Today I decided to attempt climbing the steepest paved road in Los Angeles on my 40mph ECells Five Star electric bike. But in order to even give it a shot I first needed to pass through the streets of Los Angeles and climb 700 feet of elevation before reaching the base of the steepest street in LA. It's called Eldred street, and it also happens to be the 3rd steepest street in America.
The E-Cells 5 Star Ebike is a beast of a bike, but can it summit the 33% grade?

How does this compare to a well-working Wired eBike like the Cruiser(prefer step through)/Freedom ? Hard time deciding which to buy?

I like E-Cells 5 Star because it is well built for Safety.
Going 40 MPH, you don’t want a bike that will fall apart with a weak warrantee.
Then why don’t they offer a thru axle fork? Why don’t they fully certify the bike to UL standards, not just the battery? Why do they not include 203 rear rotors as standard? Why does e cells have a F rating from the BBB? How does stay connected EV have 100k subscribers on only 700k views? No need to answer troll. Still looking forward to every new video you release, it's a real joy to watch! Thanks and please keep em coming!
I love that you love the 5 star so much you keep making more content with it. No one and done here. It's a great bike! Got just over a hundred miles on mine.
Exactly the confirmation bias video I needed while waiting for my Ecells Five Star to arrive today (hopefully).
Best of luck to you then because I ordered one and no one would ever return my message every time I called in the 2 weeks I was waiting from initial purchase wanting to upgrade so I finally talk to the office manager and she said she never got my message. I cancelled my order and customer service sucks! I immediately ordered a Wired Freedom (white) and was cheaper than Ecells Fire Star even after S&H and taxes plus it’s a better looking bike with updated computer. I guess Ecells didn’t want a disabled Veteran’s business, I’d go with Wired.
@gaboidawg When I called, I talked to Barbara to check stock. She told me the bikes I wanted were not in stock but on a truck soon to arrive. I placed my order, and 2 days later, I received a call to verify my shipping address. Three hours after that, I had my FedEx tracking number. I couldn't be more satisfied with my Ecells customer service experience.
Well like I said it didn’t happen for me after 2 weeks of waiting. I’m retired Navy and they didn’t seem like they wanted to give me a disabled Veteran discount or even want my business because I asked to cancel my order after waiting 2 weeks and they wasn’t trying to convince or keep my business so it is what it is but this Owner David Cleveland is running an aggressive UA-cam influencer advertising campaign but forgetting about some of his customers especially those who served like himself. My Wired freedom is $2438 out the door which is cheaper than E-Star with dual Star package ($2,800), more powerful, better colors (white) and new, better bike computer so it worked out for the best!
It’s a decent bike for the price.
@@gaboidawg i just ordered a black one dual battery makes it a beast
The E-Cells Five Star really needs a clutched derailleur to prevent all of that chain slap. The price point one the Five Star is really good, but to make if perform like a five star bike, the first thing I would do is upgrade the drivetrain, which would include a clutched derailleur. Nice review! Thank you.
I _almost_ ordered one. Wanting to add anything to it adds another 300 bucks plus whatever you add which was a bit of a turn off for me. it was 3k by the time I priced it out and I opted for something else. Plus, waiting three months for something I already paid for bugs me. Nice bike for sure, though.

That's how you kill motors. If you wanna climb, just get a mid drive - bbshd in a low gear would breeze through this while being more gentle on the battery.
Im sure he knows he’s just trying different bikes on different paths
@@Calleseprro I'm sure he does - this message was for people trying to find what to buy for themselves, I also don't think that 'impressive performance' is what should be said for this ebike's climbing ability and he should have said something for the people that watch this video for...what's in the title.
Im looking to get a torque sensor bike with good range. Know any options under 1700 damn
@@ShouldaWaved i think he had said the velotric discover 2 was a bang for the buck, i cant recall if it torque sensor
Yeah Im thinking a mid drive might be a better option for what I want (?)
Im not into go fast high torque as I prefer logging roads - real trails (within reason) cant/wont expect an ebike to go on trails like motor bikes [just yet]
the hill roads around here are pretty much a long climb of around 12 to 18% a little more than a mile long. :o
my thinking a hub drive will overheat on that, but maybe an AWD (?) 2 - 750 to 1k watt hubs(?)
Im probly dreaming they will do it.
After the long climb the road networks go for miles on even to slight 6% grades. thru the trees along ridge tops with great views [yeah Ive ridden them before, but not on a quiet ebike]
a 750 watt or better mid drive should do it better and not overheat as much (?)
how will a 500 watt mid drive do? I see more of these type lately, for near $2k
maybe add a front hub motor to help it?
Id like to see these mid drive bike more on yt vids.
they are not go fast machines, but they climb, which is more important for some of us.

