I’ll give this movie one thing- the reasoning behind the traps & why people are in them are actually pretty good. In half the later Saw movies it’s like “you’re a smoker? Death.”
You use antidepressants for your depression? Death.
You’re a victim of spousal abuse? Death.
You accidentally stepped on an ant? Death.
VI: "Smoker working for a corrupt company? DEATH"
VII: "Married to someone who lied to you ? DEATH"
Jigsaw: "Did irresponsible things as a teenager? DEATH"
You put the milk in the bowl before the cereal: Death, now you will drown in milk
Protip to any future writers: If you don't want your audience to immediately figure out who your mystery villain is. Don't give him a last name that's pronounced Shank!
And don't show literally every character EXCEPT for that one die

When he said “John Kramer didn’t target cops” he meant he didn’t target cops specifically, as in he didn’t go after the police force, or any collective group for that matter. He targeted individuals based on their actions, whether they be cops or not. The new Spiral Killer specifically targeting the police force does not fit Kramer’s MO, nor any of his disciples.
Didn't john Kramer in saw 2 specifically go after a group of people that where all framed by 1 cop? And also in at least the first 3 he goes after almost every cop or detective that tries to arrest him. I know it's not a specific police force or anything and it doesn't fit perfectly but I'm just saying it might be a nitpick at a nitpick of a dumb line.
@@victorweiss2833 They JUST said he didn't EXCLUSIVELY target cops. He didn't EXCLUDE cops, he just didn't make a literal pig-cop puppet and exclusively kill cops, it's not that complicated. Also it's worth remembering these aren't random civillians AND it's been a long time since Saw VII, everyone presumably knows that Kramer specifically died in Saw III and there were accomplices with different motives.
Imo the biggest flaw with this Saw besides length is the twist being telegraphed. It would have been nice to have never actually seen a kill, only follow Chris Rock's character as he tries to piece it together from the results and giving us flashbacks to them, that way it's perfectly reasonable both to show us the Rookie dying AND him to be wrong, especially when it decides to emphasis how much he's losing it after the Rookie dies. I think this could have been the best Saw since the second if it'd gotten another draft or two.
i laughed everytime i heard ( i want to play a game ), sounds like some fat white kid. definitely couldn't take the saw killer serious this movie
Yeah, at least this serial killer had a halfway decent motive as opposed to "this dude smoked his whole life" and "this grieving mother is handling the death of her child the way I want her to".
@victorweiss2833 the only police officer that John targeted for being a dirty cop was Mathews. Other cops that were targeted were targeted because they were either convenient and fit John’s ideological requirements or in Hoffman’s case he simply needed to get rid of them. Every cop that was targeted except Mathew’s was due to things that didn’t necessarily involve their profession. You could argue Kerry and Riggs, but ultimately it was more about their obsession than their choice of career.

This is why I love Dead Meat. Even though he didn't like the movie, He still talked about how much effort the crew put into it and he's respectful of other peoples opinions. I hate certain movie reviewers that either take it too seriously, hate on people that disagree with them, or just overexaggerate things. I know that Dead Meat isn't really a movie review, but he has some elements of being a reviewer.
James has made jokes about being a movie reviewer, so technically he is. He just focuses on the bodies dropping. It's why he craps on Thankskilling instead of just going "here's the dead bodies, bye."
His opinions on Jason Takes Manhatton is great haha “This movie suuuuuucks”
I did love how he had finger traps too
i love how even if he hates the film like thankskilling he still gives it a 15 minute video of tge kills and behind of the scenes gotta love his effort
I agree. There are those who write the movies, and those who make the movies. I thought the plot was terrible, but the behind the scenes stuff was great.
I love that final kill cause doesn’t just resemble a puppet, it’s literally pulling the strings and manipulating his movements. The way the movie makes you think that zeke is going to be framed as the crazy guy with a gun and turning it around is so cool
The tongue trap is literally unwinnable, there's so many veins and muscles in the tongue you'd bleed out before you even made it to the end of that tunnel
@R G non surviveable traps are boring af, dude.

