  • Making pinto beans in the Instant Pot is SUPER easy! You don't even have to soak the beans first. Yayyyyy! Want an Instant Pot?! Get one here: goo.gl/dG8Qg2 😘 (OPEN FOR FULL RECIPE)
    - INSTANT POT PINTO BEANS -
(makes ~ 3 cups of cooked beans)
    Ingredients
    - 1 1/2 c. dry pinto beans (amounts aren't super important here)
    - water (enough to cover the beans by at least 1 inch)
    Directions
    - Put the dry pinto beans and water into your Instant Pot and turn the valve on top to sealing.
    - Set the manual timer for 30 minutes, making sure that it's set on high pressure, and let the Instant Pot do its thing.
    - After the 30 minutes is up (you'll hear it beeping), let the pressure release for 10 minutes, and then release the rest of the steam yourself (using a towel to protect your hand from the hot steam).
    - Drain the beans and rinse them with cold water to stop the cooking process.
Use these delish pinto beans however you'd like! Think: burrito bowls, chili cheese dips, loaded nachos, etc.
    ENJOY!

Interesting! I've never seen anyone keep it. I think most people get pretty bad digestion issues when they don't rinse them after cooking. I'm not one of those people, but most of my clients have major issues when not rinsed.

You don't need either for good juice. If they are seasoned well in the beginning also if you add onion add it when you put the beans in.

The water thing- I'm finding a 4:1 ratio of water to beans by WEIGHT works reasonably well with sealed pressure cookers like instant pots. You can probably go lower, but I haven't tried it yet, not sure what the minimum (i.e. optimum) is, 3:1 maybe. The thing about pressure cookers is the precision and lack of evaporation. The idea of adding a certain height above the beans works better with open pans, with sealed pressure cookers there's an optimum ratio by weight.

Thanks Kristen for your video! I was looking for a simple and uncomplicated (short) video of how to cook pinto beans in my instant pot. As others have mentioned (not very graciously unfortunately), the “gravy”/sauce, pot liquor from the cooked beans adds a depth of flavor for adding back into the beans for making dishes like refried beans (which is what I did). For those that find this recipe to “boring” here’s a tip: just add whatever spices you like when you cook them 😉.

Kristen, I just got my instant pot for Christmas, so I'm still learning. I want to apologize for all the negativity. I'm a southern girl and have lived on beans and cornbread all my life! While I do agree with most of the comments regarding soaking, rinsing, etc., I've always done what most said. I love them with some other things thrown in too: Ham hock, ham, onions, salt, pepper, garlic, and sometimes a spoon of sugar! But you did a great job on the video. Thanks so much for sharing.

Great video! As for the liquid you tossed, you can do many things with it such as using it to make refried beans, using it in "beans-n-rice" recipes to moisten the rice (especially if the rice is day-old or older, the bean liquid will reconstitute the rice and add flavor and fiber) or use it to moisten the beans for bean dip recipes so you can cut down on fat from oil. There are many more applications as well so before you toss, consider the loss . . . .

I also pour out the liquid because it causes me to get gas really bad. I will add about a cup of fresh water and take about 1/2 cup of beans and puree or just put my electric wand and puree in the bowl a few seconds for instant gravy.
My wife prefers that method because its way less gas and I gotta please the missus.

What the hell is the matter with people? Depending on what you're using the beans for you HAVE to pour some or all the juice/gravy out. REPEAT: Depending on what you're using the beans for you have to pour out some or all of the water. Pinto beans are not always eaten watery. You can't eat watery tacos, tamales, pupusas, different kinds of salads.........list goes on. No bean is eaten one way people. Many different ways to use un-watery beans. *slaps forehead*. Geezus. EDIT: I've eaten these beans various ways my whole life. Both my aunt and brother-in-law are Mexican; from California and Vera Cruz.

Sheesh, KP! They came for your neck! You poured out that luscious "pot liquor" and, apparently, that was the start of the zombie apocalypse! From me, there's only constructive criticism from a food lover to a foodie, Love. Hindsight is 20/20 but the great "Rinse Defense" could have been avoided if during the video you had (a) explained that you were rinsing the beans so you could use them for different preparation (a cold salad or burrito, e.g.); (b) explained the DIGESTIVE BENEFITS of draining and rinsing the beans after cooking them; (c) better explained that you were showing a TECHNIQUE, not a recipe, so seasonings and recipes were off the table (pun intended). Not rinsing them beforehand? Clearly an innocent oversight or something that one can assume happened off-camera. NEVER rinsing cooked beans? Pshaw! While I would never roll that beautiful bean footage down the drain if I made a brothy, herby, meaty cauldron of beans from scratch, I ALWAYS rinsed CANNED BEANS because that viscous liquid in the can looks like someone washed a chalkboard and "flavored" it with sugar, salt, and glue. No one wants that.
Keep up the good work, KP. I've already checked out an additional 1/2-dozen of your videos.

Omg, good explaining the buttons on this instant Pot, but lady, that is some boring beans you just mad.
How about onion, garilc which is good for gas that you might get after. How about coconut oil salt a bit of thyme powder, now that will add flavor .why on god earth are you draining it. Pour that beans and liquid over some delicious rice and it’s awesome. The liquid is also good to put in a blender with the beans and blend , then after it’s mushy pour that over in a hot oil pan and it good retried bean for anytime. Kids love it great protein over a bread and lunch is done, they think it’s like a pizza.

Does anybody use the preprogrammed button? Draining the water? All the flavor and nutrients went down the drain!

I use the beans in burrito bowls so I like to drain mine. But for reals, drain your beans if you want to. You do you!!!

I can't believe how bent out of shape everyone is over not saving the liquid. I've never saved it. I guess I would if I needed it for a recipe, but typically I don't. And I always rinse them after I cook them also.

lol I was just showing people how to make super simple pinto beans - like the ones you would get out of the can and drain to use in burritos or whatever. But thanks for your input.

Yeah all that gassiness just totally depends on the person. So feel free to soak 'em if you get hella gas from beans.

It is recommended that you add some oil to prevent foam from clogging up the pressure valves. You cooked a fairly small amount so the foam may not have reached the top of the pot.

WHY are you throwing away the juice and rinsing the beans? Where did you learn this from? You’re throwing away the nutrients with the water.

Oh, I'm just showing people how to make super simple pinto beans. Like those you'd get in a can after you drained them. But you can totally do whatever you'd like to them, of course! 😋

You've gotta be joking. You dumped all the bean juice outta there, & then you rinsed them after you cooked it. To make things even worse, you didn't even add an ounce of seasoning. I'm glad you aren't cooking for me.
