that last speech actually helped me cope with my mother and father's divorce when I was a little kid. Just because they don't love each other anymore, doesn't mean they don't love you.
That was actually on purpose. The original draft for this movie, as I've heard it, was for them to reconcile and get back together, like every other feel good family comedy of that era. But someone, and I don't know who offhand, suggested that they actually address the fact that not every marriage fixes itself, and that there are a LOT of divorced families out there. So they retooled the ending to make it a happy but separate ending, and specifically had Mrs. Doubtfire answer that question as a direct response to the various kids they KNEW would be from a divorced family, and watching that film. So your reaction was very much the intended goal for the creators. To help confused and scared kids, try and make sense of the upheaval of their homelife, and try and make it something not so scary, and more manageable. So it's nice to hear that it worked as intended. :)
@@happyninja42 it was Both Robin Williams and Sally Field who suggested that because both went through a divorce and thought the kids of divorce parents and Divorcees would like a positive portrayal and ending about divorce.

This was so popular back in the 90s. I have a funny story about this movie. You can't imagine how many of us 5th graders watched this. We once had a opera singer who tried to entertain us. But when he sang the opening of this..we all sang it and he got pissed off. LOL! You can't imagine how many of us knew Figaro.
The makeup chair montage: Robin was doing an older Jewish woman’s voice, so they started singing “Matchmaker” from “Fiddler on the Roof” a film made from the musical about a Jewish family living in a Jewish shtetl (village) in Imperial Russia. You should definitely see it. When he has a strawberry blonde wig and is singing “Life’s candy and the sun’s a ball of butter”, he is impersonating the great Barbara Streisand singing “Don’t Rain on my Parade” from her role in the film “Funny Girl”, which you should also definitely see!! You’d love it.
"I don't think I've ever seen her look this young in a movie." Ashleigh reacted to Sally Field in Smokey and the Bandit made 16 years earlier. Sally is forever adorable.
You should watch Robin Williams' interview on Inside the Actor's Studio. It's absolutely hysterical. He talks about being in full Mrs. Doubtfire makeup and going into adult stores in San Francisco and asking for the most ridiculous toys just to see the reactions of the clerks.
This movie helped me deal with my parent’s divorce a lot as a kid. It has a special place in my heart. Robin Willams is one of only two celebrities that passed that made me cry. The other being Mr. Rodger’s.
Robin Williams was so great in this movie, I have to watch it sparingly because I always knew growing up my dad would never try that hard to be in my life.
Same. My parents had recently divorced. This was the first film I saw where the parents did not get back together, yet it was okay. My sister and I definately related to the kids and the ending message was exactly what we needed to hear.
Watching Ashleigh completely miss the Fiddler on the Roof reference means "Fiddler on the Roof" ABSOLUTELY has to get added to the list. There's never any guarantee someone will love a movie, but in an uncertain world, I feel like Fiddler is a pretty good bet to hit ALL the Ashley emotional buttons.
Yes indeed. If you love Sally Fields you've got to watch the old episodes of "Gidget". She was a teen when doing that TV show. It's available for streaming on Tubi, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Prime and others.
Sally was Gidget!?! I once watched several hours worth of Gidget dubbed into Greek (it was on TV in Greece) and I had no idea it was Sally Fields! Probably because the Greek voice actress had a very different voice.
@@jareddemarzo8196 Part of is that for a whole generation or two, Robin felt like a dear member of the family. I've only cried over two celebrity deaths in my lifetime, his and Kevin Conroy's.
The way I know I'm grown is when I watched this as a kid, I thought the mom was such a buzzkill. But watching as a mom and someone whose been married for 20 years, I am team Miranda. Daniel becoming Mrs. Doubtfire just shows he had the capacity to be a supportive partner and dad all along and that he was taking Miranda for granted.
Yes to me the problem is that Robin William is so likeable, you see the plot of the movie in other light, is creepy as fuck, and you can see that horrible marriege from what it is
The only moment I was really upset with Miranda was the hour early part. It was a small thing compared to the disrespect he showed her though. The frustrating irony is that if he had adopted even a quarter of the responsibilities he did as Mrs. Doubtfire before she left him they probably could have been happily married. Instead he was creepy af. Still love the movie though.

