My Oil Tank Empties out on Every chainsaw I have. I must Empty the Oiler Tank after use.
Amazon boxes cut on and laid flat. Makes a good storage mat and once saturated, good brush pile starter.
I have 3 Stihl saws and an Echo pole saw. They all reside side by side in my shop. I think the Stihl saws just mark their territory to keep the Echo saw in line.
I have 2 Husky's, a Stihl and a Poulan, all live on the same shelf.. Stihl is the only one that leaks, and has since new (as far as I can remember).. Chichanic has a video on why (some) Stihls do this..

Never hurts to crack that cap and release any pressure in the tank. I've had saws that leak for days and weeks, long past the residual oil on the bar and sprocket. Thanks for the video. Cheers!

Hi Steve,I enjoy watching your videos. I own a Husqvarna 550xp and it was leaking bar oil etc when stopped. I fitted a new pump,oil cap,and crankcase seals.All were genuine parts,but the leak was still there. Finally I noticed an oil outlet valve between the two bar mounting bolts were oil was exuding.This valve was missing its push in cover,which was the source of the leak. I have now replaced the small plastic valve and it’s cover,resulting in no leakage of my bar oil. Nobody on UA-cam seems to mention this about the Husqvarna 550 series of saws. I just thought this info may be of use to you and those who follow your channel. Your videos have educated me a lot over the years,,keep the videos coming. Thank you kindly and take care,,John…..No beer today ??? That’s not you,,,lol.

It's called draining down. Simply store it on a piece of cardboard or plywood. My father was a logger for many years when he was in his twenties and thirties back in the late 70's and early 80's. He taught me all the tricks of the trade over the years. Truly valuable, priceless knowledge to be give by anyone. Every saw a person will use will do this to some degree especially if you do any cutting in colder weather than put it away in a warm dry play. It is perfectly normal. What isn't normal is the free flowing mess that you get with a damaged tank or line that can drain out almost as quickly as the tank is being filled. That will be readily noted by the massive spill all around the saw as apposed to the small drip that appears below the sprocket.

Hey Steve.....it's been a while! Mine leaks but I'm sure you once suggested there was another reason which I can't quite remember......because I'm a man and I've slept since then! Needless to say, I just live with it and don't leave it with oil in the tank.

Yup. Every chainsaw that I've ever owned has "leaked" oil. Your #1 reason makes a lot of sense. I think the next time I use my saw I'll strip it down and give it a good cleaning after use. Then I'll watch for a leak... Wish me luck!
That will take care of 99% of the oil oozing out and down 👇 on the ground. Don't forget to clean the bar groove too, lots of saw dust in there that will trap oil as well.

I hang my saws by the handles on the wall. A large puppy pad under them works great. My favorite though, is an old t shirt. When it is saturated, I wrap it around a stick and make a torch for my grandson. Priceless!

Boot trays are often a good size to set a chain saw onto and catch the oil.
Chainsaw case with an old towel or pig mat in the bottom will keep your shop clean.
My MS440 leaks bar and chain oil behind the pump. Always wiped clean. Leaked with the OEM oil pump, then with two aftermarket pump's. Have also replaced the oil pick-up tube several times. Have also loosened the cap to release pressure and it still leaks.

Recent large leak of oil during use, and the chain stopped moving in a very hot bar. The oil line connector had popped apart on the underside. Reckon I overfilled the oil tank and screwing the filler cap tight forced the oil line apart at the small connector. My 2008 Ryobi. Otherwise no leaks of any size, but I do keep it in its original case with a bar cover.
I put an old rag (worn out socks or whatever) under the sprocket area of my chainsaw cases. Once they get a bit saturated with oil, I use them to start my trash burn barrel (probably not EPA recommended). I really like the old style one-piece clam shell like plastic chainsaw cases. I treat my chainsaws like a gun or a bow. I like having them in a case when tossing them in a UTV, ATV, trailer, or whatever. I have 3 chainsaws and 3 cases for them.

Thanks for the video. My MS180 Stihl would empty the tank after use. Come to find, thanks to you, It was the oil line (grommet) that popped out of the tank. Thanks Stihl can you come up with a better design?

