This dudes a genius. Not only is he training the dog, he’s training his viewers on how to do these exercises on their own. He’s using explanation of what he wants to do, reasoning in why he is doing it, then constantly repeats what we need to do to try these exercises at home properly. He’s a great teacher for dogs and humans as well. Awesome stuff 👍🏼
Thanks so much! It's great to hear when people like our style of teaching! Hope you if our channel helpful😊
Hi I'm trying to train my 3 year old mastiff x recall and over all he is real great when it's just me he is perfect on lead and off lead but when I'm with my children he doesn't want to listen and it's hard to walk him
People need to realise its not so much about dog training but more like couples therapy 😊
@@willathertoncaninetraining I have got a lab he's 12 weeks old how do I stop him from jumping up and he's chewing a lot of thinks his very mouthy dog 🐕 please help me many thanks
@@steffikyberd1189 It might be a case you need to increase his mental and physical exercise which will help with annoying behaviours. But it's important to remember dogs explore the world through their mouths, but we do have a video looking at the best ways to tackle puppy biting: ua-cam.com/video/Atm9D6h6cKo/v-deo.html
You are the only trainer who I can watch your videos and not feel stupid or awful about myself that we have been doing things wrong, you explain things so well & reassure that things can be changed ! Thank you so much, we are going to try this on our 6 month old Husky who picks and chooses when he wants to return!
Ugh I love my own 5 month Husky, but the 50% recall is not fun. Maybe this Vid will help? Best of luck to you.
@@engine2truck6 same reason I'm here.
We’re all here with Huskies I think hahaha
JRT mix here..... tough and stubburn🤭
I mean I think one can do this without having to walk around with a rape whistle
He presents training in 7 days. Each of 7 items are commands that he believes a dog should know. They are presented in part ii of the book ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq . The parts of the guideare divided: part i know your dog part ii the seven commands part iii cures for 7 behavior problems. Each chapter presents a topic, a dog's story, and a "what to do". It was written simply and you can jump from chapter to chapter to review anything as needed.
The best 'Good Boy' praise on the internets!
Ow good boy!
Dude when you blowed your whistle my dog came running towards me all the way from the second floor even though I’ve never thought him that hahahah
I train service dogs for a living and I love how this man thinks and trains.
Simple, logical and easy to understand explanations. I aspire to be an amazing dog trainer and these videos truly help me.
The funny part is that the things that make him a good techer to humans also make him a good trainer to dogs.
Dogs want to do what you tell them but you need to make them understand the rules. If you don't stick to the rules how are they supposed to learn them!?
"I aspire to be an amazing dog trainer and these videos truly help me."
High praise!
Do you still train service dogs? I’m in Florida and have been trying to find a trainer with service dog experience.
Hehe you praise him so nicely my dog thought she had done something great! Made her day :)
Aw 🥰
My dog was listening to it too 🤣
The back drop of this video, the church, the slight fog...wow
My wife and i have recently rescued a 10 month old bullmastiff. Who had absolutely no manners no recal and would not walk on a lead. We have followed your advice incredibly close and he now walks on the lead without issue, brilliant recall and excellent manners. Thankyou so much will 🙏🙌
I am so proud of and happy for the big guy.
Awesome that the training skills worked for you all! Thank you for sharing this, as it inspires others with dogs to learn the same and have hope.
Meanwhile on DogTube: So thats how you train your human to whistle and give you treats
"oh, yep! Sorry boss, I'm on my way." love it
I don’t even have dog but Im still going to watch every video
Well prepared if you ever get one!
You can have an imaginary dog.
Hahaha right? I want him and Rachel to make a cooking show! Why? Cus I like listening to them talk! 😆😍
Don't worry mate sit down with wifey or GF and talk it through include all the benefits of having a Dog like friendship, loyalty, safety etc.
I also did the same NOW I HAVE 6 DUCKS and 2 CHICKEN 😆 😂
Obviously a great dog trainer, but it’s impressive how good of a human trainer he is. The explanations are very easy to see, hear and understand. The repetition is exactly perfect: sufficient but not overbearing. Really great video.
