Bodyman with 30 years experience here. Some tips for plastic bumper repair. First, welding is not the best repair method for any situation, for an amateur. I suspect that the rod is not the same plastic as the bumper. JB Weld is too rigid for that application and is very likely to crack. A semi-rigid plastic repair epoxy, which would be available from any body repair supplies jobber would be the best solution. I use Dominion Sure Seal but it may be Canadian only. Grind the inside, apply 2 layers of fiberglass drywall tape, semi rigid epoxy, with the tape embedded. Make sure that your repair extends at least 3 inches on either side of the crack. Grind outside, apply semi rigid epoxy, sand smooth, prime, paint.
If you're interested in getting the lower quarter panel closer to the proper shape, try taking out the back seat, inner trim panel. You might have access from the inside. I'm not sure if you will or not since I'm not familiar with the car, but it's worth a shot, because as with ALL fillers less is better. My max would be 1/16 but my standards aren't yours. it
^^^ THIS - I was about to write pretty much the same thing as this guy. That plastic weld is NOT going to stick to your bumper long-term, because it's a different kind of plastic. You need the same kind of plastic, and more importantly the same flexibility as the existing plastic. This is also why the J-B Weld is going to crack and break free.
It might look and paint up nice, but as soon as you have some cold/hot temperature fluctuations and/or big bumps, that bumper is going to split open again like an egg.
Thanks for typing what i was going to! 😁👌
We've been repairing plastic bumper covers since 1981. It's all we do, and we make plastic welders. Plastic welding can repair pieces that 2-parts can't fix.
@@polyvance I've done both, do both, am an expert in ALL aspects of bodywork. If you're the expert you claim to be you should agree that welding plastics successfully for an amateur with the equipment he has just isn't going to happen. I gave him a method he can use with materials available cheaply. I did forget to mention that depending on the plastic he may need a can of polyolefin adhesion promoter. I've used my suggested method on literally thousands of bumper covers with ZERO problems. There are many ways to defur a feline my friend, and I know most of them.
@@ericsherwood7423 - I agree. The equipment he used made me cringe as I watched it.
Thank you Samcrac for showing your trials and errors, and doing these jobs with affordable tools that most people can get their hands on.
he protecc,
he attacc,
but most importantly, he fills cracc
and your joke is wacc
That cracs my 💓 in a good way
The he protecc he attacc thing is just fuckin dumb
@J Blob You’re fucking dumb.
OOF
C’mon people he’s doing it his way and he’s learning on the way. He’s not ‘flipping’ every car so he’s not worried about someone else’s critiques or how much profit he could lose. He’s never claimed to be a mechanic, painter, or a 5 star auto body shop that churns out impeccable work for the masses. What he’s shown is how to get great f’n deals through auctions and along with some expected harshly learned lessons, anyone can turn their deal into a steal. The evolution if this mans channel gives anyone the template on how to organize/setup their own auto repair channel. But also on marketing yourself/channel to larger companies for money or products that you get to keep!
1. Anyone can make money reselling these auction vehicles. Also can ind cars for themselves that typically may not be financially possible.
2. How to run a youtube auto-repair channel and lessons learned for the DIY peeps.
3. Marketing channel to get free products from ads & possible income.
Great work and I respect your determination on getting as much work as possible done yourself Sam. Keep them coming.
I love it when I get a Domino's ad on your channel. :D
or a dollar shave club and Sam with a beard.
Domino's missed a good marketing opportunity with Sam crac. I'm in a marketing class now and most businesses would pay him to do that kind of work.
I got a car add in Spanish at the end haha, but yes dominos is funny given the obvious.
Watching 14 minutes of your video feels like 2 minute LoL
Right.. its never long enough lol..
never long enough. to enjoyable.
Exactly! First time on UA-cam I feel a channel's videos are too short lol.
Great script on the dollar shave ad. Thanks dollar shave for supporting this channel and letting Sam give us great free entertainment.