Since it's not John Kramer, the traps are bound to be unfair since he doesn't share his rhetoric

@@RandomBubble The behind the scenes are just awesome. Favorite of mine is Dawn of the Dead.
Exactly
I understand the impulse to show the gory results of a trap killing someone, but the scenario of surviving a trap that's not guaranteed to kill someone feels a little underused. We have Amanda in the Reverse Bear Trap (EDIT: forgot she had to kill someone, oops), then two characters beating unsurvivable traps (Strahm and Hoffman), but almost every Jigsaw survivor was paired with other people who had to die in their trap. I think the reason people saw the the first film as more sophisticated was that it had scary scenarios without feeling compelled to show the worst outcomes of every single one, and a character being a survivor of their Jigsaw experience automatically makes them more interesting in the plot going forward.
I see you everywhere man. Where am I going to see you next thicc pawg teen twerk videos
No one surviving the traps really took something from this film
While I do agree with you, I honestly think that the point of the traps in this film were to appear to be survivable but actually is completely impossible to survive. John Kramer's motive was to make people realise the value of living whereas this guy just wants to punish dirty cops. If they survive, how would it change anything in a positive way other than putting a huge target on the guys back? As an example of the perceived survival in these traps, the finger pulling one is impossible to survive as the person was complying with the task completely but a short break caused him to be electrocuted which I think would have happened either way. I do agree with you in that the fact that there are several survivors of jigsaws traps makes each trap more valuable as we don't know how it's going to go but this film is more like if John died and Amanda completely took over as she had conflicting motives. Sorry that this is off topic but I don't have anyone irl to share my theories with😂
@@LunaBeth97 i agree 100% with your comparison to Amanda. These traps can seem either ameteurish or rigged against the victims because they’re dirty cops. I’d like to see someone survive in the next one though!
The Saw movies are a victim of caring more about the gore and creating the absurdly over the top nonsense lore that people gravitated to in the first couple films. Its a shame thay we'll likely never see a more grounded and believable Saw style of story.

@@mr.minioncat2187 I like Samuel Jackson too
Disagree. This felt exactly like a Saw movie to me.
This movie wasn't terrible, but I hate that it was easy to guess the antagonist from the trailer alone. Plus, the skinning scene solidified that it was definitely him. And how can they introduce Lawrence Gordon as the OG without continuing?!
I guessed it was him since he was kinda the only really good bloke throughout the film
Yeah as soon as he came on screen I guessed it was him, and I guessed pretty much everything after, especially the crying baby scene that was obvious it was fake crying, I literally guessed the exact details of it, this movie was painfully predictable.
It was one of the worst movies of the year
That's my problem with most "teaser" trailers these days, be it for movies or video games. They just spoil too much to generate hype that when the thing comes out, half of the plot you know already.
@@NokoFace or if its a particularly bad movie, the trailer shows all the good parts, or in the case of suicide squad i dont even think half the trailer was in the movie bc the full movie was so boring compared to how the trailer made it look

I think the issue James is having with the movie is that he’s seeing it as a Saw movie. It’s not, it’s in the same universe, but it’s not a sequel. I do, however, agree that Chris Rock’s comedy fell a little flat. It felt forced. The suspense and overall mystery throughout the film was very well done. I
I agree specially the twilight part. Man, that's where i realized he's trying so hard to put some humor around the movie. But i love the forest gump part.
I agree I loved the mystery element
@Geo ok I made fun of that joke earlier because of the statement itself being jarring but it was lowkey hilarious
Then they shouldn't call it a saw movie. That's a shit defense
you what?
I think the “Jigsaw didn’t target cops” line meant that he didn’t SPECIFICALLY target cops- his targets were anybody who did wrong in his eyes, it just so happened that a lot of people who did wrong were dirty cops, in contrast to this killer who is only killing cops.
This
He killed cops but it wasn’t the bread and butter for him and the vast majority weren’t cops
Also he specified Kramer but the examples used were Amanda who didn’t follow the rules, not Kramer.
He targeted ‘bad’ people, some of whom happened to be cops
@@sylviedevine5295 He kills a lot of random cops with booby traps, which makes his whole "I despise murderers" schtick even more baffling.
@@SniperDiplomat The only cops Jigsaw killed were Detective Sing from Saw 1 and a couple SWAT officiers from Saw 2. He never purposely targeted cops. As for the other cops like Detective Kerry, Officer Rigg and Detective Matthews, they were killed by Amanda and Hoffman.