Wired is an inferior product. The owner of Wired e-bikes only warrants his bikes for one year.
Your going 40 MPH next to auto traffic probably going faster, and it occurs to you that the owner of Wired, Stevie Goldman only warrants his Wired Freedom e-bike Frame for one year. Doesn’t that make you a little nervous???
E-Cell’s e-bike Frames have a Lifetime Warrantee.
Why does Stevie Goldman, also a lawyer. Only Warrantee his Freedom Frames for only one year???
Just finished assembling mine and waiting on the battery to charge for the first ride! Your videos made a big impact on decision to go e cells, thanks!
Nice ebike! Even with a little help I can't believe it made that climb without melting down. Thanks for the review!

I can smell those streets right through my screen. Can't believe I use to ride down there when I was a kid. Be careful, Mat.
I wonder if you will get the newer wired dual batter 45amp controller bike? Can try that one up the hill too.
I don’t think Stevie Goldman, owner of Wired e-bikes, will send Matt another bike. Wired Freedom looked really Bad on Matt’s First Test. Controller overheated and wires became disconnected shutting down the Wired freedom on several occasions.

I just found out from the owner of Ecells that Hentach (Five Star motor manufacturer) says not to exceed 230°F motor temp. It bet you're exceeding that temp with the hill climb.
Used to run that street with high school track team late 80's, haven't seen that street since then, It's changed alot. Too expensive to get that bike shipped to Alaska.

Is there any difference between the E-Cells Five Star vs the Wireless Freedom E-bike? The Wireless Freedom is $2000 with dual battery. The E-Cells is $2000 with one battery. An extra battery is $500 for the battery and $300 for the tariff fee. So the better bargain seems to be the Wireless Freedom. Am I missing something here?
Yeah the difference is the wired is a cloned piece of junk with a tiny plastic controller. Frame rattles and isn’t stable.
Yes you are. If you live in Calif. Wired will cost you another $500 for shipping, tax, and insurance.
Today Wired hasn't had to adjust to tariff pricing yet and with the newest version of thier bike is probably the best value deal, 2000+250shipping+ if you live somewhere not Montana apparently you have some other taxes to pay LOLOL . The FiveStar has a slightly better rear suspension geometry design and if you get the dual batteries it also gets a much better front suspension fork and also has more optional bolt locations for a removable front basket and water bottle holders and different tire options if you want something specific rubber wise. They're 90% the same you'd be happy with either one and the five Star fully optioned ignoring money is the slightly better built bike. Unless all you care about is very peak power, new wired bikes have a more powerful motor speed controller (their old one was way worse and haven't actually delivered any of the new ones to customers yet though. New ones are getting shipped now)
@@SarahJane-y1p Americans apparently aren't taxed enough and thus more tariffs need to be placed.

I doubt any bag is meant to carry a battery. Adding foam at the bottom of the bag might prevent tearing the fabric but the weight is likely too much for the thread used to hold the bag together.

Impressive climbs, but the trips there and back sure were sketchy! I tried Tannus Armour and got more flats than I did without. Seems on small fat tires like 20 inchers, the friction eats up the inner tube and I wound up with a handful of shredded rubber. 6 flats with Tannus Armour, 3 of them in one day, and I said forget it. Took them out and never looked back. It's interesting that a bike that large gets questionable at 35mph. I ride a RadMini folding bike, and it's stable at 40mph.

Anyone know where to buy a 60V aftermarket battery? Hate to be tied in to buying them from Ecells or Wired. Also, it looks like that 2nd battery that goes in the rear rack is also proprietary on both brands of bikes. Thats what I have been wondering if the new dual star bike with two batteries will be a better hill climber due to more amp hours but with increased weight.

Wired’s new 2024 V2 Freedom … feature wise the superior choice.
If you want slightly better top speed, maybe. If you want better handling/suspension five star is better. Both are 90% the same in most scenarios.
