      Let's get diving again soon man! Us poor grad students gotta make due with the GoPro my brother found in the river and all our makeshift gear! Thanks for saving the day with that awesome sashimi platter man! I really did intend to cook up a feast for ya'll that day, but we had such a good time in the water we ended up leaving Mendo 2 hrs late for mothers day even without the "cooking!" Next time man... I have a feast in mind I want to make for ya'll!

    Whoa, so cool! We have those local foraging "classes", working together with local restaurants and food/veggie providers. Once everything is gathered, the chefs make a very nice dish of the foraged foods and what is provided from other local resources. It sustains the local economy, should be done more often :D

    When I was a kid in Hawaii we lived on Portlock Road which was a road with a lot of houses right on the ocean, and a local radio personality who called himself "J. Akuhead Pupule", known to everyone as Aku, used to drive golf balls into the ocean. We kids used to find them and being kids, we'd cut them open and use the centers as little bouncy balls. We eventually learned Aku would pay us for them, so we made a little pocket money before some bigger kids muscled in on the business.

    Is the long tube for breathing while underwater?

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  2 роки тому +1

      No, it is a float line. There is such a thing as a "hookah rig" that allows one to do that, but requires a motorized pump on the surface, on a boat. In this video however, this is a float line that simply connects my float or dive board to my speargun or abalone iron. I use it mainly to drop the iron in front of caves where there might be a big fish or whatever to mark them while I hit the surface for a breath of air , or if it is attached to my speargun I can spear a big fish and fight a big fish using the float line as a "fishing line".

    Why don’t you kill every purple urchin you see? Aren’t they destroying all the kelp around here?

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  3 роки тому +2

      Good question. It is illegal to destroy wildlife without taking regardless of species. Additionally, purple urchin still have a bag limit (35 per day), however, as I understand it, that limit has increased at least in Humboldt, Mendocino, and Sonoma Counties where the limit is 40 gallons (while diving). Next time maybe we should load up! Finally there is debate that smashing urchins underwater may actually release more sperm and cause more offspring the subsequent year. It is really bad out there... the moment I can rely on some good science and put some plans in action to deal with this urchin overpopulation issue and the resulting die-off of kelp and abalone, I will be sure to share. In the meantime, my thought is DO NOT HARVEST BULLKELP! Unless, of course it washes up on the beach after a storm. The abalone need every bight of food they can get. Thanks for watching.
