I’m pretty sure the not-full-habit outfit is worn by a novice, someone in nun training but who hasn’t taken her vows yet.
As a survivor of Catholic school, I can tell you that the young woman is wearing the clothes of a novice, not the full habit of someone who has taken vows; think of it as a nun in training.
The one doing her singing voice is the same actress that voices Ariel from the little mermaid
Actually just looked it up. The one doing her vocals is named Andrea Robinson. Never heard of her before.
@@andreadeamon6419close, but not quite; Jodi Benson is both the speqking and singing voice of Ariel. Andrea Robinson (who does the singing for Mary Robert) was the singing voice of Queen Athena in one of the direct to video sequals of the Little Mermaid.
They're both fabulous
Correct. If you watch The Sound Of Music (1963), Sister Maria wears a similar outfit compared to the other nuns because she's still a nun "in training."
If it's like monks, they spend a year as a novice.
They vow to live the life of a nun for one year. At the end of that year they are brought in to mother Superior and asked is there a prepared to take their lifelong vows.
When they take their lifelong vows they get the habit to wear.
My brother was a novice Benedictine monk. But at the end of the first year he decided it wasn't for him.
Sister act 2 is just as good as this one, a definite barrel of laughs
One of my favorites. I hope you watch part 2 as well.
Yes, I hope so too. He would love it! It's just as good with I think even better music!
@@Elizabethtarczy Absolutely!!
For another fun Whoopi Goldberg movie, I would suggest Jumpin Jack Flash. It's a gas gas gas 😂
Yes!!!!! It is highly underrated
I don't think there's more than a few reactions to that movie. One of her best.
100% agree with you! It's my fav comedy with Whoopi. I had it on VHS and watched so many times I could recite it from start to finish! I doubt I could now. It's been forever since I watched it.
I see what you did there
Scene with the song... 🤣
Mary Wickes, who played the first choir leader, was a wonderful character actress whose career lasted more than 50 years on screen! This and its sequel are her two last performances.
She played a nun in Trouble with Angels, one of my favorite films.
@@hayleyferguson3346 She was one of the gossiping biddies in "The Music Man", another of my favorites. "Chaucer!" "Rabelais!" "Baaaalzac!"
The model for Cruella DeVilles movements in 101 Dalmatians
Her last two movies were Little Women and Hunchback of Notre Dame.
She was fantastic as Aunt March in Little Women.
The sequel (Sister Act 2) is just as good if not better! I think you would love it!
I got to thank your older children for getting you on movies
The premise of this movie is just ridiculous, but Whoopie and the rest of the cast somehow make it delightful!!
I don’t think the premise is ridiculous at all. The sound of music was the same and churches have historically hidden people.

"Why Doesn't She Wear An Outfit Like That?"
Sister Mary Robert is a novitiate Nun.
Basically, she's a newly added member to the convent
Fun fact for you: Bette Midler, the lead actress in Hocus Pocus, was originally offered the role of Dolores in Sister Act but turned it down for her role in Hocus Pocus. Turned out to be a huge success for both actresses who got big success with these roles that both featured Kathy Najimy in a supporting role.
Also, Kathy Nijmy's line of " Come And Sing A Spell" when Whoopi goes into the choir rehearsal for first-time was a reference to her filming both this movie and "Hocus Pocus"
I think Bette turned down the role not for Hocus Pocus but For the Boys for which she won a Golden Globe but it was not nearly as financially successful as Sister Act. That is why there was ZERO chemistry between Whoopi and Harvey Keitel although she plays the comedy so well in the convent and has lots of chemistry with her cast.
Wow I never knew that !
One of my favorite movies starring Whoopie Goldberg is an oldie called "Jumping Jack Flash".
Jumping Jack Flash is awesome. I hope he watches it someday.
My understanding is that Sister Mary Roberts is wearing the outfit of a postulant which is someone who’s in the process of becoming a nun. Another fact about her is she’s the only actress to not sing as she’s dubbed over.
OK, I get that now. Thank you so much
Such a pleasant classic. The sequel lives up to this film, so I recommend it!
She gave the cheque to those nuns.
