'Challenge accepted, Elon': Mehdi lays out the hate on Musk’s Twitter in gory detail

- Опубліковано 22 тра 2024
- Elon Musk has claimed that hate speech isn’t a problem on X, formerly known as Twitter, because no one can provide him with a single example of it on his platform. Mehdi Hasan accepts that challenge, outlining how hateful content has increased since Musk took over and detailing countless examples of hate speech that remain on the site today.

He’s getting sued for misinformation. He HATES free speech. The whole Conservative Party HATES free speech
@@Upsideround
Free speech doesn't mean you can say anything, anyplace, anywhere. There are limits such as incitement to violence, saying "bomb" in an airport, etc. Finally, freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences of said speech.
In the 1920s, a large KKK rally was held outside Aitken, Minnesota - a small town where my mom lived as a child. The Irish American mayor of Aitken, had refused to allow the KKK to hold their rally within the town's limits. So, at night, the clansmen marched through Aitken - in a show of angry defiance - and burned crosses in front of my grandparents' home. My grandfather wasn't black. He was white, Irish American and Catholic, and he was also the town's doctor. There weren't any people of African descent living nearby, so the clan's rabid, racial hatred was turned loose on whatever other despised group was at hand. This was just one long, hellish weekend in an otherwise idyllic summer, but it wounded my mom's family deeply. They never forgot the nights my grandfather stood bravely in the front yard, holding his WWI service pistol down by his side and calling out many of the hooded clansmen who he recognized by the one pair of shoes they owned. White nationalists who long for a lily-white country don't seem to realize that kind of hatred has no bounds. And one day it could just as easily be turned on them, because of their religion, or country of origin, or economic status, or.. you name it.
Amen!
Absolutely. Fascism is never satisfied.
Bigots have a hole in their hearts that will never be happy.
Even if they managed to erase all "races", they'd come up with new rules and reasons to put people in boxes or hate them, at some point they'd be so starved and desperate for needing more hateful motivation they'd make wars over how you butter your slice of bread like in that Dr. Seuss story.
Never had twitter nor will I. Disgusting.
Me either. So no reason to.
Likewise. 🤝
it was valuable and good, if you knew how to use it
I tweeted once, about 10 years ago. I was at the airport waiting in a car rental line that took HOURS, and was hoping to get their customer service team's attention. That was my first and last tweet.😂😂😂
It's social media for idiots.

I'm sure people have. The question is whether Elol listens.
lol! It's like Fox News always going on about "the media" as if they weren't it. It's such a lazy term.
It also cost him $billion$ as soon as he bought Twitter since he overpaid by 10's of $billion$! He's being sued for his rent by King Charles, who owns the building! It’s now the all the rage for the GOP call for imprisonment for having ideas and opinions. That’s only because they can’t say what they actually want. So stocastic terrorists have to put things “right.”
It was so absurd when old Twitter allowed worse, the examples were ACTUAL hate speech. Most of the examples this doofus presented were not hateful and the few blatant examples were almost certainly leftists pretending- to frame MAGA people with their false narrative.
It happens all the time.
There was also a disturbing amount of kiddie p on old Twitter that they were EXTREMELY slow on removing- if ever.
Musk cracked down on that almost immediately 😎
Now that Twitter isn't an insane leftist echo-chamber and is instead a pretty open and fair marketplace of speech and ideas... can your wacky ideas hold up under scrutiny and against better options?!?!

I have never used twitter and stopped using Facebook couple years ago. Social media is like cancer to society.
You are on social media now. 😂
Yesn't.
It depends what you use it for and how strong your willpower is.
If you just use it to share and look at family pics or leave a laugh emoji on a random joke post the chances are you are fine.
The problem is that social media connected all the worst elements of society to the more sensible ones so that we can see and hear what they are thinking 24/7.
You do realize you are on a form of social media right now. People who post the kind of nonsense you just did, that social media is a cancer, while posting on social media, are just plain stupid, paid Russian trolls, or some cut and paste of the two.
The moment I HEARD that Musk was buying Twitter, I left right then and there. Never regretted it!