Banks death was probably the most disturbing death in the movie. Getting the blood drained out of him for hours, "set free", and then reset into the trap as he begs for help until shot while his son has to watch. Other deaths were messed up but his was the worst

@@dream_killer-cc3vr glad you see it for how it is
Ehh as much as I watched James since Year 1DM, he def changed his motives/approach. I understand its his job, so paid promotions make sense, but how he's approached certain movies within the past half year has been lacklustered. Train to Busan really upset me because he really only cared about behind the scenes, he put crazy work into Zombie Land 2 and tried so hard to count kills, On Busan he just goes "I dont see them die on screen". It was a train filled with people, and 1 zombie, but then it becomes a full train of zombos....We all know they died. He built his channel off counting kills, everything amazing like bts and bloopers were always extra. I understand things change, but I definitely think a focus on "Kill Counts" should be the....Kill Count.
And let's all acknowledge the fact that he was still happier than he was did Thankskilling 3! He should never be that sad again.

It's up now.
I think the “Kramer didn’t target cops” line meant “Kramer didn’t solely target people *because* they were cops. Some of his victims just happened to be cops.” Completely different
Could have been worded differently though
Plus, wasn't the cop used as an example captured by Amanda and not John?
exactly!
Indeed
If anyone’s targeted cops, it was those working or worked for him.
Amanda targeted Eric Matthews for placing evidence that got her thrown in jail. She then placed Kerry in an unsolvable game that got her killed since she probably knew of this but didn’t say anything.
Mark Hoffman put Daniel Rigg through a test to teach him a lesson in procedural but he ended up failing, costing him and Eric’s life. Hoffman then killed Strahm after he was getting too close to unveiling his secret, then killed 3 FBI agents immediately after finding out, then set his sights on Matt Gibson for protecting Jill Tuck. After refusing to hand her over, Hoffman killed Gibson, whatever was left of Rigg’s SWAT team and Gibson’s entire unit.
Finally, Logan set his sights on Brad Halloran for a variety of reasons. He took bribes, planting evidence, let the worst criminals walk free (one of which who killed Logan’s wife) causing an array of aggravated crimes throughout the city.
If anyone didn’t seem to respect Jigsaw’s morals or ideals… Mark Hoffman seemed like a lost cause from the start.
How did we go from “new Jigsaw isn’t an engineer so tongue vice” to “huge marionette man with cool deployable shotgun and arm-raising action!”?
Reason being is cause these traps William devised suited the person in them. Least we have seen that with the puppet trap and finger trap, he has some ingenuity skills like what Jigsaw had. We might see more in the future.

Fun fact: the “Revenge” Kill Count is Dead Meat’s 300th Kill Count video.

Any movie with Chris Rock's voice, I just can't take the dialog seriously.
I actually have the same problem, though I think in time it could change. I felt the same way about Bob Odenkirk, for example.
It's tricky because Rock has such a distinct, unique voice, and for the first 30 years of my life he was just Chris Rock, the hilarious comedian. I still haven't seen this movie (don't know I will), but seeing him in _Fargo_ probably would help.
@@BobbySacamano I get that. But especially since Chris Rock did his own comedic improvisons, everytime I hear him talk I feel like it's just another comedic line, and I'm always waiting for the punch line.
@@TreJohnson03 yeah you're totally right. I actually didn't realize that, so it'd be so easy to just revert to seeing good ol' Chris Rock.
@@BobbySacamano Yea his voice is so distinct that I'll always think of Marty from Madagascar. Since when is a goofy zebra a cop?
@@TreJohnson03 I wouldn't even call his lines comedic, just plain bad.
Dang, Chris Rock slaps in this movie.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Boooooooo
You and your puns
@@yok3rsp8 I made a similar comment and nobody bothered to look at it. I guess I'm that invisible :P
I dont get the punchline
The most common theme throughout your Kill Counts, aside from the deaths, is the intrusion from the MPAA (now MPA). I would love to see a podcast with you and friends talking about the MPAA and the effect it has had on horror movies. Also, consider what would happen if movie theaters decided not to honor the rating system and just show movies regardless of rating. It could make a good discussion.
Terrifier 2 released unrated in theaters all over the USA and made 15 million so I would'nt be suprised if that becomes a standard
We need a Hostel kill count. I’ve been waiting far too long to see an Eli Roth kill count...