Thanks very much for your support Bebe
I agree wicked happy they work with him this way he can focus on the cars and deliver us great content.. ps i know im not pewdiepie lol hes on of my fav you tubers lol not trying to pretend to be him guys
They should support u more so u can start the focus Rs or did u realise it was too big a job for u
I'm not jealous of the bumper or jealous of the cars you own. What I am jealous of is the Sun and the fact you can wear a t-shirt and shorts. God damn it's effing freezing right now in the UK. You lucky so and so
The offset insert had me dying😂😂😂👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
*takeoff
The way you made a tool to assist the pull 💯😤💪🏾 & cant wait till the next vid
Sam: Your idiocy makes the best and most genius clip on YT. Unlike others that pretend to start a project and pass it to someone behind the camera, you do show all the things that goes wrong in a real hand and with a layman (I can confirm this as I've done every one of those before) and show them at best. Way to go and YOU RE THE MAN.
Your videos really are the best. Nothing else like them on UA-cam. Great cars & great content
MidknightS0N ➡️ Sam crac is good I like his videos ., he falls in the list of best in UA-cam . But Goonzquad holds the number one spot . Check them out you won’t be disappointed.

Cleetus McFarland hands down
Nice work Mr. Crac. Your skills and your tools have drastically improved over the last year. Pleasure to watch.
Thanks!
I really enjoy your channel. I have learned a lot from watching. Also, I enjoy the fact that you show your mistakes. It's the best way to learn.
Like going to harbor freight to use coupons.
Knick knack Samuel Crac, he's bought an auctioned car.
The frame crack is fixed, the exhaust is armytrix.
Now he keeps it in a barn.
Great timing, I always eat when I watch your uploads. :D
I heard you’re doing a Dollar Shave Club commercial that’s airing during the super bowl.
As long as it's not a Gilette ad.
@@herbiehusker1889 triggered haha
@@biggary9602 not triggered at all. I'm just glad that Samcrac hasn't debased himself by showing up in an ad telling us how all men are toxic.
@@herbiehusker1889 no it didn't. Why make stuff about you unless it was about you
It's so satisfying pushing yourself a little and accomplishing things you would normally send out to be done, good work Sam
Fill the large part of the dent with the green fibreglass and use a large surform rasp to reshape the fibreglass. After you reshape it with the rasp hit it with some 60 grit to knock down the rasp marks then hit it with some filler to feather it out and you should be good. Also, if you don't already know a good 2k high build primer acts like a skim coat of filler and really helps to feather out all of the repairs and imperfections
Anti Deep State i bet if he will follow your suggestion. Using fiberglass filler is way better than bondo. But knowing Mr.Crac he will take it negatively and do his own way and try to reason out it is much better. Although he is not good in doing this kind of diy. ✌️ always blame the tools he is using although he wants to buy cheap tools for diy.
Someone should confiscate that welder. Lol. I think vice grips may be galvanised or something similar so be carful welding it because it not only looks bad it gives of toxic gases.
Welding galvanised metal isn't something to worry about it just gives you flu like symptoms for a couple of hours, old wives tale says drink a pint of milk will stop galvie flu.
I would use a fiberglass fill for the rocker panel. Fiber glass fill doesn’t hold moisture like regular body filler does so it won’t rust and is a bit stronger as well because of the fiberglass strands. For a rocker panel that could see plenty of rocks, pebbles, and other road debris kicking up, a stronger fiberglass filler would be a much better idea!
Great work Sam. Looking forward to seeing the front end put back together.
jb weld is brittle, on a flexible bumper it will crack.
Sam, thanks for the reminder about using a block when sanding prepping for paint. Going to be painting my truck within the next few weeks. It’s been about 10yrs since I painted a vehicle & I almost forgot this critical tool!👍
You should put serious thought in a 4 post car lift would help you out so much in some positions you're in and you're not getting any younger and I'm sure your store from rolling around under the core just saying
One day Tommy
@@Samcrac Just don't buy it at Harbor Freight ...
Hmmmm ... you went from Unshaved, to Shaved, to Unshaved again pretty quickly there Sam. I love this Porsche Project
Sam you need a bigger slide hammer for that area of the car. The metal is really strong down there. I like the vise grip idea. I’ve had one of those for years. Works great. Keep up the good work. It’s fun watching people figure this stuff out. No one is born knowing this stuff. We’ve all got to learn the process.
Let's all be honest, whether you like the way Mr. Crac did this repair or not, he is still better than a good third of the actual shops in the US.
What's good, Cracman!
fiberglass bondo is the best way to go
The JBWeld was a strange choice
Hey Sam I love the fearlessness you exhibit tackling these projects! You may already watch her, but SarahNTuned is working on a Toyota MR2 with a lot of paint and body work videos, she also has a portable lift that fits in her garage for better access and safer working under her cars.