Musk doesn't see an increase in hate speech because that's the corner of Twitter he already spent much of his time in to start with.
It’s the same reason the same people are ignorant to the chaos and hate going on around them. They are part of it.
Same goes for being in a cult. You don’t know you’re in a cult until you wake up from someone pulling you out of it from the outside.

It's tough - debunking lies takes 20 times as long as spouting them, but he definitely should've been better prepared for the apologetics.
You are right, the journalist shouldn't make a claim like that to Elon Musk, who obviously wouldn't like to hear that. He should have really prepared to give some evidence.
But maybe Musk decided to go on his show because he thought he wouldn't be challenged. If so, he chose well.

And yet now financially it is Russia that is Twitter's biggest financial contributer and benefactor
I don't think it's that, exactly. There are two reasons: first, the economic. He wants Twitter to declare bankruptcy so that he gets tax credit for it. Second, he wants it to become a voice for the right because he wants to pretend he bought it for that, as if he was going to do the "right" thing, whatever the cost, even though, while he did want to make Twitter a right-wing channel, he never intended to lose so much money this way (and he did go to court to cancel the contract). Thank you Mehdi for your important exposè. Hate is just like cancer. It metastaizes and makes the world sick.
What do you call the replies on this clip? Peace and love or hatred towards an individual. Don't pretend your post isn't hate filled, hypocrite.
Oh I do hate - though NEVER an entire race/ethnicity/colour . . . I do hate individuals and governments that do.
I see the disingenuous troll has surfaced under his latest pseudonym. Seriously, hating hate speech or being disgusted by an immature bigot isn't the same thing as calling for whole groups of people to be "gone" or inciting violence against individuals or members.
Hating the one individual making the biggest difference in the fight against climate change shows your individual level of hate. @@sharonwong8280
@@ajnz2420look how angry you are. No one else is. Get therapy and get off the internet . Always those “got ya!” People who don’t know what they’re talking about , such a fragile ego. I feel bad for people like you.

I've been threatened, called all kinds of horrible names on Twitter for years but yes, it got a lot worse after Elon and his billions.
so I quit
and will never go back
I love it when you accept challenges! Honestly, I could watch you do that every night. You are our fresh breath of truth in this media maelstrom.
MSNBC needs to give name billing, so we can find you easier. Better yet, just give you more primetime spots! 💜✊😎🍀
Since Twitter changed its name to ask we should no longer call them tweets we should call them excrements
A racist wouldn't necessarily recognize themselves as a racist.
So he won’t restrict unfounded hate speech on his platform, but if you expose the data-backed truth outside his platform he’ll try to restrict your speech by suing you for defamation. Such innovation!
those were not data backed !! for example_ if I call you a "fat pig" ! they would consider this hate speech !!
getting offended is subjective
By definition it would not be defamation if the allegations against him are proved to be correct.
Surely, you want the truth to come out, do you not?

@@Ghannon-zk6or It doesn't change hearts and minds of those who continue to hate, but it slows down their ability to recruit and promote the harassment of others. You defenders of hate somehow think that hate is different from stealing. You know that no law against stealing stops someone from thinking about stealing, but it does allow punishment and discouragement. But with hate, you seem to want to stop the feelings, instead of stopping the actions and slander. Since you know that feelings can't be stopped, you set that as the standard, instead of the stopping the actions. When people support hate, I figure they agree with it.
@@Ghannon-zk6or You live in quite a fantasy world, in which hatefulness spread around doesn't harm others. Maybe this is a seance, and you are responding from the Elysian Fields where all is sweet and lovely.
History shows that hatefulness spread around has real consequences for people's lives. Hatefulness kept silent has less chance of spreading like the disease that it is, and results in fewer lynchings and other acts of bigotry. Most people on the other end of bigotry know that they can't stop a bigot from feeling such stupid things, but it is really nice when they are not allowed to publish them, and cause even more trouble.
So whatever it seems to you, it is based on your own bigotry and narrow views, and some sort of adolescent concern about not being able to say mean things to nerdy kids in class without getting sent to the principal's office.
Wow Mehdi that was something else...thank you for this segment.
He condensed the weeks of hate I experienced into 10 minutes. Made me sick all over again. I wish i could delete my account a hundred thousand times. Felt so good to let that crap go.
When they renamed Twitter.. shoulda just called it

