He did a great job of figuring out the base of the song and playing through. Another two times he would have been blazing through some fills I'm sure and it would have helped to listen to the actual song in full. All in all I would say he did a great job considering how complex these time signatures are. I could have never figured it out on the first run

Dennis is a drum genius
Dennis blew my mind like 20 years ago.... He was playing with Mike Stern, and He was playing w/ his eyes closed, and blowing bubbles with his bubble gum... while rippin on a drum solo.... All the musicians in the house were like... What The.....🤯 both hands and feet going, and he's blowing bubbles!!!

I counted 5/8, 7/8. I could hear someone deliberately playing 6/8 over this and at the start of the next phrase, the downbeat would still match up. It’s so easy to get lost in the song, with so many different things happening at once in it. Dennis definitely used his funk instincts in staying in the pocket and grooving that out, adding flares wherever his feel led him. So much wisdom in how he approached this. I would’ve definitely missed more than he did here, and the fact that he only lost the beat as few times as he did shows how amazing and experienced he is as a musician. I wish they gave him a few more listens, he would’ve definitely blown through this.
This is great! The time signature was 6 + 7 then 6 + 5 in one section. I couldn't say once Dennis started playing. All of his transitions whether they were timed correctly or not still felt intentional and were played with confidence. I love it!
I have had all too many times where I've shown up and played with other musicians that I have not even heard play. I've literally played songs that I've never heard before let alone rehearsed! As a drummer, I agree that it happens too often. I will say that it pays to listen to everything (all styles)! That way even when you improvise the entire gig the crowd won't be able to tell the difference!

Tool schism is very old track. The drummer from Tool is one of my favourites. It’s amazing you guys have never heard of Tool before ! WOW. One of the best bands ever! “I can’t swim!” 🤩
I don't know if most guys fully appreciate the magnitude of this. Dennis has ZERO formal drumming/music education and doesn't read music. Tool is known for odd times, but it's also the MULTIPLE odd-time sig changes and polyrhythms within their songs that make Carey's drum parts so especially difficult, Lateralus being no exception. To sit down as a career jazz/fusion drummer who has never heard Lateralus, or ANY Tool for that matter, and play it right while making it also FEEL awesome, is a monumental task and a testament to why Dennis will go down in the top 5 GOAT list.

It was great take, and I think what people might not realise is that Dennis probably didn't actually listen to the drumless track all the way through, I got the impression that he quit listening halfway through thinking that the tune probably just repeats the structures he heard so far. So I guess he ran into the actually different figures and structures the first time as a surprise on his playthrough. So considering he had to try to play something on top of something that he experiences on the fly, it was pretty damn impressive
