Thank you for this video. Wonderful. The cost of living is a very interesting topic. KL is a good place to stay, but the higher cost of living is creeping in Malaysia.
I am also retired but a Malaysian living in Malaysia. I have known many expatriates from Europe, and UK mainly. Most have been here for ages and they all say, although they get paid well over here, they cannot retire back in their own country.
Aloha ! You have for sure a good Life ! Love it how you show all counting things you enjoy with low costs -that`s a great remarcable fact👍🙏Thanks alot, nice walking again🤩
Try to venture to a couple of locations within Malaysia, such as, Taiping, Ipoh, Langkawi, Malacca, Cameron Highlands, Cherating, Penang, Kota Kinabalu. Would also suggest that you try Airbnbs, as their pricing is quite close to what you're paying for the hotel and the accommodation is expected to be better in terms of comfort.
What do you recommend among those places as the easiest and fastest to get to from KL? Which have the most peaceful environment? KL is too chaotic noisy and fast paced for me

Very nice comparison of expenditure and cost comparison between the USA and Kuala Lumpur. If you live outside the city centre, rental would be much cheaper. I would suggest one stay near one end of a subway or light-rail station and own a car if possible, make sure there is market or supermarket around, and have a good park around. Then you can enjoy your retirement there.
One thing that you could have touched on is the cost/need for a visa in order to stay in Malaysia long term. Currently, the MM2H requirements are high but there is hope that the rules will be relaxed some. Yes long term visas can be complicated true I only travel on arrival visa 30 to 90 days depending on the country I will look for a long term retirement destination in my 60s though
You don’t have to convince me how beautiful Kuala Lumpur is, I have visited it many times. You also don’t have to convince me how relatively cheap it is to live there compared to other developed countries. However, the elephant in the room that you seem to be missing, is the visa requirements that allows a person to “retire” in Malaysia. Malaysia does have a retirement visa for noncitizens, called MM2H, Malaysia My Second Home, however, unfortunately, the recent changes have made it too restrictive, at least, in my own case, to take advantage of your excellent suggestion.

The wisest advise for living overseas. I recommend walking with good supportive tennis shoes (I use New Balance, Hoka and Asics for extra wide feet), not a clog type of shoes (I think I saw that is the type you have in this video). I had lower back surgery and my orthopedic surgeon said to invest on good shoes for your feet and back. Clog type is not supporting the back side of your feet. Thanks for the great advise. It's useful for me who is retiring in less than a year.
Wow! You have just talked about a life style that i want to do! Sell my house in Colorado and move to Asia!. I am longing more and more for the tropics! No regrets on just meeting you now but also wish i had jotted over to Penang last year when i did Thailand and Vietnam! I had the choice to renew my Thailand visa in Penang, but i went to Vietnam instead to do that. Traveled some in Vietnam and returned to Thailand to fly back to the US. I am coming to the conclusion that i need a English speaking country, or Chinese. To get around and not being too frustrated figuring things out is a good approach for retirees. So being more strategic going overseas at my age of 77 is smart! If it is adventure still, i am game- I love living in foreign countries away from the US every so often! I was in Penang, and Singapore , Bali and other neighboring countries for a year in the early 90’s. I remember the food well in Penang,,,so gooood! And i had spent time in Mexico beach towns. Your home country of Hawaii is familiar to me. And being a creative free spirit, young at heart type and healthy enough lady, i still want to try to live in Asia, preferably near the ocean. Nice vid! What park (?) are you walking in this vid as I'm in KL for a month and evaluating things....especially my love of urban hiking destinations - thanks!
When did you decide and make sure that you are ready for retirement? There is “Rule of 300”, most probably you already know. “If you have the amount which covers 300 times of your montly expenses, you can retire.” Did you apply this approach? Or you calculated the sum of dividends’ payments per month and your rental properties’ income?
