fuel filter restriction; makes the carb bowl run dry.
Similarly, I was working on a 2-cycle (so no float bowl) and it had a small screen inside the carb that was getting clogged. It would run for a bit, but then wouldn't start again unless I waited about 30 mins.
Day 29 and it's been a great series. We need another 30!! 💯👍
I've definitely had this happen when the fuel tank has a clogged vent. It sucks fuel out of the tank for awhile but eventually it can't suck no more. Loosen the gas cap and you can hear it suck in some air because the tank has actually pulled a vacuum. If you leave the gas cap loose it'll run forever. If this matches your symptoms it definitely means you need to fix the vent.
Hey, I've got a Honda powered trash pump that has this problem. The gas cap looks like it wasn't meant to be disassembled, any idea how to clean the vent?
@@mrbill4128 not sure if this is my problem but the husqvarna lt151 i have likes to choke for fuel even though there is still a half tank of fuel in it and then it decides to turn itself off
Steve is a marketing genius. First, he draws us in with small engines which of course everyone loves. Then he keeps you interested with beer. Again, a solid move. Right when you think Ol Steve has ran out of slick moves, he comes through with a pretty girl on set. Pro move Steve. Respect.
This is just the video I needed, I have a 2 stroke Husqvarna 128ld string trimmer and have replaced it with three, "NEW" different carburetors with the same results. On a cold start it starts perfect, but at half choke it idles very, very high which is NOT normal. After I take it off choke it idles normal, it rev's up perfect, the idle mixture screws are set perfect but when the engine worms up and I pull the trigger, then release the trigger it idles between 3700 and 4000 rpm's. The idle speed for this model trimmer is between 2300 and 3200 rpm's, which is to high with the trimmer head NOT spinning. Now, if I let it set and idle at 3700 rpm's for maybe a minute or two the rpm's will start to drop then it will shut off. In other words, I can't get it to idle at the normal idle speed without it keep shutting off.
Parts Replaced:
Fuel lines and fuel filter
New Spark Plug
Three NEW, different carburetors and gasket
Also a new air filter
My question, would a ignition coil cause these symptoms or what would you suggest I try next? Sorry for Writing a Book in your comment section, but I thought this was just the right youtube video to post this problem I'm having with my string trimmer........
What about a plugged fuel filter, a collapsing fuel line (interior wall seperating), or maybe dirt in the fuel tank...etc.
I just hate to see that these 30 days of questions are coming to an end. I've learned so much. I know it' has to be a TON of work to put these together but still hope you'll consider doing something like this again soon. Keep up the great work!
Steve and April, have enjoyed your 30 days of questions and answers
Very informative.
Steve my suggestion is that you keep April on your channel as your
co anchor. She as made your channel more interesting with her great personality. Have a great day. Lawn mower repair season will soon be on us. Look forward to more of your videos.
Back in the 80s when I was working in a hardware store we got a bunch of Sachs brush cutters and chain saws that came with unvented caps. We ended up making our own vents for them by drilling and tapping the cap then installing a set screw with a groove cut in the side with a thin rotary tool blade. Easy to do and it worked.
Hey steve, another reason why an engine dies after a short run time can also be the spark plug breaking down, see this a lot at the small engine shop I work at.
I had a spark plug breakdown on my Honda generator. The generator would start and run for about a minute or so and shut down. I took the oil shutdown device out of the circuit and that didn't help. Changed the plug and that solved the problem.
One more reason. Any carb with a rubber fuel inlet seat, ethanol in fuel causes the seat to swell and restrict the fuel flow to just a trickle, the engine will run fine until the fuel bowl runs dry then cuts out and won't start until you let it stand for a minute and the bowl refills.
I've had this quite a lot here in UK since the introduction of E10. Replace the needle seat.
More good advice!! As always, Steve, you give us good sound advice without all the hype you find on some other channels. Thanks!!!
Thank you, Steve. I have enjoyed this thirty days series. I just wonder why you left April in the house so long. She is a big hit.
