FINALLY a dog that's not food or toy driven👍perfect for my labrador. every single trainer just says use food.
I’m impressed that there’s even a Labrador on this earth that doesn’t love food 🙈
@@jessicalinneaa he does work for his ball but is a bit over excited to concentrate, but we're getting there. Check him out at jaxthelovinglab and subscribe👍
My dog doesn’t care about toys food or pets, wish you luck
@@jessicalinneaa Same, mine will do anyhtign for food, toys or praise. She just doesnt like bananas... weird xD
@@1cbrracer Happened to my lab too! gets too excited for some toys and just keeps jumping trying to bite it.
It was so sweet saying this huge big man cuddling and rolling about with kendrick 😊
He’s such a beautiful dog as well, love his coat.
I smiled and laughed the whole video. Sooo wholesome. I have a lab who thinks nothing trumps other dogs (we're starting to have consistantly good passes with people), sooo she comes when she wants to. I'm gonna try out these techniques! Thank you.
I've been training my lab puppy with her meal kibble and 99% of the time recalling to just her name and "let's go" (deliberately not using "come"). At 7 months, she started becoming more independent off leash, delaying her recall and needing multiple calls, so I switched to cheap hot dogs and dropped her meals by 1/2c. Began the Beckman discipline - "come" means pronto run in and sit in front close enough I can grab her collar. The hot dogs def got her attention! Back to 100% recall off leash, even when after our cat 😁
We have 2 Bordeaux and it makes such a nice change to see a trainer work with one!! It's also refreshing to see it isn't just our Bordeaux who are more interested in guarding and praise rather than food or toys! :)
OH, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!! My puppies are Tibetan Mastiffs, and they do not care about balls, toys, or treats! All training classes, online or live, are based on an excited jumpy puppy who needs to be calmed down. I need magic most of the time for my girls to go out:)) I am so happy I finally found you!
Food or toys as praise works well. As you have shown though, if a dog is not food or toy driven, praise can make a big impact.
I even prefer starting with praise, and if that's not enough go to toys and food.
We have a Danish Spitz, he's a little bundle of love, energy and affection. He was terrible, food or play weren't any help so we bought a slip lead and followed exactly as you did with Kendrick in the walking and this recall video. Love and praise won the day and he's gone from a nightmare to on the lead and never any recall to being a joy.
I really appreciate that you do videos with dogs who don't respond to food rewards too. As an owner of a batsh*t crazy border collie who literally spits treats on the ground in front of me just to show me that she won't be working for something so lame, I can't stress enough how frustrating training is when you have nothing to motivate your dog with and everyone keeps saying the same thing - the one that doesn't work. There's basically zero content on youtube on how to train a dog with anything else than food and I tried and failed with four different professional dog trainers, because they were clueless when she spat that treat and looked up like 'what else you got, huh?!' It was so funny to see their faces tho, I must admit.
Thank you, really great stuff you're putting out there!
Oh my goodness, my border collie also spits out her treats too! I call her a menace to society or a tornado. 😂 When she’s hyper focused on a ball or toy, she refuses to take any food. She only does this when we’re outside so it’s been super hard training her recall. She’s extremely toy motivated so she does amazing on a long lead and playing fetch, but the second I have her off leash, she gets more excited about random strangers throwing her ball than recognizing I’m more than happy to throw it for her. I might have to try out this whistle thing though and fingers crossed it works!
Thank you! My now 6 month old Cane Corso has begun his phase of pushing boundaries and his normally amazing recall has just gone out of the window. I hope he grows out of this phase but for now it’s just training, training and more training.
Fantastic Will, so good to see a session without food or toys like you say not every dog has that drive and if they do you won’t always have them with you. So another option is great to have up your sleeve. Amazing 🤩 👍🏻
Thank you, this was so informative. Actually, that was two sessions in one: learning to calm a pup's over-exitability and jumping up on me, as well as recall. YAY 😁!
Love your content 🙏🏻 you are helping massively with the 3.5 year old collie I just took on. He has had zero training and is as collies are…….. wired and needs his pack leader to be present. He doesn’t respond to food or toys so I have been using praise like you are in this video, however my praise is a dumbed down version because I am self conscious. As I was chuckling at you praising on this vid I realised if a big dude like you can do it for the dog then what am I scared of. You just helped again so thank you 🙏🏻
Your physical praise is so exciting that my tail nearly wags, I could only imagine how exciting and motivational it is for a dog! Well done mate!
