Lovely to see this period, I miss a time when not everything was just a click away on the internet. Yeah it's convenient, but I've always felt like we've lost something
1995-2005 were the last years I got blown away. my age at this time was 10-to 20. 36 now. Sadly 2003 onwards is when the 'WOAH' feeling in gaming started to phase out for me. :(
As a 42 year old, I’m totally with you here. It’s interesting to think about how fellow gamers in their 20s just won’t have any nostalgic pull to photographs and memories like these. But, they’ll have their own.
Thanks for sharing 😊 your memories to us . I also love reminiscing the good old days , it is so fascinating how the early 2000s felt so late 90s . It s terrible to be getting older 😭😞for I have so many vivid memories from those years .
I was 11 in 2001 and it was such a golden era of gaming. I remember being absolutely sucked into FFX on PS2 and Tony Hawks pro skater 3 on GameCube. The nostalgia hits so hard with this video.
It's CRAZY how our childhood and friends growing up video gaming are mirrored except I live in Florida, a half a world away from Vancouver, but just cool to think that kids are the same no matter where they grow up! I had an apartment JUST like that, it was THE HUB for my friends and I, good times!
This video is SO nostalgic for me because my studio room was so similar! I had the same TV with my PS2, DC, GC on an switcher and I also had a Cowboy Bebop (and hack SIGN) wall scroll. Along with a nice collection of DVDs and CDs. Thankfully in Paris we had a Chinatown of sorts where they would sell all the bootleg HK anime boxes so you could get the whole series for 30-40$. My neighbors also bitched about my speakers... I ended putting them on phonebooks and it solved the problem. Man the feels!!
1:40 - PS2, Dreamcast, and CUBE in the living room. With a RE3 store cutout and Cowboy bebop poster. What an early 2000s guy apartment. all u needed back in those days.. 1. CRT TV 2. Consoles 3. PC with 56k, DSL, Cable internet 4. VCR with fansub anime tapes from friends 5. waking up everyday, fresh air, some $$ in your pocket, youth. Man I sure miss those days...
Loved every second of this throwback man. So many memories. FFX had just come out but I was still using my PS2 to play old PS1 games that I hadn't been able to afford like Chrono Cross, FF8, and RE3! Happiness and health to you and your family.
40 dollars for a 2 or 3 episode DVD of Bebop? Whoa... I paid that a couple years ago and got the entire series on BluRay in a steelbook case. Sometimes nostalgia comes with yearning for the ways of old, sometimes it comes with appreciation for certain advancements. Back then I was always recording cassettes of music from the radio and VHS tapes from Toonami and always pestered my dad to bring home more blank tapes... Good times!
I love these nostalgic videos! I am 43 years old and I am remembering with you all those great memories playing games and hanging up with friends for hours!
Johnny, you are one of the only people who talks about gaming that isn't cynical and negative most of the time. Please never change! Your videos feel like going back in time to when my friends and I could just dedicate our time to gaming while working shitty jobs before and while in college. I graduated high school in 01 and this just makes me smile so much

Man this makes me so nostalgic! It really brings me back to hanging out at my friends places, and of my own first apartment from around the same time. Thanks so much for sharing this great trip down memory lane!
It's always nice to see these videos. Time sure flies when you have fun playing games. Back In those days I only had an NES console. I had a lot of fun with it though.
I have a Sony Trinitron 36 inch TV myself. Until I bought an arcade cabinet, that was the heaviest thing I had ever moved. Over 30 pounds, and the worst part was that under the TV, there was no good way to grip it, as it had a recessed checkerboard design, so it would dig until your fingers as you tried to lift that behemoth. My wife said that if we ever sell the house, the TV stays with it.
When you said you've always played on the floor it reminded me that you also sit on the floor for your videos, which is kinda funny trying to imagine that.
I had that exact same table you had back then and still have. Always gave me nostalgia when I watch your videos and you are sitting behind that table on the ground.
This makes me yearn for my childhood and teens when I had my own gaming room and would lost entire school holidays just gaming hard, eating snacks, and sitting in the sun. The nostalgia! Thanks, Johnny
Loved the Sony Vega TV. I had one myself back in the day, and it was fabulous. Unfortunately, I had to get rid of it during a move due to lack of truck space, which I really regret.