My saws live on a bed of oil dry (kitty litter) in the shed. The residual oil drips off the bar line crazy on my Echo CS400.
i was overhaulin an MS170 that my father in law had stopped using as it was leaking fuel and oil and he bought a new one. so I said give me it to have a look see . so when I started taking her apart I noticed the fuel line at the gromett at the tank was not seated properly , same for the oil. someone had been working at it I think and didnt put it back together properly. his brother is a local repair man for saws and mowers and is getting on a bit so i suspect he forgot or its dementia staring... cheap fix in the end and kudos for me.
this series is great covers alot of things I saw my Dad deal with in the years he worked in a small engine shop.
I’d have to agree with Steve on this one with the residual oil leaking after using it. My experience is if you clean the spot up you won’t see it again. Thanks guys love this series.👍
I keep my saw in a case, and it contains the oil. Then I pour it off into an old bar oil jug & re-use it later. Stihl rep says it is just residual from the bar, but I’m having a hard time accepting that - I’m talking about 4-6oz poured off from the case between uses. Keep up the good work Steve & April!

Good point. I always set mine on a cardboard beer box. (No shortage of those around my shop). Then I just toss it in the trash or use it to start a campfire in my outdoor fire pit. 😉
I have 2 Stihl chainsaws that I drain the oil out of the tank once I'm done using them because I thought the tank was leaking. That definitely makes sense now. Thanks for the question and the answer.

If you don't like the oil on your shelf, clean your chainsaw after use and put a rag or some paper underneath.
That's what I always do.
My older Stihl MS261 has those flippy caps of which the oil cap is the culprit. A definite design flaw not keeping with the KISS principle. Otherwise a great saw but those caps are a PIA.
Great question whoever asked it! My saw also was dripping some puddles this summer. I didn't look too closely at it, but now I have some things to check!
This is a common issue with husqvarna, this little metal oil pump cover beneath the chain bar gets bent or damaged easily and starts to leak oil so it needs to be replaced, you can always change oil line aswell while you do it but most of the occasions it is not necessary

I set mine on the side handle so the bar is at an upward angle. I don't have this problem since I started doing this.
Hey April and Steve, a brilliant answer to that question I often wondered it myself years ago but the natural reason the way you described it is spot on.. usually I bring my saw indoors over winter and when I'm not using it, I have an old off cut of carpet I keep to store it on when I'm not using it. I’ve always thought it was the buildup of oil on the bar, chain and behind the cover for the sprocket. Not enough oil leak for me to worry about it. I had used a rubber foam pad, which absorbed the oil. So I would not use that. I did go to a flooring place and got a small (2 feet by 3 feet) vinyl flooring out of their trash. Ask first before you do that, which they were very accommodating since I asked. It works great and easy to clean up.
I agree 100%. Have been running chain saws for 50 years and have noticed this situation. Never bothered me because I always knew what caused it. Just had to be careful where I stored my saws.
Hero's a good one that I can Crack. I have a jonsered 2050. It runs great when worm chain turns when setting cold. I can adjust it to work right when it hot or cold but not both.
Great video Steve and April,good to finally meet your better half, I have a late '70's early 80's 028 av Wood Boss that I got with a case.. My oiler, I always felt over oiled so I line my case with Oil absorbent pads and that helps. The saw is a beast! Thanks for all the help, Cheers!

Husqvarna chain cover studs screw into oil reservoir and can leak. Ryobi leaks all its oil if stored with bar pointing down.
No - I have a leak on two of my three Stihl saws - but I learned turn the saw sideways definitely work on my three saws- lay the saw on the opposite side of the bar-it’s awkward but works!

My first chainsaw was a Poulan Pro and it had the typical "leaking" issue that you described, but then a couple of years in it started actually leaking for some reason. If it sat for a few days it would be sitting in a pool of oil. It worked fine like that, just made a mess.
I have an inexpensive corded electric pole chainsaw, the oil leaks out if it's stored in a particular orientation, like I said, inexpensive. So, I figured out the orientation, problem solved. It does everything well, though with the cordless models available now, I'd not repeat the purchase.

