Yesss....this is a good example of a trim! Please go on tour across the United States and show all beautician/salons what a true TRIM means to customers. How many of us have gone to a salon for a trim and lost inches?? Ugghh!
It's the same tactic mechanics use. They do waaay more than what you actually need in the moment to get that schmoney outta ya pocket cause you may not be back for a while.
Hi, I just wanted to let you know that you have helped so many of us naturals. There's been a lot of negative natural hair UA-camrs popping up thinking they know everything and spewing a lot of hate and negativity. I appreciate your hard work and efforts, I've been natural for 2 1/2 years only because of you, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and wisdom!!
Naptural85 do you know of anywhere else I can find the brush you are using? It's unavailable on Amazon and the product website :( I haven't used tools to detangle my hair in a couple of years, so I'm terrified to buy a brush lol but I really want to get the best trim possible!
I cut my hair (for the first time) while watching this video and it actually came out great 🙌 no one could tell I lost any length and my hair feels a lot smoother. You're doing great things here 😂🙌
I haven’t trimmed my hair in more than a year and my ends have been looking sooooo TRASH! So I watched this tutorial, bought hair shears and I went to work! My hair turned out pretty well! It has this really cute shape that I didn’t even know I was making lmaoo! I am lucky it turned out so cute! I had to cut like 1.5 inches off though because the split ends were no joke. Imma thinking of this as a fresh start and I’m imma start taking better care of my hair now.
Your hair looks so healthy and vibrant! I’m so jealous! I’ve always had fine hair, but at my age (42) and having chronic anemia throughout my teenage and adult life, acquiring a healthy, full head of hair has always been a struggle for me. I stopped relaxing my hair in December 2006 hoping that this would help improve the health of my hair. However, it seemed that regardless of all my efforts to “care” for my hair, my hair remained thin, lifeless, continually breaking off, having a shocking amount of hair coming out from the roots with every comb-through, and remained completely unmanageable. My hair couldn't/can’t even hold a curl. There were times when I simply stopped caring about my hair because it was so frustrating and depressing; I just covered it up with a scarf. I wasted a lot of money trying to “fix” my hair issues. But, I am not one to give up. I believe there is a chance for me and my hair. I’m still working on trying to improve the health of my hair with help from informative sites like yours. I don’t have the money to get professional hair care, so I must do it myself. We all know that hair trimming is important for healthy hair, and that cutting/trimming your own hair can be extremely stressful and scary! Which is why I am so thankful that you have provided this video. It is a big help. Thank you!
You’re the one who first taught me how to trim my hair when I went natural 3 years ago! The video is still very much relevant and helpful even though it’s a bit old. Love you whit!!!
I watched this video multiple times and I finally got the courage to do this to today. I just wanted to say THANK U! THANK U! THANK U!!! My family made me feel like it was the dumbest decision ever to take scissors to my own hair. But your patience in every video makes me feel like anything is possible when it comes to this natuarl hair of mines... THANK YOU SO MUCH...
I just did a trim last week 😩. I should’ve waited! This is almost exactly what I did, so I thank you for this video, you gave me confidence in my trim. 😘
Thank you for all of your hard work in helping people with natural hair. One of the things I like about you the most is your professionalism and your positivity. It is a pleasure to watch you, as your videos are very informative. I recently bought your line of products "Melanin" and I can see that it's a good move for me. Its great that you put in the time (6 years) to perfect the product and that means a lot. I started using it and I'm very happy with the results I'm getting from all the healthy ingredients. Thanks for all your hard work and I will definitely share this with all my family and friends 😊. Since I haven't been to a salon since before the pandemic started, I am really due for a hair trim but still don't want to go to a salon. So I watched your video on trimming natural hair and now I am less nervous to try it, so thanks for that lol 😆.
I love that your videos are so original. I don't feel like you're spoon feeding me other people's videos in a slightly different way. You are amazing! Keep up the amazing work!!
Thank you so much for this demo. I followed your tips and trimmed my hair yesterday. Today my hair looks so good, I'm shocked. I usually get a salon cut at Deva Chan about once every eight months, but after another vlogger pointed out that a cut is to shape your style but not really going in and getting all the ends I realized I really needed to address that issue. I trimmed while damp with leave-in conditioner, which was a little messy, but it was very easy with your instructions. Next time, in about two months, I'll try trimming before I apply the leave-in for less mess. :-)
I can't tell based on the texture i usually just go based on where my hair starts to thin in comparison to the hair thats more full when i go down the length of my hair.
