I've been on benzos daily for over 10 years, mostly Valium, and yes, it was all prescribed, and my current doctors are trying to undo years of damage. I've been tapering off since last year, and it's not over yet. I've always had memory issues, but never as bad as they are now, and I'm not even 30 yet. So glad to see more awareness for this issue being spread out there, it NEEDS to be said.

Wow! Those are high doses for Xanax and Valium. It’s good to hear you are down as low as you are. From everything I’ve learned you should taper 10% for at least a week-10 days, or longer. Try going to 9mgs Diazepam for at least a week. I’m definitely not a doctor! I’m researching this topic because I’m going into detox and treatment. I’m scared! I was on benzos since 96. I began tapering super slowly in 2013. I've been off 5 years and it has not gotten better. It took 4 and a half years to taper off Klonopin 6mg. I was a registered nurse. I can't work in that field because my memory is shot. I feel like I have early onset dementia or Alzheimer's. I really want compensation for the crap I going through. I weaned slowly on MY OWN and still suffered withdrawal for 2 years after. So my experience says yes they do cause cognitive decline. My memory was great while I was on them. Not now. I am not a Dr but my experience trump's any Drs objective findings. And I know MANY more who are in the same boat.

    • @poisonfortheweak
      @poisonfortheweak 2 роки тому +5

Same here. Was on 6mg of Klonopin a day. Was physically dependent on it as I realized in the few horrific times where my prescription didn’t go through or some other holdup. One time I moved to a different state and I couldn’t get a refill since my doctor wouldn’t do it since I was out of state. I went into acute withdrawal and that was literally the worst experience of my life.
I ended up in the hospital after having seizures and hearing voices for a week. I couldn’t sleep at all during that time and I would literally almost jump out of my skin if someone even touched me or startled me.
Thank God I was able to get off of it using a long slow taper with Valium (I actually suggested this protocol since I knew way more than my doctors about benzo withdrawal.)
To this day, almost 10 years later, I still struggle with even being able to have enough mental sharpness or clarity to even think straight. I feel like I’m in a constant fog where I’m just existing like a robot or avatar. I have very low quality of life now- so you’re not alone. It’s a daily struggle to find something- a supplement, this or that which can make me feel like a normal person again. Still haven’t found it.

If your not diabetic this sounds like a diet and exorcise eating disorder. Keep that in mind. You might need all that extra because your meds aren’t working. Especially the Effexor. That was so hard to get off. I had to open the capsule and take a tiny sphere or two out a day for weeks. It was awful.
Your on some very hard medications so be careful and remember fake sugar is still sugar it’s just not used by our bodies and can cause other issues with in it. Ann reardon does a great video on it.

My mother began taking benzodiazepines in 1993 and still takes them daily. At one point she was taking two different prescriptions at the same time.
Her cognitive decline has been noticeable and over the last 10 years she’s no longer the same person. After reading several studies including one from Harvard School of Medicine I spoke with my parents about this problem repeatedly and also her prescribing psychiatrists. Her psychiatrist acknowledged the danger and risk of cognitive decline But the only thing that changed was a recent lowering in dosage and the elimination of one of the prescriptions.
This was preventable and yes the decades of benzodiazepines were the cause.

Yep the sad thing about some antidepressants is some of them you can't stop abruptly. And I do believe some antidepressants are worse than others...one snri..
Effexor you cannot stop abruptly. And I remember my mom getting worse around 2015 2016 and she's been on this drug since I think I think since 2001 or 2002. That's long-term use and I remember having to go to work in 2016 and told my mom this truck makes you lose weight and that's a side effect and my mom was losing significant amount of weight and I thought it was a side effect from the drug. And I told my mom take these 5 days a week in 2 weeks we're going to drop down to 4 days a week and another two weeks we're going to drop down to 3 days and then 2 days and then one week every two weeks we're going to take one pill off. I had to go to work. And I remember coming home asking my mom in March of 2016 did you take your pill today and she'd say I don't know I don't remember. The next day the same thing I don't know I don't remember. Looking back I could have gave my mom the pill at 6:00 a.m. in the morning before I left for work. I could have took the pill bottle away from her to make sure she doesn't take anymore. But I didn't do that. I left the pill bottle there because I thought she would remember. Within a month I saw horrible decline in my mother because I don't think she was taking any of her snri medication. I think she just forgot every day. It was so stressful because I lived with her and I had to go to work those 3 days a week. I didn't have anybody there to help me watch my mom all day long. Then all the doctors started playing doctor and changed her medicine and gave her this and gave her that and gave her an anti Parkinson's drug and that made her have head seizures it was horrible what those doctors and those drugs did to her. Always have somebody with your loved one if you can't be there with them especially if you think they're not remembering to take the medication because a lot of them you cannot stop abruptly

It's super addictive and really messes up the brain chemistry Gabba receptors production after stopping the brain can't produce its own slowly comes back but I bleave never to normal especially if one has taken a longer time. How it affects other parts of the brain they don't even know, the brain is far to complex. Big pharma makes billions off benzos they will never take them off the market. They are one of the most prescribed meds in North America. Kids are even on them. Like predue pharma and oxy contin they are legal mafia and crooks all about profits and greed at the expense of innocent people just destroying people's lifes