Hmm good question First I traveled to find out costs Then I reduced food and alcohol intake That gave me more income available Sold everything too Cars , items, things, storages haha
Retirement to Malaysia from a western country very contradictory - the actual living costs in Malaysia are quite inexpensive compared to the United States but the cost of the MM2H Visa is really high. A person has to show that they have a monthly income of over $8,000.00USD as well as a reserved account of at least 500,000 ringgit ($108,283), 2 million ringgit ($433,135) or 5 million ringgit ($1,082,837) based on three tiers - Silver, Gold and Platinum. Most retired Americans who are receiving $8,000. a month might as well just stay in the USA or find another country with easier visa access.
Yes the mm2h costs are totally out of whack with real cost of living here. It is an obvious money grab by the a Malaysian government..has nothing to do with the real monetary needs of an expat living here
@@RetireandGo It's sort of like a mini KL but with ocean breeze as an added bonus :) lots of beautiful old buildings, great food (of course), you can do your morning walk in and around Penang Hill. Easy connection via train to Bangkok/KL. I think I will retire there eventually, got a couple of decades to go yet :)
Aloha how goes it? Nice video. I like the sound of this. Planning to go there around the first of the year. I as well like to stay in hotels rather than Ab&b condos I like the social and better treatment. Could not find your video on hotel KL $14 a night can u send link. Thanks. In KL look for the OYO network of hotels Cheap and central located Usually for the visiting labor forces I like the low key low cost stay Free internet too
Tell me about it. I am in CA. $15.00 a night! With utilities included. You suggest a VPN. Is the Wifi generally trustworthy? Yes, until it is not. I like when you talk of the security situation. One could live there easy on social security. When i take my walks i count many who live in their cars & vans and it's a nice area.
I do find some strong WiFi either in hotels or coffee shops If I’m watching entertainment I don’t worry too much Anytime I connect to banks and investing accounts I use a VPN 100% of time
Retiring in SEA is a great idea unless you want to spend more than a few months in one country. Many of the retirement or long-term visas are getting very expensive or more restrictive. I've been to 40 countries and love to travel but at this stage, I want a low-cost home base where I can go anytime I want.
How welcoming is the expat community in KL? Is it easy to integrate into culture or is difficult with lots of cliques and always be viewed as outsider? I am in my mid 50s and currently, I have a few groups I hike/walk with and another group I kayak or paddleboard with. I also have friends that travel locally with me to visit the springs or state parks for long weekends. I am still working full time but I have a lots of vacation time due to my seniority at my job. Just wondering how feasible is Malaysia for my retirement in 2-3 years.
One of the best bids on living in Malaysia. Very practical and informative. I'd like to know the name of that beautiful park you are walking in, please?
I love Malaysia and hope to move back soon. I can do a digital nomad visa but I'm waiting to see the new MM2H visa requirements as I want to make Malaysia my home base. The high fixed deposit and monthly income of US$10K is too much. If I can't afford it, I might rent for 3 months at a time and then go elsewhere for 3 months. Rinse and repeat.
Hi I’m 51 and looking to move with my 2 teenagers how does it work, not planning on working there. Early retirement I guess. In the process of selling my home. Enjoying your video so far
You get 90 days visa when you arrive. Travelling to other Asian countries including to Australia is cheap using the budget airlines. So you could travel to Thailand or Vietnam and re enter for another 90 days.
So glad I found your channel! Can you tell me how much prescription drugs cost in Malaysia? For example how much for a month supply of zolpidem tartrate (generic for the sleep medication Ambien 10mg)? Also I'm curious to know the cost of a visit to the doctor for a well visit like when you just need prescription refills. And what about a sick visit ? Thankyou!!!
I know this medication and I have never found it over the counter anywhere in Asia unfortunately I like it for insomnia and air travel Overall prescriptions are cheap though
@@RetireandGo No, zolpidem tartrate is not an over the counter medication. I was asking how much it costs for prescription medications in Malaysia. I'm seriously considering moving there. I've basically narrowed it down to three countries and all the research I am doing is making Malaysia look better and better!
