Pardon the delay my dear students, here's the promised coloring class, check it 🔪 Had a lot of fun with this one, hope it helps! Also have a good Sunday. It's mandatory.
Hi Marc, the gradient map trick at around 5:42 don't work for me. When making gradient maps go from for example: Deep, midtones, highlights... And i pick for these black, blue and orange respectively, it just turns the image a perfect blend between them.
1:43 to 3:19 is just magic. I don’t understand how it happens. I watch it happen but definitely magic. It just goes from 2D to 3D. I can never get to that painting stage. My art needs the lineart to keep the form but shading like this is the goal!! Gotta find your class on it and keep practicing
He has a mastery of 3D anatomy and design from his background working at a gaming studio as well as 3D modelling. His tips about using MagicPoser and 3D references is really gold and anyone "can" do it but Marc just has put in a cosmic amount of work
My two tips are 1) learn basic human anatomy so you know where most prominent muscles are and where they go. 2) Try using half brush(idk what's better name for it but notice the shape of brush he's using from 1:39 onnward). You can create your own brush like this from just creating a dot with soft brush and cut it in half. Trust me, this shape of brush helps IMMENSELY in shading
Bruh............I never tried using Gradient Maps until I saw this video. THIS IS A GAME CHANGER!!!!! The level of robustness on color is off the charts doing this. I can finally get the tones that I want. Particularly skin tones. You are THE man!
Thank you so much for this; I've been struggling to color my drawings for a bit (digitally). I've also been following your yearly Art Schedule and practicing some of the tasks for each month. Will definitely try the strategy out in Krita. Thank you again. Keep up the FIRE
I have color blindness. I've always struggled with colors and understanding how to color my paintings. This method will allow me to stay in my comfort zone (black and white drawings) while FINALLY being able to add colors to them. Thank you so much!!!
Your previous videos about grayscale to color helped so much that I stick to that method until today. It made my process super easy. Without having to focus too much on color and values at the same time, instead I start with values and followed the other steps along the way. Always so helpful, sir Marc!!
To all new artist that are starting, you actually need a good knowledge of light and value to do step 2, i've been drawing for almost 5 years now and value is a hard one so don't be too hard on yourself, is the tallest difficulty curve. This is the best greyscale to color video out there that actually shows you how to go step by step kudos.
When I discovered Gradient maps last year, it blew me away, I was able to make artworks waaaay faster, like stuff I do for 3 days, I can now paint in just a day!
Dang, why when I'm struggling with what type of painting I should do for some character sheets, you appear and upload this. You made my day, as usual. Much love from Spain, Marc-sensei 😁
I've been digitally painting for a few years and had heard of gradient maps but never knew what they were. Thank you so much for this video oh my god this changes everything 🤩
Thank you so much for this detailed tutorial. I am just a self-thought amateur who likes to draw since early age. These type of videos help me improve much faster.
I've also watched other videos of you, but I think this one is the one I understand the most. Thank you, you really are the best digital teacher on the internet! ❤
Ooh never thought about doing the shading / lighting in one step and deleting the line art, this be looks amazing! Will definitely try this in the next character I do
interesting. i used your old method for a long time now, but maybe its time to finally use gradient maps! got some lineart finished so i can test it out by tonight😊
I am currently finishing up an illustration but I am still brand new to digital art, and the gradient maps addition was a GAME CHANGER, so thanks so much for that tidbit!
Super cool to see an update on this. I had used an older video of yours that utilized gradient maps, and while they're finicky to work with when you're not great with color or not used to using them, once you do they're so handy for fixing colors and trying out different colors. As someone that is better at grayscale than colors, it's an indispensable tool for messing with and learning to work with colors. So yeah, thanks for the update on this method.
I just started 3D animation and I have watched your tutorial for years so I'm definitely going to utilize your lessons for my rendering as I intend to mix 2D painting textures on my models.
Your previous color guide changed the way i paint digitally and sped up my workflow Significantly. Now with this video its all that x100. Amazing tutorial
This is so cool, its almost similar to my process the only difference is instead of gradient maps, I use the curves graph, but yes I'll probably start using gradient maps as it looks easier and faster. This is an amazing video!
Always had trouble with greyscale. It's pretty hard for my mind to grasp so lately I've been trying to playing around with some paint brush and I found a way to make nice looking shade and color especially for the skin. I just have to work on making it even better
Thanks this helped a lot! I immediately followed the tutorial and the coloring just really *popped*. As a comic artist, this method was pretty new to me, but I certainly learned a lot! Some parts of this process I'll apply to future Illustrations, that's for sure. It'd be difficult for my comic, though. What I found out about gradient maps through this tutorial is that they almost instantly add a customizable primary light and secondary light- which will cut a good bit of time out of the rendering process for me. I'll have to experiment with this method a bit more because some parts of the process felt awkward for my workflow, but yeah other than that, thanks again! your 1st coloring tutorial helped immensely, and this one helped all the same!