Corrina, Corrina is another great Whoopi film, one of my favorites. I'm more familiar with Sister Act 2, which is lots of fun as well.
110%
I pretend the sequel doesn't exist. It's such a classic example of a rushed Hollywood sequel to an unexpected hit. Doesn't have nearly the charm of the original.
Sister Mary Lazarus, the grumpy older nun who was the original choir director, was played by the legendary Mary Wickes. Her career spanned almost 60 years, usually playing wisecracking sidekicks. She was in the movie “Who Done It” with Abbott and Costello, “White Christmas” with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye, and was the live-action reference model for Cruella De Vil in the original animated “101 Dalmatians.” Her final film role was voicing one of the gargoyles in Disney’s “Hunchback of Notre Dame,” but her final on-screen role was in the 1994 version of “Little Women” starring Winona Ryder.
She's great in "Postcards From The Edge."
Loved the reaction! The nun who was dressed differently was not yet a full nun. She is a novitiate, or nun in training. When she takes her vows she will switch to wearing a full habit and look the same as the others. Her vocals are dubbed in by a different singer, but I still adore that actress and her role.
Definitely watch the sequel! It is different, but still very VERY good!
Maggie Smith Mother Superior also plays Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter movies.
Love her
Another favourite of mine, you’re on a roll! 😊 please watch the second one, it’s definitely worth the watch.
Loved your reaction so much! This movie is special to me because I watched it with our family when my Granny was still alive. I remember laughing and smiling so much alongside her. She was tickled pink all the way through, just like you in your reaction. Mahalo for letting us watch along with you!
You definitely will need to watch sister act 2 you will love it. And ask your question the sister Mary Roberts had not taken her full vows yet. I highly highly recommend you watch color purple Whoopi Goldberg's first film.
I'm catholic, the 'different clothed nun" is a novice, meaning she hasn't still taken her vows.
Her youngest age + difference in clothing should've been enough to figure it out. 🙄🤣🤣
Mother Superior (Maggie Smith) is also the Dowager Lady Grantham on Downton Abbey.
and Wendy in Hook with Robin Williams
Never seen it
@@AwesomeUSMovies I watched the entire series which is something I rarely do; Maggie Smith is extroidinary and steals the show. I wonder if anyone has reacted to Downton Abbey yet? You would enjoy it.
Yes please!! No one has reacted to Downton, and its sooo good!
It would be perfect for tour tv series channel.
This and "Ghost" are Whoopi's best movies.
Color Purple.
Made in America and Corina Corina are my favorite Whoopi movies.
Number 2 is so good
Omg there are some theater and film POWERHOUSES in this movie! It had to be fun to make. Glad you enjoyed
People don’t realize or give the credit to Whoopi for her catalog of movies, and especially her career as a Comedian. She really could be in the Top 15 of comedians.
Or her companies theft of intellectual property.
Oh my gosh, please watch the sequel! My grandmother loved this movie so much and me and my cousins love the sequel ❤
I clicked on this so fast!!! One of my favorites! 😂
"I now pronounce us ready to eat." Still use that prayer to this day. Thanks, James. Peace, all 💕
James - I have to say that this reaction is just what I needed after a long hard week. I adore this movie - and you made me giggle like crazy. The second Sister Act is also a MUST watch. If you want MORE feel good comedies please check out Nine Months, Father of the Bride 1 and 2, and Three Men and a Baby. ALL worth a watch. Cheers from Ontario, Canada! :)
Father of the Bride is definitely another favorite "heart-warming comedy" of mine!
I Love watching you enjoy a movie, I enjoyed this reaction.
I like how he claps at the end. His enthusiasm is infectious. 😊
Great reaction!! 😊 Sister Act 2 is even better. I highly recommend watching it!❤
Whoopie is really good in Jumpin’ Jack Flash!
This was one of my most listened to soundtracks that I have listened to date The second is from a great movie with Bett Midler called BEACHES.
And wouldn't you know, Whoopie's role was originally written for Bette.
I just love Bette's version of Under the Boardwalk. ❤
So fun! You’ve got to watch Tootsie and Arthur (the original) at some point! And Seems Like Old Times.
Definitely ARTHUR! Dudley Moore is so hilarious.