Thank you for screwing up I do love it now now you make me feel better. This is a 70-year-old man that used to love to work on cars
Make more videos Sam I’m literally sat here waiting for your next one, really enjoyable watching from here in the cold South west of the UK!! 🤟
Next time, just remove the adjustment screw on the vise-grip, add a length of threaded rod the same size as pitch as the adjustment bolt. Add the hammer part, and double nut the end. Provided you don't have the means to make one on a lathe, which is how I made my own slide hammers. Sorry if this method has been mentioned. I didn't read all the comments. I enjoy the channel, though. Keep up the good work, Sam.
Love your channel and for the most part you do things properly. Here is a tip, bumpers that are cracked to an edge are a difficult to repair.Your repair will not last.A item you might want to look into for your bumper repairs is 3m panel bond.It is used for bonding body panels but works great on bumpers. It adheres well and is sandable.Cheers.
Samcracc's crackdown on the cracced bumper craccs.
Mmm like pop rocks in the eyes
There is a serious wisecraccing theme here
love your work and i learn a lot nice
My favorite UA-cam channel! Been waiting 6 days for this video.
Thank you for the info! I didn't even know plastic welding existed till now. Definitely going to use this on my restore project!
just a thought. not sure jb weld is good to use on the bumper cover. jb weld doesn't flex very well. won't it crack or chunk off if something contacts that area? the cover flexes some what. weld doesn't!
robert coffin This! He should have used flexible filler. If he wanted to fill the crack he could have filled the crack with more plastic then sanded down the area and used a flexible filler. I also think he should have drilled the end of the crack to make sure it never comes back but that’s just me.
When doing plastic repair, I typically stop-drill the cracks to prevent further cracking prior to filling the cracks.
"How stupid could I be, I welded the vise grips on the wrong way." LOL
The alert popped up and I thought it was a Chris Fixx video, was confusing. Excited for the 911 updates!!!
I had the same problem but on the driver side of the rear fender. Mine was pretty mangled so I opted for getting a cut out of a donor car and butt welded that in. Lot faster, lot less filler and better looking final result. The donor part was only $45 from another totaled 911.Good luck! cant wait for the next video.
Great informative video, thanks for the tips and knowledge to do my own work on my car.
Sometimes watching Sam work on cars, especially body work, is so cringe worthy.
why is that? he seems to be following pretty much standard home shop bodywork/mechanical repair. This guy isn't representing himself as a body man or a mechanic... although he might well be both... he is showing his subscribers how to find deals and turn them into winners. Thanks for that Samcrac! :)
Lol I love as my friends would call "Portuguese Engineering" the tool you welded.
Respect doing the work yourself and learning through trial and error
You’re so good at plugging sponsors but also making content based jokes while you are at it!
Lads - when/if you run out of the supplied mesh and plastic sticks, you can melt staples and paper clips into the piece you’re welding and also use used zip ties (new if you don’t care) for filler rod.
Love watching budget diy backyard repairs!
this vid taught me alot about body repair.. nice1
Today, Mr. Crac repairs some cracc
Nice work Sam. I have been doing lots of plastic welding the last few years and like the way you added the mesh.
OMG I swear I saw you at harbor freight a few weeks back. You were focused on phone and looking deep for something in welding area. Ironically I picked up some of the same tools for my projects. Great to see Tampa area blowing up with UA-cam projects. Keep it up
Sam, you missed your calling. You are an excellent PR man. You could make a fortune doing infomercials. Kudos to you.
Love your channel. I was looking for a new razor company with all my social outrage, so I’m using your link! Also, I want to buy your 911. It’s my fave color too!
I do like your ingenuity! Not everyone has fancy workshops and tools, good on you!
Samcrac, I admire you because you show your mistakes in your videos. You take it all in stride and have an amazing attitude. Please, keep up your awesome work.
Love the tool. In situations where you can't get behind the panel to hammer and dolly, the slide hammer is probably best but you can also drill a hole in the side then push the damaged area out from behind. Or you can cut out the damage, hammer the section you cut out back to as close to normal as possible then weld it back in. Good luck, it's coming along great!
Nice reveal Sam, but you left out the Dollar Shave Club timelapse. :-) Enjoying your videos.
Loving this re-build. Would love to fix up an older Porsche. Great work.
Great work!
Nice work Samcrac!!
It's coming together! I lost it at the Offset meme though. Hahahahahahaha!