Sally Field & Robin Williams were just... undeniable in this film. As a child, I never understood Miranda's hate for the birthday party... but as a 31-year old adult? I understand it. Williams was just MAGIC in this film. The way he dedicated himself to the roles he played... just outstanding. A talent lost too soon. Amazing reaction, Ashleigh! So happy you've watched this one!!!
I really feel sad for their son. When he delivered the line, “I never should’ve had a birthday.”, I feel like he blames himself for the party since he knew he was in trouble and he could’ve told Daniel “No, this isn’t right Dad. Mom said I’m in trouble.”. And I’ve known a lot of situations where kids feel like there to blame since they could’ve talked their parents out of doing something that they shouldn’t be doing. But in reality, the parents are the grown adults, and they should know better.
It broke my heart when we Robin Williams died because I never got to thank him for doing this movie. My parents had a very dysfunctional marriage. The fight scene in the beginning of the movie was what we lived at least two or three times a week. This film gave me a point of reference so that when the time came and they did finally divorce when I was 13, I wasn’t afraid of it. The world Is less fun without him. ♥️
I appreciate this movie so much more as an adult. They took a lot of risks by making Pierce NOT an asshole, and by not making Robin and Sally NOT get back together at the end. Howard Shore composed the movie. You may have heard one of his other movies, The Lord of the Rings.
I kind of wish more movies would do this more often, to be honest. I feel like most romantic/family comedies or dramas feel the need to throw in a villainess act or new boyfriend/girlfriend in order to prove that the main leads are meant for each other. But it should be noted how nowadays how getting divorce has been taken much more seriously today, but I feel like throwing a bit of realism really helps. Especially when one of the main leads keep saying, “No, my love don’t do this. We need each other. You need me.”, yeah don’t realize that what they’re causing isn’t what their partner needs. In Daniel’s case, it really shows that he needs Miranda and the kids more than they need him.
The youngest girl is Mara Wilson, who went on to star in the movie Matilda and who later came out as bi in 2017. Harvey Fierstein is a prominent gay actor who starred in "Torch Song Trilogy" and the Broadway show of "Hairspray". And Robin Williams is a man who dresses in drag. I always loved how they never made Sally's character a monster or the villain, just a normal woman who's marriage didn't work out. It reminds me of Liar Liar when they kinda swerved us with Jerry, how you're expecting Jerry to be more of an antagonist, but instead is just a friendly, normal guy... ...albeit a little magoo. ;)
I'm so glad Ashleigh pointed out that the final breakdown of the marriage happened on the son's birthday. I always felt the worst for him because of that. 😢

@@fredcasdensworld TF is that supposed to mean? he wasnt perfect by any means, but goddammit he was there for his kids 24/7, he didnt let his career interfere with that at all, which is why Sally Field's character felt like crap around him, because she was putting her career before everything.
@@UltimateGamerCC I definitely see your point. This movie reminds me of how much I HATE seeing good father's suffer or get taken granted. A good loving father should never have to be taken from his children. Especially when he children love him just the same. This whole entire movie, the kids are practically begging Miranda to let them be with their dad more often but she won't budge. She's hurting, of course she's hurting but she's letting her own pain blind her to her kids pain and they're the ones who are ultimately suffering.
My late wife & I used to great each other with the “high pitched Helooo” from this movie. Coming home, meeting up after work, after running errands. It was ours. That sound of that greeting makes my throat close up now.
Sally Field is incredible. Her performance here is subtle but underrated, and I think the proof of that is how she almost made you cry a couple of times just by delivering her lines. That's the gift of a talented actor who can make you feel everything with just a few words and a look.