I hope you're saving all your outakes. You could do a whole series of em.
One thing you failed to mention is maybe their is something floating in the gas tank that ocassionally gets sucked down against the hole for the fuel line connection. Had a friend that happened to. They could not figure out why their lawn mower engine would run good, then suddenly act like it ran out of fuel. Then they would start it again, and it would run fine for a while then do it again. They found a dead fly in the gas tank, and the problem went away.
Two other issues I have seen- carb vapor lock once hot, and engine case/carb mating surface changes shape and allows an air leask- lean die condition.
I wish my wife was one percent as interested in my mechanical activities as April is with Steve’s! Lucky Guy!
Another thing for run-ability , especially for 2-strokes, is to check the Spark Arrestor Screen in the muffler …I’ve seen it with a lot of different 2-stroke equipment that the screen will get plugged from running too rich or if they get left idling, the screen gets plugged…this will definitely cause them to stall, die or not want to start…good series guys! 😎👍
Steve,
Probably not the case - but if random, a floater in the tank as a possibility (the other side of an air vent question).
How about the engine heating up, with things expanding through normal, operating heat level being achieved - say a loose plug changing grounding due to expansion from changing temperatures?
Joe
Great series, Steve. You deserve two beers on Day 30!
And the other cause, a spark plug goes open when hot, but works when cooled down. Happened to me on an NGK spark plug.
All great tips! Thanks guys!
Usually for me it's a clogged needle valve (the valve that shuts the gas off to the carb when the bowl is full).
I hope you will continue some form of this thirty days of questions. It's fun and very informative. - Had the low oil sensor problem myself on a vibro-compactor. We kept pulling that cord over and over until finally somebody said Hey Check The Oil! Threw a quart in and it fired right back up! Great vids. Thanks. P.S. LUV APRIL!!
More great advice. Keep up the good work.
Hey Steve and April. Thanks so much for the great series of videos. Lots of info and fun. My friend had a problem with his mower running a few minutes and would shut off. Sure enough, he had trash blocking his gas cap vent. Cleared the vent and all is well. Thanks again.
Good day -A- thanks again for the good information again...
OK so I have a fun one and although I think you may have already described this I'll throw it out there...... Husq 128LD "ran last summer" Wouldnt run - found the pickup line missing - replaced and ran "Kindof" cleaned the carb, no change. Replaced the carb and fuel lines and then did the tune (out 1.25 on each and then adjust to get running right) Just as I got it to where it was running like a top, it died (like being turned off) CHecked the fuel cap like you mentioned here - No change, Checked spark arrestor - Clean, Changed plug - No change. The only thing I can figure now is that it is the coil.. Only loss is that it fires right back up every time wich if it was heat-related I would assume that it would take a min to start again..... Seemed strange to me thought you may enjoy and others may benefit.
Thanks for the 30 days of questions.
My Stihl FS76 trimmer would run fine for several minutes but would die and not run until cooled back down. My research led me to believe that it was the coil. I decided to install a new carb before a new coil and it fixed the problem.
Needle valve and float
If it has a fuel pump it may be getting worn out, they don’t always just go out at once. Also check carburetors, fuel filter, vent, air filter, and if these are all ok and it starts and runs and then stops after a few minutes it could be your valves on overhead valves especially need to be adjusted. This is common on certain models especially kohler courage engines.
A friend had this happen repeatedly on his 25hp Yamaha outboard . I went fishing with him one day and it happened again , I looked at the fuel tank and it had a plain cap instead of the usual cap with a screw plug vent . Problem solved . I've enjoyed these 30 days question Steve & April , I hope it will be on again next year 🙂
My new trimmer was stalling and shutting down, played with the choke, managed to finish the project. Found your video on adjusting the carburetor on trimmers, mine was factory set, probably for sea level and had the, now typical, goofy headed adjustment screws to keep us DIY'ers from messing with it. Rigged up a tool that worked, followed your instruction, it runs as it should now. I've since bought cheap set of the screwdrivers for those screws.
