Jonghyun wrote "Lonely" because he wanted to sing with Taeyeon and tailored the song's composition to her. He said he wanted to take the aura that she has, where she’s a bright and happy person with a sensitive and lonely side as well and put that in the lyrics. He thought of her while he was writing the lyrics and melody It is structured as though Jonghyun and Taeyeon are in conversation with each other I wish you react to live ver. it is so beautiful
jonghyun’s title tracks are amazing and so beautiful but his real masterpieces are hidden in his bsides, diphylleia grayi, let me out and end of a day are absolutely beautiful (esp the lyrics) for some less depressing bsides that are also rllyyyyy amazing songs- take the dive, aurora, and fine are some of my favs
Jonghyun's "Shinin'" is particularly special because it was the last MV that he ever did and it was released about a month after he died in January 2018, after getting permission from his mother to release it posthumously. If you pay attention to the lyrics, you might notice that, as many people have speculated, that he intended this to be his farewell song and it was meant to let everyone know how much he cared about them and loved them. But, as you're starting to discover, Jonghyun has more than 10 years worth of songs both as a member of SHINee and his solo work to check out. He debuted in 2015 as a solo artist and he has at least 4 solo albums that are all self-wrote and composed or co-composed by him. Jonghyun was one of the very first Idols to be known for his songwriting and composing skills and he was the first to have a fully self-wrote album. He was a master when it comes to songwriting and composing. He was highly respected by everyone in the music industry in all aspects of music. This MV and album was supposed to be a continuation of the retro theme leading from SHINee's '90s-themed 1 of 1 album, which came out right before Jonghyun's solo album was set to drop. However, he died right before the album and this MV was set to be released. So this was his final gift to fans. Many think this final release was planned by Jonghyun as his final goodbye. As he says over and over again in the song, "I will always be with you ..." We see him in this MV as a radio DJ because most believe this was a nod to his time as a host and a DJ of "Blue Night," which was a daily radio program he hosted for 3 years. He actually decided to quit doing the radio program in part because he was heading into a very busy schedule with this solo comeback, a solo concert tour and plans for SHINee's 10th anniversary, etc. Jonghyun loved hosting his radio program and he was really sad to have to give it up. He had one of the most popular late night radio shows at the time. He was such a great DJ and host. If you ever want to see him on his show, all you have to do is search UA-cam for "Jonghyun Blue Night" radio. There are clips and even whole episodes of the program you can watch. He had the perfect voice and personality to be a radio DJ and host.
Most of my favourite Jonghyun songs are b-sides. His album "She Is" is one of my favourite albums of all time. The songs Moon and Cocktail from that album are known to be very amazing.
One thing I strongly disagree with though gotta say, which SHINee songs you have in mind when you say Jonghyun's voice doesn't fit them? I don't know any of such songs... Having Jonghyun's vocals is a luxury, he's the one doing most of the ad-libs, the craziest high notes, the runs. Most old SHINee songs would never be the same without his voice. I'm sure all real Shawols would do a lot to hear his voice again on their new tracks, I definitely would. OT5 music will always be superior...
Thanks for reacting! Jonghyun's solo music is elite, he's ac my favourite solo artist from SHINee (closely followed by Taem!). Almost all of his stuff is self written and produced (he was the first SM idol with a self written solo album). Jjong is still one of the best vocalists i've heard in Kpop, and I think his understanding and playfulness with music, his voice, the production is really shown off in his solo work 👑💎 I hope you check out more from him, I recommend anything from the She Is album - Moon (AMAZING) Orbit, Aurora are my favourites. End of a Day is gorgeously pretty and healing, the live performance (on yt) has phenomenal vocals! I appreciate the 'in honour of', but also lets just normalise listening to Jjong's work because it's incredible and still slaps today, not just bc he's gone😚
@@valenandtheo Thank you for reacting to Jonghyun in December, maybe you can also react to more of his b-sides like the ones recommended by people in the comment section on his Birthday 8 april☺.