I think me hade a podcast on it
i love that the movie itself doesn't play the identity of william as the real twist, like, instead the music starts playing when will explains why he did it and that zeke's father was the main reason of how the corruption started in the police station.
When I watched it i didn't know William was jigsaw i got a bit surprised
@@j-zhirngaming9550 Seriously? It was pretty obvious lol

As daft as that "finger trap" before the numbers was, editing was fantastic.
*The final trap Chris Rock gets trapped in is being tied to a chair while Will Smith slowly walks up to him and then wallops the shit out of him with a huge SMACK!*
i rememberd who chris rock was and was just like yeah im gonna watch this video again

did he get slapped here tho ?
It was immediately obvious Schenk was behind everything when he tells Zeke that Zeke's dad is "the reason for all of this; he's why I wanna do this in the first place"
Honestly this didn't seem like a bad movie to me. It was good in its own way. Hopefully there's an unrated version released some time with all those scenes put back in or something like that
personally in my opinion if it were not part of the saw franchise (and didn't follow the concept entirely) i think it would have been a good standalone. might just be me though
@@_mariri that is if it was simply titled Spiral and minus the "Live or die" quote then yeah it most certainly in my eyes would've been a good indie film
Same, I went in knowing that most saw fans hated it, but I didn't mind it that much. Really my only complaint is Chris Rocks comedic attempts. They clash with the movies style
THANK YOU. I really enjoyed this movie, watched it for the third time yesterday.
Out of all the "to the numbers" gags, this is one of the best. It looks like its taken out off the saw franchise
Dear person watching this video in 2022,
You know why you’re here…
Whenever Chris Rock speaks i cant unhear Marty from madagascar which makes this movie so much funnier to me

A zebra detective, sounds nice
Same!!
It happens so many times with other actors like Clancy brown in detriot become human. I can still hear the mr krabs in a different characters 😂
I think of Osmosis Jones
Samuel L Jackson held all the humor of this movie on his back. Not really that surprised about that though
But, to be honest, I just wanted to hear to Mr. Jackson say "Game over, motherfucker!"
I didn't know this was a comedy? What made it funny?
@@jessicamarcantel7721 E
Good kills but can't take the movie that seriously when the protagonist is the human embodiment of a zebra
I know exactly which character you mean🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
and one of the characters is Nick Fury the Ultimate/Movie version.
The entire plot of the second SAW revolved a corrupt cop trying to save his son from Jigsaw who had him trapped in a house with people who went to jail after he set them up with planted evidence.
"Modern Kill Counts of the Saw movies would probably be like 40 minutes each." :D
"Let's not do that though, alright?" :(
“Modern Saw Kill Counts would be about 40 minutes. Let’s not do that though, alright?”
Leaving this here for a few years when we inevitably get a Saw Recount.
We prob won’t get a saw recount
Why would we get a Saw recount? Those videos still hold up fairly well today, unlike Friday the 13th. And also unlike Friday the 13th the Saw counts didn't start the channel so they aren't as special.
Jada, love you G.I Jane 2 can't way to see it.
god i missed james breaking down the behind the scenes of every kill. really makes you appreciate the work and effort put into these movies, and the work james puts looking up all this shit lol
"they don't wanna consider themselves a censorship board" - lmao, what? That is LITERALLY 100% of what they are! They do nothing BUT censor movies. I don't even understand why they are needed. If a movie is rated as only for adults, surely any amount of gore is fine.
The MPAA like the power and control of being a censorship board, but for legal reasons, they have to pretend they aren't a censorship board. Which they do by being bad at their jobs on purpose. Not very convincing, but you know, all you have to do is bribe the right people.
Las Vegas does something similar. For gambling to remain legal, they have to convince law makers that casino games are skill based and not just luck with the odds stack against the player. One hand bribes law makers to pretend they believe the lie, while the other hand kicks anyone out of the casino that uses legal skill based techniques like card counting.
Ironic, given the story in the movie.
Ironic.
The catch, though, is that an R rating isn't the highest one. NC-17 is a de facto ban, except for arthouse films, but technically it's just a warning.
I love how James reviews horror movies even IF he doesn’t like them or if they’re boring, he respects others opinions on the movie, talks about how the crew put so much time into it, goes into the Behind The Scenes of the movie he’s talking about, and he counts the kills for us as well, James is probably the nicest, funniest, and the best horror reviewer on UA-cam.
I personally do not like this movie, the kills are boring compared to the original Saw movies, and the deaths are far apart, I like Saw 3D, if we’re talking about kills, if we’re talking about favorite movie in general I’d say Saw 2.
Yeah it makes me appreciate the work put into the movies even if I'm not a fan of them
It's how he makes his money.
Even if he didn't like a movie, others would and if it's popular enough he would be leaving money on the table by not making a video
Truth! Though my favorites are 1 and 7 (3D) Saw II is a rare sequel, in that it is arguably better than the 1st. (Arguably! 😂) It's definitely just as good.
@@tvdvd8661 Although you can tell by his voice when he truly hates a movie.