You need a TV show. Engaging and knowledgeable! I don't even have a dog and I love watching
My friends and family call me the “dog whisperer”. I’ve always trained my own dogs and have worked with the pups of friends. I’m always looking to learn and watch as many trainers on UA-cam as I can. This man is a superb trainer. So positive. So caring. The dogs he works with are lucky pups. Thank you sir for your content!
Your,"Oh good boy, fank you"in the style of Mickey Mouse is simply superb. Great videos 👍
I was thinking the exact same Mickey Mouse voice thing
Yep. I'm mostly here for his "ohh good boy"s 😆
I’m not a professional trainer but I’ve always taught all my dogs to recall to a marine whistle. This is a whistle attached to life jackets and can be heard for miles over a flat terrain like water and can be heard by dogs from great distances even in city like terrain. I use liverwurst as the reward for the recall to the whistle. To me having a way to recall a dog might wonder off to a distance beyond what our voices can travel is possibly lifesaving. Great video! Love your content!!
I love watching his videos! He’s realistic and it’s nice to see you doing this with older dogs and not just puppies.
Oh, my, I am so thankful for your wisdom! My almost two-year old Golden Retriever is a huge leash puller. In twenty minutes this morning, employing your techniques, she responded beautifully, and we had so much fun! Thank you ever so much!
Our golden retriever breeder gave us our puppy with a whistle. They trained all the pups from very very young, whisteling and then putting their food down. When we got him, the recall was already in place. Today he is almost 5 and he comes back perfectly! I absolutely agree to train a dig from early age (when possible). Thanks for your great videos.
Using a whistle when putting the food down is such a good idea 🤩 If we ever get another pup it’s some I’m definitely going to do 👍👍
Never mind the dogs, when are you starting a channel to teach us how to grow such a magnificent beard?
I think it starts with a fantastic accent actually. What beard wouldn’t want to grow then?
Growing a Magnificent Beard is probably one of the hardest things in the world as it requires you doing absolutely Nothing.
Just wait till puberty kicks in 🤭
Hahaha gas
Try searching growing a magnificent beard on UA-cam or Google. This is for dog training. lol
I adopted a dog the other day, one who'd been more or less a stray a lot of her life - in a month, she's gone from being rescued with her mate to having a litter, mothering the pups and weaning them, then being the last one waiting to be adopted.
She's been through a lot, and didn't even know what a dog toy was before her initial rescue.
Needless to say, this girl doesn't have an idea about training. Lessons like these are really going to come in handy!
I'm so glad I found u today.. These are the best training videos on YT. I've watched Cesar, who I love, but he is so vague. Nothing concrete I can do. It's like most trainers don't want to give away their secrets. U are so informative, pls keep making videos.
Check out leerburg great content also
Also check out dog bone hunter
Cesar sucks. You're better off watching McCann Dogs or Victoria Stillwell's show "Its Me or the Dog".
Totally agree.i used to love Cesar but after watching others unfortunately I am not super keen on him anymore.
i have a 6 month old Australian cattle dog and struggles a lot with recall in distracted area. Since we live on a farm it is soo important for our dogs to have recall, since we dont want them chasing farm animals around and not come back to us if we want them to stop. Ive learned a lot just by watching this video and will definitely start this training with my pup. thank you!!! (edit: my pup wont be used for any work on the farm, recall is just important to us either way)
thank you so much! everyone just kept telling me to "use a long leash and treats" but actually seeing it and having the explanation of why we do each step is super helpful. I know what I'm doing with my dog this week!
I'm a dog trainer in the U.S.A. I have a client with a Weimaraner who is struggling with recall. I asked him to buy a 30 foot recall training leash, which he did, but he is still struggling even with my instruction. It was raining today during our lesson and not good for training recall. I just sent him this video so that he could really understand what I'm talking about. Thank you Will for posting. It gets the message across very well.
... this is just sad to read , as this is one of the worse recall videos Ive ever actually seen. To each its own, but if you couldnt see the issues in this you shouldnt be training dogs either. The whole point of a GOOD RECALL is for off leash, so why teach the dog on a leash?? If verbal is not enough, minimal e collar usage is the answer but this dog was coming on the verbal command but when its on a leash it will act different then off so its not even fair to train the dog in this manner, let it off the leash with all the energy and then lets see what happens. Usually his videos are good but this was bad bad.