Yet another wonderfully constructed training session by Will Atherton. These videos filled as they are with unending green meadows, quite beautiful hedges --and an overcast or a lightly clouded sky overhead, complete with that modulated middle-England accent, always make me yearn for Old Blighty where I spent a large part of my youth.
I recently adopted a 3 year old beagle-mix who loves tracking and baying when he catches a deer’s scent. He runs away tracking the scent off into the woods and it’s almost impossible to get him to come back when I call his name. He comes when I call his name at home around the house, but seems to forget it when he catches a scent outside so I know he’s really just doing what a beagle loves doing. I don’t want him to get hurt or hurt anything else so I’m excited to work with him and the whistle to see if we can improve his recall. Thank you for your expertise and for the help!
Maybe try an e-collar to remind him whenever he doesn't come when you call?
I haven’t even finished the video and I already know you just changed our lives! My pretty boy is definitely touch-driven and I never even realized I could fix our recall this way.
awww love watching the good boy pats 🥰 this guy gets results
Amazing! And what a beautiful dog! I love that you let him do what he’s been bred to do: stand guard. I also love seeing the playful side of this breed. It’s just so sad that these giants aren’t with us as long.
Brilliant. My female Bordeux is such a nob, will be trying this.
Training my mastiff pup and he isn't food driven at all. Kendrick's series has been very helpful for us! Thank you
This is brilliant! I have been wanting to learn more about prong collars, and have demonstrated how to use them in the most humane and professional manner. And I love how you say ""Oh Good boy!" in a high pitched voice lol Thank you SO MUCH!
Loved this, I did this with my Bullmastiff today, the rough housing worked a treat. Like Kendrick, my lad isn’t interested in treats or toys while out walking. It tired him out too. Thank you Will you’re the best.
Dec 2023
So excited to see work with a guard type dog. We have a Cane Corso whom is extremely protective of her family and we never wanted to train that out of her...thank you!!!
Great video !
Love how he calms him and the dog catches on right away.
This channel has absolutely fantastic content and advice. 👌 we get our lab pup in about 4 weeks and im loving swatting up before he comes to create a great dog from the get go. Fantastic keep it coming 👏👏
Your videos are so helpful! Great to see the different technique needed for Kendrick vs Sandy. Can’t wait for your next Kendrick video!
Such a goofy dog! What a cutie! Great session Will! Very useful video
We enjoy your videos so much. Our Fynn now walks with us without pulling because of your video. The recall is the next serious lesson he has to learn, and I think he'll learn it very fast using your training methods. Tysm for taking the time to do these.
Your videos are a joy to watch, thank you!
Incredible love this video so much! great advice of how to get recall nailed using a prong tool. a wonderful example of our boyo Kendricks temperament and character, (he’s a big softie!)and that it’s not always as easy as when the food drive isn’t there. thanks Will.
It is an absolute joy to watch you work. Thank you so much for these videos.
So helpful, I have a good recall with my DDB puppy, now I am going to have a go with a whistle.
You are by far my favorite trainer and you keep reminding me Calm loving leader Thank You 🙏🏻
Absolutely fascinating!!
Find what drives them more than anything then put a barrier to entry between it and them!! Incredible channel
Good video awesome dog training walking great job. Great show
Wonderful you are a great trainer !
So glad to come across this video. Mine is a mastiff X ridgeback with very similar traits to this dog, so is very relatable.
This is amazing Thank you. Not so easy with 3 dogs but definitely going to incorporate it
What a perfect video! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm, I have learned so so much! My dog moose is three years old he’s big he’s just like this dog in just about every way and loves physical praise and with my dog weighing just about as much as I do LOL the prong collar has completely changed our lives!
I’m in the middle of training our Presa Canario puppy and I’m realizing the he too has very low treat/toy drive while training. He just wants to be either near me, or off smelling things. I will definitely try the praise reward to see how that works. Great job!
Loved that!
Great trainer with a great dog.