I love this process. I actually learned it during the full course in cubebrush from Marc, this video simply streamlines and simplifies the explanation of the whole process really well. If there is anything to add, is that personally I do the basic tones BEFORE adding the grayscales shadows. Quite simply because it allows me to "select areas" by selecting the gamut color, allowing me to "switch" between character areas and shade them more easily. That's using CSP though, and i've yet to master saving and locking mask selections, which would probably help me further. Either way the process is kind of the same, and very effective!
This is soo helpful, i been struggling with coloring techniques for a while, never seen the blend together very well, but this is going to help a lot. It makes so much sense.
Thank you, Marc! 🥰 I was fascinated how you shaded your giants in your art class. (Psst! You've been my art sensei for a while now)😂. It's always nice to see a new coloring process to refresh our noggins.
Thanks for another great tutorial marc, I’ll be practicing this method to see if it sticks with me. And beautifully rendered piece as always. If I didn’t know any better, I could’ve mistaken it as a real 3d render with how well it’s shaded
I think Marc has mind-reading powers,,,,,im literally struggling with colors right now AND suddenly this shows up! Thank yooouuuu so much Professor Marc 🙇🏻♀️💚
Goldmine tutorial! Also I just purchased the full ART School program and I was surprised to find how much core content Marc has already released on his YT completely free. I say this not to deter others from purchasing, but to point out how extremely generous this man is with sharing his knowledge and making digital art accessible! The program is great for beginners to develop fundamentals. I probably didn't need to buy the whole package, as I jumped straight into Term 8. But I don't mind considering my purchase as a tip to thank Marc for helping me (and so many others) over the years. TY sensei ^0^
I'm a masochist, I give every single region its own gradient map, however I do separate color adjustments when I want to match the character's color to the background and the external light source. Even so great video, man. You rock.
A couple of weeks a go I was trying you coloring method with gradient maps but I still had some doubts and questions about layers and other stuff. This video cleared every doubt. You are awesome and thank you so much also for all the resources you give us. Of course, I have paid my fee 🙌
That was really great! I've used a similar technique when painting with acrylic to make it look like oils. I'll have to break out my GIMP and give this a try! I love how you give back to the art community at large!
I switched to this coloring method and I think its the most professional and speedy approach!! With that being said, its not a method amateurs should use imho!
Mark your videos always give me so much joy, even when I don’t get to watch them for a long time, when I go back to them they always end up teaching something new or inspire me ♥️
This method looks like it would be a HUGE time saver, especially if you're working on a commission. I'll have to try this out, and I think it should be possible in CSP
I'd love to see a video on you explaining the uses for the different blend modes for the layers. Often times when im following these tutorials, I wish I had a better understanding for the layers themselves and when would be best to use them in my art. Great video thought and thanks for the help! :)
This is the best colouring method up until now. I was usually stuck at that muddy gradient map step, didn't know how to solve that so I didn't follow this step but this one was a solution to that so thanks ❤ I mean it and I'm gonna use this process.
But what if I can't use the gradient map in my drawing program? :( I draw on my phone, And the result using the gradient map is a thousand times prettier than the simple method with only the gray values. It just feels so profesional
Hello ! How do you make sure you don't go over the line when selecting? How do you avoid having a piece of her clothes when selecting her skin? I also run into the issue of my selection making tiny loops sometimes... Also, would you happen to have a video on the different blend modes ? This is one of the most confusing things for me
Thank you for this very much,Mark! I can't afford any colouring/painting courses or something like this now,so,your videos it's a salvation for me and other young artists 🤝🏻
So cool! I'm gonna try it out. I never thought about making my own gradient maps. I often just randomly add a gradient filter near the end to make the colors fits better together but that's it. That's smart!
In a way i was doing this prior to watching this video. I dont gray scale I used a purple base and would color manipulate ^^ honestly its cool to see how you did it especially with the gradient maps. Its not my style but its cool to learn about a different rendition that is close to it in a way with somewhat similar results ^^.
excellent tutorial. as usual. you are a blessing to the community, im so greatful to your guidance. following your tutorials have literally transformed my artto whole new levels....thank you again
Dang I am lateeeee sorry teach, I've struggling to keep myself motivated to draw, might be going through art block so I'd really appreciate it if you ever made a video on how to be a regular artist and how to make a schedule or how to be a responsible full time artist if that makes sense, either way thanks and I hope you had a great sunday!!