Musk is an average twonk with a lot of money held up by literally teams of helpers preventing him from destroying his own companies from the inside out on a regular basis.
He doesn't have this yet with Twitter which is why he is publicly making a fool of himself so often with it.
This is stellar work, thanks Mehdi and team.
For good or for bad, hate speech is an instance of free speech
"Don't air our dirty laundry or we'll sue you" seems to be the greatest tool of modern times. Oh, capitalism... Also, it is tradition now for a billionaire to buy a News/Media outlet (or already owned) and twist it into their mouthpiece and beliefs.
The thing is, Elon would agree with all of those disgusting tweets imo and that is why they are still up.

Musk was absolutely correct that the BBC reporter was ill-prepared. It can be anticipated that raising an issue of hate-speech with the person ostensibly responsible for its proliferation on his platform will elicit demands for examples. I too get tongue-tied when asked to list examples of something that is ubiquitous, simply because such a demand is disingenuous, but that is why an interviewer has the responsibility of better preparation than one engaged in an impromptu conversation.
Sadly that interviewer wasn't there to interview. He was there for that "gotcha" moment and get more views to his echo chambered platform much like the people and many bots here.
@@pr0n3 I didn't see the whole interview so I can't comment on the general tone or motivation, but this was a perfectly legitimate question about a topic that many people are concerned about. There absolutely _is_ hate speech on the platform, it absolutely _did_ increase under Musk's ownership, and Musk was _wrong_ in his implication that there isn't. That a reporter wasn't prepared with an example doesn't change that fact.
How can companies even register a letter as their brand?
I do think an interviewer should be better prepared when planning to ask a question. As a non-twitterer, I really don’t understand why people are on it and think it is necessary to follow anyone. We did fine without out forever before.

IF you are STILL on this platform, you definitely need to re-think!

I'm so glad I've never touched Twitter/X in my 51 years and STILL don't feel like I NEED it in my life, thankfully!!
I despise people who use Twitter.
Yet another reason for why I'm thankful I chose to by the Chev Bolt instead of the Tesla...
From the start of Musk’s gross mishandling of Twitter, I have suspected that his goal has not been to make money but to cripple free public communication. From his actions, he’s a megalomaniac fascist, so such a goal would make sense. Though I believe his intelligence is greatly overrated, even he would not be stupid enough to damage the company as much as he has unless its stability and profitability were not primary concerns.
To this day, there is no really satisfactory replacement for Twitter. It would be wise to get one.
I said this a year ago and remember arguments I'd get into people about this exact issue, who were completely indignant that I could even suggest he'd do this... 'Don't you know how much 44 billion dollars is?!?!? It would make NO SENSE!'
Every single piece of evidence we have in front of us from his behavior and words is that he is a deeply DEEPLY ideologically driven and motivated right wing extremist. It's not that he's overtly driving it into a river and giving up all the money put into it, it's just that he cares WAY less than basically every other person on earth if they were in his position. And he's SAID it in interviews. 'I don't care about money, I will do things that I KNOW will lose me money if it advances what I want.' He's said that, explicitly.
And remember, Musk isn't the only owner of Twitter. He owns the bulk of it but a portion is also owned by the repressive rulers of Qatar and Saudi Arabia. They didn't throw money into it for financial benefit, they wanted something else.
@@lylewalker5681 : agreed. And re money, I would be surprised if he doesn’t have huge sums salted away in tax havens around the world. Why should he worry about a paltry $44 million if he can advance his agenda? Then too, promoting division and violence while undermining free communication also serves the purposes of enemies like Putin, so it’s possible that additional money comes into Musk’s accounts from secret sources. $44 million is really not much to these people if it buys what they want.
He is a hero and liberated public communication. Without him we would never have known about the government censorship behind the scenes.
He leans libertarian, not fascist. A fascist leaning person would've moderated twitter with much more strict control and would've been pro big government. Musk is neither.