Thank you for checking out Jonghyun's music! Sharing and listening to it is the best way to keep him alive. I love all of the songs you picked pretty much equally, but I love all of his discography for that matter. Regardless of the song, Jonghyun would always make it unique, interesting and very authentic to him just with the way he sings, his delicate and deep lyricism, and his overall artistry. I think a lot of his experimentation is coded in the dozen vocal tones and techniques that he does. The different vocal placements sometimes had him sound like multiple people singing the same song, he'd always sound different and that's what sets him apart from others as not many people have the vocal capabilities nor the sheer boldness to even attempt what he did. As far as musical genres and production, most of his experimental and unique songs are hidden in his albums. The title tracks were usually safer with a little bit more mass appeal, because an average Jonghyun track is pretty niche. I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun diving deeper into his discography.
"Lonely" is such a hauntingly beautiful song that really showcases what made Jonghyun such a master as a singer, songwriter and composer. He was such a beautiful human being. This really isn't a love song, exactly. I would categorize "Lonely" as a breakup song or a song about longing to be together, but it could never actually happen. This song is such a melancholy, sad song, I wouldn't say it's cute. The lyrics are about being heartbroken. (You should look up the lyrics of the song, so you can understand the meaning better.) If you count the marks drawn on Jonghyun's arms, by the end of this MV he has 27 marks which, as part of the story in the song, seems to represent that these are the number of moments, days, weeks, years, etc. that he has felt lonely since their relationship ended. However, some also thing each line on his arm could stand for every year of Jonghyun's life that he has felt lonely. What makes this MV even more sad is that he was 27 years old (Korean age) when he recorded this MV so he was essentially saying that there has been a part of him that has always felt lonely from the moment he was born. Although, in interviews, Jonghyun said it was only a coincidence that the number of lines happened to be the same number as his age. But, I still think this was more intentional than he felt comfortable admitting to the general public. At this point most fans knew that Jonghyun suffered from depression and often struggled to see how much good he had in his life, but most never realized how true to real life this song and MV really was until more than 7 years ago now when he lost the fight and could no longer overcome that lonely feeling anymore. And that's why this song has become one of his most sad and powerful songs, because it represents so much more than we even knew at the time. Watching this MV now, many have wished we would have paid more attention during this time and maybe taken the message within this MV and song more seriously, but we know all this now because of hindsight and we can't turn back time. However, we might be able to use Jonghyun's legacy and his amazing light that he has left behind to make a difference in the world. Yes, the featured singer is Taeyeon, the leader and main vocalist of Girls' Generation. I think it was actually a good choice artistically that Taeyeon wasn't actually seen in the MV because the song is about being lonely and longing for a love who is no longer there. If Jonghyun and her were both singing to each other in the MV, it would have lost some of that lonely symbolism. Taeyeon and Jonghyun were really close, almost like siblings. They were best friends and they adored each other. Jonghyun wrote "Lonely" with Taeyeon in mind as the featured singer. He said he thought Taeyeon would be able to understand the feeling of being lonely despite the fact that she is a celebrity who is admired and loved by so many people, just like the way he felt when he wrote the song. Taeyeon is really close with all the members of SHINee. She has also collaborated with Key, as seen in his "Hate That ..." MV and with Taemin in his B-side song "If I Could Tell You," which is on Taemin's Advice album. We're just waiting for her collab with Onew and with Minho, hopefully in the near future. You did well Jonghyun, our angel and diamond in the sky.
No matter how good MV is, any live performance adds at least 50% charisma. Although this is the case with all SHINEEs, I really appreciated Jonghyun during live performances much more .
