    Watching each video on grammar and the essays gave me a great refresher on all the knowledge needed to take this test. The way you have taught this information across really stuck and became memorable for me. Thanks a bunch for making all these great videos available for use on UA-cam. I take my praxis tomorrow and this essay has been stressing me out. I did not realize how easy and simple it is. The concept of "plagiarism" has been engraved in my brain that "restating" panics me, but this makes me feel at easy.

    • @KathleenJasperEdD

      Don't panic. It is not plagiarizing if you cite it. The source-based essay is about summarizing both points from an objective standpoint. Summarize and cite and you will be fine.

    using italicized when stating the title of a work is only necessary when the source is a novel or something that is considered lengthy. Quotations are used more with smaller work/articles. Just a heads up for those thinking about italicizing.

    I just took the writing praxis and felt so confident until the source based essay. I had watched your videos and felt prepared. However, the sources didn’t have opposite opinions, they were just related on topic. That through my whole writing process off with what I was going to say. I’m nervous I didn’t pass!

    • @KathleenJasperEdD
      @KathleenJasperEdD  2 місяці тому +1

      It's completely understandable to feel thrown off when the exam doesn't align with your expectations, especially after putting in the effort to prepare. But remember, the Praxis is designed to challenge you and assess your ability to adapt and think critically. Even if the sources didn't present opposing viewpoints as you anticipated, your ability to analyze and synthesize information is still valuable. Your preparation wasn't in vain; it likely helped you approach the essay with more confidence and structure. Try to stay positive and trust in your skills. You might have performed better than you think!

    Thank you so much for this. I do have a concern. I have a book that recommends breaking up the ideas into positive and negative points and drawing a conclusion based on that. The book recommends weighing the challenges/benefits and basing your essay on that formula.

    • @KathleenJasperEdD
      @KathleenJasperEdD  3 роки тому

      There is no definitive way to write for these essays. We have a formula and others do too. Your best bet is to find one that works for you and stick to it. You can also combine ideas from both approaches. The main thing is to follow the rubric.

    Thanks for the tips! I have my GACE exam tomorrow. It is similar to the Praxis Core Test. However, in our exam, we have to side with a topic. Can you give me an example of how that thesis would look like? Should I add a third paragraph siding with one of the arguments?

    • @KathleenJasperEdD
      @KathleenJasperEdD  3 роки тому

      Hi there, I just double checked the GACE specs again and the writing is identical to Praxis Core. You have to write 2 essays: one argumentative and one source-based. The argumentative you choose a definitive side. The source-based, you do what is outlined in the above video. Here is the link to the argumentative essay. That is where you do take a position. Hope that helps. Good luck!

    Hi! I love these videos and I have been practicing from them and with Khan Academy test prep! I am taking my Praxis writing exam tomorrow and my question relates to using personal information within the intro of the source-based essay. When practicing, I wrote my thesis statement like "passage 1 emphasizes the benefits of ... while passage 2 draws important concerns for ...", but then I was reading over the examples and they included personal information in the intro. Is this a strong thesis statement or should I include personal information that is outside both articles? It makes perfect sense to use it in an argumentative essay, but not so much in a source-based essay.

    • @KathleenJasperEdD
      @KathleenJasperEdD  3 роки тому +2

      Good question A personal reference is effective in the argumentative essay. But it is not necessary for the source-based. We have our students follow the formula in this video and they pass. Try not to complicate it. The thesis you listed above is great because the essay is supposed to set the summary of the two points up. Hope that helps. Follow our formula. It works! Good luck on your exam :)

    This video is amazing! I have two questions, I know they may not be answered right away but if I don't pass, I could use this info. I have my Writing Praxis Exam tomorrow and I was just going over all the concepts one more time and looking for more tips in the writing component. I have been studying for this exam for a month, 1 hour a day. I tend to get around 20-24 out of 40, I answer all of them, in the selected response and don't have time to go back to proofread my answers before the time goes out. My question here is how do I better manage my time? So far I am skipping the harder ones and then once I come back to them, I take a long time to work through them. The second question regards the writing part of the exam. I just run out of time, a lot. I am worried that I don't have enough paragraphs, usually only three. How do I increase my writing speed? I have been practicing for a month and I have no clue what I am doing wrong.

    • @KathleenJasperEdD

      Hi There, I would really try process of elimination on the multiple choice to help you decrease time spent on questions. With the writing. Try mapping first or jotting down a few bulleted points so you do not spend too much time writing. KEEP IT SIMPLE. The biggest mistake people make is they try to write the next great American novel. That is not the task. Just complete what they are asking you to do and move on. Let us know how things go. You can do it!

    Thanks for that great explain. I’m just confused of the arrangement of the essay is it supposed to be in this order ( Intro with thesis statement - paragraph 1- paragraph 2 - conclusion) or this one ( paragraph 1- paragraph 2 --- intro -- conclusion)

    • @KathleenJasperEdD
      @KathleenJasperEdD  3 роки тому

      We draft the essay out of order because it is easier to write the details first. However, the finished order is:
      1. Intro (thesis last sentence of first paragraph
      2. Detail Paragraph 1
      3. Details Paragraph 2
      4. Conclusion
      At the end of this video, we show you the final product. Hope that helps. Thank you so much for watching and commenting.

    Hi Dear Kathleen, I am preparing for the praxis writing exam. I am confused at one point. Should we use common words in the introduction of source-based essays such as beneficial, detrimental, e,g. like you do or pick one certain example from sources and continue on body paragraphs what we picked as an example in the introduction part. Hopefully, I can explain what I am asking. Thank you in advance...

    • @KathleenJasperEdD
      @KathleenJasperEdD  10 місяців тому

      The approach you take can vary depending on the specific essay prompt and the sources provided.
      Here's a general guideline to follow:
      - Start with a clear thesis statement that outlines your overall argument.
      - If using common words like "beneficial" or "detrimental," ensure that your thesis statement clearly conveys your stance on the topic.
      - If introducing specific examples, make sure they support your thesis and relate to the sources provided.
      Ultimately, the choice between these approaches depends on the specific requirements of the exam and the sources you are working with. Always make sure to carefully read and analyze the prompt and sources provided, as they will guide your approach to writing the essay.

    • @KathleenJasperEdD
      @KathleenJasperEdD  3 роки тому +1

      No the 30 min starts as soon as you begin. That is why I do not recommend reading the entire 2 sources. Get the gist; one will be for something and one will be against something. Then pick out important info to write your essay. If you read everything line by line, you waste time. This is a tough task.

    • @KathleenJasperEdD

      I would cite them when you use them. Lets say the first source is written by Smith and the second is written by Jones. When you cite the first source, just say, "According to Smith, the problem with society..." And do that for Jones as well. You do not have to cite every sentence. You just need a couple of "according to..." to support your essay. Hope that helps. Have a great day.