Missed the shine**
@nick261True that happens to me too but now gradient map helps a lot

0:30 It'd be cool if we started getting like recurring characters in the classroom.
i had a rough sunday marc can i make it up next week? ;-;
Wake up , mark just uploaded
Im alrdy awake
I'm up, I'm up
I am awake!
I'm uuup 😴😴🙃
😢 I'm up I'm up. And I'm late sshhhhh! I don't think he realised

Steven Zapata has the most complete videos on shading in my opinion, I learnt a lot *just* with his 40mins free preview of his shading course.
sorcery
He has a mastery of 3D anatomy and design from his background working at a gaming studio as well as 3D modelling.

Thank you for saying the artschool doesnt actually have AI. My heart dropped for a sec like " NO PLEASE MARC, DONT TELL ME YOU WENT TO THE DARK SIDE"
Thank you so much for this; I've been struggling to color my drawings for a bit (digitally). I've also been following your yearly Art Schedule and practicing some of the tasks for each month. Will definitely try the strategy out in Krita.

Can you give the name of the videos?
4:36 Something great people can do is fill the color with ambient light (aka environment light)
setting the shading layer to multiply and painting under is such a big brained move, It never occured to me... absolutely brilliant.

the way i literally was going to come to your channel and rewatch the video on how to color and then you post this!! mind reader you!!!!
I've been digitally painting for a few years and had heard of gradient maps but never knew what they were. Thank you so much for this video oh my god this changes everything 🤩
The point where you deleted the line art and it still stood strong 😮
Thank you so much for this detailed tutorial. I am just a self-thought amateur who likes to draw since early age. These type of videos help me improve much faster.
Thank you teacher, I'm legitimately starting a color study journey.
Also are you professor Xavier? You always post what we need, when we need it. 😂
This video is a gem👌.
I think I just levelled up.
I really don't like those methods but I think I changed my mind when you chose and changed the colors. so cool! thanks for helpful video
Those gradient maps make such an astounding difference
WOOOAA I LOVE THIS NEW METHOD give a sick result amazing
I've also watched other videos of you, but I think this one is the one I understand the most. Thank you, you really are the best digital teacher on the internet! ❤

Hey! Do you accidentally know how to merge the gradient map mask layers properly? When I merge them - they're losing their colour effect!😢
@@redrum2340Don't know much about Photoshop, but you may try to add all the layer you want to merge into a group and then merge the entire group.
Ur shading is so good it looks like a 3d sculpture😭
After who knows how many years, dude finally made a video on a deep dive tutorial, thanks man
thank you marc!
I love using gradient map after your short video it is a great option
And thanks for explaining your new colouring process really loved it fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Using gradient maps is a bit hard to get right but maybe I'll learn someday. Very helpful and comprehensive video!
Sometimes I can't believe the amount information you give to us for free, from the bottom of my heart thank you for this gift youve given us🙏❤️
This is so cool, its almost similar to my process the only difference is instead of gradient maps, I use the curves graph, but yes I'll probably start using gradient maps as it looks easier and faster.

