I only learned of Shinee (like you) from this episode of Palette...but then found myself exploring them further. If you recall IU's three friends (subject of her song 'Eight') who were lost too soon...one of those was Jonghyun of Shinee. They still refer to themselves as a five member group today and leave his place open during live performances. He and IU were very close. Jonghyun was known to compose and write lyrics also, and his first such song released was IU's 'Gloomy Clock' (he composed and wrote lyrics for in 2013) - which opened more opportunities for him. Dear Name was a very meaningful song for Shinee to perform (check the lyrics and you'll understand) - as many Shinee fans commented on after this Palette episode. All of this somber history aside...as a group, they are incredibly talented, and all the members seem to be immensely likable wherever I've seen them. Key is super funny. Sherlock live performances and MV, and Don't Call Me MV are really something... You'll understand why other idols look up to them so much.
Small correction - Jonghyun was writing songs long before Gloomy Clock, his first credit was writing Shinee's title track "Juliette" in 2009 at only 19 years old! He regularly contributed to the lyric-making and composition of Shinee songs throughout his career, as well as frequently writing/composing for other artists (a few notable tracks being "Breathe" by Lee Hi, "Playboy" by EXO, and "Pretty Boy" by Taemin ft. Kai from EXO) ☺ He was also the first SM idol to ever be given full creative power over an album when he fully self-produced his solo album, "She Is." He was truly an irreplaceable talent!
@@LoveNatalieLove he had credits for lyrics previously (including Juliette) - but even in his wikipedia page, the first song where he had composer credit was Gloomy Clock. I think the other tracks you reference come after that release. Regardless...completely agree with your broader point that he was very exceptional and loved by so many, and it's so very sad that he is no longer with us.

❤ SHINee Vocals and perfromers! This “Dear Name” performance is so special. Gets me every time 🥹 Others will share why this is seen as such a precious moment for all of them.
SHINee's version of "Dear Name" is different than IU's original version, so if you haven't heard the original version I encourage you to check it out. You should also look up the lyrics for the song, because if you understand the lyrics you will discover why this song is so meaningful to everyone -- SHINee's version of the song is dedicated to Jonghyun, who is SHINee's main vocalist that passed away 3 years prior to their appearance on the show. (The 7th anniversary of his death just past last week.) So the "Dear Name" they are talking about is Jonghyun. (If you have never read the English translation of the lyrics for this song -- there is a clip of SHINee's performance with English subs -- I encourage you to rewatch it with lyrics.) Yes, SHINee were on IU's show in February 2021. It had been 3 years since their last comeback because Onew, Key and Minho had just been discharged from the military and following this comeback Taemin would be enlisting. However, overall SHINee is known for being very active in the music industry with multiple comebacks, both as a group and as solo artists, every year since debut, as well as holding regular concert tours, etc. So it's unusual to not have a comeback from them in such a long time. Fun fact: IU's song "Gloomy Clock -- which features Jonghyun -- was wrote by Jonghyun. (Jonghyun was one of the very first Kpop stars to be recognized for his songwriting and composing skills and he wrote more than 70 songs and composed and or co-composed a large majority of them as well in his short 10 year career. He was also one of the first idols to ever write songs for other artists.) Jonghyun and IU were really good friends and when she heard "Gloomy Clock" she asked him to give it to her. Jonghyun was originally thinking of the song for himself, but he said that after hearing IU sing "Gloomy Clock" he knew the song was meant for her, and in hindsight he thinks he might have subconsciously wrote the song with her in mind. Because IU and Jonghyun were so close, she knows the deep meaning "Dear Name's" lyrics have for all of them, so she was surprised that out of all of her songs, this was the one SHINee chose to sing -- they could have chosen any one of her dozens of songs -- that is why I think she was so still and quiet during their performance and didn't really look at them, because it was super emotional for all of them and she didn't want to cause herself or any of SHINee members to break down if they made eye contact. "Kind" is a fan tribute song and it is dedicated to SHINee World, or Shawols for short (SHINee's fans). It's all about the relationship SHINee has with their fans. They are saying thank you for always staying by my side and supporting and loving me for the past 13 years (Now 16 years). "For all those times I felt your support, we members have also tried to give you love and support right back." The relationship SHINee has with Shawols is one of mutual respect and love and the fans are part of their family. As the lyrics of the song say, "You've always been so Kind," which I interpret as a direct message to Shawols. To help you get to know the SHINee members, the order you see the members sitting in, is the order that they always sit or stand in since debut days. They will always sit with Onew on the left, Taemin next to him, (Jonghyun in the middle,) Minho next and Key on the right. Even their starting positions in their choreography will often have them standing in this order. You almost never see them in interviews or in press photos, not in that order. (When SHINee debuted Onew and Jonghyun were 18, Key and Minho were 16 and Taemin was only 14. Therefore, now after more than 16 years in the industry, Onew is currently 35, Key and Minho are 32 and Taemin is 31 and they are still one of the most popular groups, who are also