Prepping John's Progressive Weber For BOOST!!!!

  • So we are modifying the progressive Weber for boost reference. This is the first time we have used this carb for a turbo application and are going to be learning along the way. From what we can see, that others in the past have done is just reference the power valve for boost and jet accordingly. This is the way we are tackling and may not be the best or correct way. This is an experiment so stay tuned to see what happens. Don't forget to like and Subscribe 😉.

    Giday, bit late but, I’m confused, if the vacuum is blocked the valve is open by default, no vacuum to close it?.
    Wouldn’t you need to swap the spring for a pull type to hold the rod up, valve closed until boost pushes it down,
    How much boost can the diaphragm take?
    I’m running 20psi, A14 dato in my 53 Morris minor,

    Decide whether your reviewing music, or teaching people important mechanical stuff. I want to run a boosted 32/36 Weber and am very interested in you knowledge. The music I can get elsewhere. As an ex vocational instructor I assume you its distracting. You have a good voice. Clear with good enunciation and great dialoge. Dont take away from your strengths. A video of you hauling ass across the desert is a different animal than instruction.

    I am planning to use a Weber 3236 downdraft progressive like this on an A14 engine Datsun project we have in a B210. Was just curious how this turned out.
    I have researched using a Weber progressive in draw though setup for months and find little to NO info on the matter other than this video of yours but no follow up videos on this particular project. I just had two quick questions if you'd be so kind as to respond.
    1. Did it ended up working out how you planned?
    And
    2. Why is this necessary to begin with? Could you not simply leave primary side alone and jet the secondary larger to add the fuel once the secondary opens or would that only serve to provide poor street drivability?
    Also would this work better with a non progressive downdraft such as a Weber 38/38 because we have both...
    Haha that was more than two questions I apologise 😅 Love the channel!!!

    • @MattLundquistVW
      @MattLundquistVW  3 роки тому +2

      It worked well, you could watch the AFR get richer as boost increased. The one problem we had was a off idle flat spot, that I believe was because our manifold before the turbo was super short.
      The reason to do the mod is that there are times when the carb is seeing high vacuum signals ( power valve is shut) and the motor is making boost. With the mod the power valve opens when the engine is seeing boost , no matter if the carb is seeing vacuum. Also by doing this you do not have to jet the carb so rich and can have good fuel economy.
      As for a non progressive carb. I think it would be easier to tune and probably make more power( it's larger at 38mm). But both should work.
      Hope this helps

      I have not seen how they are doing it so I can not say for sure. I looked at there website and all it says ( in very small print) "
      New custom boost referenced power valve and carb body machining to suit new operation" . So they are machining the carb body for the reference also. Since there is only one passageway for the signal to the power valve, they are adding something similar to what we did. Hope this helps you with your build. Here is the link to the only part I seen mentioned the power valve mod on their website.

    • @MattLundquistVW
      @MattLundquistVW  5 років тому

      @@spongebobdriftpants The power valve will not work as when you come on to boost as the turbo is putting a bigger draw ( more vacuum) on the carb. The power valve normally only opens when vacuum comes close to zero. By modifying it in this way when the motor builds boost and the turbo is pulling massive air throw the carb, the boost pressure will open the power valve. As for the accelerator discharge nozzle we just drilled the secondary nozzle out ( was not drilled from the factory) so that both barrels would get fuel when you mat the throttle.

  • @TurboWarioTV

      It's going on a draw through setup.

    • @MattLundquistVW
      @MattLundquistVW  5 років тому +1

      The reason for boost referencing the power valve is to keep the jetting on the lean side and only add fuel when needed on boost. Jetting it fat works, just trying to get the best of both worlds ( good mpg and 12.0 afr on boost).

    • @MattLundquistVW
      @MattLundquistVW  5 років тому

      No did it so we don't have to jet the carb super rich. When the engine comes up on boost the power valve will open and add more fuel. But when we are cruising down the road the power valve will be closed and the mixer will be leaner. That is the reason we did it.