I’ve always kept my Stihl saw in a case and I have to clean the case occasionally, no big deal. I have a roll of Pigmat that works great on absorbing oil so maybe I’ll stick a sheet of that in my saw case to make the cleanup easier. Great stuff Steve i had gotten the same question and i answered it the same way my chainsaws are in a warm room and expansion and contraction does push a small amount of oil through the oil hole on my STIHL ms180 but i see not much more than a couple of drops.
Both my Homelite and Poulan have this “issue or non-issue”…….I always place them on a low profile cardboard box after use and just expect that after splooge..😂😅

My Sthil leaks if stored upright. Turn it on its side, like when you fill the tanks, and it's fine. It stated it's leak problem when I replaced the oil pump with a knock off brand.
I worked on craftsman chain saws and I found the oil leak was from the oil resavior build up pressure and just opening and tighten the cap would take care of the leak.
Exactly right. I tell customers that proper maintenance helps. When done cutting, clean your saw. Wipe the clutch area and side cover. I bet you’ve seen, as I, those areas packed with oil soaked wood chips, dusting dirt. That will allow bar oil to ooze and drip from dirt for days.

My Huski 141, as it got older was leaking badly. I replaced the oiler and noticed they have gone from a two piece seal around the oil pump to a single piece , now much better with no excess oil leaking when stored

Steve all your answers are right, I just want to comment on what I do, when storing I drain the oil and the gas and found a long plastic shoe bin, put a rag at bottom and fits perfect and sometimes find the oily rag useful for wiping on other metal tools like axe, machete, shovel and what ever else, oh miss the sound of open can and cheers
Yeah, i call all the newer Poulan stuff Pooplan because they all poo out oil when stored.
I have 2 Stihl’s. Do not leak. I have an electric saw, leaks. The whole bottom has oil on it. I usually keep my oil topped off. I want to take it apart and see why. Thanks Steve-o.

I bought a brand new Stihl MS200T Top handle chainsaw yesterday...
Filled her with fuel and oil, started her up for the gentle run-in process.... Once i turned it off to let the engine cool down, I placed the saw on top of my garbage bin while i got a drink, Came back to the entire top of the bin lid Dripping of bar oil...
Awesome saw! While you were running the saw without it being in wood the oil has nowhere to go except to accumulate on the backside of the bar cover vs being absorbed into wood/sawdust. Once you set the saw down the residual oil drips down by law lol
I own a ~20 yr old Stihl MS 211 and 1 yr noticed a puddle of oil under it bigger than the saw. Cleaned it up and quite some time later (maybe weeks) noticed the same puddle. Brought it to my dealer & they replaced some small plastic oiler part for ~ $25. At that point I grew concerned that the oiler wasn't working because there was no more oil leak -none. But consumption is normal and it lubricates the bar & chain just fine.
I have two Stihl 017 that are older. The oil tube from the tank to the pump leaked. I was able to replace both, and it solved the problem.
My ol' Echo 351VL "leaked" oil because the sawdust that was built up inside the clutch area of the saw was packed in there and every time I used it it soaked up more oil. I had a puddle on the floor. I cleaned out the packed sawdust and my saw stopped puddling.
I laugh every time I hear this 🤣. Number one fact, thankfully it's oiling your chain. Your logic is on point. I always said it is the nature of the beast to leave oil residue.
My local Stihl dealer told me to always release & reseal the oil cap when I store it - supposing to release the pressure in the tank and make it less likely to leak - sometimes it seems to work - sometimes not so good - any comments on that train of thought ?!?!?
My 2nd hand electric saw leaked ever since I've owned it. Originally found cracked lines and replaced them but still have the issue. The only point is from the tank and tube, which I don't know what to seal the void with. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I like to park mine on a square of plywood. It does a pretty good job of soaking up dripping bar oil.
Ya if you are not careful you get grit on the O-ring. Been there, done that. I try to keep a pice or two of cardborad under mine and change it when it gets olily, and lay it on its side with the fill caps up. James Lacy over and out.

