THANK YOU! This was a life saver. I was using windows 10 in bootcamp with no problems for months and then out of the blue I was frozen out at startup. downloaded the trial of Paragon NTFS for Mac, deleted the atikmdag.sys driver and violà I am back up and running.
I've been dealing with this issue for a while now. I haven't tried this without uninstalling the driver. I just considered that might be key. I did it several times *after* uninstalling the display drivers. Perhaps that is key to this fix. In any case, this issue is due to the driver being unable to access the internal display for whatever reason. It does not happen on Nvidia machines. I have 3 iMacs. The only one this issue turned up on has a Radeon mobility HD 4670. I tried using the older version of the driver same issue. I'll let you know if this works when I feel like trying to resolve this issue again. If this doesn't work for you using the windows generic driver in place of the graphics card specific drivers will also allow you to use the normal display outside of safe mode. You'll, of course, be limited in your graphical functionality. Games, etc. To do this go into your device manager update driver select from a list and then select generic windows driver.
@@emilythompson7052 That's really weird. Does it work in safe mode? Safe mode uses the windows generic driver. So it's weird that it didn't work. Maybe something is swapping the driver out when you boot normally? I didn't have this problem. Hmm in what way did it not work?
Well I did this trick without uninstalling the driver first. All it did was cause the ati driver to fail to load. Thus it's technically using the windows generic driver. The good news is I understand why it's a "fix." The system never attempts to swap the driver out. Which brings me to the bext discussion. When I booted up outside safemode it was "fine." At first, but eventually it loaded the ati driver. So that's probably what happened for you Emily. Deleting the file mentioned in this video will lock in the generic driver. Surely there is away to do it without having to delete this file though or uninstalling the ati drivers. A way to lock in the generic driver. I'll continue to work on it and hopefully find a fix that doesn't basically disable your video card. My purpose for doing this was so my nephew could play games. So this doesn't work for me and a virtual machine on a mid 2010 iMac is less than stellar.
@@emilythompson7052 I'm not sure what's going on in your situation then. I assume you did the usual. @@Nathan-cg7dz okay that wont be the file you are looking to delete for the intel base graphics, I recommend you reinstall windows 64 bit, that should solve it, if you have any files that need to be backed up do so then reinstall.
