You nailed it. Apply the modifier after you are done with total mirroring. Then make difference changes. Thank you.

One trick I did to the original rabbit head we already started on. Because it was the left side we worked on, I cut it in half, used the mirror modifier on it. I then applied it and cut the new head in half again, this time preserving the right side. All that was needed in this case was to redo the mouth a little. :)
    Great tutorial anyhow, thanks.

I had trouble with this, so I'll share why so others don't make the same mistake: when applying the mirror modifier, make sure it's mirroring over the correct axis. I was trying to mirror over Y and didn't realize it until I watched that section of the video over 5 times and noticed the arrow color was different in the video. Great tutorial, BTW, BornCG!

Super helpful even in the newer version of blender. Worth mentioning that if you are extruding with the mirror display off it will ALSO create inner geometry. So its cool to turn off the mirror display but you shouldnt extrude with the display off.

Hi there, I found it annoying having to click at the bottom bar to select change the selection type (vertex, edge or face). I found out that you can use `Ctrl + Tab` instead. Working in Blender is now much more enjoyable. The videos are freakin' awesome by the way, it's like your actually here instructing me, while I play around with Blender, thanks!

Is a good explanation of the use of the mirror modifier.
I was a little disappointed you didn't use the rabbit head modeled in Tutorial #6. I don't know if in other videos you show how to cut a model in half then use the mirror modifier or not? I know sometimes when I have been trying to model something, one half looks a lot better than the other. I know I could mirror in the beginning of the project but that just seems really unnatural to me. This might not be good practice but, cutting the model in half and mirroring might solve some issues for folks if they add it later. I guess it all depends on what people elect or feel comfortable with doing.
Thanks again for the excellent tutorial series!
P.S. Actually, I have blogged your series earlier today to share with my readers since many are interested in learning Blender. Keep up the good work!

Love the tutorial and the mirror tool. However, I would prefer it if the side which was mirroring wasn't in white. It makes it hard to see what you are changing. But I have found that you can mirror when you want. So you can switch between editing the model as a whole with everything the same colour, or mirroring in places that you want copy over to the other side, such as when you are doing the ears. Otherwise it is an excellent tool for speeding up the modelling process. I'm sure after a lot of practice, the whitened side won't bother me anymore! :)

Great vid, but I have a problem : when I go into sculpt mode afther this video and turn on dyntopo, it gives me a warning that the mirrir will be rmoved until I go back to object mode. And indeed, now I can't sculpt my character with the mirror. And clipping doesn't work if dyntopo is turned on. How can I fix this?
(Dyntopo = the brush only creates vertecies (or whatever) at the place where you are brushing. So, dyntopo = less vertecies!!!)

Hi, thank you very much for your videos, I'm a newbie on blender and they are very helpful. Subscribed.
Now I'm going to be a little impertinent!
I learnt from another youtuber this trick to select hidden vertices with box select (B): change the display to wireframe (Z), and if you are in ortho view, when you select with B it selects everything in depth. This way you don't need to chase individual vertices behind. ¿Or you don't use this for some reason?

Something I dont understand is when I click out of ortho, when trying to make the cube round, the cube appears discombobulated. The entire thing looks terrible. There are faces that become concave with their center point in the right position. When i click back to ortho it looks fine. I've looked all over the internet but cant find a solution to this problem.

Hello, I am having a couple of issues here.
1-shift W does actually a Bend Angle for me, and not a mirroring.
2-after applying a mirror modifier to the half of my mesh (after having wiped half of the vertexes on the other side), the mirrored object does not apply directly opposite the current selection but randomly places itself around my 3d view port on various axis (I tried to solve this by selecting various axis or ctrl+A to rotate the item to the plane but nothing).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • @Theinvalidmusic

I don't know what the hell happened, but since upgrading to 2.78a, I just can't get mirroring or symmetry working like it is here. I can mirror the object, but when I revert back to edit mode, I'm just left with a complete mesh again. There is no 'virtual half' to speak of, and I'm essentially just left with the same mesh I started with, except symmetrical.

BornCG Hey! I know that I'm sending a message 3 and a half years after upload, but I got an idea for you, I'm currently really new to blender and the keybinds are very hard to memorize (at least for me), so what if you made something like a document with all of the keybinds and what they do, that would help out a lot for me and probably for others too ;) I hope you see this and I hope you'd consider doing this ;)

Does anyone have any idea why I can create a mirror but my vertices aren't tracking? I'm lined up, and it mirrors half of my project perfectly, but essentially I'm left with a model the same as before I added the mirror in that each vertices on the positive and negative axis move independently. Ive tried applying the mod with the "active data to display" button both on and off. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • @NateTDOM

Is there any way to make a 4 way mirror? Like along two axis' so you can make one corner of a character and it duplicate 3 times.

    • @BornCG
      @BornCG  6 років тому

Yes. delete all but one quarter of the mesh. Add the mirror modifier twice, but each time in a different, appropriate direction.. like first mirrored on the x axis, and then the z axis to make a complete 'virtual' mesh from just the original quarter. Then you'd just have to edit that 1/4 to change all 4/4.

how do I fix my mirror mesh. I forgot to cut the cylinder for my body before shaping. when I remember and split away the half of the faces then placed the modifier place the mirror object one the wrong side the body, their hip to hip. the body isn't at center I moved because also doing things out of order and worked on the character's clothes first not really out of order because I first making a character for animation this is another version of that character for being an avatar for Second Life 3d platform for adults. The clothing and the character was one person now making fit to SL as well I'm building the whole body so for Second life avatar can easily changes clothes like I like to do. The animation character will only have one outfit for now.

The operation section on the bottom of the tool shelf is only available IMMEDIATELY after you user a tool, and goes away if you even select another object or move, rotate or scale something. For instance if you add a cylinder to your scene that area will let you adjust the number of sides around the cylinder you just added, but only just after you add it.

Hi, trying to self teach myself to use blender. I have anxiety. What about circles and plans can you mirror those? I tried with the circle and the mirror doesn't work properly. I trying to do two tips at one for starting the mesh by the eyes, and trying circle. Though I just want to follow one old video that was time lapsed. By Danial Kreuter. He started from the eye but used something to free form edge around the eye reference. How is that done? I want to know by end of January. I want to record game plays to put on UA-cam. Want to play Fe. I also want an animation for the intro, I have blender and I keep hitting walls at shaping characters. I what to be time efficient for once so I want to finish making the animation in time for get to play with recording Fe. Then getting them both edited together and giving me some moral.

Options for the tool you just used are in a section at the bottom of the 'toolshelf' at the left of the 3D viewport. If you don't have the left toolshelf visible, put your mouse in the 3D view window and press T. Then try using inset faces in edit mode. Right after you use the inset faces, if you don't see the section at the bottom of the toolshelf, you will see a vert small '+' in a small dark tab at the bottom of the toolshelf. if you press this '+' it will expand the tool options area you're looking for.

You will need to press 'apply' in the mirror modifier settings under the wrench tab. This will make both halves real, but it also means you have to edit both sides separately.

could you offer any advice on whether to use blender or cinema 4d for a beginner? thanks these videos are great, I've just started on blender

+Dave Tarquin I'm definitely biased, but I'd definitely choose blender. There's a great blender community, and the learning curve is steep but fairly quick. The results in some of the newer animated shorts that use cycles in blender speak for themselves.

    Thanks for videos :)
I've a problem with numpad. When I press a number with Ctrl key, some short sounds playing loudly. Is there any option for off this thing.
For example someone yelling "developers!, developers!, developers!, developers!" :D

In blender 2.76, even though I have clipping checked when extruding, my object still has internal geometry. did something change with the updates?