I don’t have any sponsors from health companies But Google top 5 travel healthcare insurance companies for Asia They are all about the same price $100 a month

Malaysian here who has been an expat in Manila, Bangkok and Jakarta for more than 10 years. Currently back in KL and loving every second and I’m contemplating to move to either Penang, Ipoh or Taiping to retire, although my hometown is in Malacca. I would say Malaysia offers the middle ground compared to our neighbours in terms of congestion, traffic, pricing, etc.
If I wanted to go from KLCC to for example, the opposite side of the peninsula to visit some beaches, would I be able to do that on public transportation alone?
@@RetireandGo Im moving to KL for work next week and will live there for about 2 years, I just wanted to get a grasp of how well connected public transportation is there. For example here in Korea, its really easy to go to the opposite end of the country and its fairly easy and cheap. I want to visit all the different parts of Malaysia but have no idea if I can do that through their buses and subways :)
I can’t wait to get rid of my car in Las Vegas. One of the highest car insurance areas in the country. Insurance company informs me that if I cancel my insurance and sell my car that, if I purchase a car in the future that my insurance rates will skyrocket because I will be considered an uninsured motorist. My car insurance rates will be as though I am a brand new 16-year-old driver. Unreal! Liability only insurance on a subcompact five-year-old car is currently $1200 per year with a perfect driving record.

Welcome and enjoy your time in Malaysia. I'm commenting because you are the 1st Westerners i saw who wear long sleeve shirt strolling on a tropical climate city.😁
Haha yes I understand
I
Love my linen
So light and comfortable
And protected from the sun
It dries after the rain so fast haha
😅😅😅
It wiukd be very nice except for the excessive heat. I notice no-one mentions that! Be prepared for skin complaints such as tinnia etc.
Hmm yeah Southeast Asia is high humidity and heat true
I will say the daily rain in KL felt so nice
thanx for all your videos plz let me know how to access money to avoid costs such as money conversion and so on
Yes of course
Check out online banks that use no overseas atm fee cards
This is the best way
Travel Visa cards too
No overseas conversion fees
what's the name of this park you are walking on this video?
Perdana botanical gardens
Really nice
Can you please recap the cost at the end? Safe travels! aloha!
I’ll work on this yes
I’m returning to Malaysia this year
I’ll do cost recaps
Nice vid! What park (?) are you walking in this vid as I'm in KL for a month and evaluating things....especially my love of urban hiking destinations - thanks!
Bird park
Huge!
They gave deer and large water areas too
Walking it every morning
awesome, that's tomorrow's plan! @@RetireandGo
Hmm good question
First I traveled to find out costs
Then I reduced food and alcohol intake
That gave me more income available
Sold everything too
Cars , items, things, storages haha
No long term visas for me
I just stay 90 days on arrival
Then I’m on to the next low cost country
Best way to spend a decade
Yes the mm2h costs are totally out of whack with real cost of living here. It is an obvious money grab by the a Malaysian government..has nothing to do with the real monetary needs of an expat living here
Hi, didn’t see the $8000 monthly income requirement. Is it on the official Mm2h website? Thanks
Kuala Lumpur is a fantastic city, I think you would like Penang also :)
Yes true
I’m going to try Penang later this year
@@RetireandGo It's sort of like a mini KL but with ocean breeze as an added bonus :)
lots of beautiful old buildings, great food (of course), you can do your morning walk in and around Penang Hill.
Thanks. Also I’m on TRT are there clinics and cost for some 411 if can can cannot cannot 😂 aloha I live in waimanalo
In KL look for the OYO network of hotels
Cheap and central located
Usually for the visiting labor forces
I like the low key low cost stay
Free internet too
The name of the hotel? I spent a month in KL in 2001 before 9/11, such a lovely place, incredible food choices. Plan to visit again soon.
