Yes (in the U.K) my wife’s previous (2015) Merc had a DVD facility to watch films whilst stationary, that went to pause and greyed out when the car moved. Okay but why now is it legal to have the same screen showing moving maps or other live information whilst you are driving and touch-screening ??🤔?

Could be done where it is legal to do EV convertions. But these cars are getting old and are not worth a lot. They are on the small side, and must work as practical estates after convertion. So battery placement would be difficult. Instead of the fuel tank and in engine bay? Hmmmm. @@sebastiaanwillem9196

My husband has a 2022 C40 as well, and that map display on the driver display is one of our favorite features, especially paired with a full map view on the center display to show alternative routes.

Worth noting regarding the busy display is that the EX30 will come with something called "Calm View" which will be a stripped-down screen that just shows the basics. According to Volvo you'll be able to switch between the view modes with a button on the steering wheel too so you should be able to easily switch back to the busy/map view when you need it.
Probably not as ideal as having a small gauge cluster or a HUD, but it should at least alleviate things a bit.

I’m with Autocar and their scathing report of this car with a 2 1/2 star review. Basically Volvo lost their focus on active safety after being taken over by the Chinese. I get it that the China market prefers unnecessary tech overload and screens not buttons but don’t impose it on the rest of the world….. If you watch the video where you’re stabbing at the screen you are having to constantly scan between the screen and the car, many other owners won’t and it’s as dangerous as a mobile phone. Having the fog light being 3 sub menus down is ridiculous. This car just has taken the fad of cost saving with no buttons to the extreme. I couldn’t live with that daft steering wheel. Rant over.

We have a driver display in our XC40's but we don't get widgets on the center screen. I don't get Volvo sometimes, it's like they don't drive their own cars. 2 displays with one being the big center display yet you cannot have 2 apps visible on it at the same time. I just want Maps and Spotify on the center display at the same time. If they can do it on the Polestar and EX30, why not frikin do it on the (X)C40/60 and please everyone.

The EX30 definetely gonna be popular considering the price / what you get ratio, while being an EV and from a popular top tier brand (i.e. not MG).
Probably especially for business lease, as you can keep the monthly payment fairly small and volvos have always been popular for business use (at least in the Netherlands).
Only downside is that basic stuff like 360 degree camera and electric adjustable seats are only included in the top "ULTRA" spec.

With all this talk of safety. Needing 2 touches (if the screen registers your initial touch) to adjust the temperature or to adjust wing mirrors is a step backwards and purely requires more eye time off the road.
Both my wifes car and my own have touchscreens and they're not great. Your fingerend has no anchor point with which to make a secure contact so you have to look just that bit longer at the screen. Made worse by manufacturers burying features 1 or 2 menus deep.
Part of the issue, is also that some things we dont use often enough so when we wish to switch something on or off, there is that struggle to remember which menu its under. All whilst bobbing along the road trying to drive safely.

While on the surface this is a nice car, they really have dropped the ball on the rear legroom and the length of the bonnet that could be more stubby to allow for more Jack in the back (or junk in the trunk). If you look at how a Kia Soul is packaged, that has the same boot size and much better rear leg room from a car that is 38mm shorter. Yes charging speed is slower as is 0-60, but you can pick up a decent 3 year old one for under £20K (and still have more warranty remaining than Volvo give you from new!) and that is with a 240-300+ mile 64kWh battery across the seasons and speeds its a much better all round package, and it has a dash display and a HUD in First Edition guise, come on Volvo, would it have killed you to include a HUD?

The other interesting thing about the Volvo EX30 is that it is ACTUALLY COMING TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. One of the annoying things about watching a European based UA-cam channel is that they cover a lot of promising EVs that don't have a snowball's chance in hell of coming to America. The fact that this will actually be coming here makes it interesting. Sorry to hear about the steering, I hope its a little better than the steering in my Dad's old Ford LTD station wagon.

Let's see what the price is. If it's Chinese, will it have the import duty? Belgian build, probably higher cost but no duty. If they built it in Volvo's USA plant, it would get Joe Biden's $7500 giveaway of taxpayers' money on the hood. They would destroy Tesla and Bolt.

Really interesting to hear all this commentary on the lack of gauge cluster. I drive a 2009 Citroen C4, go take a look at some interior shots. Smooth dash, no gauge cluster, before Tesla or any of the electrics.... and its AWESOME. You're not distracted by things in your eyeline, if you need to glance at the speed its in the center in a fairly similar spot (though admittedly a bit further forward) and it 'just works'. In fact I've been sorely disappointment that they reverted to the 'old fashioned' cluster in the newer models. Even the new 2024 eC3 with its minimal display doesnt quite achieve the same simplicity.

Disappointing that the fastest version does not at least have some improved dynamics and braking. I'd trade some of the convenience in this form factor for more exciting driving, so my eyes are now on what's next to market, like the new mini ev or maybe some other hot hatch coming in the next year or two max?

Looked forward to this review coming because like you I love the way this car looks and it’s the right size for us. Me I wouldn’t go for the bonkers performance modal. I would go for the top spec long range one 5.2 seconds is way fast enough for me. The only thing I wish it had for an extra £100 or so is a head up display giving you your speed and safety information other than that I do like the car and when I come to change my current car it will definitely be on my list of cars to try. Great review thanks.

    • @stevecade857
      @stevecade857 5 місяців тому

The bonkers performance is tied to how hard you press the peddle. The extra driving security comes from having all four wheels driven when required in poor conditions. At £2500 difference it's a no brainer really. HUD should of definitely been an option item. I can understand Volvo cutting the price by not including one but it should be an option for those willing to pay for it.

The ONLY time I've ever needed to test the acceleration of a car is when I'm joining a motorway from a service station exit. And that's pretty much straight-line stuff. I almost never need to chuck a car into corners at testing speeds (there was that one time I was escaping from the cops 😜) . So the idea of light steering and soft suspension is just fine with me. If the car can do 20 - 70 in seven or eight seconds, that'll do for those service station exits.

A fan of the EX30 design and offering but just BEWARE that the cheapest version does NOT have a HEAT PUMP so expect to have at least a 30% reduction of the range when running in colder climates, which is very poor considering the max range is 209 miles!!! So getting only around 140mile range for a £33k electric vehicle is shocking and no excuse and heat pumps should be standard on all EVs.

Other reviewers say 3.2 miles per kwh if you take it easy on the awd trim and 3.8 in the rwd trim for 100kmh hwy driving.
I called it last year saying this would do 180-200 miles real world range in awd spec and 220-230 in rwd trim for epa ranges.
