  • Do you know what the little problem is with Mame bonsai? In this video, Eric addresses this problem using an Elm bonsai.
    0:43 A very simple way to create a mini-bonsai is to take a cutting (Eric demonstrates using a Cotoneaster), stick it into a mame bonsai container, and get it to start to root. While the cutting can root, the problem with this method is that the tree is too little, and it will take a long time to form enough wood to become an interesting bonsai.
    1:43 A second method is to create small material (our example is a Cork Bark Elm variety) by placing a cutting from last year that has been wired already into a mame container. While this method produces bonsai that has have some interesting movement, since there's almost no size to the trunk, it needs to be placed into a very small container, and that really increases the level of difficulty.
    2:33 A third method is using propagation techniques. Eric explains how he is working towards creating a sumo-style Elm mame bonsai using this method. This particular tree was actually part of the top of a more established bonsai.
    6:10 The stepping down process to a smaller mame container; when to move the tree into a smaller container and how to choose the right mame container for your tree.
    7:14 wiring to take the tree to it's next step to mame.
    10:25 the value of using tweezers for mame bonsai wiring work.

    Love these videos !! May i ask what kind of soil mix you use for young material to promote growth such as that smaller elm in the video. Thank you

      @Bonsaify  3 роки тому +2

      We use mostly 80% perlite and 20% coco coir for your material, but that particular tree was in a regular peat-moss based potting soil (not sure how that happened since we don't even have any around). For older bonsai, and for most things in bonsai containers we use akadama-lava-pumice.

    Where do you get your mame containers from? I have struggled to find really small pots

      Great question! We do sell a few at the moment, and more coming on Bonsaify.com. However it seems the demand is outstripping the supply in the US right now. If you have a particular shape/style and size in mind, drop us an email from the Bonsaify site contact page since we have a lot that are not listed yet on the site. Also check out my unboxing video for PIT-EKA.com and Sorce's pots. (he makes a few...but on the large end of mame.)

    It looks like the cutting was fairly large (3/4”??) yet you got it to root? Any special techniques/considerations to have success with larger cuttings?

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  Рік тому +2

      Yes, it was a bit large. Bottom heat, mist and humidity are the keys. Rooting hormone of the appropriate concentration also.

    Do you use regular bonsai soil for growth or just regular garden soil for growth?

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  3 роки тому +2

      Hi! We use regular bonsai soil - Akadama:Lava:Pumice 1:1:1 for most bonsai. For seedlings we use 80% perlite and 20% coco coir to save weight and costs. It actually grows faster than bonsai mix.

    Is there a favorite tweezer you use ?

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  Рік тому +1

      I have probably six pair of tweezers, but the standard ones we have on our site are probably me go-to for everything other than repotting and soil work.