I’m staying in some guest houses for a great price
They are low cost hotels for laborers
Perfect for me
Tell me about it. I am in CA. $15.00 a night! With utilities included. You suggest a VPN. Is the Wifi generally trustworthy? Yes, until it is not. I like when you talk of the security situation. One could live there easy on social security. When i take my walks i count many who live in their cars & vans and it's a nice area.
I do find some strong WiFi either in hotels or coffee shops
If I’m watching entertainment I don’t worry too much
Anytime I connect to banks and investing accounts I use a VPN 100% of time
Retiring in SEA is a great idea unless you want to spend more than a few months in one country. Many of the retirement or long-term visas are getting very expensive or more restrictive. I've been to 40 countries and love to travel but at this stage, I want a low-cost home base where I can go anytime I want.
Good point
Malaysia is at 90 days in arrival
Throw in 30 days in Thailand Vietnam Cambodia Laos
You can live cheap in Southeast Asia
@@RetireandGoThat is what I try to suggest. But you beat me to it😂😂😂
That’s a gorgeous park. What’s the name of it?
Search bird park
It’s part of a larger park complex
So nice !
I’ll be in Malaysia this year again
Great video! What is the visa type for American to retire in Malaysia other than the Second Home program(MM2H)?
There are visas available
Indonesia has a nice digital nomad visa now
I use tourist visas because I fly around a lot for the channel
How welcoming is the expat community in KL? Is it easy to integrate into culture or is difficult with lots of cliques and always be viewed as outsider?
I am in my mid 50s and currently, I have a few groups I hike/walk with and another group I kayak or paddleboard with. I also have friends that travel locally with me to visit the springs or state parks for long weekends. I am still working full time but I have a lots of vacation time due to my seniority at my job. Just wondering how feasible is Malaysia for my retirement in 2-3 years.
It’s very international
Check out the hookah places
Also the night food markets / food courts
Natasha wants retirees there
Go for a month, explore and look into this ok?
Hmm, where is this park you are walking? It looks serene. Any mosquitoes?
This park is right next to the main downtown area of KL
There is a bird park and a deer park in it as well ! Incredible
So peaceful to walk everyday
One of the best bids on living in Malaysia. Very practical and informative.
I'd like to know the name of that beautiful park you are walking in, please?
Search bird park in KL
Several parks together
Nice video.
How about language? Will English work for most situations?
Oh yes
I have no problem at all
whats the name of the Park ?
Search bird park
It’s part of a large complex of beautiful parks
Might be cheaper to get an AirBnb where you get the pool, gym, Wi-Fi, and others. The $2 might be for the tourist tax
Those amenities would be awesome for sure
Transport pass for a month in kuala lumpur what would that cost
Oh really? I like that !
How do I get information about settling in Kualumpur?
Settle I’m not sure
But it’s 90 days on arrival !
Just go
Look into it while you are there
Good vlog, the important thing is we dont have karen here😀😀
Haha true good point
Your ending dinner, can you see if they have Guinness or Marmite ribs. Try that.
Oh my that sounds good for sure
I would love some beer marinated ribs like that
@@RetireandGo Usually they use a can of Guinness stout for it. Do you also go to PJ suburbs to stay?
What's the name of that Park where you go for your morning walk ?
Bird park
There is also deer park
It’s park of a group of parks
So much land ! Walk all morning
This Perdana Botanical Garden aslo known as Lake Garden.
Great video! Which park were you walking in?
Search for bird park
It’s a complex of many parks together
You can walk all morning
I’m returning to KL this year
I love Malaysia and hope to move back soon.
I think this is a great plan
I’m doing 30 days each country
Just for now
Seems like they don't want Cheap Charlie expats there. Requirements for long-term visas are skyrocketing all across SEA.
Hi I’m 51 and looking to move with my 2 teenagers how does it work, not planning on working there. Early retirement I guess. In the process of selling my home. Enjoying your video so far
There are international schools
You might find it interesting and educational for them !
The particulars of moving with a family I do not know
Great video. What areas of the City have crime that concerns you?
