  • Back in February 2021, Eric shared why and how he decided to make a very big cut to his largest Portulacaria afra in this video, "One Dramatic Cut to a Large Dwarf Jade" • Bonsaify | Large Cut o... . Today, he shares how it's progressed over the past six months, and what he plans to do next.
    The big dramatic cut removed almost all of the foliage of this tree. It's exciting to see how nicely it's budded out since. Eric plans for it to become a nearly shohin-size bonsai. He explains why he is now in ramification mode with this Dwarf Jade.
    1:23 Eric cuts the shoots back to one pair of leaves. Portulacaria will send out two new shoots when you cut just past the base of leaves. If you don't do this trim work, you'll end up with long branches and long nodes. Doing this work builds a nice fine structure that leads to really good-looking bonsai.
    3:08 Eric makes a big cut on a large branch!

    “Today were gonna do a bit of followup” in comes the saw and out goes half of the tree, your grin is priceless 😂😂😂. I recently became a grandma 4 months ago and her name is Jade. So my intention is to do a bonsai with a Jade although I’ve always thought that a Jade plant cannot be called a bonsai. I am making an exception because of my beautiful granddaughter😄. Mind you I stopped with bonsai more then 20 years ago, so I have lots of intentions but the Jade will be my first since it’s an indoor plant and I want it to give it to my granddaughter on her first birthday 🎁 😄

    Do you have any updates on this tree since this video?

      As of now, no I don't think I've made one. But the tree is looking a lot more like a bonsai these days. It still needs some work and tweaking though. I'll put it on my list of topics.

    How often do you do the cutbacks?

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  2 роки тому +1

      It depends a little on the stage that the tree is in - but with rough work like this we let the branches extend 6-10" before pruning back. When the tree is more refined you would trim more frequently to avoid allowing branches to get too coarse.

      @@Bonsaify Thanks. They grow so profusely here that they send out 5-10cm of growth in a few months. I'm just wondering whether to cut mine constantly to keep them ramifying or to let them grow and get some energy back into the tree

      @@tangledtanuki They're super strong in the right conditions - I would think you'd want to keep yours trimmed if it's vigorous and already has a good shape.
