Tame Impala: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Bobby Carter | August 24, 2020
With beats, effects and synths pumping through a DJ mixer sitting on a school desk in his home studio in Australia, we present Tame Impala like you've never heard it before. As much as I love Tame Impala's music, I'm probably more intrigued by the creative process that brings the songs to life. The studio version of the band is pretty simple on paper: All songs are written, produced and performed by Kevin Parker. For the live version, Parker is still front and center but surrounded by a host of musicians who interpret his recorded work almost to a tee.
So it came as a shock to me when the Australian maestro explained what he wanted to do for his Tiny Desk (home) concert or his "Tame Impala Soundsystem" as he puts it. "I'll get Jay (Watson) and Dom (Simper) and we'll do this kind of electronic jam with heaps of equipment around us and we'll recreate the songs with samplers and sequencers," Parker says. "I've wanted to do something like this for a while and thought Tiny Desk would be the opportunity to do it."

Tame Impala is that kind of band that helps you to reach self-forgiveness and gives you good vibes about the future.

something we all need desperately right now
Tame Impala is not a band. Tame Impala is just a musical proyect by Kevin Parker, literally Kevin Parker is Tame Impala .
Yeah no sh!t.

For those of you interested, the two other guys performing in this just released their own respective solo albums. GUM (Jay Watson) recently released "Out in the World" and bambi (Dominic Simper) recently released "unfolding". Only Kevin Parker could mix house music, yacht rock, and psychedelic disco and make it sound incredible
I’m so happy someone hears Yacht Rock in Kev’s stuff, the single versions of Patience and Borderline sounded exactly like a couple of ‘79 Christopher Cross tracks from a parallel universe with Kevin on vocals.
Uhh that’s a pretty incredible combo
Yea
I’ve been hearing that term a lot lately, is yacht rock also known as surfer music? Just wondering
It’s another weird term people have been using for a while to describe soft rock/vintage pop from the mid/late 70’s to early 80’s, artists like Steely Dan, Toto, Christopher Cross, Doobie Brothers, Michael McDonald, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, etc.
It's always funny hearing a singer's normal speaking voice and how ridiculously different it is to their singing voice.

it’s so crazy to see how developed tame impala’s music has become. the sound changed so much but i love it
Folks should show more respect and understanding for the roles played by Jay Watson and Dominic Simper who have literally played in every live concert and on every record since the inception of Tame Impala and they are very close buddies. Hugely multi-talented guys in their own rights. Sure, Kevin wrote/writes the songs/music but their part in it should not to be downplayed the way it constantly/annoyingly is. The way these versions were put together and so effortlessly played by these 3 was a revelation.
They've played on every record? I thought the personnel for each record was ridiculously small. In fact, there being no other instrumentalist except Kevin across the entireties of Currents and The Slow Rush is probably one of the reasons why I don't like those albums as much as his first two.
@@ChronoStar on the original EP, Jay Watson played drums on 'Wander' (one of the best early TI songs btw), 'Forty-One Mosquitos Flying in Formation'. He also played drums on 'Solitude is Bliss', 'The Bold Arrow of Time', 'Island Walking', from Innerspeaker. Jay also did the keyboards for 'Elephant' and most famously 'Apocalypse Dreams'. So while not every record, Jay has made tremendous contributions to Tame Imapla. As far as I know Dom hasn't made any contributions to any studio albums, aside from potentially Kevin foresee the arrangement for Innerspeaker, after watching them jam tracks on the Innerspeaker tapes.
@@ChronoStar Jay plays drums on Solitude is Bliss off of Innerspeaker and wrote the outro to Bold Arrow of Time. I’m not sure if the outro is on streaming services as it seems to only be included sometimes, but they have been playing it live after RHCC lately. Jay also played keys on Apocalypse Dreams and Elephant IIRC. It’s a pretty common misconception that Kevin did everything on all the albums. He did mostly everything on the first two records outside of a few parts. He did not mix the first two albums at all and I see this one quite often. Dave Fridmann is the mastermind behind the Innerspeaker/Lonerism mixes. Kevin didn’t start doing everything until Currents/TSR.