This happened to me. I took them for seizures. I stopped Ativan and went into a total psychotic episode and completely lost my memory for 4 months. I "woke up" out of it IN JAIL! I somehow ordered groceries online and I thought the girl that delivered them was my daughter! I didn't want her to leave so, she thought I was kidnapping her and called the police. I should have been taken to the E.R. but, I was taken to jail because a cop told EMS that I was just drunk. It was a medical emergency. I am a nurse and a former paramedic and I read the run report and they said I had a blown pupil, I was diaphoretic and, cyanotic. I was told I'm lucky to have even survived or come out of it at all. My lawyer talked me into signing an NGRI even though I didn't do anything wrong and it has ruined my life. I was already disabled from a medication error involving Klonopin. The pharmacy put double the amount I was supposed to have on the bottle and, it was the one time I didn't check the order, I trusted my PCP to call it in. Benzos are horrible and need to be taken off the market.

If you feel like that while the benzo is working that makes sense, however if you feel that way 3/4 days after then it's almost certainly you being anxious about it and the anxiety causing brain fog. That being said do use it as little as possible, I'm just confused about giving out Klonopin on an "as needed" basis since it has an EXTREMELY long duration, like 10-12+ hours vs valium at 6-8, or xanax at about 4-6. That's why usually Klonopins are prescribed daily, it lasts all day anyways.

Dr. Marks, please do a video on Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Syndrome and do a deeper dive into the horrible withdrawal process.
I have taken klonopin daily for over 10 years. I have made several attempts to wean off slowly with my doctor's help. I discovered the term Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Syndrome and realized that I identify with the list of symptoms. Rebound anxiety was the least of my problems. I had shortness of breath to the point that I stopped going to yoga class because I would get short of breath and couldn't keep up (and I have been doing yoga for decades). My chest constantly felt tight and constricted. I started doing yoga at home so I could go at a slow pace, and when I got out of breath I could take breaks.
I was also so tired everyday from dealing with the shortness of breath that I started going to bed right after dinner. I just had to go lay down because I was so tired. Then there was the digestive symptoms and sweating. These symptoms were so difficult, I had trouble getting through the day. It got to the point that I realized that if I'm going to maintain a job, and generally be able to function, I'm going to have to stay on at least a small dose of klonopin until I retire. I only take 1 mg a day so I'm already on a small dose. After witnessing these affects, my doctor allowed me to stop the weaning process. The pandemic had just started and she was uncomfortable about my decreased lung capacity. As soon as I increased it back to 1 mg, I was completely normal again.

I was undergoing cancer treatment and developed bad anxiety and depression halfway through the chemo. My primary NP prescribed 0.5 mg Ativan, which I took 1-2 times a day while we tried various antidepressants to take its place. I took it for 6 months before finally taking gabapentin which controlled the anxiety enough for me to start tapering off the Ativan. I did notice after several months that I started becoming tolerant of the Ativan, but I wouldn't take more of it because I heard it could be addictive. I suffered a lot with the anxiety because I wouldn't take more of it, but the Ativan was the only thing that was really working and allowing me to finish my treatments. So I'm thankful for benzos, they have their place. You just need to be careful with them as you search for a longer term solution. I tapered off slowly, cutting the pills into quarters, and felt more anxiety with each reduction, but that went away after a couple of days. I never felt that the Ativan messed up my thinking or memory. The chemo was way worse for my cognition!

Dr. Marks, thank you for such informative videos. Do you believe the mental health fields have began depending too heavily on pharmaceuticals? Have psychodynamic psychotherapies been pushed too far off to the sidelines, underdeveloped and underfunded? Do you provide psychiatric treatment in the form of psychoanalytic sessions? As you say, these drugs give immediate temporary relief, with possible (likely) consequential side effects, but isn't recovery found in understanding the origins and resolving causes of anxiety? Are psychiatrists trained in the psychodynamics of human development as Freud & others discovered (I guess I must read your book)? Not that some medications aren't warranted, but I believe overbearing capitalism leaning into fascism has brought us to an unfortunate pill popping society more and more dependent on drugs (Big Pharma and a few others) with little room for prioritizing patients. Sadly, mental health assessment and treatment seems to have deteriorated into a medical model: nurses not therapists. Where does it all end??

I rather to get rid of the crippling anxiety when I need to. Anyways, I have to take Venlafaxine 300 mg daily and that stuff is kind of addictive, If I forgot a dose I feel physically ill.

Hello. I've lost and abandoned a fair bit of friends due to them using benzodiazepines.
I have some insight into how it affects conscious thought-processes, from their testament, and my observation.
It would make for some good balance, if you could make a video about some of the challenges with medication side-effects. Statistics, personality changes, interpersonal relationships, workplace and an example story of someone who received benzos by prescription, but spiraled down after taking a few too many or mixed it with alcohol.
Patients have a need to learn to recognize the signs, and more importantly: learn what to do if they find themselves in that situation.