Another great explanation SteveO! Going to miss these daily nuggets. Cheers as always 🍻. Steve and April out! 😎
Hi Mr Steve and APRIL..... good on both of you guys to keep giving your 20 + years of experience.
I had that problem with a lawn tractor at work some years ago. It drove me half crazy!!! Finally, I figured out that the cap vent was clogged. It took me almost an hour, but I did manage to figure it out after a lot of frustration.
Thanks Steve and April..i had that happen to me with a riding lawnmower 4 months old after draining fuel, changing spark plug etc it was the vent :(..worked like it should instantly when i loosened the gas cap...Thanks for all your great advice!
Had no idea 4 strokes had an oil float. I had low oil mine kept petering out . Thank steve you were right , i thought my flywheel magneto was too rusty
Great complete answer Steve and April
Great lessons! And it's good to see you're enjoying some barley pops.
My Honda hs1332 snowblower did This because th fuel cap got saturated with fuel and couldn’t breathe. Had to get the cap replaced
SPARE QUESTION FOR DAY 30: Could you do 30 days of questions again some time? I really enjoyed this eh!
I had to weigh in on this one. A long time ago I fixed a two stroke lawn mower engine with the same problem. When I disassembled the carburetor I found a small orifice clogged with lint. Removed the lint and deburred the rough edge around the orifice and it ran happily ever after.
It's been an informative ride, Steve and April , I'll have one more for the road !
It's been Great
pc
Thanks Steve and April.
My dog just noticed you're missing a can between the 2 green beer bottles on the left of the top shelf. Damn he's got an ability that I can't explain! Cheers from the west Kootenays!👍🇨🇦🍺
Good video as usual. But you forgot to mention a plugged fuel filter. I have seen where it would allow the engine to start and run for a little bit then shut down.
or allow the generator to run until you put a big load on it...
@@wim0104 You are correct. I have seen that also but had forgotten it. Dang it sucks getting old.😗
A non venting gas cap on pressure washer drove me crazy for a long time. Took a while to diagnose it as a problem with the cap. Then I blew it out multiple times to no avail. Finally drilled a 1/16" hole in the cap. Voila, problem solved! Thanks for this series. Have enjoyed the very useful information.
This was a great thing to do. I hate to see it come to an end. I am a lady, and I have learned very much. You need to do it again periodically thank you appreciate it very much.
Sometimes it can be a thermal problem, but most it is a faulty fuel vent/cap problem or a clogged fuel Filter inside
I've also seen or rare occasions a spark plug that is faulty or improper will change as it gets hot and suddenly shut the engine down. Usually after 1-3 minutes from cold.
funny this should come up - I did have to add oil to my generator night before last. other than that, it's been running continuously for 40 hours, now.
and for a while, I had water in the tank, and that caused issues.
another problem I've seen is we had an old tow-behind mower that hadn't run in years, and when we put it back in service, the fuel line was clogged to the point, the fuel flow couldn't keep up. so it would run the carb dry and die, and once the carb refilled, it would run again.
Hey! I stop running after a few minutes! You covered about all the causes.
If it is a 2 stroke and it is too rich it will flood out when idling. This "30 days of questions" was a pretty beat idea!
I love the 30 day questions!
I had a weed wacker that you had to have the tank completely full for it to run this video help me figure out why it doing that.
Great stuff!!!
As it is 2023, I would say at least 60% of trouble with small 4strokes is caused by ethanol-water caused sludge building at the bottom of fuel tank where mesh covered fuel intake is located. To solve many problems we are facing with climate, economy etc., we need US, Europe and Japan built engines, make them well and make them last! Many thanks for what you do!
I got a deal on a couple year old 2 cyl 24HP Craftsman rider with 40 hours on it. Guy sold it dirt cheap, kept having to change the air filter to keep going. I Found out the large gasket in the gas cap lid had been miss molded. The small vent pin hole was not open. I punched a hole and the problem went away. When he changed the air filter it had time to vent and he probably checked the gas and it would run a while. Runs fine now and for hours.