all highly-respected solo artists. And they are all still very much active in the music and entertainment industry.) SHINee are known for their ballads and for their amazing harmonies, that is why they are so respected by everyone. (Literally they are the idols of other idols and legends even among legends. Almost everyone in the Kpop industry is a fan of SHINee and most will cite the group or one of the members as the reason why they dreamed of becoming a singer and/or dancer.)Their live vocals are unmatched and everyone idolizes them for the amount of talent they have. They are some of the best vocalists in the industry. And just think, Minho is the main rapper of the group. How often do you see a rapper that can sing as well as him? And notice how Onew doesn't even have his in-ear monitors in, so he is only relying on his voice to make sure he hits the right notes -- he actually says it's easier for him to sing when not wearing them. Onew is very humble and modest -- hence why his stage name is Onew. In Korean Onew (pronounced Oh-New in English or On-New with a Korean accent) sounds like the Korean words for calm and gentle, etc., which is why SM gave him that name because it fit his personality well. His real name is Lee JinKi. Onew is considered one of the premiere vocalists in the industry who is known for being the male vocalist with the most consistent vocals. He is one of the male vocalists that vocal coaches use as an example of what people should try to emulate in order to become a great singer. He has been one of SHINee's main vocalists since debut and he is recognized as one of the top vocalists in Kpop since even before debut. Onew was only one of two people ever personally cast by Lee SooMan, the founder of SM, and he was chosen at age 16 for his outstanding vocal ability. Even as rookies, SHINee's main vocalists -- Onew and Jonghyun -- were mentors and vocal coaches to a lot of other singers and trainees, including several members of EXO. (EXO may be considered "Vocal Kings," but SHINee are the original Vocal Kings. Which just goes to show you why they are both SM groups.) The ONLY thing SHINee is not good at is lip syncing, so they have specifically trained since their debut, to build stamina and endurance, in order to be able to sing live for 3+ hours straight, all while performing intense choreography. When people watch a live performance they are often shocked, because SHINee sounds so perfect live even though they are dancing so intensely, but that is why they are so impressive. Therefore, when you hear SHINee sing, 95% of the time it will be live. Other Idols and audio sound technicians, etc. who have witnessed SHINee performing live are always blown away, because in the parts of the song where most singers would take a break and rely on the backing track vocals to cover their voices so they can catch their breath and recover, this is where the SHINee members actually ramp it up and become their most powerful. Therefore, in their live performances SHINee sounds even better than in the recorded version. That's why, as IU mentioned, even as rookies, senior artists would stop what they were doing to watch SHINee's (dry run) rehearsals on music programs because SHINee's vocal talent is that impressive. What's significant about people coming to see SHINee's rehearsal before the show even started was that normally a group will run though their performance before getting their hair and makeup done and they will usually wear just their regular clothes, because the rehearsal is just them in the studio with no audience. But so many people wanted to see SHINee's rehearsals that the members would have to show up even earlier to have their hair and makeup done and get dressed in their stage outfits in order to look "presentable" because the preshow had just as many people watching as the live performance. LOL When SHINee debuted, they were the first group to demonstrate how it was possible to sing live while performing complex choreography and still maintain stable vocals. Before SHINee, the thought within the industry was that it wasn't possible to sing live and also perform high intensity choreography at the same time. At that time, most groups would either sing live and have simple choreography, or they would have crazy cool choreography, but lip sync to their recorded vocals. SHINee completely changed the Kpop industry and upped the standard of what it meant to be an idol singer. And they did it all as teenagers, quickly became recognized and respected for their talent even though the members were some of the youngest idols to debut at the time. Which makes their talent and mastery as a singer and performer that much more impressive. Yes, SHINee are very much known for their dancing. Taemin is literally considered the best dancer in all of Kpop, and that's not just a fan's opinion, but its a title that has been given to him by his peers and industry experts. And SHINee as a whole is one of the most well-rounded groups to ever exist. SHINee was also the very first Kpop group to release their dance practice videos to the public and they are the reason why Kpop groups and artists create dance practice videos today. SHINee's whole concept is that they are an experimental contemporary group. Therefore, they are expected to come up with something that no one has ever seen or heard before with every release of theirs, even still today. They are known as the trendsetters of the industry, and everyone looks to SHINee to show them what the next song style and dance trend will be. There is almost nothing within the Kpop industry that SHINee hasn't had a hand in creating. When SHINee has a comeback the entire industry pays attention. SHINee live is unmatched. It's literally referred to as the SHINee standard. It's the standard that all other groups strive to reach, and SHINee are the vocalists that all other artists try to emulate. SM really hit gold when they formed this group, and I don't think it can ever be duplicated in the same way again.
