Complete Philodendron Goeldii Care and Repotting

- Philodendron Goeldii now Thaumatophyllum Spruceanum is a very easy to grow plant with such beautiful and interesting leaves.
I grow my Thaumatophyllum Spruceanum in my Office grow space in bright light with some direct sunlight. I’ve seen Google images of mature specimens growing in almost full sun, so I have slowly been acclimatising my plant to direct sunlight.
When watering this plant always make sure that it is not standing in water. I water my plant about once a week, and it seems to be responding well to that.
I fertilise my plant with a universal houseplant fertiliser about twice a month.
When repotting this plant I’m using a mix of; coco coir, fine sphagnum moss, and an indoor potting mix. You want to use something light and airy, that will allow for excellent drainage.
I haven’t really noticed any pests on this plant and generally, Philodendrons seem to be pest-free. If you notice and pests on your plant I’ve found that the best way to deal with them is to hit them hard and continuously over a period of weeks with either an organic or chemical pesticide - depending on your preference.

Heard about the Goeldii a few months back(March 2024). I was able to get one for only $8 in a 6 inches pot. It is growing fast! I want to see those "Fan like" Leaves.
Never heard of this one before. What a beauty! Want one now.
You have to get one! :)
I received a small one two weeks ago. It has shown a bit of new growth. I noticed on a distribution map from Encyclopedia of Life that its habitat extends well into the Amazon Rainforest.
It's a really cool philodendron :) Good luck with yours!

Wow the foliage is to die for!! Glad to know its easy to care for. Happy to meet another plant lover!
Hey, nice to "meet" you too :)
Corbin
I was watching this and your accent is unmistakably South African, to my surprise you Insta confirmed it. Very nice videos I hope this channel gets some more attention from our local plant community. I will sure be spreading the word!
Hello thank you for your comment :) That really means a lot x
Corbin
Also from South Africa. Saw a big spicemon at a local nursery. Still deciding to buy it or not. A bit pricey
Just picked one up about that size. This video was so great. Thanks!
So glad the video helped!
new subscriber here! I just purchased this plant today. I had to do a bit of research before I purchased it and that is how I came across your video. Because of your video is why I completed the process of buying this plant too.
Hello:) I'm so glad I could help! xx
Corbin
Wow thank you so much! I just got one of these yesterday because it looked like it was related to a split leaf philodendron. Because it has a similar texture and color to the leaves I just thought it would be fine, but I was still worried.
This makes me feel so much more confident and I REALLY like that you made this video.
I'm going to subscribe. Please keep doing these. People just assume you already know what you're doing.
I do actually have a lot of experience with plants but sometimes I feel nervous and your video really helped me this time.
Such a pleasure, hearing this is so amazing :) I'm so glad that my video helped you! Wishing you the best of luck with your plant :)
Corbin
I really enjoyed this video. I am a new goeldii plant parent and am anxious to see it grow.
Hello, I'm so glad you liked the video! I'm sure your plant will grow very well!
Corbin
Thank you. 🌱❤
I got a goldii a few months ago but all the leaves died. Thankfully, I remembered that they have a trunk and now trying to rehab it. Wish me luck!
Hello, so sorry to hear that your plant lost all of its leaves! I hope it regrows !
Corbin
Did they grow back?
Very informative video, I enjoyed it. What strength (% solution) do you use of surgical spirits/isopropyl alcohol for pests ?
Thank you :) I don't dilute surgical spirits I just simply spray it on the plants. The only plants I would not use it on would be ferns or anything is really fragile or soft leaves. I've noticed that it burned the leaves of my Maidenhair fern. When I use bleach I dilute it to one part bleach for 9 parts water (spray on and rinse off after 10-20 minutes)
Corbin
Plant Basics : Thank You, I never knew about the bleach, Im definitely going to try that one. Thanks.
@@flz8869 You have to :)
Thank you for the great video. I received my Goeldii plant and need a plant soil recipe, can you provide the amounts needed for orchid bark, coco-coir etc.
Hello, I use equal parts of each :)
Just to confuse things even further, I've seen this in the shops as 'Philodendron Funny Bunny'. Which I suppose they think is more 'saleable' (a bit like how they sell Rhaphidophora tetrasperma as 'Mini Monstera'!)
I know! Some growers also refer to juvenile Tetrspermas as Philodendron Trophy! That caused a lot of confusion!
Corbin
Do you have any of the specifics or any tutorials on how to propagate please? Thanks
I don't at present, these would be easy to propagate through division.
:)
Corbin
@@PlantBasics Yes. I think I see two crowns on this one.
@@bobbohata9641 Yes it does have 2 crowns :)
Do you mind showing us how to propagate this plant?
Hello, the easiest would be by division, my plant at the moment is not ready to be divided just yet, but I will keep this in mind for a future video.
Corbin
Hi, would you advise what could be the reason of new shoot being flimsy and how to help this?
What do you mean by flimsy? it might the that your plant might be in low light? I can't really give a definitive answer without more information :)
Corbin
@@PlantBasics Hi Corbin, it was droopy in one afternoon, but it recovered after few hours. I guess it got too much sun might be it. Thanks!
@@ryanfong20 Ok, so it might've been light stress then, I'm so glad that it recovered :)
Love goeldii
Me too! :)

Soil Mix
Does anybody know how to propagate these beauties please? :) x
You need a node from the stem, which is usually underground just below the surface. When you remove a petiole, you expose the node
@@hollypuckett3931 Heya, just wondering if you've ever managed to successfully propagate one or basically where you got this infromation form. I've had one of these plants about 4 yrs and it's been an uphill battle, 2 of three of the specimens in the original pot have now died. Have tried propagating on various occasions with zero success, and there's almost no information online about actually propagating these specific plants, or a lot of the information doesn't really seem to apply to these to be honest (described methid doesn't seem right). Most recently I literally tried cutting off two of the leaf stems with one of the nodes below (btw, when people refer to nodes on these plants, do they mean the aerial roots that grow outwards? Surely they don't mean the little nodes on the leaf stems where the leaves grow out from?), kept it in frsh moist soil, and sure enough within about five days both leaf stems just died and fell off and that was that 🙄 also it doesn't seem quite right to me because in order to get that chunk of stem with the aerial node I had to literally cut into the tough woody bark?
I mean obviously these have to have a way of propagating, and I do see cuttings sold on Etsy and whatnot, but there is literally no photographic or video evidence showing what people are referring to when they talk about propagating?
OP do you know please???? I can't understand how there is so little information on the ground about propagating these. It's very frustrating! I've asked on various different websites and NEVER found a satisfactory answer to this question. Please see my reply to other commentator below
@@barnabymalins7888 You’re right, you DO need to cut through the woody trunk. Each leaf has a node, yes but you more or less need to cut almost like a cross section. When I propagated thamatophyllum, I essentially tried to cut slices, image of you were slicing carrots but the carrot grew leaves from it. Slice it the same way you normally would, which may damage a few of the nodes but you’ll keep a few intact. In my experience, it will activate multiple nodes when you get it rooted. It DOESN’T seem right but that’s how it’s done. They growth habit makes it exceedingly difficult but that’s what it is. The intermodal spacing is minuscule! I suppose it’s similar to how you would propagate a self-heading type but with MUCH tighter internodes
I only use clay because I over love my plants with 💦!
Ewwwww! Don't slip pot! .😢