I agree! I had to pause this video to confirm that Ashleigh has not already seen 'Dances with Wolves'. That needs to be rectified! I think she'd love it!
I think make-up makes the difference. In Steel Magnolia's she was playing the part of a much older child so she had to appear to be at least in her 40's.
In Smokey & the Bandit Sally Field was 16 yrs younger; in Steel Magnolias, 4 yrs younger. I remember her as Gidget & The Flying Nun in the 60s. She has one of those timeless girlish faces. Love it when you begin recognizing some of these references, like his Barbara Streisand imitation before he settled on Mrs. Doubtfire. This was a good movie for a time in America when financial strains were hurting a lot of families but honestly I can’t remember many times that wasn’t the case. Robin was acting out the shared stresses of a lot of people and injecting his humor to help people cope. That was his specialty. Great reaction Ashleigh.
OH MAN YOURE GOING TO CRYYYYY!!!!!! We saw this in theaters when it first came out when I was a child! The ending of this movie destroyed me emotionally. I actually wasn’t OK for a few weeks afterwards because I was so touched by Robin Williams performance. It was a very bittersweet ending and it just stayed with me all these years
I love the extended too, but Ashleigh doesn’t have the attention span for that. She’s already going to think the theatrical is slow in places. I’d rather she enjoy it more on less, if that makes sense.
I worked the night shift at a hospital, and we sometimes had to call one of the Doctors to clarify an order. Most of the time it was straight forward but every once in a while, we'd get one of the 'sillier' doctors. One of them would give us what we needed for orders and clarification, but he would do it while doing a Mrs. Doubtfire impression. 'Oh, so the little deary is hitting staff? Maybe some Ativan for the nice old lady. She'll be snoozing like a little kitten soon enough.'
I miss Robin Williams SO much. This is one of my favorites. Look how far he went to spend more time with his kids. He was so desperate to be with them.
Hi Ashleigh! Animator here! In the west and most english speaking and European countries, we do the voice recording for characters first and let the timing of the dialogue dictate how characters move when we animate them. In japan, however, the animation comes first to give the animation the time it needs to do whatever movements are needed and the voice actors add the dialogue afterwards. The japanese use a stopwatch to time how long dialogue for a scene takes and alot that time while animating. Then the voice actor has to match it. Both ways have their strengths and weaknesses and neither are considered "better" than the other. I'm unsure why in this movie Robin Williams is dubbing over a cartoon like this. But it could be it's supposed to be a foreign cartoon he is dubbing into english. (however the animation for this movie was done by American animator Chuck Jones who created Bugs Bunny. So who knows.) Maybe this part of the story made more sense in the original French movie this was based on.
“Mrs. Doubtful” was actually based on a British young adult book called “Madame Doubtfire” by Anne Fine. The French TV-movie adaptation was made in 2003, eight years after the English adaptation. As for the weird cartoon dubbing in the film, the filmmakers likely did it like this for pacing and to give Robin Williams a chance to flex his vocal chops. Showing him dubbing a cartoon the regular way would’ve likely been less cinematic and less funny.
Would you happen to know anyone that would love a great screenplay? I'm releasing book one of a 6-part double trilogy this fall... really think it should be a movie, and it would require animation to do it right. The screenplay is scheduled to be created by screenwriters at Fulton and submitted to their Hollywood studio for motion picture consideration, but they don't do animation. If you have any advice, I'm all ears!
Most likely they just wanted to show what Daniel does for a living and weren't concerned with realistically portraying the process. You know, just like EVERYTHING ELSE in movies that's the least bit obscure or technical. _shrug_

that last speech actually helped me cope with my mother and father's divorce when I was a little kid. Just because they don't love each other anymore, doesn't mean they don't love you.
I hope you had a good childhood regardless the divorce.
Me too
Absolutely. To this day it can bring tears to my eyes.
Look up the story of Robin going to great lengths to make sure the kids were properly cared for during filming. Man had a huge heart.
The actors that played the kids and Brosnan did a reunion, it´s on YT were among everything else they talk about how he treated the kids during the filming and how he kept in touch after.

The makeup chair montage:
Robin was doing an older Jewish woman’s voice, so they started singing “Matchmaker” from “Fiddler on the Roof” a film made from the musical about a Jewish family living in a Jewish shtetl (village) in Imperial Russia.
"I don't think I've ever seen her look this young in a movie."

Check her out as "Gidget" or "the flying nun"
Though she plays a T-total bitch here.

I said the same thing! 😂
Not to mention Steel Magnolias 4 years before this. Still say she was robbed at least an Oscar nom for that cemetery scene alone.

I've never felt so old as to hear someone say how young Sally was in Mrs. Doubtfire lol. I still remember her as Gidget and the Flying Nun.

Robin Williams was a master at his craft. I was devastated when news of his death broke
I never cried so hard for someone I never even met
Not sure I'll ever really get over that. It was such a sad end for someone who brought so much joy.
@@jareddemarzo8196 Part of is that for a whole generation or two, Robin felt like a dear member of the family. I've only cried over two celebrity deaths in my lifetime, his and Kevin Conroy's.
Yes me too. I’m still sad about it. Actually more sad for him bc he was such a joy to everyone and he was going through so much and no one knew 😓
Robin Williams, Jim Henson, John Lennon and Fred Rogers all had that effect on me.
Fun fact I learned reading Harvey Fierstein's memoir (he played Robin's brother in this), he ad-libbed the "Oh honey, I'm so happy!"
@@trinitybernhardt9944 I totally agree. She was an hour late dropping them off AND picking them up an hour early when his time with them was so limited. And she just barged right in. But that's the only time I think she's being unreasonable.

@@moonlit.michelle Exactly, Miranda wasn't a wife, she was a single mother of 4 her whole marriage.
Ashleigh's love for Pierce Brosnan is greatly foreshadowed.
I heard pierce is an ass in real life.
What did the cat want? Lol She was sweatin you like you owed her money. 😂😂

The youngest girl is Mara Wilson, who went on to star in the movie Matilda and who later came out as bi in 2017. I always loved how they never made Sally's character a monster or the villain, just a normal woman who's marriage didn't work out. It reminds me of Liar Liar when they kinda swerved us with Jerry, how you're expecting Jerry to be more of an antagonist, but instead is just a friendly, normal guy... ...albeit a little magoo. ;)

So who knows.)
Maybe this part of the story made more sense in the original French movie this was based on.
I assume they showed it this way so that we could see both the animation and Robin in the same shot.