Hope you and April are keeping well keep up the amazing work sir thanks for all the videos and keep them coming
I've had a weedeater die slowly like this, and it was the choke not fully opening after starting it, like it was set wrong. I had to fiddle with the choke every time until I found the sweet spot. My current weedeater runs great, but came from the factory with the choke switch set backwards! I 'open' the choke to start it, and 'close' it while running. It took me a while to figure that out in the beginning. I thought I was going crazy. Had to go show it to my neighbour!
I've had a similar problem but it was due to the in-tank fuel filter. The thing was clogged and on accelerating the motor it would starve the carb of fuel and shut down.
Awesome video once again guys. Great advice, I hope April is going to stay on the channel the two of you work really well together. 👍🏻 oh look what I found!! Haha 😄
I have Husqvarna riding mower and it had same problem. Issue was about fuel tank ventilation. Ventilation was inside gas cap but there is nothing wrong with it. Ventilation was just a little trench inside sealing so if i screwed it to hard it got blocked. Great video!
I had this happened to me with my log splitter - it would start then stop and eventually, it just would not start. I replaced the fuel, a new plug, ripped the carby apart and cleaned all the little jets and fuel lines, etc, - I was stumped. Asked someone for advice and they queried me about the oil level. 'Low oil' - so I topped it up and presto, away it went. I'd never heard of the 'Low Oil Sensor' and now I know - I felt like a real goose, such a simple thing, but the sensor was doing its job. At the time I thought, what a great bit of technology to be put into the engine. Even now, a few yrs later, I still think about it and think to myself 'how naive I was' - Live and Learn.
My Honda generator 4 stroke would shut off after one minute and 6 seconds after starting. Dead off, no surging. Checked the obvious, vent, gas, plug and oil. I would have to wait a few minutes before it would start again only to run for one minute and 6 seconds; every time. I pulled the carburetor and it was clean. Then I ordered a completely new ignition system and installed it. The problem stayed the same. Since the new ignition kit included a new spark plug which I did not use because my old one looked and tested fine, I figured what the hell and put it in. It started up on the first pull as always as I also hit my timer and it ran one minute and six seconds and kept going and going. What the HELL!!! I have never heard of a plug doing that. Lesson learned, always do the easy parts first no matter if you think it could be the cause or not.
My John Deere Ryder started having a similar problem sometimes would run for several minutes other times only a few seconds. Turned out that the crank pressure tube to the fuel pump was leaking; put a new one on and it worked great.
Thanks for the 30 days of questions- maybe bump it up to 90?? 🤞
The first thing I thought of was that it’s either the fuel tank vent or the fuel filter is clogged up just enough to restrict the flow of fuel, but not eliminate it totally. Either way it sounds like it’s starved for fuel.
I suspect day 30 will not discuss the shape of trimmer line. Is round better?
Thanks Steve weed did same thank vent hose sealed off ❤
Thanks for these ideas. I have a older log splitter with an B&S IC 8 HP engine. It just randomly shuts off. Could be the vacuum operated fuel pump, on/off switch, carb float, etc. I have the parts. Just need the time and motivation to mess with it.
Sorry Stevie, after yesterday you are waaaay back in 2nd place.
April rocks!
I also had this problem on my Kubota 3 cylinder diesel tractor . It would work under load slashing ( Brush hog ) for an hour or so then lose power and revs . I put a siphon hose in the fuel tank and a load of slime and some rust came out , so I'd siphon , refill with clear fuel , over and over until it was as clean as I could get , new fuel filter , add biocide shock treatment and it's been good ever since .
Thank you for the video can't wait for the next one
Steve, good explanation on the ignition module, but you forgot to to mention that after the saw cools down it will work perfectly again until it warms up, then it'll shut down again.
