    - Loud Speakers.
    - The keyboard feels great.
    - Great for audio production 105 tracks logic pro, Ableton works great too.
    - Good for Final Cut Pro.
    - temps no problems, TG Pro, Turboboost Switcher Pro used. 20$ investment.
    - Battery life 12 hours with special sudo script.
    - Sold My M1 Macbook Air 1TB SSD for more screen estate, lack of ports, and had money left to buy a Caldigit TS3 Plus and take my girl out for dinner.

If the laptop was a core i9, 16gb ram, 1TB SSD, with AMD Radeon 4GB. Would you have still sold your M1 macbook air and get it? (if the macbook air was a base model M1)

Still a great design this was the last Macbook I had before I upgraded to the 14" Macbook Pro M3 18GB, huge trackpad amazing speakers and dont jump on me but I loved the touch bar haha, it was ahead of its time, if they kept it with the F" keys it would made the current Silicon Macbooks amazing.

So is it worth buying in 2023? I'm actually looking at getting one to replace my 2017 15" MacBook Pro. I'm focusing on the 16" 5500m 8gb model with 32gb ram and a 1tb ssd.

I bought this laptop in 2019 and It's a great machine! However, I purchased the base model (16GB RAM, 500SSD).
    The Pros:
    - The 16 inch screen is great. Perfect for programming and video editing.
    - Loud Speakers.
    - The keyboard feels great.
    - Overall decent laptop
    - Great for programming/ webdev (However, laptop gets hot).
    The Cons:
    - The base model is not good enough for Final Cut Pro. The experience is not great. It feels very laggy and slow. (Loud Fans)
    - If you have multiple chrome tabs open, computer gets really hot.
    - The only issue that I have with this computer is that it gets really hot lol
Should you buy this computer ? Yes and No. It really depends. I recommend you to stay away from the base model. Instead get a M1 Air or M2 air. If you're a Pro user and is thinking of going down the computer science route or is thinking of creating a UA-cam Channel maybe a M1 Pro MBP.

@@so_ma_music I ended up getting the i9/16 gb model and same loud fan noise issue only. i try to run in low power mode and that seems to have helped with fan turning on a bit less.

Fans are spinning up because you are suffocating the machine, by placing it on your bed. The air intake vents, underneath the machine, need space to pull in air… and your comforter is blocking those. Otherwise, a very decent machine, I have it myself as well.

Depending on the specs and what you're doing. If its a i7 model and you need power, then get the M1. i7 model is notorious for being kinda slow. (read some of the other comments). If it's a i9, then it will be semi comparable to a M1 in some tasks. If you are considering the M1 pro/max then its down to how much you want to spend really. M1 pro/max will absolutely tear up a i9 in most tasks, but the price delta is huge.

I purchased mine from a Best Buy reseller (i7, 5300M, 16GB, 1TB SSD) and it was an absolute HORRIBLE choice, the laptop itself is amazing, the screen is nice and spacious, the keyboard and trackpad are awesome, I love the Touch Bar and the speakers are incomparable to any other laptop. Luckily my unit doesn't really get too hot and the fan noise is a treat compared to any other gaming laptop. The thing that pushed me to ask for a refund was the horrible laggy and sluggish animations, everything takes forever to open(compared to my 2020 Alienware laptop with an i5 11th gen) and there are these "skips" every 10 seconds or so that ruin the experience, Mac OS is supposed to be fluid and fast but with this laptop it is absolutely unusable if you have used any modern windows or m1 laptops. I even tried reinstalling the entire OS but the lag is still very persistent as well as the "skips", especially when using the trackpad. If you want a FAST and RELIABLE laptop, DO NOT get this laptop, NO MATTER HOW CHEAP IT IS. Do yourself a favour and get a refurbished m1/m2 air/pro.
It's such a shame that such a nice machine gets killed by Apple just to make the newer laptops seem better, I can't believe that when I installed Bootcamp, Windows 10 feels SMOOTHER than Monterey OS(which is the default OS!!). LET THAT SINK IN!
Scrolling through the comment section on YT, waiting for basic websites to load like FB, Reddit, Twitter, Best Buy AND SWITCHING TABS ON CHROME WITH JUST 3 TABS OPEN takes FOREVER and the fingerprint scanner takes a solid 3-5 seconds to work every time and is NOT immediate