This is amazing info right here.
Use your welder and fill in those holes and grind flat before adding your fill (I'd recommend the fiberglass filler for first coat, regular polyester after). The last thing you want is water getting behind the filler and into the the rocker.
Great video Sam!! Doing the same work the other day with lots of studs. Grind it smooth, glass (its water proof and wont cause bubbling at a later date) it close and fill with filler that sands easily. Hope this helps. And thanks again for sharing.
Take a scuff pad on the plastic bumper before priming. It takes away the little fuzzies that you see in the primer.
Liking the new B-Roll music Sam.... very mello. Where can I buy it? That paint turbine system is $1300. That is a lot more than HARBOR FREIGHT... worth it?
We're going to find out soon. I do know it's still cheaper than a good spray gun and a huge compressor
Always drill a hole at the end of any crack in plastic to help it stop from splitting more! More hole less Crac :)
exactly.
Also, you will find jb quick works better on bumpers and plastic repairs than most commercial products. Glad you found it.
Flex additive? Did you put it in the paint? It will blow off the bumpers if you don't put it in the paint. All the poly bumper covers and side skirts are painted with flex additive so they can flex
I dont know that its necessary. I repainted plastics many times with enamels and urethanes and never had any crack.
@@dixoncider7256 it will only cause a problem if you bump something enough to flex the plastic. The newer paints are better and some don't require it. It is in the paint instructions depending on what you use.
@@curvs4me The JB weld is bigger problem in this case, since that shit doesn't flex at all when turning / going over speedbumps. But other than that it was alright I think,.
@@Swordie100 yikes I forgot about that. Versa Chem makes a plastic epoxy. It cures but it remains flexible.
@@Swordie100 Sam is acquiring some serious skills doing this. I almost want to give it a go.
Love that Nike sweater Sam
Someone probably already added this but when you repair a crack like that use an appropriately sized drill bit to drill a hole at the end of the crack. That will definitely terminate any additional spreading in the future.
I loved the Offset wheel on the slide hammer 😂😂
You should either weld or use your uni-spotter to fill the holes left behind from your rocker repair. You can use the uni spotter by tacking another nail on the hole, cutting it just above the stud with side cutters and then grinding flush.this will prevent moister from entering and causing your repair to fail..
Who needs 100% fixed when Samcrac can get you "98% there"?!?!
I’m a chick that knows nothing about car repair and for come reason I’m obsessed with your videos
Good work Sam. To pull dents i weld nails to the body and use a slide hammer with the end cut off and weld the end of the nail to the slide hammer and cut the nail off after pulling.
Can’t wait until you finish this. Big Porsche fan. Great content as usual. What song is that when you first begin plastic welding the front bumper? You use that song twice in the vid.
For next time if you use a heat gun to pre-melt the plastic it goes much faster. 3M also makes a really good plastic repair kit with a 2 part filler that IMO if done properly is better than melting but either way, done right works well. You can also use pieces of an old bumper and a heat gun or torch to build up that back of the bumper with some extra plastic.
You're an inspiration to anyone watching your videos to then go and do the job properly!
Keep posting. Great car.
Time to huff some spray paint, chug a 12 pack of icehouse and then work on a porsche project!!!
Sam, it's nice to see your channel get hooked up with some Eastwood products. I'm no expert, just a DIY'er, but they have some great instruction videos on YT. Also, I'm cracking up at the innovative solution you tried at 11:36!
I don’t care how good he is at fixing up cars, his biggest talent is subtly segwaying to the sponsorship announcement.
Sam you need to weld in the holes you make with the stud welder.
Great way to think on the fly! Not perfect, but gets the job done
Superb!

I always use fiberglass fill for places where you can't get the pull as smooth. Do a few swipes with the fill and finish off with Bondo. I use the fill to fill enough to where you have to minimal sanding on it because the dust it makes you itch really bad and Bondo dust doesn't.
Great vid
I usually fill cracks on the visible side with glue gun so I have somewhat stiff and good connection on the other. Then on the other side I go over the crack with small dremel to make more place for filling. After patching just remove the excess glue with sharp knife. That way there's way smoother surface that don't need so much filling.
Great Video!!!! Thanks
Even if Jb weld wont crack, overtime it shrinks and will crack the paint over it.
His right arm must be buff as shit, it's getting a workout in the bedroom and on the porche now 😂😂
