I think about the transition Elrond would go through in Valinor. He'd be reunited with most of his closest family members including his parents whom he hadn't seen since his youth but he'd go from one of the top 3 or 4 Eldar leaders in Middle-earth to rather a midlevel guy especially with many reembodied heroes from the First Age around.
Tolkien being a World War 1 veteran, I have no doubt he knew first hand that some wounds can never heal, especially those inflicted on the mind. Hell, Tolkien was actually one of the lucky ones in that regard.
Putting Celebrian in place of Galadriel would have made literally 100% more sense! Having a younger, brasher, independent and more headstrong elf-maiden who is a capable fighter or hunter (possibly from silvan marchwarden training) would work great with Elrond's political leadership, military tactics, lore-mastery and wisdom. This would have been a power couple! They seem very similar ages in the show, with Galadriel even seeming younger than Elrond at times, which would be true with Celebrian. Galadriel is thousands of years older than Elrond, and more experienced, wiser and powerful with magic. Combined with being tall, courageous and athletic, she doesn't need a weapon to win a battle, she is one! This could explain the absence of Celeborn better, having the lord and lady off in other locations and revealed at later dates.
My friend is adamant that it will be revealed that Galadriel is actually Celebrian masquerading as her mother and Elrond is in on it. I don't believe this theory but I can't deny it would be one heck of a plot twist.
Yup, huuuuge missed opportunity there. Could even have made her a warrior in place of how Galadriel is portrayed in the show to lessen the damage and complaints about Galadriel’s character.
@@Don9872 They could also portray her in her youth so that the foolishness and her character learning from those mistakes and trusting Sauron all made sense for her character and made for good character growth.
@@NerdoftheRings I sometimes wonder if the role wasn't originally written for Celebrian but some higher ups forced it to be tweaked for Galadriel. They probably thought it would make more money. Galadriel was probably a side character like the high king but they merged the roles to force Galadriel to be the main character.
For anyone who thinks Celebrian abandoned her family rather than live with her trauma, keep in mind she probably suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) due to her ordeal, something like that you don't get over and not many people can learn to live with it. I applaud Tolkien for not having Celebrian end her life like some other characters do and hopefully she found peace and healing in Valinor to one day be reunited with her Husband.
As a survivor of WW1 with its trench fighting and gas attacks, Tolkien probably saw several of his comrades dealing with PTSD. Like Celibrian, their bodies may have been healed, but their minds and spirits broken.
Also elves have their own perspective on separation. In the unused epilogue published in _Sauron Defeated_ Sam says this to Elanor when she wonders if Celeborn is sad after Galadriel went into the West: "I have learned that much from the Elves at any rate. They are not so troubled about time. And so I think Celeborn is still happy among his trees, in an Elvish way. His time hasn't come, and he isn't tired of his land yet. When he is tired he can go."
I actually like it better that way, i like how there is a certain healing in mental trauma in the world of LOTR. because mental illnesses in real world are incurable diseases, it might leave a long lasting bad effects upon your relationship with your loved ones. It’s better to stay away and heal rather than let it affect your love ones and stay consequently it might traumatize the people around you too.
I cannot even imagine what her eventual reunion with Elrond in Valinor must’ve been like for Celebrían. First overwhelming joy at seeing the love of her life again … and then the blow of him having to tell her that their daughter chose to become mortal.
Elrond: Hi Celebrian: Hi Elrond: What's new? Celebrian: Oh, you know, same old, same old? Elrond: Yep, well I have a tee time with my brother to get to. Check ya later.
I know everyone is laughing about the kiss now but I feel like it’s kind of a shame that Galadriel and Elrond will always be associated in that way now. Even taking it in a funny way, it’s so un-Tolkien to me that it’s quite a shame 😢 I get the laughter but it’s honestly sad
7:49 It is quite heavily implied in the Unfinished Tales that the brothers stayed in Middle Earth and became the spirits of the land like all elves that stayed. Potentially helping those that can see them.