I always enjoy when you regale us with stories of your gaming past. It's like hearing a good friend tell stories over drinks. Looking at those photos makes me nostalgic for when I started gaming as the Gamecube was my first game console and playing Star Wars The Clone Wars and Wind Waker on it.
already getting vibes from your "Old Lost Videos Found" video with Rob, from back in that day! What a great nostalgia kick, and a happy new year to you mate!
Seeing stuff like this reminds me of my own childhood nostalgia. I had a PS1 and a PS2, my sister had an N64 and a GameCube, and we all would still watch VHS movies sometimes too.
That was considered a REALLY good sony 36 inch TV back then. $3000+ Back in the day where wire management was almost impossible to do. $25-$35 CD's $40 DVD's $80 Games even the worst bad ones Internet so painfully slow that nobody wanted to bother with it. Videogame downloads didn't exist. Online shopping was dogshit and people were terrified to use their creditcard online.
This is what happens when you don’t do drugs. I had so many great games and consoles but I sold them all for drugs in my early 20s so I have none of them. Don’t do drugs kids
I was born in 1990, and your stories are completely different from the reality of my country. Games were (and still are) extremely expensive. The only way was piracy, and that was completely different from an "all original set", like yours. Nowadays, I have a good "gamer room", with legit copies for my PS3, PS5, and Xbox Series X, and I have an LG C1. I can appreciate it way more when I relive the past like this. Thank you for that Johnny. Nice video... Beautiful memories.
Low latency is the number one reason. Bc unless you have a retrotink or ossc there's going to be multiple frames of lag displaying retro consoles on a fixed-pixel display. Also side by side, the image put out by a CRT is head and shoulders above what many flat panels are capable of especially with low resolution content. There's just no contest. From brightness to color and contrast the image put out by a CRT is just head and shoulders above what lcd, or led tech puts out. The reason they got phased out is because they're heavy and more expensive to manufacture than the flat panel alternatives. Pickup a local CRT, clean it up inside and out, take care of it and I guarantee it will outlive the TV's you buy today.
It randomly dawned on me how happy I am that I'm still listening to your stories while looking at this exact same backdrop over 10 years later lol. Feels like I've seen these shelfs more than the ones in my own house.
I remember back in 2001 getting my Gamecube and going to Sam Goody, Spencer Gifts or Suncoast to get games or Anime. I distinctly remember getting an Evangelion 01 figure at Suncoast. I remember when being into anime meant you had to choose between sub or dub vhs tapes, I always went for sub lol. Good memories. Love the Orange Road shirt Johnny!
It's very cool to see what it all used to look like! I'm super jealous that my wife or I never really documented what our childhood collections looked like! Thank you for sharing!

Anyway, this was a great video Johnny! Happy New Year!
It's so much fun to look back and see what was popular in our past. I love gaming in general but I will say retro gaming is some of my favorite. Fun video thanks 👍
I was like 10-11 back then and still remember hoarding every cent I came across and doing every small job I could find just to go to buy 1 anime VHS maybe every 2 or 3 months. Still have some of them, they just get me in the feels.

Man, I wished I had some pictures of my old room as well back in 2001. That PS2 was my jam but I was still working on Lunar that I just found in my senior year. Tons of media. I had a bookshelf and half my dresser with media (VHS, Tapes, CDs, Game Carts, etc.). Great video. Thanks for the throwback!
I love your videos and how passionate you are about everything you talk about. They make me feel less conscious being 24 (about to be 25) and still loving anime and certain kinds of games when you are around twice my age and still just as into it if not more than you were when you were my age. Loved the Sony Vega TV. I had one myself back in the day, and it was fabulous. Unfortunately, I had to get rid of it during a move due to lack of truck space, which I really regret.
Holy shit this bought back some memories of the old days, great times though.
I always enjoy when you regale us with stories of your gaming past. It's like hearing a good friend tell stories over drinks. Looking at those photos makes me nostalgic for when I started gaming as the Gamecube was my first game console and playing Star Wars The Clone Wars and Wind Waker on it.
