It's about time Brian Jones got his due. His life was a great success and tragedy in only 27 years.
Do you actually know anything about Brian Jones? I actually am totally, unabashedly, "into" Brian, but do not gloss over the fact he was indeed quite the bastard. Fathered at least 5 kids, quite a few before the stones even began. Didnt acknowledge any of them.
My very next door neighbour in Hammersmith (where I grew up), was one of his very closest friends; her partner is the famous musician George "Zoot" Money, still at it at 81.
Brian was indeed incredibly gifted, apparently being able to master many instruments rapidly. But his interpersonal skills and rivalry with Mick, paranoia not helped by overindulging in you know what, all took a toll. He did indeed pack much into his years, and I do believe that something afoul occured at Cotchford Farm.
He does - but sadly not sure this documentary did that. Seems like more of a hatchet job than a new appraisal of his contribution to the great rock and roll band which - lets not forget - he founded. Yeah he had his personal faults - what great rock and roll icons dont? - but theres no question he was both the driving force behind the stones (until 1967) and a brilliant instrumentalist who's little musical tweaks helped make the stones what they were. Also really disappointed to see that this doc perpetuated the tired old myth he was ravaged by drugs and 'washed up' when he had his fatal 'accident' - thats simply not true (and shows really lazy research by nick broomfield). Brian was 'clean' and looking forward to embarking on a new more blues oriented musical career when he sadly died (bent coppers, people with links to the criminal underworld and certain people in the music industry ensured the truth about what happened that nite never came out)

To this day I still believe that he had to be "done away with" because of his vision. With his talent as a multi-instrumentalist and an organizer, most like his "new" band may have outpaced and outdo his first band that he formed and named. Somewhere between being fired and dying, someone had their hand in their hand and timing of his death. We shall never know what would have become of him and his "new" band. Too bad he didn't "sue" Jagger and Richards for stealing his band away from him!
There would have been no Rolling Stones without Brian Jones. Period.

The slide guitar on No Expectations is his masterpiece.
It was great but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece.
The entire piece was 30 seconds long repeated 8 times without variation. Everything he played was either sliding up to a simplified version of the chord Keith is playing or duplicating the melody that Mick sings, note for note As Mick called it ...Pretty ...But a masterpiece? Hardly
The masterpiece was Micks deeply emotional delivery of his moving lyrics and Keith's brilliant melody and inventive chord inversions

Formed the band, taught them to play the blues, how to be decadent, was the first rock star to raid the women’s department, played marimba keyboards sitar dulcimer all brass instruments theremin what else? A world class musical expeditionary. What came first, Brian getting the freeze-out from the band he created or his “decline”? The popular myth is that he was destined for an early grave, the reality is he should still be alive and being endlessly creative.
All true but Brian’s downfall was that he could not accept Mick’s defacto position as leader of the Stones by virtue of his being the lead singer and songwriter along with Keith. The other reason is his inability or unwillingness to write songs for the band. These two things contributed to his being sidelined and to his downward spiral. Sometimes in life you have to be able to accept circumstances as they present themselves, as Bill, Charlie and Ronnie did, or leave, as Mick Taylor did.

Also when you take a handful of pills, having no idea what any of them are, and sort of 'hope for the best', which turns you in to a babbling, incoherent mess who can't stand on his own, then you sort of forgo your de facto position of leader of anything. Mick and Keith may have taken drugs too, but at least they knew what they hell they were taking, and took one or two, not 20! That's a sub-plot that does factor in to his decline. He had no off switch and didn't know how to say 'no' or 'no more!'. Mick and Keith knew when to stop. So there's that, too. Brian "created his decline", in your words. I'm sure Mick Jagger and Keith Richards would have loved to have had a lucid, cogent, relatively sober, articulate, creative Brian Jones in the band, if they could only find him!