@yummybong148 he said at 2:12 he will eventually train the dog off the leash AFTER he understands the whistle recall perfectly. Why should he let the dog off the leash when he doesn't know yet if the dog will run off or stay close? Seems safer to train with a long slip lead and whistle as the first step-- especially for a dog that gets overly excited by other animals or people nearby and might just take off
@@margoravenspire2604 ... you can literally work on recall within your house or a fenced yard and progress from there. You do realize this guy has a facility right so its a controlled environment, so what are you on about cause you clearly didnt read my whole message or youd realize alot of what was stated had reasons with better options takling about this guys comment and not the video itself. I even said the dog in this video is responding to the recall well before he whistles so his whistles are pointless so I have no clue what your on about.
@@yummybong148 lol "e collar." Does the euphemism make you feel better? Just call it a shock collar and move on. No wonder you're like "why's he using a leash?!" if you use an e collar. 🙄
@@adspeed7292005 haha awww lil snowflake, do e collars trigger you, guess theres no prong collars for trainning either eh doesnt work that way with every dog there all different. You know you can buy ones that dont shock right nor would I ever use a shock one that I havent used on myself first but yah go off muron. Yah when doing off leash training I'm wondering why hes using a leash, thats a legit question otherwise its not off leash training fk me your dense.
I would love to see someone do a recall video for a hunting dog (gsp) that isn't already trained on recall but is more interested in running prey.
I'd be very interested in a recall video with hunting dogs/dogs with a high prey drive too. Although my problem is my Japanese Spitz, she decides she wants to go and find a dead mouse or something and runs off 🤦. A bit of chicken in my pocket is not worth coming to compared to a dead mouse or something else that she finds yummy!
@@nataliejarvis1686 Guess you gotta start carrying dead mice around to convince her to listen 😂

Explaining it to myself here-
Start the process of moving recall onto a wistle to guarantee 100% success. Pip the whistle 2 times to determine recall. Start with concept of coming to me = reward and praise and claps. Must be on long leash so that if he ignores you encourage with a tug and still reward all three things. First step is to shout “come” and as soon as he comes back reward. It needs to be instant and heavily reward so that he wants to come to you and sees it as a fun experience. Vocal inflection, physical touch and treat. Must do this for around 10 minutes just to charge marker. Just showing that coming to you means greatness and reward. This Is a long process.
1. Shout come with long leash on. Repeat to drill into head for 15 minutes in first session.
Next part is transitioning it over to a whistle once he knows coming to you is a great thing. Make sure you have lots of space. When he’s coming to you pip the whistle TWO times to indicate that means recall. So whistle while he’s coming to you and reward like normal. In his mind he will associate two pips with coming back to you. You need to do this for awhile so he begins to associate the pip pip with coming back. Very important to give great praise.
2. Say “come” and when they are on there way pip the whistle twice. Repeat for awhile with a lot of praise. Let the dog wonder and shout “come” and just pip the whistle. Remember that if he isn’t coming automatically pull a little to encourage him to come.
Once this is drilled ans you think your ready try just pip the whistle. If he comes back make sure you make a huge deal out of it. This is a long process and make sure set your dog up for success so don’t try other steps until your positive your dog understands the first step of coming to you when shouting come= rewards then after 20 minutes including whistle into it for awhile as-well. Recall is so important 🐶. Give really high value when he has a break through with a certain step. Make sure you do this for a while before including distractions.
I adopted a year old blue heeler. She was found wandering down a high traffic road. That fact makes me scared to let her off lead at all. I've been working with her leash training and various tricks like sit, lay down, shake, and roll over. She is a fast learner. Maybe in a month or so, I'll get a much longer leash and start the recall training. I dropped her lead one day and she took off running as fast as she could, thankfully in circles near me. But when I called her and sat down, she came back to me and was very happy to see me. I praised her but unfortunately didn't have any treats.
This video is very helpful. Thank you.