Jonghyun's vocals were great in the MV for "Crazy (Guilty Pleasure)," but just wait until you see him perform it live, you will understand what we mean when we say SHINee live is on a whole other level. :D What I love about his live performances is that he even covers the rap parts himself. Like all of Jonghyun's solo songs, "Crazy (Guilty Pleasure)" -- which was his solo debut on his Base album in 2015 -- was wrote by him, so the whole vibe of this song was designed by him. And that is why he was so highly respected as a singer/songwriter and why he was one of the first and very few Idols to really be considered a true songwriter and composer. He was a genius when it came to making music and he chose very carefully which songs he wanted to release himself and what kind of message he wanted to give. He never released music just because he thought it would be a hit, but everything he did was meticulously planned and designed by him to make an impact regardless of whether it would be a hit from the the moment it was released. All his music had a deeper message. He was a true artist in all aspects of the music industry. For example, the image of the stairs in the MV is meant to remind us of the famous "Relativity" drawing and sculpture, etc. by M.C. Escher. It's a very famous image and is used as a symbolic metaphor in the song. It depicts a world in which the normal laws of gravity do not apply. Or in Jonghyun's case, a "Crazy" world where the normal rules with love are turned on its head, which is why he allows himself to give in to his "Guilty Pleasure." The spider I interpret as a black widow and it was meant to represent how she is controlling him and driving him crazy. He is stuck in her beautiful web, etc. She is his guilty pleasure. On a side note: Jonghyun was pretty much ripped like that since debut. As you are starting to realized, all the members of SHINee have amazing bodies. When you think about it, they all have to be that fit in order to be able to do all that they do -- to be able to sing live and sound flawless while performing the choreography that they do, and to do it for hours straight, makes it so they are required to stay in shape. SHINee are known for the fact that they always sing live, so they have to be in top condition in order to dance like they do while maintaining stable vocals the whole time. That is why in concert they can perform really intense choreography for 4 or 5 songs in a row while singing live and continue to sound even better than their studio recordings from beginning to end, and then hold a conversation with the audience imminently after and still not look or sound out of breath. You did well Jonghyun, you will forever be the best poet/artist, with a beautiful spirit that we were privileged to have a chance to get to know. The featured rapper who is part of Jonghyun's studio version of "Crazy (Guilty Pleasure)" is named Iron, who, at the time, was a popular newer artist who became famous as a contestant on the Korean rap completion show called Show Me the Money. So, being featured in Jonghyun's song was sort of his big break in the industry. But Iron got into some serious trouble with the law after first being caught with drugs and was suspended from the industry not long after working on this MV. This is about the only time you will see Iron in anything, and other than releasing his first and only album about a year after this, his legal troubles only got worse and his career ended.
I'm always very happy when I find new reactions of him. JongHyun was and still is an inspiration! Please, react to "End of a day" (live) and "Please don't go" (live feat Onew), I guarantee you will love it!
Wow thank you for this reaction ❤ Jonghyun is my bias in Shinee and i like him A LOT Please, react to his solo albums, it worth all the hype, especially album "She is"
When I heard the song Lonely, I had tears in my eyes. 🥺 Jonghyun has so many songs that make me sad and want to cry. Sorry, diphylleia grayi, the end of the day, hallelujah. These songs make me cry. Jonghyun suffered from depression and the song Let me out was a cry for help and it's sad that no one noticed. I can't listen to this song 😢 The song Elevator also breaks my heart 💔 I really want you to react to the song y si fuera ella. This song shows what a great talent this world has lost 🥺 As for SHINee, I want you to listen to the song from now on . This song was sung by Taemin Onew Key and Minho just a few days after Jonghyun's death and I warn you, if you listen to it, you won't be able to stop crying. This is the saddest K-pop performance. It's been so many years and I still can't watch it 😭 What hurts me the most is when there are 5 microphones on stage, everyone stands at their own, and when Jonghyun's part starts, the light falls on his empty place at the microphone and you can hear his voice, that's the most painful moment. 😭 (My english is bad. So sorry)
Pensé que ya lo había superado pero sigo llorando cuando escucho sus canciones, su voz, sus videos, lo extraño tanto, quiero volver a tener 12 años y ser la niña que acaba conoce a su grupo favorito (SHINee) 😢

White t-shirt and moon are great as well!

@bluecherry1011 Oh absolutely, Suit Up is also a masterpiece
Thank you for checking out Jonghyun, it always makes me happy to see reaction videos to him, appreciating the hard work that he did.
I am shocked no one mentioned city hunter ost sang by him the title called "so goodbye" this song just make me cry

It was more because he passed away in December.
@@valenandtheo Of course! I genuinely didn't mean for that to be read into in any bad way, I'm sorry if it came across wrong!

That was indeed Taeyeon. Taeyeon collects SHINee collabs, she already has Jonghyun, Key and Taemin, she's only missing Onew and Minho.