Stones were never the same band without him. THEY needed HIM. He always added something to those songs that really made them better than they were. I don't think the Stones have ever shown the appreciation for his contribution to their work. To this day, they just seem like they want to forget he was ever there. But, listen to 'Paint it Black, Under my Thumb, Mothers Little Helpers, Ruby Tuesday' just to name a few. He IS there. RIP Mr Brian Jones!
Honestly I feel that the stones best material came after brian was replaced with Mick Taylor.
Good lord, the albums they made after him are some of the greatest albums in music history. He just wanted them regurgitating the same blues rhythms over and over.

Got to see The Stones & Brian Jones documentary on the big screen recently. It was for a film festival and the place was packed. Nick Broomfield and Bill Wyman definitely made sure Brian's musical contributions were front and center; I even heard audience members saying afterward that Brian should have received more credit! 😁 The women in Brian's life were a very strong presence throughout the documentary, which is awesome. 👩 And most of all, the lesson I took away is, when you see someone having a hard time in life, be a friend. Say something. Just be kind. ❤
I read that Jagger and Richards enjoyed playing him to arouse him, to anger him. The Power Struggles began when Jagger and Richards were chosen by Oldham to write a-l-l the lyrics and songs. Jones was definitely out of the running for sure. He became depressed and sullen that his love of the band he formed and named and got the places to play their music was all diminishing before him. Anita Pallenberg turning on him and heading to Richards. His life, as he saw it, was spinning out-of-control.

I know there's parts where Bill Wyman plays Little Red Rooster and Ruby Tuesday in his house and comments on them. Other than that, I don't think so.@@tomcarl8021

I remember hearing about Brian Jones's death on A.M. radio when I was a kid. It is sad that he passed at such a young age.

When the boys realized they had to stop relying on covers or even Lennon/McCartney for a song and that they had to begin to write their own tunes, evidently Mick and Keith stepped up and Brian could/would not.That was said to be a real flash point .One of my fav early Stones song is “Heart Of Stone” and I loved Brian’s haunting background vocal.
Brian stepped up when it came to experimenting with unusual instruments. He was basically their George Martin.
I will never understand why Brian didn’t or couldn’t write songs. Even Bill got a song in!
@@jayhpaq I watched the doc and they comment on it. He could write songs and sing but he seems to have had this mental block presenting them to people. He probably thought they weren't good enough. I don't think he thought Satisfaction and JJF were good enough.
@@jayhpaq Brian actually did write music, did the soundtrack for a German film called "A Degree of Murder". Jimmy Page played guitar on the songs Brian wrote for the soundtrack. Never released due to contractual reasons. But you can find it on UA-cam....

Yes, I get it. Brian was great, talented, the founder and initial impetus for the Stones. But like many founders, his vision only went so far. The Stones are great because of all the contributions to the band from the Beatles who helped them early on with music, introduced them to their first real management and became the perfect foil, with their clean cut image. Andrew Oldham encouraged M & K to write their own music, Alex Korner gave them a place to play, John Mayhall introduced them to Mick Taylor. The Small Faces gave up Ronnie. What about their great side musicians, not limited to; Bobby Keys, Nicky Hopkins, Ry Cooder, Graham Parsons, Mary Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Ian McLagin, Charles Leavell, Daryl Jones, Steve Jordan, and many more amazing contributors. All the influencers and hangers-on made a difference such as, Maryann Faithful, Anita Pallenberg, Bianca, Jerry Hall, Pattie Hansen, Shirley Ann Shepard and Margaret Trudeau to name a few. Or the authorities, from the tax-man who drove them out of London, to the police who hounded them from many localities, the drug use, the hated Allen Klein, not to mention Brian, Mick, Keith, Bill, Charlie, Ian Stewart, Mick T and Ronnie themselves. What about all the wonderful musical producers and engineers like Glyn Johns, the fantastic Jimmy Miller, Steve Lillywhite, Don Was, Andrew Watts and of course, the Glimmer Twins. Also, the Stones started due to their love of Blues music which drove the mod scene in London, where by chance they all lived. The list of musical contributors is enormous and includes, the London Mod scene, Chuck Berry, Howlin Wolf, the Kinks, the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Lady Gaga, other 60’s, 70’s and 80’s bands to name a few. My point, is that yes Brian was the spark, named them and initially was the leader, but stopped being so around 1966 (57 years ago). He declined due to drug use, then was kicked out of the band. The Stones went on to create an unequaled subsequent run, of four of the greatest albums of all time - without Brian. Whether or not you like the direction of the band post Brian is up to you, but the remaining members and all the influences I mentioned above make them relevant today - the greatest rock band of all time. Thank you Brian for your contributions and wonderful work, but no one person defines The Rolling Stones.
In other words, you're not too familiar with Brian's crucial contributions in '66 and '67. I suggest you familiarize yourself before commenting.