Please do the sequel to this! It is great 👍🏻
James, here are some other Whoopi Goldberg titles that you might enjoy.
- Soapdish (1991) - with Robert Downey Jr., Sally Field (Mama Gump), Kevin Kline (Dave from "Dave"), Carrie Fisher, and Kathy Najimy
- Boys on the Side (1995) - with Drew Barrymore and Matthew McConaughey
- Ghosts of Mississippi (1996) - also with Craig T. Nelson from Turner and Hooch, and Alec Baldwin from Hunt for Red October
- How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998)
- Girl, Interrupted (1999) - with Winona Ryder (from Stranger Things and Mr. Deeds)
- Rat Race (2001) - many names you'd hopefully know, and also one of my guilty pleasure movies
Absolutely all good movies
Soapdish is a criminally forgotten movie. It's wonderful on so many levels.
Love Soapdish!
"Mean Streets" from 1973 is a good one for Harvey Keitel. It was also one of Robert De Niro's earliest roles, and possibly his first ever role.
"That's a silencer!"
No, Sir. That's a supressor.
Suppressor is a more accurate description. But the first suppressor was pattend as a "silencer." So you are both correct.
Maggie Smith is brilliant. I loved her in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
She had all the best lines and sass in Downton Abbey
I’m really happy you,got to see this film! I watched this movie endlessly when it came out on VHS 😂 I still love the music and the fun moments it gives us! Mary Lazarus (Mary Wickes) is my favorite with her dry wit, and I love Mary Patrick (Kathy Najimy). Her positive attitude always made me just happy to see her on screen. Thanks again to your Patron for voting on this one!!
You definitely need to dee the sequel!
Part 2 please
Yay!! Another vid from James to get me to through until the end of the work day/week.
Thank you James 💛 ☺️👍
Hope you see the second part too? 🤩
Were they working on that VW Bug's engine in the front? 😆
😂😂😂
The piano player in the band I played in for years was the music director at St. Pauls. We rehearsed a few times in the church at night and the acoustics are amazing. Very fun watching your review.
The last couple of days I’ve gone back to old Whoopi movies.
The Associate
Made in America- with Ted Dansen, a young Nia Long and Will Smith.
Such a wonderful movie. From child to senior, it’s so entertaining.
One of the greatest actresses of all time is forever to be known as McGonagall 🐈...
I feel so old.
Some Like It Hot is an Oldie with John Lemmon (Grumpy Old Men), Tony Curtis, and the lovely Marilyn Monroe.
Connie and Carla is recent-ish with Nia Vardalos and Toni Collette (the Sixth Sense)
I mention these movies because, to me, they remind me of Sister act.
I really hope you watch the second one it's my favorite. It introduced me to Lauryn Hill @13 I remember wanting not only her voice, but her cool clothes too 😊
Due to these reaction videos, I started notice the generation has realized how much greater the movies were back compare to movies now
The one girl in a different habit is basically a Nun in training and hasn't taken her final vows yet. They get the full habit after their final vows.
I just knew you would bust a gut laughing at the meal prayer. 😂😂😂
"The Associate" - a really interesting, funny movie staring Whoopi Goldberg.
Not a well-known movie but definitely worth a watch.
One of my favorite movies! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. The second one is good too!
Sister Mary Robert is still a novitiate and won't get her full habit outfit like the rest of the order until she takes her final vows, etc. If you watch The Sound Of Music (1963), Sister Maria wears a similar outfit compared to the other nuns because she's still a nun in training.
Such a classic. I loved this as a kid
An absolute classic. The sequel, Sister Act 2, is good too and features Lauren Hill, who was a popular singer in the late 90s.
I think the younger nun with the amazing voice was a postulate, in other words, she was preparing to take her vows but had not taken her vows yet. Catholic convents are becoming much different, though, there’s a convent that is also a school not far from me where nuns aren’t required to wear habits at all, so it can be difficult to tell between different orders.
Made in America is another great Whoopi movie. I’d love to see you react to that.
this is one of my favorite, heartwarming movies. please watch Sister Act 2 next. it's just as good with incredible music. thanks for the reaction, James 😃
Great movie, so much fun! Watch Sister Act II....some say its better than the first. They are both great!