I went to cosmetology school way back but you have trained me on how to train natural hair so thank you I do this for my daughter at the end of every summer. I do angle my fingers so that her bottom layers are a good bit longer than the top ones it makes her twists easer to do and for them to stay even without rubber bands it also adds a cute shape to her wash and go ( which I hardly ever do BC she is an active 7 yr old)
Hey Yalll….so yea let me tell you the way I was panickingggggg. So basically I took an hour trying to figure out exactly what to do and because I had to get braided I ended up only doing one half of my head 😭. My hair is pretty short and shrinks well so you can’t tell even though there’s a SIGNIFICANT size difference but yea. I honestly just wanted to say thank youuu gurrllll, I swear this video was on repeat as I was stressin through the whole thing but wow does it work. Just thank you so much for all the tips and tricks, this was my first time ever cutting my hair on my own and it turned out pretty good thanks to you. I just know I’m going to be using this method for the rest of my life, thank you so much!!!
I am three months fully natural after being 19 months post relaxer and I plan to trim my hair this weekend..... Got some useful tips from you. Thanks Whitney and I love your hair❤❤❤ so full and healthy
Thanks for this video Whitney. You have the best hair ever. Thick, woolly, and pretty. It's authentic. It looks hydrated, moist. It looks well moisturized. I like it a lot.
Hairstylist tip: Use a piece of the first cut section as a guide so you don't have to guess or keep in mind how much you need to cut as you continue because you can see it. Just make sure the section isn't too thick or you may accidentally cut into your guide.

OMG thank you Whitney for posting this! I have only read the title. These past few days I have been searching for videos on how to trim my hair I know you won’t disappoint thank you! ❤️
I was wondering if its healthier to detangle the hair when it's wet to avoid breakage...(that's what I do) I felt a little nervous seeing you detangle your beautiful hair dry even though I know you had said your hair was previously detangled. ❤
I have type 4b hair. I'm no Professional but in my experience when I detangle my soaking wet hair it SNAPS. When I detangle my dry hair it CRUNCHES. But it I add a little detangling spray (Cantu's coconut detangling spray for kids) my hair is slightly damp and has no scary sound effect when I detangle. It works for me
Lauren Evans yes me too hair is weaker when wet that’s why it snaps and can’t detangle too dry I detangle with a leave in and an oil on damp hair it’s honestly the best way
Whitney you have is going through withdrawals... Sooo happy you posted. This is how I trim my ends also or when I straighten it. It's really the same process, the ends that resist the heat have to go. Hope that helps someone!
I like the fact that there is not any heat involved with this technique. I just trimmed doing a blow out 2 weeks ago but now I'm looking forward to the next 4 months.
Wow your hair grows so fast you are the first person that I been watching on the hair channel your hair always been so beautiful and shining love your family.
I've never done it since I got rid of my relaxed ends. You made me brave enough to do it myself Whitney! Thank you for that little push! My hair will thank me.
Thanks Whitney! QUESTION: how do you keep your hair so healthy it seems like whenever I trim my hair I always have to trim at least 1 inch to 1.5 inch and most of what I see is fairy knots. My hair gets tangled so easily. Any advice on how to prevent that???
Do you do a lot of wash 'n go's? This can cause ssk and split ends. It depends on your hair Tbh. I can do wash n gos every now and again but ik I'll get hella ssk if I do
I make a balm with 1 tbsp each shea butter, beeswax and castor oil(whatever oil you want really) and i always put it on the last 2 inches of my hair everytime I wash right after sealing with my hair oil and also when i retwist. It has helped with how much the very ends of my hair tangle. it might help you too
Ladies trim your hair as needed.I was able to grow my natural hair over 22 inches, just made my first UA-cam video on this, and I only trimmed when needed. Don’t trim/cut just because, you are trying to grow your hair :)! Great content and demonstration on how to trim 4c hair when it’s not straight!
Need this for so long I hated wash day because of the tangled only to realize it's because of my damaged ends that we're causing me to basically tear out my hair no matter how much slippage the conditioner gave me. But now I'm concerned about what's actual damage and what's my natural texture 😩😩
I’ve always had this same issue not realizing it’s bc I need a damn trim lol wash days could go by sooo smoothly but nooo I just have to leave these split ends in
I was recommended to Zala from a hair dresser and their Instagram and website had amazing photos and tutorials. My package was express shipped and arrived to me in 2 days!!! I was so excited and ran home to collect it not knowing what to expect. The packaging was amazing, so over and beyond. It even came with a box for me to store my hair and shampoo and conditioner for my hair which I didn’t even expect. Other then that the quality is amazing and it’s actually the perfect colour match. Going to be telling all my friends about this, so happy!!
Okay, I think we have more in common than sharing our first name. There have been at least 10 times in the many years that I have been a subscriber of yours, that I have been thinking about something I need to do with my hair, next, and then the next day, I see a video from you on that very topic! The last video in which I remember this happenig is the video about: Black tea rinse to stop shedding! Crazy! Thank you and I can't wait to see this video bc I JUST stretched my hair yesterday, with intentions of trimming, today(Tuesday)! As always, thank you for sharing with us!