Love it Will you are the perfect size for this dog. We have a Mastiff here glad he is so well behaved. Lots of training has made him well behaved. He always looks so massive
I value Will's training video's, one thing I wish he could incorporate into these training scenarios is to actually include working the dog in real day to day environments. For example a walk through the neighborhood which would of course include distractions of other dogs on walks barking, cars, people walking by, etc...
Amazing video. Good job man
Amazing video!
Just like our ddb pup… thanks for this… 1 session opened the door and made a huge difference
This helped me a lot with my American bulldog for sure🙌🏾
Real good video👍
Glad I've found this as am struggling with my 7 month shollie, praise looks like it mite be it
loved that you breathed when he did his shake. For them its like the same!
On point training 👌
💯💯💯
Great video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Loveyour channel as a non dog owner...yet. I ja e seen other trainers but i fi d really usefull your videos. I live in Italy. I would absolutely try to get training from you for my dog if i were in UK
I will check your online trainings when i get a dog🎉
I"m glad to see him playing like that. I have a Lab, Pitt, Great Dane mix. Who likes to play like that. My boy is 19months old. I am still teaching him recall.
Lab pit Great Dane mix …. Oh why do I think that will be just a gorgeous big doggo 😊
Amazing ❤
Love it. I got to try that
Im in Canada and I WISH you were accessible to us! We have a Tosa Inu that we rescued at 6 weeks old. We just knew he was a mastiff of some sort. Our previous dog was a Cane Corso so we were aware of the working breeds needs. The Tosa is next level 😅 Bernie is 16 months old, 130 lbs and sweet ad can be. He is also a handful! We do have him with a behaviourist but wish we could bring him to you!
Great job! My parents have a New Foundlander, I tried to explain this to them, but now I can share it. I started helping people with their dogs at the start of this year and hope to be able to help as many dogs as you with as much calm energy as you one day. My clients also love your video's!
That is awesome!
@@willathertoncaninetraining
I have an imported 7 month old Thai ridgeback weirdly she is not food orientated at all,
The Problem I'm finding is she is very high energy the only way I can burn that energy off then start training is if she is let off leash in an enclosed feild,
I walk this dog for up to 2 hours she still will have energy so leaving her loose to run is the way which then creates the terrible recall issue she has,
She just runs off in the feild to anyone and any dog its becoming very anoying now! 😡
Any suggestions?
Love this one
Thank you so much for this video. My presa × corso is just like this and I have been makimg no head way. He is forever serious.
It was so much fun watching and hearing you with that mastiff 😂. Surely that would work on anyone?! 😂
U rock brother
I recently got a new pup and your channel has been amazing. Not just on ways to train or correct my pups behavior but also mine. He's a mixed breed I have no idea his breed I'm only guessing and he is not food or toy motivated
I love how you love dogs!
So helpful my dog and Kendrick so similar
Such good boy!!! makes me laugh when he bounds after 'Kendrick come!'
I have an 8 month English Mastiff weight 85 kg relative high energi, almost temperament the same as Kendrick, noseworking, pure guard . I am looking foreward to working with this.
Now add one, or rather subtract, motivation. My rescue adult Chow X is not food or toy motivated, nor is he particularly interested in pleasing me, but he does care if I get mad. The only way I have been successful in training is blocking him from doing what he wants. ie learned to sit by blocking him from leaving the car until he sat. All I have been able to manage with him is heel, come, sit, and stay; come is dependent on distraction attraction. Got him to stop biting by getting mad and giving him a time out in a separate room., that only took two times for him to change behavior.
Kendrick is adorable!!!
I love your videos. LOVE THEM. May I ask - any training tips for training wire-haired terrier puppies? Our puppy is 9 weeks old and so smart - please help us stimulate him with training specific for these dogs.
Oh my goodness, I loved watching this video. As always such great teachings. So much so it made me want to get in there for a treat and a belly rub! 😂
Aren't prong collars illegal in many countries? I fully appreciate that it's only being used to send a subtle signal and not inflict pain in this case, but still ...
Any tool can be misused is the problem. Doesn't mean the tool is bad.
13:51 his alligator death roll but for a second he gets stuck on his back 😂😂
Great videos mate and well done communicating what your doing AND why/how it works. Curious tho…is there a specific reason you raise the pitch of your voice when praising the dogs? Not really keen to sound like a castrated paw-paw unless it serves a purpose. Cheers
my german boxer girl fell in love with kendrick so we defenitly wanna see more of him ;)
You are brilliant at this. It must tire you out too.
