I love how LOTS of artist start off by making bangers and radio/festival ready music but when they become financially secure they start making what they truly love, and its always funky sexy smooth music.
But Calvin went full circle, he started with music like this. I guess the trend is not just festival vs chill, but the fact that at around 2011 the sound of Bigroom House came around the corner and people (especially those who were only just feeling attracted by that style) wouldn't be impressed unless a piece of electronic had a massive drop. So that influenced even the electro-prog house genre and some trance stuff too, it was the signature of the sound of then (which is also why under every single EDM track of the time you'll find comments saying they wished that bigroom or 'the old artist x' came back with that specific sound). Now producers feel ok to make a chill tune too. Which is good, diversity is good for everyone. I'm kinda saying that it's not just the money-argument, 'cause Calvin has been the highest paid DJ since about 2012. After that year he never had to really worry anyway.
I saw his summer playlist, and he included great old-school soul and r&b, and my favorite songs from Sly and the Family Stone (If You Want Me To Stay), Prince (I Wanna Be Your Lover) and a 1972 hit from the Dramatics, which is one of my favorite soul songs of all time. I knew there was a reason his music spoke to me.
@@justinusjulius5007 I feel he doesn't get the appreciation from critics he deserves. His peers respect him and he can get virtually an artist to work with him, but he's still weirdly underrated. I love his deep love for soul music and how he's trying to do his own version of it.
Isn't it crazy the Calvin goes all in with analog insttuments and Skrillex goes crazy with digital oscillators and distortions and both are epic legends in producing.....
@@ProdIMMORTAL agreed. it’s all preference considering they both have money to blow. It’s also proof that there’s countless ways to create a unique amazing sound
I think the difference is skrillex makes or used to make most of his music on the road, on his laptop and then mix it in the box but in his studio. Also the sound he got known for isnt really achievable with analog synths unless you process them like hell in the box, which then loses the point of having them coming from an analog synth imo :)
Gotta say I miss his old style of music, but feel like this allows him to truly unfold his musical genius. Regardless, this is amazing in its own right
Not a big fan of his new stuff but he is and had always been an incredible producer, perfect mix between "classic", analog and numeric instruments, and mixing with artists from any kind of music 🔥 I miss so much the atmosphere from 18months and Motion, it was another time 😊
@RodriVlogs Actually didn't know they weren't critically aclaimed. I personally absolutely love both albums, but that's of course very subjective lol. Have to agree that his releases from Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 and forward, has given us a better idea of just how good he is and how much he can actually do. This is something I think his old style of music didn't allow him to do/explore so I'm very happy that he gets to do that now. And the guy really seems to enjoy as well which is just as important! Just hope we get to have som new "old stuff" in the future haha
@@fostinmusic Same dude! Those albums just were on aother level! Just like you I'm not the biggest fan of his newer stuff from a listening perspective. Just hope we will get some of those old vibes in the future!
He was using logic Pro X bro but only to track the instruments. He also would have used a mix of hardware and plugins to mix it. In the 80s they used a tape machine to track.
Calvin is an absolute music genius. Produced the song like it was the 80’s. His production has always been great, and him collaborating with The Weeknd was a great move
The textures and layers. People don't realize how much creativity goes into these productions. One if my favorite producers is Nile Rodgers and I'm always amazed at all the instrumentation- where each individual part is laid down one at a time to make a sonic creation. That's what he's doing here.
Creativity is a funny thing sometimes. I find that some days when creating music, the music just kinda speaks to me and tells me what to do with it, but at other times it can be difficult, but you just have to keep creating and not sit around waiting for inspiration
@Martijn Garrix But learning by online tutorials doesn't make you unique. Take maxmartin (the goat) for example, his production style is too unconventional to be taught in UA-cam videos. People who make the same sounding shit will never get anywhere. All the top pop producers are crazy unconventional and unique.
