    The incredible heartbreak and poignancy of the Sex Pistols’ final
    performance always brings a tear to my eyes. Johnny Rotten threw all his feelings
    - his anger, frustration, his whole heart and soul - into this emotionally powerful,
    naked, raw, performance of "No Fun" at Winterland that night. It was
    a "swan song" that perfectly summed up the end of the Sex Pistols.
    His famous final comment, "ever get the feeling you've
    been cheated?" sums up his disillusionment with being mistreated by the
    Pistols self-proclaimed manager, Malcolm McLaren, the real "rotten"
    one. As John delivered his final line, he smiled, showing his inherent good humor despite
    the pain of knowing it was all falling apart around him (especially with Sid’s
    self-destructive heroin habit). Rotten (Lydon) was (is) a genuine genius if there ever was
    one, the true spirit of punk...love that man!

      @@xyaeiounn oh I don't know about all that, I think he, like many of the first wave punks at this point realized, that it was a farce or had become one, once you package rebellion it's just another, gimmick, sure the DIY spirit carried on but, simple rage had given way to better things, I mean Howard Devoto had already left The Buzzcocks to form the IMO more interesting Magazine, Joy Division was about to change music and John Lydon still had PiL in his future, the Sex Pistols US tour was more of a publicity stunt than anything, really

    • @xyaeiounn
      @xyaeiounn 3 роки тому +2

      @@adamgorsky8422 Well, yeah, that's all cultural moments and stuff. This guy was just the visible tip of a swirling mass of DIY/folk style responses to the shithole that Britain had become at that time. Twenty-foot high stacks of garbage in the street? A small, mobile nation of unemployed, homeless people getting their gatherings destroyed by police? What we, as consumers, refer to as punk was just a small clot of money and celebrity that bobbed up for a minute on the surface of a culture that had seriously started to eat itself even then.
      In that moment, though, he was a skinny kid who ran out of gusto. Hardcore punkers despised that, and ended up having a more strenuous political, musical and ethical style. A wimpy street kid, used as a stooge by a fashion label, was not the precursor to or even an indicator of the idiotic critters to come like GG Allin.

      They perform or possibly recorded as a B-side a better version of this live performance, in my opinion that recording (not this one) is a better version than the original. But then again I always thought Fun House and Raw Power were much better albums. Raw Power is every bit as much as a masterpiece as Nevermind the Bollocks or London Calling.

    • @liquidsnake6879
      @liquidsnake6879 4 роки тому +14

      It was much more about pointing out how the whole thing was no fun for them anymore than it was about any tribute tbh. The song was handpicked for the title and how it related to their situation as for "original punks" Lydon was his own movement, he was not affiliated with any other so called "punks" and you can't bind what he did to anyone else.
      To me the genius of Johnny doesn't even relate to his music, it's more about the emotion he was conveying through it it's hard to explain, but no one really shared it everyone else was a band, the sex pistols were an idea and in fact the sex pistols' breakup came as a result of attempts to turn them into a band and turning their message into vapid commercial garbage. There's a reason why in the early days of PiL Johnny was so against the idea that PiL was a band.

    I can't believe that nobody's talking about Iggy Pop or The Stooges. All three Stooges albums, including No Fun in their self-titled debut, are freaking awesome. The Stooges is truly underrated. They're at least in the top 10 of the world's greatest bands.

    Wow, nobody sounded as amazing as Steve. So-called "critics" are, in the last ten years or so, finally tapping into his greatness. Same with Cookie. Of course, the world has known that John is a genius from Day One. For anyone who didn't think so, all doubts were removed with PiL.

      What you said. Thumbs up. All I can say is Ive loved them since I was 12. Im 48 now. My parents were always heavy into music. They had NMTB in their collection. Along with a lot of other pure gems. Steve was stripped down and basic, as were the others. Just raw simpletude. No music wanking like the other crap many of their contemporaries were spitting out. Ive heard the criticisms. And guess what, notwithstanding orchestral music or some other genres - if its guitar based - simple is better. Its timeless and primeval. Anyway - good comment. And I agree.

    The end of Rock and Roll. All the reigning Top-40 glittering rockstars' decadence demolished-- with merciless, gleeful nihilism, culminating in this exclusive, gruesome, auto-destructive performance encapsulated right here for future generations to ponder. I never understood the point of them getting back together. The Sex Pistols annihilated nostalgia to oblivion! Peace and over and out!

    Sad, poignant, beautiful, repulsive, tragic. It's definitely in the top 10 of rock n roll moments because it encompasses everything that rock n roll is, was and ever will be. Some kids going at 110% from start to finish, changing the world but having no idea in the moment that they're changing it. For everything falling around down around them and just trying to get through a gig , it's a fantastic show from a band that couldn't help but run like a dialed in machine onstage. The rock n roll dream and the rock n roll nightmare for your viewing pleasure. Truly lighting in a bottle.

Ground breaking also by proving that punk, though certainly not arena rock, can atleast make it to be a big sound in the concert halls......