Been waiting for this! Hope you do the sequel, James!
As a lover of comedies and someone who went to catholic school this movie was a lotbof fun to watch and check out the sequel too because it is even better!
I've been having a rough time lately and I was so happy to see you watch this movie. My grandparents took me to see this when It came out. Just really want you to know watching this and cracking up 😂 just made my day feel a lot better ❤❤.
Sister Mary Robert was my favorite. I was sad when I found out it wasn't her singing.
The young nun with the great voice was still a novitiate (I believe that's the correct term. I'm not Catholic!). Like a nun-in-training. 😉👍 That's why she had the different outfit.
Still love this movie and the music! I agree with others - you should definitely watch Whoopi in *Jumping Jack Flash* !
I had Nuns, 1st 2nd 6-8th grade, my Grandmother loved seeing this movie….
I loved this soundtrack.. used to listen to it in my office
Haha, McGonagall! Yes, this character is probably one of the major reasons she got that role. If you are a fan of Maggie Smith you might also like to check out the British film, "Keeping Mum" which also includes Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean).
For a more dramatic and Oscar-worthy Whoopi performance, see "The Color Purple" (the 1985 version, not the 2023 musical)
Its one of those films e everyone should see once in their lives.
I do really love your reactions.
Great reaction 😂
I love this movie. It’s so fun
I grew up in the country and had access to 4 channels. One was PBS and showed classics on Saturday
Wendy Makkena was a bit of a crush for me, she played Sister Mary Roberts, but her voice in both movies is provided by Andrea Robinson.
"The piano's out of tune." Yeah, the piano is not the only thing out of tune around here. Love this film.
Sister Mary Robert is a novitiate, kind of an apprentice. She's still referred to as Sister.
The Young Nun is just a Novice, I.E. she has not yet taken her vows, that is why her habit looks different.
22:58 She's a Novice - she hasn't taken her final vows as a Nun yet. Becoming a nun is a multi step process. A novice is the last step, where she spends a year with others to make sure it's somethiing she really wants before taking her final vows and being accepted as a nun. There's a similar process for prospective priests.
This movie has such a good vibe going
Wendy Makkena who played Sister Mary Roberts wasn’t singing. Her voice was dubbed by Andrea Robinson. Watch Sister Act I: Back in the Habit and if you haven’t watch Sound of Music.
I love this movie. Always have. Please do the sequel!
Now you gotta watch the sequel a young Lauryn Hill!! Just as good a soundtrack for sure
And Mary Robert (the really good one) is what's known as a postulate or a nun who has not yet taken her final vows (much like Julie Andrews' Maria in Sound Of Music)
Pre TDS Whoopi. What a time to be alive.
Man!…You are FUN 😄👍✨ I’ve watched and enjoyed this classic several times but never enjoyed it as much as this time 🤗 Subbing right now and Thanks for the laughs 😄💕
I absolutely love watching you watch this.
Hello…. Oh , if you like Whoopi Goldberg, you must see her in the original,1986 THE COLOR PURPLE 💜 with OPRAH WINFREY… it’s a Must See!
Whoopi has been in a lot of movies, quite a few great ones like *The Color Purple* (1985). I personally do not recommend the movie where she's a cop and partners with a dinosaur. But she's my favorite, anyway. Her one woman Broadway stage show on HBO was amazing and my introduction to her.
Sister Act 2 is also great!
Just letting you know ether is a part 2.
Now you should watch Sister Act II. The music is wonderful.
I was going to say, but someone beat me to it:
The young nun is wearing different clothes because she is a novice; she is not yet a full nun who has taken her vows.
Please, oh, please. Oh, please. Will you watch Sister Act 2 Back in the Habit. It's both funny but also very, very good... And probably my favorite Whoopie Goldberg movie of all time.
Another great Whoppi movie is Jumpin Jack Flash.
If like this movie, I suggest the 1980 Blues Brothers. It’s has a nun in it and it’s part musical part action part comedy and part fantasy.
It’s a fun movie! Please watch the second one. It’s not life or death like the first, but it’s very funny. I’d say as funny as the first one.
Whoopie was pretty good in Burglar and jumpin jack flash.