Keith and Mick's band was Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys. Brian had no band anymore at that point. He asked Keith if he could join Keith's band with the ONLY guy who answered his advert, IAN Stewart.
Keith agreed.

The myth that Brian decided to form a band and auditioned every member and hand picked who he wanted is a blatant lie and over the years it has become a widespread myth. The fact is that Brian joined Keith's band and then that band changed their name to the Rolling Stones.

Keith liked how Ian played boogie woogie piano, a lot, so he agreed and they both joined the Blue Boys...KEITH'S BAND.
Their first major success was playing at the Marque Club in Soho . Brian had nothing to do with getting that gig. Korner's band Blues Incorporated was doing a BBC TV show and couldn't do their regular gig at the Marquee so he asked MICK if the Blue Boys could fill in for them that night. Mick had been sitting in with Korners band a lot around that time.

Mean spirited? Not sure what you watched. The entire documentary is about how he founded the Stones and was the driving force. Sounds more like you're upset that Broomfield didn't indulge in conspiracy theories.

There's a better documentary on Brian called 'The Life and Death of Brian Jones'. This documentary is good but they do not show his award-winning prowess at swimming and question his very suspicious death. He drowned in 'Fresh Water' the autopsy says, so WHY was he found in his swimming pool in chlorine water? It is great that Brian is getting respect and his due for forming HIS legendary band. Only Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts respected him and went to his funeral. See this film to find out Brian's genius that the Jealous 'Glummer Twins' cruel treatment outed him from his own band.
I like both documentaries, but conspiracy theories only hurt the credibility. From what I've read, "fresh water" in a report just means "not the ocean."

Dissapointing flick to much focus on sex and drugs. Aside from Bill Wymsn's insights Brian's incredible musical contributions are barely mentoined. Aftermath, Buttons, Majesties and Banquet to name a few

I've actually listened to two of their songs; Wild Horses and Paint it Black. I also heard their cover of The Beatles' song, I Wanna Be Your Man.

I interviewed Anita Pallenberg, who was Brian's girlfriend before she ended up with Keith. This was in 1984. She had nothing good to say about him. He was physically violent with her.
Obviously that was wrong; Brian likely had psychological issues. That said, they were physically violent with each other, and she introduced him to drugs when he was clearly already mentally vulnerable. And she did have good things to say about him over the years as well. Not to mention Keith didn't let her work when they got together and the two of them were heroin addicts at the expense of their children. No one is innocent here, there is no reason to single Brian out. I suggest watching the new documentary, many women in Brian's life participated and spoke very well of him despite his troubles.

But he didn't because he died. So yes,he wasted his talent and life.Plus he stopped playing the guitar ,which was his major role in the band at the end.The other things he added to some of their songs are great ,but it's not enough. He didn't do it on all their songs. They were a five piece band.All of them contributed their parts even if they were not all songwriters. Near the end He contributed less to the band ,mainly because of his drug usage. Even Keith ,who also had a drug problem,at least still did his part in the band. What good would Brian be on stage on those songs that didn't have his additions?Playing a tambourine or maracas instead of the guitar on stage for the majority of the time? Or Maybe being a backup singer? Those are sideman jobs, not what core members of a band do.