This is soo helpful, i been struggling with coloring techniques for a while, never seen the blend together very well, but this is going to help a lot. It makes so much sense.
I wish this video was longer. This is so beautiful to watch.
Thank you, Marc! 🥰
I was fascinated how you shaded your giants in your art class. (Psst! You've been my art sensei for a while now)😂.
It's always nice to see a new coloring process to refresh our noggins.
This, if mastered, is insane. Thanks for the tutorial!
you just gained 1 sub from me. im a traditional artist and currently practicing how to colors and im goin to use this method. thank you so much man!
Marc went OD with this coloring method, love it!
Thanks for another great tutorial marc, I’ll be practicing this method to see if it sticks with me.
And beautifully rendered piece as always. If I didn’t know any better, I could’ve mistaken it as a real 3d render with how well it’s shaded
Hey Marc can you make a video on practising/improving your painting and colouring skills other than just doing finished pieces?
color is always the biggest thing I struggle with, I appreciate your constant help in art!!!!!!
That shading brush at the beginning is fantastic I must know how it works!!!
I think Marc has mind-reading powers,,,,,im literally struggling with colors right now AND suddenly this shows up! Thank yooouuuu so much Professor Marc 🙇🏻♀️💚

This method looks like it would be a HUGE time saver, especially if you're working on a commission. I'll have to try this out, and I think it should be possible in CSP
Jesús you just keep getting better and better, i need to be more consistent
I'm going to try this method with an art piece that I'm currently working on.
I got lost. You are applying the gradient maps to the greyscale, right? I´ve been using colorize but this looks so much better :D
MY COLORING TEACHER !!!!! GREATINGS COLOR TEACHER I LOVE YOU ❤❤❤❤
Once more, your video comes just in time. I'm currently looking for new techniques for coloring, I think I'm going to give this a shot.
Perfect timing, needed to color a new piece
Man the shading is next level!
Watching Mr Burnet work is like seeing a shooting star - impressive and satisfying. Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor.
Watching your videos is a great part of my weekends
Duuuuude, this answers many questions I've had for so long. Poggers.
wake up baby, new coloring method just dropped!!
I'd love to see a video on you explaining the uses for the different blend modes for the layers.

Great video thought and thanks for the help! :)
the result is incredible! i can't wait to try it out, thank you!
dudeeeee that art is actually soooo fire
I found this video to be even more digestible than usual, and I've enjoyed all of them. Thanks for doing this, the format fits well with my busy day.
You’re the best. I would’ve never gotten into drawing had it not been for your videos
Everytime I need a tutorial for something I don't even bother searching for one, I just go to your channel fr
This is the best colouring method up until now. I was usually stuck at that muddy gradient map step, didn't know how to solve that so I didn't follow this step but this one was a solution to that so thanks ❤

Looks amazing, and I like that even in wip already looks good.
But what if I can't use the gradient map in my drawing program? :( I draw on my phone, And the result using the gradient map is a thousand times prettier than the simple method with only the gray values. It just feels so profesional
Impresive dude! You make it look simple but this are serious skills
This is one of your best crayscsle to color yet! Thank you! 😊
It's like drawing up characters, but imagine they are white cray. Thank u!! 🙏🙏
Hello ! How do you make sure you don't go over the line when selecting? How do you avoid having a piece of her clothes when selecting her skin? I also run into the issue of my selection making tiny loops sometimes...

I don’t think I’ve seen you render like this before. It’s nothing short of incredible.
I need to level up my shading work. I wish I could shade this way. Just need to keep practicing.
excellent tutorial. as usual. you are a blessing to the community, im so greatful to your guidance. following your tutorials have literally transformed my artto whole new levels....thank you again
