I was there! This was at the Hard Roxx in Lawton OK. I was on the front row, on far right. Guy with long light brown hair. I was there every weekend on the front row with my gallon of beer, and this was 1985, not '84. Darrell was "Diamond Darrell" back then, and he'd sit down and drink with us when he wasn't on stage. Super nice guy. Always friendly and willing to share his guitar playing techniques. I never dreamed he'd make it as big as he did, or I'd have gotten his autograph! Rest in peace, brother...
+JustAMetalHead It might as well be. Dime is well known for having been extremely friendly and open to everyone and to have sat down to drink with fans...
They should've started playing thrash as early as 1984. They seemed real good at it here. Imagine how different Pantera's run would've been if they had done so. But then again they may not have ever met Phil and our most iconic version of Pantera would've never happened.
"just like" HAHAHAH whatever man. He poured gasoline all over Hetfield and set his ass alight. LOLOL OMFG. He wasn't even fucking trying man. Oh that was so awesome.
Good Luck Holly lol nah he can throw them into the shit zone he’s right. Metallica is just as good as Lars trust me, they just play fast, and Lars isn’t even that bad of a drummer.
Saw pantera play this song regularly at joes in the late 80s . I feel lucky to have had that experience as a teen. Probly saw them 50 times for just 5 bucks.
Dime is on another level, I bought a C-200Randall half stack, the model he was promoting at that time, in the 90s, they sponsored him, I got to shake his hand and told him that I bought my half stack because of his amazing guitar wizardry!!! Dime and Vinnie, I truly shed tears for you guys, much love and respect in your honor…
I'm a vocalist, and mildly speaking, I've heard/seen a lot of raw live videos like this one. It's easy to seperate those who can sing and those who think they can, even though they can't. My point being is of course that Dimebag actually is a pretty good singer!
If I'm not mistaken, this wasn't recorded by at least 1986-89. Diamond Darrell makes a reference to their Power Metal song, PST 88 with "Pussy tight" and a guy in the audience is wearing a Metal Church shirt, and that band didn't start touring until 1985.
Mustaine asked him to join Megadeth before he got Friedman. Dime had one stipulation that Vinnie be the drummer, Dave had already hired Menza, and the rest is history..
this club was a mile from the front gates to Ft Sill. My band opened for Nuclear Assault there... can you imagine the marquee out front... tonight: Nuclear Assault.
We're talking Projects of the Jungle and I Am the Night days right? I saw them then and was also at the Arcadia Theater when Phil made his debut as the new vocalist--1987.
Wow I never knew Diamond Darrell ever did this James Hetfield impersonation. And he did a great job. It's interesting though that he tacked-on a coda solo that sounded just like EVH.
it's more like 86 or 87 than 84 I might be wrong but dime was the lead singer after terry blaze quit while they were looking for new singer at the time.
Dime had some real vocal chops...RIP to the baddest brothers that music has ever seen. I bet his ability to play this one made Dave Mustaine take notice...or pissed him off lol (shut up those Megadeth/Metallica motards that dislike either one and perpetuate the "whose better" argument. All you're doing is cutting yourself out of enjoying some really great stuff. Dave wrote 99% of the Kill em All LP anyway).

That's way cool man. He's actually way better at doing James Hetfields vocals than I'd have expected
+VyperVenom This is the interwebs so I feel like that isn't true.
awesome
+JustAMetalHead It might as well be. Dime is well known for having been extremely friendly and open to everyone and to have sat down to drink with fans...
+the emu (nauruankka) And the scene was very small back then. Not unusual at all for bands to socialize with audience before and after shows.
Darrell is playing Kirk AND James parts and fucking singing exactly like James. Incredible
Wtf. His voice is the same as Hetfield during the same time. It's mindblowing. Are you sure James wasn't backstage? lol
Well, like I pointed out in another comment. James just shouted over a lot of reverb so it's not that hard to sound like James in his early days
The reverb/delay effect is uncanny, love it