LMAO! You also described me with my GSD Hendrix! He is food and toy driven, buy he loves when I get on the floor and he can roll around and get chest scratches, butt rubs, kick his legs, and wiggle.
Great video. I have a question about recall where can I go to ask about the problem I have.
Can u do more information on xl American bully’s please
Tanja K
I would like to know which prong collar u used on Kendrick. There are so many, I do not know which will be best for training my Kangal mix not to be a nightmare everytime a dog comes across. I used a slip leash today for the first time and just this was much better than a collar and leash. I had a better contact with him and could correct him easier.
Ur awesome with dogs
LMAO! You also described me with my GSD Hendrix, 6'3 250 and rolling around in the grass talking to a dog in the best falsetto I can manage! He is food and toy driven, buy he loves when I get on the floor and he can roll around and get chest scratches, butt rubs, kick his legs, and wiggle.
This man loves dog!😊
Going for an hour walk in the woods with my DDB I will see him for about 15mins the way he goes down every trail. They are the best tho and love attention.
On the ball
So what happens when I forget the whistle? I’m not into carrying a whistle all the time just so my dog will come…I’m glad you touched on the hyper reaction to your attention tho cuz im reluctant to praise my puppy cuz she gets mental from it lol
Is there a specific whistle you would recommend? Thanks
Hi Will, this is really interesting for our dog who has become immune to the command "Come" when out and about..... Would you then stay with the whistle for the rest of it's life? or bring back the "Come" command once recall is nailed on?
Will, thank for the great video. I've picking up our new family member, a three year of English Golden /Labrador (Goldador) next week and I was considering using a clicker, obviously you prefer the whistle, I was wondering why you had this preference ?
Stronger sound!
Kendrick is such a sweetheart.
Do you eventually go back to the ‘come’ command? Or is it the whistle forever?
Great video Will. Thanks for all you do. Been doing long line stuff with my 16mnth staff bitch. Her recall is great until she sees another dog. She's not aggressive in the slightest but her approach is far too full on. When stationary I can get her to leave anything as we do a lot of flirt pole and bite work but when we are moving the closest I can get to ppl is about 15ft in a verbal heal before she bolts. I'm thinking an e collar might be better for this type of thing?
Hello… what brands of acceptable quality prone collar, say on Amazon, do you recommend? Thank you
Well I think this is EXACTLY how I can teach my almost 1 year old puppy to answer a recall. I have a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. Heś 120 pounds now, and one big teddy bear but stubborn. He knows heś very strong and intelligent. Thereś so little information about this breed like in training videoś. My dog, whoś name is Sven, is a lovely loyal working dog, and he knew how to sit, or lay with 8 weeks, but recall is a thing. He makes the mikky out of me.
The title should have been "Big bearded man plays on floor with dog" Great video
Hey will, hope all is well, I have a 8 month old male boxer who has been a pleasure to train, I put as much work in as I possibly can and have reaped the rewards. I purchased your puppy starter pack and have worked from but of that not all but many.
We are now at a stage where I’m walking him off lead past other dogs where we are using heel command but he’s forever edging forward to try and make a bold for it. I have a prong collar but am reluctant to use it as he’s done so well but this is something I am struggling to implement. Do you think it would be a good idea to put him back on a long line with the prong collar?
When we do meet other dogs I have tried the recall back with praise then let him go again but that seems to be forgotten for him and he’s completely obsessed with trying to play with other dogs.
I walk away from him and call him and it’s a 50/50 chance he will come (depending on how long with been out for etc how many other dogs we’ve met)
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Kind regards
Luke.
is there a link where you worked with this Mastiff on heeling?
He looks so physically and emotionally distressed from those prong corrections. You mean man! :P
rubbish.
Can you please share where you got that awesome whistle?
Are you in the uk? I have a whistle for my dog and just got it from pets at home. Hope that helps :-)
Going to give this a go however my problem with my 6 month old American bully/staffie is she sometimes will start biting the lead then won't let go and its a fight to get her to stop and calm down again. She wants to grab and pull on things alot
Hi Matt, has your dog calmed down? My son has the same problem with his bully.