As someone else pointed out, Celebrian disobeying Galadriel and teaming up with Elrond to protect Eregion because her dad's still in the city would've been an awesome storyline. Which also reminds me, 2 seasons into RoP and Galadriel makes no mention of Lake Evendim, the Elessar (even though Celebrimbor is right there), or Lorien. By focusing on Galadriel's disobedience in s1, the writers ignored her imperial ambitions (which partly influenced her decision to rule Lorien) while her character gets shafted, mocked, and held hostage throughout s2 (deservedly perhaps, but this kine of characterization is expected of Fëanor's children, not Finarfin's, who we know are smarter than the other Ñoldor). The writers fr just dug themselves into a hole trying to impress everyone and nobody at the same time. If Celebrian was a main character, then her death (assuming they adapt Third Age) would tug some massive heartstrings
Fantastic summary for such an overlooked character! 😁 But I think I disagree with how you summed up that wounds of the mind sometimes cannot be healed - I feel, rather, that through Celebrían’s story we’re shown that some mental wounds take skills greater than our own or that of our loved ones to heal; sometimes perhaps only divine healing (such as Celebrían would find across the sea) will do? 🩵

when I was a kid I always wondered what happened to Elrond's wife: it seemed strange to me that there was a Lord but not a Lady (unless you count Arwen) in Rivendell. my mom simply told me that while her body was injured (then healed) her mind never did so she had to leave in order to get better. it wasn't until I grew up that I was able to find out more background info. this video was great!
Unrelated but I like to think Elladan and Elrohir stayed in Middle Earth for good. There is a mention that the elves that linger would fade from the world to the point of being unseen spirits. I imagine their hate for orcs and the endless thirst for revenge had them fade to wraiths, existing as a feeling of righteous anger when they passed mortals.
That was well done. Celebrían is such an interesting figure. I have one minor criticism. You pronounced the vowels in “Evendim” as if it were an Elvish name. It is actually Common Speech rendered as English. Evendim rhymes with “leavin’ him.” The first element is archaic English meaning “evening.” The second element is Old English “dim” meaning “dim light, dusk, twilight.”
It literally takes no more than 8 minutes of this video to realise how much the Rings of Power has diverted the whole story and created a completely different thing than the original books. It is absurdly misrepresented and a mockery to Tolkien's lore. Thanks, NOTR for making these videos and telling exactly how things are originally in the books. That's why JRR Tolkien spent decades of his work to create this masterpiece, for someone to re tell his stories, not change it completely.
I always liked Elrond as a character dedicated, loyal , kind compassionate and strong-willed . Also i like how he is like " im going to get the confidence to tell that i love her " Almost 100 years later Elrond: i didn't expect that would work * him smiling like a loon probably * .
My current going theory is that we are NOT going to see Celebrian in the Rings of Power. Galadrial might end up back with Celeborn, but my guess is all the Elrond/Celebrian/Arwen story will be implied to happen behind the scenes after season 5 and the movies. I think by making "young" versions of these Elvish characters, they wrote themselves into the corner here and made it pretty much impossible for them to do children and marrying of each others children to make more children, because casual fans (movie fans, and even more casual than that) will be weirded it out by it all maybe even to the point of turning off the show. These characters as we see them look around early late 20s/early 30s, and we humans associate that with people either not having kids yet, or having young babies/toddlers. So to marry someone's child at the ages they look now, feels very "Twilight imprinting on Bella's kid" to casual fans... and well, ick. I feel like the only way for them to possibly do this in the show they've set up, is to do a significant time jump, to cast older actors in the roles for the final season(s), or to just imply that it happens off screen after the show and before the movies. I'll happily be proven wrong about all of this, but my current thinking is the execs who are normies themselves and are thinking about the normies, will not let the show to let Elrond (who looks 25) marry Galadriel (who looks 32)'s daughter who will also have to be looking 25, in an effort to not freak out said normies. Personally, I think all this just to imply a Galadriel/Sauron romance (even if its' only philosophical), was a poor creative decision, but well, this show tends to do make a lot of poor creative decisions - whether at the behest of the writers or the more likely answer, the amazon executives
So when Elrond kissed Galadriel, he was actually kissing his mother-in-law. This is from the Amazon production. It's not exactly Canon, but Peter Jacksons isn't either. It would take forever to include everything. Thanks, this was very informative.