Taemin's voice may be delicate here, but it is VERY powerful as well. To see what I mean, check out this performance of "Soldier" + "Rise": ua-cam.com/video/cpAPy0tjVJ0/v-deo.html . Seriously, he's quite the beast live as you can see at this recent awards show performance where he won 3 major awards: ua-cam.com/video/uaVM5dwi_4E/v-deo.html (fanmade) Delicate isn't the adjective I would use for these. 😁 Seriously, all the brothers are also excellent soloists, however Taemin, although the youngest, was chosen as SM's very first male soloist from an active boy group in 2014 at just 21 YO. When he debuted with SHINee, he was just 14. He's now 31. Key would be the most prolific, and he's just as bold. Onew's the calm one and Minho can get a little racy, I would say. Jonghyun was just power all the time. He was probably the most powerful Kpop singer of his time, with Onew second. SHINee is and forever will be a 5-brother group. Unfortunately, we lost our precious Jonghyun in December, 2017. It was a very tragic time for us, as fans, and devastating for SHINee. This is why they decided, despite scathing criticism from media outlets, to go ahead with their planned concert so that we could all grieve together as well as commemorate Jonghyun's legacy. The concert was just a few months after the incident, and the media claimed SHINee was doing it to exploit the tragedy. Nothing could have been further from the truth, as you will see if you watch the concert online. There were lots of tears, lots of laughter, and shared memories. They also pledged to stay together to keep Jonghyun's dream of SHINee forever alive. At that concert, Onew (pronounced "On-you") stated that SHINee will forever be 5HINee. After almost 17 years together, they are all extremely close and consider each other family. Even their families attend events and concerts together. As a group, they are known as the "Princes of Kpop" due to their phenomenal live performances (terrific live singing, beautiful harmonies, and explosive dancing). They have done just about every genre of music during their career and even invented a few by combining several genres into one song. They produced the very first hybrid song in Kpop history with "Sherlock" in 2012, which combined their songs, "Clue" and "Note". SHINee also started the most trends in Kpop which have continued through today, making them one of the most influential groups in the industry. Do you like dance practices? Thank SHINee for their DP of "Lucifer" in 2010 which made it almost mandatory to do DPs going forward. They even took center stage with introducing new fashion trends, especially with the "skinny jeans" phase in Kpop. Seriously, there are so many trends that it would take too much space to list them all. You can see a video about the main ones here: ua-cam.com/video/bb80xyEHEoQ/v-deo.html Lastly, as the vocal powerhouses they are, SHINee also influenced many other groups. For instance, they mentored both EXO and NCT. Even the manager of BTS told them to watch SHINee as examples, as told by Suga during his "Suchwita" episode that had Taemin as a guest. So yes, SHINee is a big deal in Kpop. They are extremely respected across company lines and are known as the kindest group with the most brotherly love out there. Their fans are very loyal and we have a special bond with them. Heck, they even perform car concerts for us as they're traveling together: ua-cam.com/video/NFEijOG7u1U/v-deo.html (beginning @ 4:53) 🤣
Thank you so much for sharing! It might take a bit as we have some other groups on the waiting list right now, but I'd love to check out more from them!
To understand what makes IU's version of "Sherlock" so special you should now check out SHINee's original version of "Sherlock (Clue & Note)." SHINee's version is super iconic and one of their many very popular songs. IU's version is also very different from the original. If you have ever watched Idol groups doing song covers or any Idol trainee survival reality shows, then you probably have heard them cover at least one of SHINee's songs, that's how much influence the group has on the Kpop industry. Literally, SHINee has a whole lineup of songs that are almost a requirement for all trainees and rookie Kpop artists to know and learn, and if you name almost any Kpop group or artist, I can almost guarantee that they have covered one or more of SHINee's songs at least once in their career.
