Every version has its charm. My favorite... I burned heaps of batteries together with my friend on the Atari Lynx with the multiplayer cable. An excellent version.
We had the Sega Master System version. I didn't even play an arcade-perfect version of Rampage until I got Midway Arcade Treasures for Playstation 2 and I feel the Sega Master System is actually an improvement because it has fewer cities and an ending. "Fewer cities" might not seem like it would be an improvement but Rampage is really only fun in short bursts due to extremely repetitive gameplay and I was getting very bored just trying to see each city in the arcade game before it loops back to the first one.
It's not often that we get to see a CoCo port. Being that this one is a CoCo 3 exclusive explains the decent quality of it. The Amiga version looks and sounds quite impressive. Everything in the EU C64 game was really zipping around at a hectic pace.
I swear the Atari Lynx was so ahead of it's time and doesn't get the credit it deserves. I loved that thing more then my NES console. That thing rocked just look at the graphics it was pushing out in 1986 and was handheld.
But if I watch it. It seems the ' eat detection ' Is off on the Amiga version. Those soldiers should be grabbed and eaten not killed by punches. NES had the ' eat detection ' correct.
One of the few times the Atari ST is way better than the Amiga. Atari ST has bigger sprites, music as well as sound fx, and also allows you to choose AI to fill in missing players. I had the Amiga version but I always preferred playing it at my friend's house (one of the very few times)
Lynx port was 4 player (adding Larry the Rat who still managed to make it into the movie) but it meant requiring 4 Lynxs and each a copy of the game. Not many people owned 1 Lynx and not many of them had even 1 other friend with a Lynx, never mind 4 Lynx owers all together.
oh, didnt know there was different versions for the c64, eu/usa, learned something new :D master system version looked kinda unique, also surprisingly the atari st had music i kinda would have expected on a c64 port, i got c64 "Knight Tyme" vibes listening to the tune.
The C64 game IO has an almost identical title music as the Atari ST music here. I suspect in this case IO has stolen the music (release date 1988, while this is marked as 1987)
Apparently the same composer, David Whittaker made the music for ST version of Rampage, Knight Tyme and IO so no wonder if there are similarities and recycled themes. 😉
I love this game on my CPC. 3 players and it's the only one with the music from Trojan, which oddly fits this game so well, I find it weird to play a Rampage that doesn't have that music. Still not sure how that even happened. Trojan never came out on CPC so how did that music end up in CPC Rampage? :O
The screen shaking on the European C64 version is a nice effect that I didn't see in any other versions. Not the best graphics but the game was fast and fun to play.
Yeah Atari ST or Master System, I think Atari ST wins because it has 3 player coop and also AI to fill in more missing players so you can have a 3 player by yourself.
@@Random_Person. Yeah but 3 player is better gameplay, like literally 50% more fun and when me and when 3 of my mates all play together (we only played this game on 3 player or not at all) taking it in turns between levels on the master system version sucked. Not to mention playing on a 1 button joystick felt better than the Master System dpad which tended to hurt my thumb after a while.
@@Random_Person. Always wanted to play the lynx version and try the rat. The zoomed in view though where it's impossible to see dynamite being thrown at you until it's too late. After watching it on youtube I think the lynx version might be worse than the Amiga version (the one I had but I didn't like so much despite being 3 player) the view is just too zoomed in, like you probably don't even see your friends half the time, I would prefer to play the Master System version over the Amiga and maybe even the Arcade. Arcade looks nice, but no music and no ending? That is one great thing about Lynx version I guess, at least it has an ending. I don't think there is one single perfect version of Rampage, sadly.
It’s a shame Coleco was out of the video game market by this point. It would have been interesting to see what Rampage would have looked like on the Colecovision.