I’m not sure if you’ve made a video on this topic before, it’s a bit of a heavier one but my idea would be how did Tolkien write trauma? I think it would be a very interesting
The sad thing about this whole business is that all those events exactly as they were accounted had enough political drama, generations of family drama and a blank slate for a brash and impulsive female role (Celebrian). Pretty sweet starting point for an interesting show. But somehow the showrunners decided to shuffle everything around instead of using the actual foundations. George Martin’s denouncing screenwriters trying to improve the original the material and snowballing their way into a convoluted mess resonates deeply.
Thanks for the analysis! I have a quick question: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How can I transfer them to Binance?
thanks for the clarification. I always thought that Celebrian withered and actually died. But if she went to the undying lands it means that Elrond reunited with her once he left Middle earth together with Galadriel and Gandalf. That is a comforting thought!
My headcanon is that one of Elladan/Elrohir chose mortality and the other the ship to valinor, echoing the split of their father and uncle 6000+ years earlier.
Perhaps if there were a compelling reason to do so. Elros was offered the kingship of Númenor and he might have already been in love with a human woman although her age relative to his is unclear. Elladan and Elrohir spent time with the Dúnedain rangers but it seems like Rivendell was always their home base so I don't if either would feel especially akin to men.
@@dlxmarks I’d imagine they spent a lot of time with the Dunedain especially after their mother was traumatised by orcs and there was plenty of time after the war of the ring, during the restoration of Arnor maybe, where one of them might have fallen in love with a Dunedain lady. I dunno I just like the echoing of the past type thing, it’s why my headcanon is that Gil Galad is Fingon’s son as Gil Galad fighting Sauron echoes his grandfather Fingolfin fighting Morgoth.
@@Don9872 Yes, I prefer Gil-galad as Fingon's son even though that makes Turgon's status as High King of the Noldor problematic. The idea that he is the son of Orodreth (and brother of Finduilas) who in turn is the son of Angrod makes the Finarfin family tree oddly unbalanced. I also prefer Orodreth as the son of Finarfin and the underperforming child compared to his more competent siblings. 😄
@@dlxmarks I figure the Noldor don’t have a strict law of succession for the high kingship so Turgon being the most senior of the house of Fingolfin (the feanorians were I guess ruled out at that point) and I assume Gil galad was quite young at the time so would have been looked over, at least for the time being. Poor Orodreth 😂 he made the worst mistake someone in the late first age can make… go along with Turin on his path of violence.
@@Don9872 That and earlier being entrusted by Finrod with holding the original Minas Tirith only to abandon it when Sauron came. I like to think of Orodreth as the Fredo Corleone of House Finarfin. 😆
Side note: if you COULD live forever and you basically stay looking the same as your prime 25-35 year old self for a large chunk of that time it would be weird that you look the same age as your daughter. Like Celebrion is the daughter of G but G and Elrond look to be the same age and eventually won’t Celebrion?
Maybe this stone is not just a jewelry. It's a powerful stone created by Manwe. It has a power to call/to summon The Eagles for help in critical time. Just a wild theory.
You pronounce "Evendim" as if it is a foreign word, but it's just English, meant to be a contraction "evening dim": Nenuial in Sindarin means "lake of twilight". Tolkien did this a lot -- "Englishizing" words -- to mimic how Westron speakers would do the same for elvish and other names foreign to the them. Compare with Brandywine (Branduin), Weathertop (Amon Sûl), etc.
I think the twins stayed in Middle Earth to be close to their sister, knowing that her time was short, in Elven terms, and wanting to be with her for as long as they could. After the death of Aragorn and her passing, they would have eventually made their way West.
02:08 "Celeborn would take part in the war in Eregion." Another wasted opportunity by the RoP people. Why they didn't allow Celeborn to exist (alive) is so strange. (Well, they wanted a love angle, so, maybe not so strange.) But Celeborn is such a mystery character to us -- almost a joke sometimes -- who is he, what did Galadriel see in him, etc. To have introduced him and gotten him onto the battlefield, we could have seen the character in a whole new light. Alas alack...