I love how detailed your videos are. I ruined 4 recall commands with my 1y/o border collie, and just a week ago I started using a wistle, and this video is just what I needed so I don't mess up again. ☺️ so thank uuu 😁
We speak 3 languages at home and use a recall phase in the language that is less used inside the house and a phrase that won't come up in conversation or any other time. We use french "au pied" (to the foot) for recall or anytime the dog is getting too far ahead off leash or on leash and I want him to reposition back into heal (like glued to the side of my leg/foot which is very important when crossing the street or crosswalk or when off leash in my neighborhood because of so many scooters/motorcycles using the sidewalk). As english speaker I really love the simplicity of "au pied" but the whistle is a great option too.
@@avivamae5171 interesting comment makes a ton of sense cheers
This is the best dog training channel I’ve seen before. Great! We’re looking to get a new dog, but nobody trains their dogs much anymore outside of sit, stay, come, and bed, and we really want to train him/her up well. Especially with a breed that is so smart it seems almost unfair not to train them very well
I have whistle trained my Golden Retriever since he was a puppy (he's now 1.5), so he knows exactly what the whistle means. While I was watching this video he was fast asleep, but as soon as you used the whistle in the video, he woke up and looked at me like: "But.. I'm already here" 🤣🤣 His recall is good without distractions. However, if there is any distraction he'll decide to completely ignore me and run towards the distraction (usually another dog).. It's super frustrating!
Same here, i have a puppy Australian Labradoodle and her recall is perfect in the garden and quiet fields. With other dogs though no chance at the moment SO frustrating
Its really hard to ignore other dogs for my dog too haha
He's a bishon
I love how he looks and sounds so tough but when praising Sandy he shows his wholesome side
Brilliant video, love to see you working with Sandy. I enrolled on your Perfect Puppy course as we picked up our 8 week old GSP last Sunday & all going well so far, thanks to your excellent course. Just need to get our 3 year old GSP walking to heal and recall as good as this now. Certainly got my hands full and keeping me busy but amazing to see the improvement in both our dogs. Can’t thank you enough :)
Bought your book! Should be delivered today! I can’t wait to read it. Love your videos
So absolutely clear! Thank you Will!
Brilliant informative videos. Great to see these Will. The visuals really help see the stuff in action.
Did this for an afternoon with my 1 year old labradoodle and it's already night and day. THANK YOU
This video is both so helpful and so delightful!
LOVELY dog and setting! Excellent training video. I will be going out to teach this to my 5 month old Golden Retriever today!
So well done, and explained really well. Thank you.
Absolutely flawless & beautiful - have a wee tear of joy in my eye watching you!
I love that he explains the psychology behind the behavior/correction!! Absolutely genius! I really enjoy watching these videos
Keep making these videos please! You are awesome and nonjudgmental and explain it well
Just stumbled across your channel and wow I wish you every success. Very relatable guy with bags of knowledge and experience and you can really tell he loves this job.
My pup is 12 weeks and in all honesty I forgot how hard it was 20 years ago when I had pups. 🙈 Thankful for UA-cam and this channel to get me focused and through. Rome wasn’t build it in a day eh!
Cheers
Thanks for the tips. Love your videos!
I’ll be using this with our pup! Thanks so much for your guidance. You made one happy and trained pup!
I am actually loving the location you are training the dog!🥰
I am loving this guys method and how knowledgeable and honest he is. Seems to be a perfect balance between positive reinforcement and fair corrections without causing fear or distress to the dog. I love that the dogs look to be enjoying working with him and wanting to please him.
Such great and practical advice.
Wow, by far the best training video I’ve seen and exactly what I needed. Thank you.
Fantastic Will, nice, clear and simple video. I just need to put in the hard graft now 👍🏻
Amazing video Will - great level of detail and instruction and very helpful. Thank you for giving such great value.
Excellent tutorial loved it. Thanks
I love your videos. They give me so many great ideas to help me train my cattle dog I recently adopted from the shelter. The videos are especially great because it's so clear that Will really loves the dogs.🙂
Bloody brilliant. Proof a gentle and supportive approach is the best way for both.
Really great videos! So helpful, clear, direct and positive for humans and dogs. Your approach makes training effective and fun for everyone.
Just love your videos - u have a great way of talking to new inexperienced learners. Great stuff 😊
Seriously the best training video I've seen out there thank you.