No James voice was crazier at those times
I never knew Dime was such a kickass metal vocalist, too cool!
Holy shit he sounds just like hetfield during his kill em all days
I know
"just like" HAHAHAH whatever man. He poured gasoline all over Hetfield and set his ass alight. LOLOL OMFG. He wasn't even fucking trying man. Oh that was so awesome.
Well, James just shouted over a lot of reverb so it's not that hard to sound like James in his early days😅
I think he sounds better. 🤷🏻♀️
He could've been the lead singer of Pantera
Who knew Dime could sing!?
There's also "whiplash" song that Dimebag sung... search later...
Yeah, have you heard P.S.T ’88
Try caged in rage
whiskey road
And do it very, VERY, well.
jesus christ.. this single man plays this better than an entire band.
Hey man don't lump the other members into Lars' shit zone.
Don't try to blame the rest of the band on the stage, bitch!
No. Hetfields right hand is in a class of it's own.
Good Luck Holly lol nah he can throw them into the shit zone he’s right. Metallica is just as good as Lars trust me, they just play fast, and Lars isn’t even that bad of a drummer.
Bullshit, they were an unstoppable force, and they were a unit.
Jesus, Vince was a drum machine even back then. Perfect timing!!!
Dime was an absolute force of nature
Saw pantera play this song regularly at joes in the late 80s . I feel lucky to have had that experience as a teen. Probly saw them 50 times for just 5 bucks.
Phuk Hoffman , Abb the owner had a voice recording to come see "The Great Pantera for five measly bucks!!!" Those were the daze......
Always loved this live cover. Dime pulls this off so well with just one guitar, and even delivers great vocals. Shit, man!
Dime is on another level, I bought a C-200Randall half stack, the model he was promoting at that time, in the 90s, they sponsored him, I got to shake his hand and told him that I bought my half stack because of his amazing guitar wizardry!!!
Dime and Vinnie, I truly shed tears for you guys, much love and respect in your honor…
fitting seeing how young dime sounds exactly like james hetfield like scarily similar
2:47 wtf
@A Taste Of Dick Brown lol
Who brought the chicken?
I have no words to explain how I'm still alive and Dime and Vinnie are gone. This was my youth and they are the best band ever.
Pantera the transition band between glam and thrash... Awesome!!!
Holy shit this band is amazing, love you Dimebag.
When Lars and Kirk have a bad day they’re made to watch this video on repeat in a padded room
Dime sounds just like Hetfield.....dude was just a perfectionist in everything he did.....even if he wasn't trying 2 be
Dime should've done more vocals after Phil joined
Phil's ego was probably why. lol
@@beatlesfantoo
Nah who has a ego in any band?
Haha
Why?
Eatme Douche because that shit pimp
born in 1966 hes 18 at this point already rock god
fuckin mind blowing!!!
He started the band at 15 in 1981. Unbelievable.
@@vapordreams983 Also dime and vinnie used there dads studio to mix and produce the first 4 albums themselves
And to think Dime was 17/18 at the time of this show. Dude was a virtuoso.
Is no one gonna talk ab vinnie pauls drumming on this my goodness 🔥
Dime was so great he could do the job of two guitarists and a singer, imagine if he had 4 arms.
He was Diamond Darrell then.
OMG love the echos on the seek and destroys
Wow! The golden age of metal. The just learned of diamond Darrell and I've been listening to painters since I was 13.
I'm a vocalist, and mildly speaking, I've heard/seen a lot of raw live videos like this one. It's easy to seperate those who can sing and those who think they can, even though they can't. My point being is of course that Dimebag actually is a pretty good singer!

3:34 that sounds a lot like the lick Dave used on the no life til leather version
Damn, Dimebag has some fucking pipes.
Dimebag slays this!!!
Imagine if Dime would’ve gotten the lead role in MetallicA!
He’d still be alive
Would be nice replace he before did replace my less favourite Metallica's band member!Rip Dime and Clif!(Metallica died with him)
Mustaine asked him to join Megadeth before he got Friedman. Dime had one stipulation that Vinnie be the drummer, Dave had already hired Menza, and the rest is history..
1984 they were still glam. A glam metal band covering a thrash metal band. Lol.
Never saw Slayer's cover of Mötley Crue?
Mathieu T WHAT NO WHAT IS IT
bro. They were a metal band period.
They were never glam bitch
They were just metal
Hell yeah!!! R.I.P Dime and Vin ❤️🙏
Can you imagine that Dime was singing? thats true he sounds like James hitfield. And he is the only one banging that guitar. Oh,man thats awesome.
The tempo is solid as fuck.
Darrell was 18 years old, very very fuckin cool!!!
Forever will love Dime🤘🏽
The guy was a legend from the very beginning. RIP the one who inspired me to pick up a guitar
This blows doors on any Metallica version.

Pantera kick ass man , amazing cover i love it !! Fck yeah 🍻 !!
Damn imagine if they had realized their true calling earlier than the 90’s
Wow sick vocals!
dime > james+kirk
That's an accurate statement.
Dude. Dimebag Darrell, James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett are basically equals, they're all Guitar Gods from the 80's.
Right Andrew. Fuck all these poser metal heads always talking shit about other metal bands.
James is almost on the same level as Dimebag imo. Both are unbeliveable musician and both have written some badass fucking riffs.
multiestonian
Not even close. Dime shits on basically everything James does.
Look at that hairball on stage...glorious!
Awesome performance!
One of a kind,Dimebag holy shit.
THANKS FOR THAT!!!!!
Dimebag sounds great singing this!!!🤘
Damn he nailed it.
I was in Lawton,Ok stationed at Fort Sill.
this club was a mile from the front gates to Ft Sill.

ROFL the "dat ass" moment at 2.50 XD Awesome piece of history anyway ! Love Dime's hair ^^
Wow never seen this sounds awsome.thank god for youtube
Awesome.
Van Halen style run at the end of the solo :)
Dimebag Kick F*cking ass on Vocals...\m/
So what's the big deal that they were a glam band? It was the times. Plus they were awesome even then. And, at the end of the day, it's still metal.
I wouldnt even describe there 80s stuff as glam. Dont know why people call it that. It's more just 80s metal they dont sound like Cinderella or poison
The true power.....of Pantera....covering....seek and destroy.....as a 3 piece band...and killing it ...to perfection...true masters of their craft..
i bet dime preffered the mustaine era of metallica
even though it was short lived that was still the best line up of mettalica
@Krytical Guitars "metallica"
AMEN
Even though he sings exactly like Justice era Hetfield...
MustallicA
Excelente!! 👏🏻👏🏻
The way I like this because I can here the bass drum make it more metal

Dime had some real vocal chops...RIP to the baddest brothers that music has ever seen.