I think I'll always do a double take whenever Johnny says, "and my friend Satan". Gets me everytime!
already getting vibes from your "Old Lost Videos Found" video with Rob, from back in that day! What a great nostalgia kick, and a happy new year to you mate!
Makes me wish I took pictures of my old houses I grew up in and my gaming setups.
You are very lucky and blessed to transition from the classics to what we have now.
I love your nostalgia videos. Wish you a FANTASTIC! 2022 😄
Seeing stuff like this reminds me of my own childhood nostalgia. I had a PS1 and a PS2, my sister had an N64 and a GameCube, and we all would still watch VHS movies sometimes too.
That was considered a REALLY good sony 36 inch TV back then. $3000+
Back in the day where wire management was almost impossible to do.
$25-$35 CD's
$40 DVD's
$80 Games even the worst bad ones
Internet so painfully slow that nobody wanted to bother with it.
Videogame downloads didn't exist.
Online shopping was dogshit and people were terrified to use their creditcard online.
Love these kinds of videos. I enjoyed taking this trip down Nostalgia Avenue with you.
I really love these story time type of videos
This is what happens when you don’t do drugs. I had so many great games and consoles but I sold them all for drugs in my early 20s so I have none of them. Don’t do drugs kids
Your game room from that time looked awesome.
Beautiful memories.
love seeing all those old clips!
CRT TVs
Are the way to go with retro games till this day
Explain why
@@devan_danger CRTs are power hogs, though.
So awesome that you have enjoyed gaming and collecting for this long. Great video!
It randomly dawned on me how happy I am that I'm still listening to your stories while looking at this exact same backdrop over 10 years later lol. Feels like I've seen these shelfs more than the ones in my own house.
Great video, thanks for sharing it, the nostalgia is incredible.
Love the Orange Road shirt Johnny!
goodie got it !
It's very cool to see what it all used to look like! I'm super jealous that my wife or I never really documented what our childhood collections looked like! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for sharing with us your stories! Your channel is one of the best on UA-cam, your content is sincere and unpretentious. And i can relate to your gaming/‘90s/anime stories even if we live in different hemispheres! I recommend you to my gaming friends new and old ✨
Also i am playing Ys VIII now, thanks to your recommendation!
That Resident Evil 3 Nemesis cutout and FFX guide made me smile 🥴
I had my first apartment in 2000, and it kinda reminds me of this. The big tv, still watching things on VHS, interior decoration on a budget.
I really appreciate videos like this and it's why I enjoy channels like yours and MyRetroLife. It's cool to see these windows into the past. I'm very regretful that I don't really have any photos or videos from my time growing up/in college - it's all lost. I still have the memories, but those fade a little more every day. Anyway, this was a great video Johnny! Happy New Year!
I love this episode! Thanks for sharing Johnny!
This is golden! Simpler times…
Young Rob is a trip to see.
2001 was an extraordinary year for gaming… feels like forever ago now. Thanks for the trip down memory lane (brought back so many great memories)!
Quite the nostalgia trip
Love to see stuff like this on the channel, brings back a lot of personal memories aswell. Happy new year to you and your family!
It's so much fun to look back and see what was popular in our past. I love gaming in general but I will say retro gaming is some of my favorite. Fun video thanks 👍
Man, watching this episode really brings me back. So great!
It's so hard to describe the feel of that era but if you lived it, you can look back and just know it was something truly special.
I was like 10-11 back then and still remember hoarding every cent I came across and doing every small job I could find just to go to buy 1 anime VHS maybe every 2 or 3 months. Still have some of them, they just get me in the feels.
The good Ol Days....
Theres another channel called
MY Retrolife.
This guys dad captured all his 90s gamming moments that truly are a blast from the past.
'Watch it Buddy!'
So thank you johnny happy 2022!
Damm, ps1-ps2 era!! most epic moment for gaming. That ffX startegy guide is gold!
God makes me feel old and I’m only 25 it’s been 19 years since I got my GameCube and that was my first video game console ever it changed my life I wanted a ps2 but I’m happy with what I had
