    Happy New Year Kevin and Diane. My mouth surely watered watching you eat the native oysters from the rocks fresh and alive, the best way to eat them. Here I am four hours away from the coast but going over there tomorrow as part of my Christmas present. Why you may ask? Hubby is spending $500 on the day to take me to the seaside fish co-op to buy fresh seafood ie. blue swimmer crabs, fresh oysters, clams (if they have any) a nice big snapper to bake at home and some octopus and anything else we may like to eat. I cannot wait lol. I said to hubby that I was taking a lemon with me to eat the oysters as soon as we buy them lol. Diane's soup looked amazing and I love to eat any type of soup but Oriental soup from whatever Asian country are my favs. Looks like an amazing place that you spent the night. Cannot wait until the next video. Michelle - From firey Australia.

      Never have, but Chensi (Fishing Chef) has an awesome video on the subject. I think the trick might be figuring out when the molt (switch to a new shell) so they are soft shelled and not super crunchy.

      Is that the one where he soaks it in alcohol and eats it “raw”?

      We do not get down to So Cal very often. That being said, we do plan on doing some SoCal specific videos in 2020, perhaps in the Santa Barbara area.

    How are you able to ID 90% of everything u encounter in the wild? Did u read lots of books? Any recommendations? I aspire to be half as knowledgeable as you when exploring nature! Amazing video btw.

      Thanks! A life spent outdoors and always a student. I will look through some of the books that I feel are best and most applicable and perhaps will do a little book review as part of a not-so-distant future video.

    Do they get any bigger? I seen these but thought they are too small to harvest.

      Not much bigger. On occasion you will find a large one, but really Washington is the place to go for the big ones!

    Regarding mussels, the thought of eating the whole thing with guts and all isn’t particularly appetizing to me. Is there any way to clean them first so it’s just the meat, or does that defeat the whole purpose of eating fresh mussels?

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  4 роки тому +2

      If you went for really big ones only, you could likely remove the gut and use it for bait or something and just eat the mantle, but there is not much meat there even on the really big ones if you don't eat the gut. Larger clams are a different story however, as they have two large aductor muscles in them, mantle, foot, and neck which are all edible. That might be a better way to go for you. We have several videos on that subject if you are interested.