❤Omg it’s SHINee💎 I recommend the following songs 😊: replay, Don’t call me, view, juice, married to the music, Atlantis, 1 of 1, why so serious , Sherlock, tell me what to do, everybody, selene 6.23, many more…. Love the live version of Sherlock at the Tokyo Dome with the white suits Key designed. If i remember correctly, Michael Jackson's choreographer made the choreo and SM never revealed how much they paid for it. Love when Obama mentioned Shinee. If you watched the show Lucifer, they used Shinee's Lucifer song in the fight scene. Bebe Rexha was one of the writers of Lucifer. Suggest watching Shinee the princes of kpop.
You heard 'Don't Call Me' recently through Queendom Puzzle, it was part of the Remix battle in episode 4 I think, performed by Miru, Wooyeon, Yeoreum, Yeeun, and Zoa!
PLEASE, please, please MORE SHINee!!! I don't know were to start any suggestions, because all their dischography is so great, ever since their debute in 2008 (just teenages, Taemin 14 years old, Key and Minho 16, Jonghyun and Onew 18) . They have the most vast dischography in the industry, but they are also known for impressive excecution of choreography, not to mention their live vocals and concerts being unmatched- said by critics, not just me being biased. They have all impressive solo career in they own right, but together they make magic! Still active after 16 years, THAT is impressive by itself in that industry. Taemin is the only one who did Killing voice, though! Anyone who doesn't know SHINee, are missing out greatness, being it in talent, stage performances, vocals, choreo, originality (they are the ONE that stands out in this immense industry)....Ace of aces, and the edge of kpop! Yet to me, what really makes them stand out, is that despite their popularity, talent and what not; they never takes for granted anything, always deliver 1000 %, always humble and down to earth, caring and not at least funny and chill. They are also loved by staff and back up dancers, and just overall makes people comfortable around them. Hence, they are a favorite to be invited to reality and/or variety shows ect...
No, unfortunately, from the guys only Taemin was on "killing voice". I hope they fix this and take part next year. Although they are currently very busy with solo works.Which, by the way, are also gorgeous. Onew pronounced as O-new. Thanks for Shinee reaction.

(EXO may be considered "Vocal Kings," but SHINee are the original Vocal Kings. Which just goes to show you why they are both SM groups.)
The ONLY thing SHINee is not good at is lip syncing, so they have specifically trained since their debut, to build stamina and endurance, in order to be able to sing live for 3+ hours straight, all while performing intense choreography.
LOL
When SHINee debuted, they were the first group to demonstrate how it was possible to sing live while performing complex choreography and still maintain stable vocals.
-Taemin has a killing voice. SHINee is my favorite kpop group they’re incredibly talented. It’s pronounced
oh-new
Taemin's voice may be delicate here, but it is VERY powerful as well.
You can see a video about the main ones here: ua-cam.com/video/bb80xyEHEoQ/v-deo.html
Lastly, as the vocal powerhouses they are, SHINee also influenced many other groups.
It might take a bit as we have some other groups on the waiting list right now, but I'd love to check out more from them!
if you love iu's style, you will love shinee.
Oooh that's high praise!
Ohh SHINee lets goooo
It was a very nice first exposure to them!
Shinee are great vocalist they are IU's friends because of Jonghyun❤❤💜...Uaena here, please do feature shinee they are super talented🫶
Live performance: ring ding dong & Lucifer remix from SWC5 concert ( must watch) ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The Princes of Kpop
Loved watching you discover shinee ☺️!
All five incredible vocalists. For me, Jonghyun is my favourite vocalist and human ❤️ please do check out his music if you can
(Plus, all stream profits go to the Shiny Foundation charity his mum and sister set up for supporting artists mental health, too ☺️)
They have a very strong first impression! We have quite a backlog of deep dives, but I look forward to when we can get to them!
That’s where I know it from!! Thank you ☺️
So glad you’ve discovered SHINee!! 😭 Please check out more of their live performances ❤
And in this way Shinee came in Your life!😊💙
IU's hold my hand is part of the ost for the best drama ever The Greatest Love...
yay SHINee!!!!
No, unfortunately, from the guys only Taemin was on "killing voice". I hope they fix this and take part next year. Although they are currently very busy with solo works.Which, by the way, are also gorgeous.
Onew pronounced as O-new.