Do like I do, empty out the oil tank if not going to use again for awhile and place it on a grocery paper bags. And the bag gets soaked with the bar oil ,l I use the bag to start my wood stove fire, in the garage,

Commonly done when cutting through lake ice but suspect it wont hold up for wood for extended periods of time.
On Stihl chainsaws, empty your bar oil tank and then get an air hose with LOW PSI and blow through the air vent (silver circle with a hole in it somewhere between the oiler slot for the bar/chain and the bar studs). What happened on one of our saws at work is a tiny piece of sawdust got lodged in the inside of that valve from people not cleaning the caps before refilling the saw. It wouldn't let air in or out, so the result was that there was always pressure in the oil tank, pushing it out the oiler. It would drain a full tank of bar oil in a week of sitting. Now it doesn't leak a drop, except when the temperature changes drastically like any other saw.
I have a Stihl 042AV(it was my grandfather's so there's sentimental value in it) that started leaking oil. Enough to drain half a tank in 12hrs. The aluminum cover that the oiler is mounted in is cracked. When it happened I had to retire the saw because the parts were not available anywhere. I still look for the parts needed or a parts saw from time to time.
I’ve never had a chainsaw of any kind that didn’t have this “issue”. I’ve found that storing them on their side (bar side up) greatly reduced the issue with the electric units, which led me to believe that there was a systemic issue with leakage from the oiler port during storage. With gas powered models you’d have to assure yourself that this wouldn’t affect the fuel system (tank, carb, etc.)
A better grade oil can also stop leaks , as i have experienced

My johnsereds it didn’t leak for 40years the all of a sudden it would leak after I used it, I found out that the gasket for the oiler just wore out after fixing it it stoped leaking 😁😁👍👍

Most times I have witnessed an 'actual' oil leak has been from the oil cap O-ring not sealing properly, due to the customer not cleaning around the cap before removing the cap, and allowing saw dust to get on the O-ring and in around the filler neck O-ring seal surface. A thorough clean of both of these areas normally fixes the issue, or worst case a new O-ring and good clean surfaces is the solution. Once those areas are clean, I've found it's possible to lay the saw on the filler cap side with no leaks, and that also stops oil leaking through the oil pump due to heat expansion as you mentioned.

Good topic, guys! I have a slight variation on that leaking issue - my chainsaw leaks fuel! No matter how tight I make the fuel cap, it still disappears over a period of a week or two. I solved the issue by storing the saw ON ITS SIDE, with the fuel cap facing up. No more stains on the garage floor, and no more lost fuel. Thanks, Steve and April!
I've seen fuel tanks leak from the molding of the tank. Instead of having a tank it is actually a chamber in the frame. It also could be leaking from the port for the fuel lines to and from the carb. Teflon tape solved that problem for me.

I store mine on it's side with the tank caps facing up also. My Stihl leaks like a sieve.

If A Stihl with flip cap, replace that cap. (Noted to leak)......
just assume your chain saw WILL leak oil.
store it on some sort of box or drip tray, with some sort of absorbent thing, like a rag or a piece of MDF.
I can’t quantify it but as somebody with several husqvarnas and stihls my husky’s leak way more oil than the stihls. I’ve never really put too much thought into it until my truck had a warranty issue this year (ford F-150 platinum - anytime it gets below freezing the door latches randomly unlock and unlatch so you’ll be taking an exit and the door will just fling open at 70 mph) and it has been in the shop 2 months so far. I’ve been renting a car for the past 2 months (which ford wouldn’t pay for) and the carpet in the back is basically an oil slick at this point. The next person who gets the car (if my truck ever gets fixed) is going to wonder why their luggage is covered in bar oil and wood chips… but it’s a rental so that sounds like a their problem, not a my problem.

Stihl 462c will leak from the oiler when held upside down (trigger-handle up, bar-tip down), especially with the bar removed.
Seeing this leak is peace of mind that the oiler is working well...

@@donmayberryjrsOPE Oh I don't keep it upside down. Only when cleaning and servicing I notice immediate dripping when nose-down and no bar. Happens just the same when the oiler-adjuster is dialled to minimum.
I put a feminine napkin under the chain saw. Super absorbent. Super effective. Don't laugh until you've tried it. P.S. FN's are also great as a headband to absorb sweat under your bike helmet when cycling on hot and humid days. FN's are one of the 10 greatest inventions of all time.
I use a panty liner under my helmet but be careful that it doesn’t stay stuck to your forehead when you take your helmet off at the convenience store.