Another reason nobody should be forced off of benzodiazepines. The dangers are not the medicine itself but its cessation. This is true of other medications also. So benzodiazepines may not be the best treatment for anxiety, but they are safe and effective when taken as directed.

I've been on various benzos since February 2017. I literally first took one, and have not had a single day without them ever since.
I'm 43 now, I'm aware of the dementia risks and I have definitely experienced cognitive decline in the form of working memory, but for me, the anxiety I've had since I was 4 that nothing else helps, is just too difficult and unpleasant to cope with anymore.
I developed a tolerance to pretty much all benzos within a few weeks to a few months, and at one point was taking 3-4 different ones every night.
Nowadays, it's just 2mg of Klonopin and half an antihistamine to sleep (apparently long term use of them also causes dementia. Great! lol). The Klonopin does maybe 10% of what it used to, but I don't increase the dose as there's no point, and it's still better than nothing.
If there was something else that could help my anxiety, I would taper off. I tapered off Xanax fine with the help of Valium, and 2 years later tapered off 20mg of daily Valium easily over a few weeks (with my trusty 2mg Klonopin remaining stable).
My memory used to be VERY good. It was somewhat eidetic. It still is, but I'm just so easily distracted that I'm usually not paying attention to very much so obviously I can't recall it later.
I will be in the middle of a sentence, and if anything or anyone interrupts me, what I was about to say next will literally dissolve from my mind. It's just gone. Usually this happens when I was about to jump to a slightly different topic, or if I have multiple things in my head to say, and I can only verbalise one at a time, so the other(s) disappear.
I was actually diagnosed with ADHD (inattentive type) by a psychiatrist due to this, at age 40, with ZERO symptoms prior to the commencement of my daily benzo use. Certainly no sign of ADHD as a child, teenager or leading up to my late 30s. I don't believe I have ADHD. I believe my working memory is compromised from the daily benzos.

Do you know what caused anxiety to start at age 4? If it’s trauma there are methods to help get rid of it. The one I use is EFT, emotional freedom technique‘s. It seems like it couldn’t possibly do anything, but it’s very good at removing the jolt of the original trauma from your nervous system. That way you remember the trauma but you don’t feel it. See gold standard EFT. You learn to do it on yourself so it’s free. Good luck

I was stared on Klonopin when I was 35 to treat the side effects of Prozac and after 29 years needed 4mg and 10mg of Ambien and it wasn’t enough It took a year to get off and nothing could describe how bad the withdrawal was
I was done with it BUT it really wasn’t done with me even after over 1 year and ultimately I had to start taking Temazepam 30 as I was afraid to leave the house and this in combination with Trazodone and Mirtazapine has really given me good quality of life again as this helps me stay in a good place to deal with my CLL and reverse left shoulder replacement

My uncle was taking 12mg of valum for insomnia for decades. I don't understand why a doctor would do that! He now has no memory and gets confused and he is in his 60s. I was prescribed klonopin 3 times a day for a couple of years. I noticed it wasn't doing anything for my anxiety anymore and stopped taking it cold turkey. I had panic attacks for weeks that would last for hours, but no physical problems. I now take the lowest dose of Ativan about once every couple of months and have gabapentin for anxiety. I am so glad I didn't stay on benzos for longer because of what happened to my uncle!

Few psychiatrists are willing to discuss how anticholinergics have significant evidence for causing cognitive impairment or dementia. Benzos are bad, but it seems like anticholinergics are worse, at least in so far as dementia. The thing is, psychs are aware. For example, using Risperdal for the elderly - the one older antipsychotic with no anticholinergic activity. Hope this can be discussed!

Dr. Marks, I very much appreciate your videos. One thing which you might wish to consider is a a neurology discussion on the differences in the brains GABA receptors reaction to metabolized medications via the hepatic P450 enzymes, particularly CYP3A4, and cross-medication inducer and inhibitor conflicts. For example, Clonazepam's effects can be either enhanced or reduced via shared medication use of the same CYP3A4 enzyme substrate with each drugs metabolites. Clonazepam is prescribed for me because I seemed to have inherited a genetic predisposition for Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). But I also take other GABA receptor medication which more powerfully induce CYP3A4 activity of the metabolites which cross the blood brain membrane. Accordingly, I have to research all of my meds for cross-hepatic enzyme interactions. Additionally, this is why ethanol of any kind, although it primarily uses a different CYP substrate for metabolism should not be taken with benzodiazapines as the synergy intensifies the sedation affect of such medications, and more dangerously, barbiturates. As you should know, "the dose makes the poison." But additionally strong cross metabolite CYP inducers (e.g., CYP2D6 and CYP1A2) can "make the poison," too. If people depend on most prescribers or pharmacists to warn about hepatic enzyme substrate inducer/inhibitor risks, they are delusional. Odds are, you may not as well. People who push pills without understanding everything a person is taking/using, are partly to blame for accidental overdose deaths. Of course, Fentanyl is the chief killer with or without any concomitant use of any medication or substance. Enough said.