I will tell you I walked KL at night
And stayed in a labor style hotel
All fine
In daylight, everywhere in the city is practically safe.In nighttime, after 12 just stay away from quiet n dark places
You get 90 days visa when you arrive. Travelling to other Asian countries including to Australia is cheap using the budget airlines. So you could travel to Thailand or Vietnam and re enter for another 90 days.
Yes true
I’m thinking eventually set up a rotation in Asia
KL would be there every year
Thoughts ?
@@RetireandGoThat would be the ideal way
Alhamdullilah Syukur... Malaysia is Most Affordable County at SE Asia... Subhanallah...
It is quite amazing
I paid 16 dollars a night for my room in Kuala Lumpur
It had WiFi, all utilities included
10 Ringgit per day is tourism tax usd 2.
14 usd per day is damn good= 420usd per month. 2000usd to 3000 usd rental in hawaii is crazy.
So true
Expensive in Hawaii
That’s why I can’t retire there
Good morning mr GI Joe (retired)
Haha :-)
Good morning to you as well
So glad I found your channel! Thankyou!!!
I know this medication and I have never found it over the counter anywhere in Asia unfortunately
I like it for insomnia and air travel
Overall prescriptions are cheap though
@@RetireandGo No, zolpidem tartrate is not an over the counter medication. I was asking how much it costs for prescription medications in Malaysia. I'm seriously considering moving there. I've basically narrowed it down to three countries and all the research I am doing is making Malaysia look better and better!
Have you been sick from any of the food carts? I got sick at a resort in Malaysia.
No sick from any food
I try to go light on red chilis haha
Thanks 🙏
You are most welcome :-)
I am amazed that you can stand the heat and humidity walking around so much in Malaysia. 😮😂
It’s hot yes haha
But I’m from Hawaii
the link for health insurance pls
I don’t have any sponsors from health companies
But Google top 5 travel healthcare insurance companies for Asia
They are all about the same price
$100 a month

I’ll do more videos on it
Dental in Thailand though
KL may sound good to visitors , but for me retiring in ipoh, taiping will be nice.
Tailing , interesting
I need to visit so many more locations
Malaysian here who has been an expat in Manila, Bangkok and Jakarta for more than 10 years. Currently back in KL and loving every second and I’m contemplating to move to either Penang, Ipoh or Taiping to retire, although my hometown is in Malacca. I would say Malaysia offers the middle ground compared to our neighbours in terms of congestion, traffic, pricing, etc.
@@Tube152525 I want to visit Penang
@@Tube152525why not retire in Malacca? I am planning a trip there. I heard some say it is like penang but nicer?
If I wanted to go from KLCC to for example, the opposite side of the peninsula to visit some beaches, would I be able to do that on public transportation alone?
The rail service is first rate
I need to explore the bus services more
I also want to check out a few beaches
What is your time frame on travel ?
@@RetireandGo Im moving to KL for work next week and will live there for about 2 years, I just wanted to get a grasp of how well connected public transportation is there. For example here in Korea, its really easy to go to the opposite end of the country and its fairly easy and cheap. I want to visit all the different parts of Malaysia but have no idea if I can do that through their buses and subways :)
Do make one one Johor Bahru.
I’m not sure !
This is a location? I’ll check in this
I am returning to Malaysia this year

I can’t wait to get rid of my car in Las Vegas. One of the highest car insurance areas in the country. Insurance company informs me that if I cancel my insurance and sell my car that, if I purchase a car in the future that my insurance rates will skyrocket because I will be considered an uninsured motorist. My car insurance rates will be as though I am a brand new 16-year-old driver. Unreal! Liability only insurance on a subcompact five-year-old car is currently $1200 per year with a perfect driving record.
Oh my I totally understand
I was told that too
Goodness they get us don’t they? Haha
Any family that can use it while you are gone ?
What’s the name of the hotel where you’re staying on a monthly basis for $14 a night