I had a 1073 pioneer and before I realized what the problem was I thought it had gotten lazy and didn't want to work outside the shed
Steve I had the run and stop problem with my push mower and it turned out to be a fouled spark plug. Cleaned it with gas and fixed the problem. It was soaked with oil so I guess the cylinder wall is getting thin. Agreed?
Briggs used a needle seat that was red/ maroon in color and there are plenty of still out there. It would swell to the point of closing off the incoming fuel to the carb. A variation of your running out of fuel scenario.😊
I think the engine is just tired....when I'm tired, I stop running too!
These daily questions are a neat idea. Glad you two are making the videos...keep up the good work.😊
I have found the spark arrestor to be filled with carbon which cuts down the amount of air getting through the carburetor which could cause it to stop.
I had a B&S 28 horse shut off when it got hot, it started and run like new after it cooled off, it was a very hot day. That mower has not given me any problems in 5 years.
That is a great question for Steve to be answering
Hey Steve ive had a four stroke stop running and it was the spark plug . Ever hear of that happening? And the plug was clean only a year old.
Same. Symptoms were instant off, like oil or ignition, and would then start right back up... and then die again, rinse and repeat. Turned out to be the spark plug.
😥 I have been enjoying your little tidbit every day. Will be anxiously awaiting tomorrow. BTW drinking Shiner Bock.
My cub cadet lawn tractor did this, fuel tank spout was plugged
Thank you both for an engaging month of videos.
_Especially_ thank you for not going down into the cesspool that is "shorts" to satisfy the algorithm.
_SERIOUSLY_ there's two things that will make me unsub a channel and set to "do not recommend" without ever looking back.
Shorts and abusing the Premiere 'feature'. If you're doing a Livestream or AMA of course let me know about it.
Thanks again for all the explaining you've done about small engines and yard equipment. Even this crusty codger has learned something! 😉
Had this problem on a four stroke Honda water pump: it was the vent on the gas cap that was clogged
I had that happen to the gas cap on my 041 Farm Boss, and a Briggs & Stratton on a 3" waterpump at work. First time took a bit to find it, second time not so much. I can learn a little.😁 James Out'
One more thing. Many 2-stroke have a fuel filter on the end of a fuel line in the tank. You can blow air back through it, dump the fuel and try fresh fuel. I had that once.
It also could be a stuck float on your carburetor what do you think about that Steve
Great ideas but you forgot a big one....... many four stroke lawnmowers have an automatic choke. When the choke begins to open up the engine can surge or even die because the carb is dirty.
Nice video.
keep it up, almost there.
Fuel filter screen at the tank.
chainsaw mechanic here, most common reason is carburetor adjustment's too lean.
I rebuilt/cleaned my ryobi with 25cc carb, ign module and started up. Now runs then quits or won't restart unless I let it cool down or wait till the next day😬. Did notice the top gas cap might have a breather? I dug some junk out till some clean material showed. Humm give it another try tomorrow ..
Thanks for the reply. Went to try it today. Fired up ran for 15min and quite. Think there's something with ring, piston and cylinder?? Guess it's time for the grave yard of parts.
I addressed all three of them last summer and that did not solve it.
I thought possibly I bought a bad ignition coil and discover there was a mouse nest that was causing the engine to overheat and shut down.
About three years ago had a plugged muffler and caused the engine to shut down also all of them acted the same way like I was running out of gasoline even though I had a full tank.
I had this problem with a stihl 029. It ended up being a bad spark plug. The plug would gather up resistance after a few minutes and stop producing spark. A new spark plug fixed it.
I know the questions are over but I've got a big one. So many hydraulic units in my area run on a B&S engines. I have a 208cc. I think these engines are solid but the carbs absolutely SUCK!! I can never get it right, it's brand new and often won't start, won't stay running, etc. Sometimes it will run for hours, others, nothing. What can I do? Replace the carb? With what?
Had an oil alert on a Honda engine cut the engine out every time the mower turned right on a big "reel" mower. customer couldn't believe it when I diagnosed low oil level over the phone .