This guy is an absolute champion ! Thank you from Australia
This guys the best hands down you’ve made me so much more confident and happy in litteraly hours
Your praise voice is a near perfect Micky Mouse. Love your work man. Best on UA-cam
Sandy IS such a clever boy!! So good!!
Great video. Very pleased I found this today. Finally feeling optimistic about training again.
Excellent video, perfect timing to train my 5 month Goldendoodle. Recall is one of the most challenging parts of training. Thanks for a well explained video!
such a joy to watch. very useful too. thanks
Love your approach! It’s the same as what I do with my clients! You communicate every detail very well for the dog’s guardian (owner) to understand step by step.👍
Wonderful video!! I'm going to try it. Thank you!
Thank you for your wisdom, I haven't even watched this yet, but I've seen some of your shorts and I think you're great. Looking forward to the lesson.
What a brilliant video, thank you so much for sharing
I really enjoy your videos. Practical with real results. Just the right balance rather than other social media dog trainers who only use a softly softly approach to all sides of training
My 3 year old Boerboel is in for some training after watching this. Love the content and the way you present it, absolutely superb
Wonderful style of teaching and great relationship building with the dog, made it fun for the dog too, excellent :)
Omg this is absolute gold dust for me! Thank you! I'm practising this tomorrow first thing! 😊
enjoying your videos, glad i found them! looking forward to try your exercises with my dog!
Thank you for your simple methods...
Some seriously good training going on here. Thanks.
Just started doing this with my 13 month old lab. Long lines are great but i have been yanked a couple of times. Hes good with no distractions but other dogs not so great. I avoid busy parks for now and go to recreation grounds which are quieter and often have other dogs in training also. Ive accepted this is no quick fix but one day we will get there and we can enjoy off lead walks like other people
Keep going and you will get there!
Sandy is adorable. And so smart!
very very good work big thanks!
Thank you so much for these awesome resources and sharing your knowledge ❤!
fantastic trainer will be back to watch more
cant wait to see sessions like this with eileen so that i can see how different it is to train a dog breed with a higher work driver than to a breed with a lower work drive.
Great content as always and cant wait for more.
Love this. Thank you for your video's.
This is THE best video for training recall. I come back to again and again. Best teacher.
Love your style and voice, very confident and calm, gentle but firm and in control. I'm a Yank on the coast of Washington state. I just subbed and look forward to learning a ton from you. Cheers, mate....keep up the great work!
The way you say it is so sweet that I have almost started to feel like a good boy! 😁🙃
Another great video Will! 👍👍👍
Really excellent training, very well explained and made simple - and it really is this easy! So many people just fail at the basics and being repetitive.
Love your social skills. It's clear that you're talented and gifted with dogs.
Excellent and this also shows how helpful it can be to have the long line and a helper because it can be a challenge to get the dog to get farther away from you to get plenty of successful reps in. 👍🐕🌼
Thank you: so logical, well taught and gratefull for the lesson.
Absolute genius!!! Thank you for your guidance it has helped me so much with my stubborn 50 pound 5 old American Bully!!! You're awesome keep it up Will!!
Your method is aligned with mine. Great video!!
I love this! Thank you so much for this...
Super clear explanations. Great stuff. Subscribed
Excellent training 🔥🤌🏾👏🏾
My first video of yours to watch. I especially like that it is in progress training vs showing a technique with an already trained dog. I had to restart my now 3 year old English Shepherd recall at 1.5 years as I got lazy about acknowledging check in looks to me and not enough reward (praise or food) for spontaneous returns on our off leash walks. We have done well with not only upping voice and food, but other rewards such as a quick fetch (fav game) and the ultimate reward … playing in the water hose (queue is Sprinkler!!). He now picks up a stick on his way back to me if it is a recall from distraction (deer, squirrel). Ultimately, we are always doing a bit of practice, even on normal walks and I remind myself to keep MY head in the game! BUT, I am always learning and learning how to teach. I look forward to more of your videos!! Thank you.
Fantastic! Can't wait to try this with my dog
Your videos are incredible mate, Thank you! Helping me with my family bully a lot.