Of Elrond's twin sons, I prefer to think that their fate mirrors the fate of Elrond and his own brother, with one of them choosing to leave for Valinor and one choosing to stay in the human world with his sister. But maybe he dies before her, so she still ends alone. Maybe his soul then travels to Valinor while his sisters does not, making him the last soul to return and he is reunited with his brother. I like that story.

That's why JRR Tolkien spent decades of his work to create this masterpiece, for someone to re tell his stories, not change it completely.
Ninety one years between children? Impeccable family planning by those elves.
Lord Elrond is the ultimate playa of Middle-earth: Kisses the Lady Galadriel in one age only to be married to her daughter in the next 😭
🤣🤣🤣🤣💯
@@JurassicTheory excuse me for a second.... 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮.... I am better now.
And this is the world we now live in. ughhh lol.
You have to experience the original before moving onto the sequel, duh.
@@melkhiordarkfell4354 oh dear...
I always liked Elrond as a character dedicated, loyal , kind compassionate and strong-willed . Also i like how he is like " im going to get the confidence to tell that i love her "
Almost 100 years later Elrond: i didn't expect that would work * him smiling like a loon probably * .
In Rings of Power they digested Celebrian's story into Galadriels expereince in Season 2.
So when Elrond kissed Galadriel, he was actually kissing his mother-in-law. This is from the Amazon production. It's not exactly Canon, but Peter Jacksons isn't either. It would take forever to include everything. Thanks, this was very informative.
GIVE HER TO US AMAZON!!!
Interesting story of Celebrian, daughter of Galadriel and Celeborn and wife of Elrond.
Thank you man I had to shut off the tv and go to bed when I saw Elrond and Galadriel kiss
thanks for the clarification. I always thought that Celebrian withered and actually died. But if she went to the undying lands it means that Elrond reunited with her once he left Middle earth together with Galadriel and Gandalf. That is a comforting thought!
Thank you so much for making this masterful video 🙏🤍✨
My day always becomes better when Nerd of the rings uploads a new video
Side note: if you COULD live forever and you basically stay looking the same as your prime 25-35 year old self for a large chunk of that time it would be weird that you look the same age as your daughter. Like Celebrion is the daughter of G but G and Elrond look to be the same age and eventually won’t Celebrion?
Elves do get older and die. Only to be reborn again. So the body changes over time and they get a new one eventually.
It would of been so cool to see celeborn in the battle of eregion would been sick seeing him but no what's happening Amazon hahah
Maybe this stone is not just a jewelry. It's a powerful stone created by Manwe. It has a power to call/to summon The Eagles for help in critical time. Just a wild theory.
Could you please mention the seriously ethereal music playing in the background ?
Video on Celebrían? VIDEO ON CELEBRÍAN!!!!
A lot of people ask this, but what js the music at the end of the video? I can’t find it anywhere so I’m guessing it’s specially made for your videos?
I love how elf couples leave each other and be like “see you in 500 years” like it’s quite normal for them.
Is it possible to do a video on what if morgoth never created the dragons.
You beat me to it. I posted about the etymology and pronunciation of Evendim before I saw your post.
"Hey mom, remember that time my husband slipped you some tongue?" 😂
Where do you find all the maps that you use in your videos?
Beautiful and clean, it is a joy to lose oneself in the spirit of Tolkien's writing. A magical retelling as always.
Elrond and Galadriel have probably been playing Kissy Kissy for thousands of years.
Hold up... Are you trying to tell us that Elrond's wife isn't Galadriel? 🤔😜😉
🤯
The first ost sounds like Duncan's death theme from Dragon Age: Origins...
Elrond is a rockstar in rings of power
I think the twins stayed in Middle Earth to be close to their sister, knowing that her time was short, in Elven terms, and wanting to be with her for as long as they could. After the death of Aragorn and her passing, they would have eventually made their way West.
Just talking about the real story tugs at the heartstrings.
You promised a video on Huan the Hound 😅
Elrond: "She gets it from her mama."
rough that you felt the need for the parathentical explanation :D
This is 100 times more entertaining the RoP
