Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Review

- Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 reviewed by Chris Reed on Xbox Series X, also available on PlayStation 5 and PC.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is a terrific third-person shooter with a compelling story, loads of weapons that are a blast to use, and a healthy variety of enemies to use them on. It once again borrows many of its ideas from the Gears of War series, but they’re good ideas, and Space Marine 2 does a fine job of making them its own. And while the Operations PvE mode that accompanies it doesn’t currently offer enough to keep me coming back, the deep customization options for your Space Marine do look promising if it’s supported in post-launch updates as planned. Besides, when you’re eviscerating aliens on planets as pretty as these, it’s hard not to leave satisfied.

“In the grim darkness…”
Is a phrase so extreme and so rich with absurdism that it should be obvious that anything following on from it should be satire. As someone who’s been a fan of 40K for the last 25 years, reading this kind of thing makes me really sad. It’s always been a satire. And not a very subtle satire either. How can you read the tagline of the entire franchise and walk with the *opposite* of the intended effect?

Bro. Its Warhammer. There is NO humour.
Ciaphas Cain, the Infinite and the Divine, there’s lots of humor. But it’s always tonally appropriate.
You can absolutely put humour into 40k, darktide for example has the funny voice lines and even the more serious books like the night lords trilogy have some kinda funny moments in them. And Space marine 1 had the orks of course.
It really depends on the type of humour and how to insert it.
@@LordCrate-du8zm Ciaphas Cain is really more the exception and not the rule though. His stories are intended to be more on the humorous side within this otherwise very bleak and “grimdark” universe. Cain is not a supersoldier like the Astartes are, he’s just a human commissar trying to keep himself alive through sheer wits, determination, logic, and luck. So, naturally, he has a very different outlook on life than any of these badass Space Marines do.
But even then, Cain’s humor is often told from his own internal monologues and there’s very little “Marvel quippy-humor” from him at all. Externally, he appears to everyone as though he is always daring, charismatic, and stoic in the face of danger; even though internally he keeps saying to himself how scared shitless he is (not willing to admit to himself how brave he actually is when under extreme duress).

I never got into anything Warhammer, so I dont know if it stays true to what real enthusiasts enjoy about it. But as shooters go, this is pretty good. Its simple and standard as shooters go. The story and action is what you'd expect a shooter to be, just straight forward, nothing complicated. The enemies remind me a lot of the xenomorphs, which im sure has been used in other games (Contra comes to mind).