I respect them more but still not a fan
sometimes a change in perspective can affect your opinion of a movie.
I actually loved Spiral. While the ending wasn’t particularly the best, the kills/traps were actually some of my favorites!
agreed, i just like to see at least one or two people survive otherwise it just feels like straight murder
Cool.
@@ButterscotchMcBean1995 ok

the twist wasnt too bad but chris rock couldve shut up with the non funny comedy Hell Samuel L Jackson in this was Epic so honestly i give it a 6.5 out of 10
I like the idea of a Saw spin-off series, but I'd prefer a series about an actual Cult Of Jigsaw. I can definitely see some people following Jigsaw's ideology if Saw were real life. But I hope Spiral continues. The Spiral movie was a let down for me, but it wasn't horrible and I like seeing fresh life being shot into my favorite franchise.
Not a great movie but i want to see them sequel.
During the original movies we basically saw the beginnings of such cult. Dr. Gordon would be perfect to be the current "leader" and keep spreading Jigsaw's word.

I couldn’t get into this one. Chris Rock trying so hard to play a serious detective role and no matter how hard he tried(He tried very very hard) I couldn’t take him seriously.
It was basicslly like Marty from Madagascar.
You are 100% right!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Mr Rock went full cringe
That's how I felt with Adam Sandler and Uncut Gems. I just couldn't take him seriously with all the comedy he has under his belt.
Its been a while since I've seen a CR movie but yeah him going from comedy to drama is going to be a transition
@Steele D Then why defend him?
Was Will Smith here to slap Chris rock but got scared of Sam Jackson? lol
I can't express how happy it made me to have you mention Chris Ramsey's involvement in this film. I watched a few of his own videos about the experience and it seemed like he and Darren really hit it off!
It wasn’t the worst movie ever, and I actually quite liked the traps. But Chris Rock was easily the worst part for me. I didn’t find the comedic bits very funny and he’s just not a good dramatic actor. Not saying the film would have been perfect with someone else in the role but I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more.
Chris Rock is cringe. He thinks he’s so funny and important, so his prideful, sneering bullshit try-too-hard ruins every joke. I expect him to demand applause after every line. Movie would have been way better with just about anyone else.
I agree Chris Rock is an actor with limited range he can only to light hearted and comedic movies I have never seen him do a completely serious role even in New Jack city his character looking was eccentric and comedic relief or attempted to be. I'm actually sad they allowed him in the movie since the whole plot is good and such I think a different person would be better idk who just someone else
L
Chris Rock actually is not a bad actor, but he ALWAYS get too carried away because of his comedic career. People said he was pretty good in Fargo S04
Rock's comedy is so thoroughly outdated boomer crap. "Woman bad" was almost the only joke he had the whole time. Didn't matter what the joke started to be about, it always circled back to woman bad. And it made no sense since it seemed no woman had ever wronged him - except for divorcing which is not 'wronging', it's trying to move on from something that's not working.
I’ll say this about Spiral: It’s the perfect gateway Saw film. A new generation will be introduced to Saw and this film basically tells them: “Okay, this is the gist of what you’ll be getting yourself into should you wish to explore this franchise further. Now go back and watch the ones that are actually good.”
I hope this is the case! Reinvigorating interest in the originals would be awesome!
Honestly I showed a girl who never really watched horror movies the first saw and she actually liked them and went to watch a few more
@@jeremyscungio16 That first film is absolutely timeless.

Not defending the corrupt cops, but I feel like the “sever your spinal cord or you’ll get a face of hot wax” trap should have been given to a cop who actually killed people, instead of just covering it up.
I suppose it's meant to be symbolic like the others. "Have a backbone" and stand up to the corruption.
@@simplygarbage9951 and the idea of the 'cover it up' cop is the one who gets literally covered up by tar
@@Siennarchist oooooh, that's good
Cover it up cops are the reason that murderer cops go free. They're literally not doing their only job: stopping bad guys.
I think the analogy they were going for was that she was "spineless" in just letting all the corruption happen while looking the other way.
But agreed, it's a bit excessive compared to some of the other characters' traps.
"Rest in peace, you sanctimonious bastard" I just love how James comically critizises questionable conducts.