I enjoyed this video very much! The only times I cut my hair were when I just hack it all off, like, from shoulder-length to almost 4 inches. People were mad at me. They liked my hair. They liked to play with it and stroke it, but I'm just done with the heat. So I cut it all off. Not my best idea, I admit. But so worth it! And my hair was damaged too, from my lack of care. So I maybe did some good? But anyway, I really admire your hair. They look so healthy! I really really admire your dedication towards them. My hair is the most stubborn and easy hair ever. As long as I shampoo, condition, and vitamin it every few days, it'll stay thick and strong. With the heat and humidity here... I really wonder how long I'll keep up with long hair. I put it in a bun almost all day and night. I really don't have the patience and will to try more complicated styles. That's why I always admire people with natural afro hair that take care of their hair personally. Y'all rock! Also you're so gorgeous and warm-homey-feels :D
I would like to see what your hair looks like after taking down the twisted bantu knots i might trim it and style it like that and undo it the next day and wear that! might be a bomb pattern lol 😍
I really appreciate you posting your videos. I learn so much from your videos. Your hair is just beautiful. I hope to get mine like this one day. I hope your hubby and the the beautiful children are all well. 🙂🙂.
Unicornacid word, finished taking my braids out today, so need a proper trim, probably need to remove the rest of my bleached hair, cause it's really messing with my ends, making me need to trim ever so often. That bleach too a toll on my ends to I ain't retaining anything cause I gotta cut it out everytime
Thank you! My daughter has bra strap length hair and she needs a trim badly! How often should I trim her fluffy, natural hair? The last time it was trimmed was November 2017😱!
Thanks for this great video. I trim my hair myself so tips are always welcome. I feel so accomplished when I finish and my ends are clean and happy!!!! Please keep the awesome content coming I learn so much from you!! Gigi
Naptural85 yay!!! Ive been waiting for one forever! In your last length check video I think you said you would do them every six months. Then 3yrs later...lol 😂
Since wearing my hair natural I’ve saved a ton in salon visits. Reclaimed my time! 😆 The remaining dependencies are the trim and color. I’ll leave the color to them for now but the trim? I’m ready to try it.
HairByPierre if you're trying to grow your hair i say every 6 months should be good unless you straighten your hair often and like the person above said trim when needed
Story time: GIRL...I’m a new natural, so forgive the ignorance, but I totally forgot to detangle my hair when I went to my hair stylist for a trim on my TWA. I was totally surprised and disappointed when she detangled my hair dry and used a paddle brush. It hurt so much! I didn’t say anything bc I wasn’t sure if that was the proper way for it to be done or not (I normally use water for detangling, but I’ve never trimmed my hair). Lesson learned: detangle hair first and bring your preferred brush for combing hair and request a spray bottle with water to be used to dampen hair 😂
hello Natural85, so i love your show. you are what keeps me going. I watch you all the time just to keep my spirits up because my aunt put a perm in my hair when I was six because she was tired of dealing with all the natural hair that I had. it was your length now, and when it was straightened it was at my waist. I was 8 years old then. my hair has not been so long since. it fell out in big patches so now I am going back to the natural hairstyles and my hair thickness and strength have shot through the roof. even though it is short, it has never looked better...and my patience has gotten better with myself and my body. PRAYER GOT ME THROUGH A LOT OF IT TOO. :D I just have two questions. 1. how many times a year do you blow-dry or straighten your hair? 2. how many times a year should you trim your hair so that it grows more than you cut, and also to stop the split ends and damaged hair before it gets too far? (i have not cut mine since the big chop. I don't feel a resistance as you say in this video, and I don't comb or brush my hair unless it is wet or damp. I find that I lose more hair combing dry hair than wet or damp because I hair soaks up moisture like a starving baby.)
i just trim my hair every 6 months or so while its still in twist . if my hair is kind of straightish and takes a long time to curl up at the ends even in a 2 strand twist then that usually means its time to trim . i do like how you trim your hair in such a professional way
Trini Girl Natural You know because they no longer cut the same. When it snips it just doesn't feel as clean and you may find yourself having to snip harder or multiple times where you used to have to only do it once.
I really need a trim but I'm so nervous about trimming it myself but...it is only hair and it'll grow back plus I'm not trying to spend the coins to pay nobody right now. Sooo...it looks like I've talked myself into giving it a try. Thx Whit 😂😂😂

I'm still wondering why you haven't hit one million yet, your videos are simply amazing.
Even left in the Bantu knots it looks cute xx,
I like the fact that there is not any heat involved with this technique. I just trimmed doing a blow out 2 weeks ago but now I'm looking forward to the next 4 months.
when you don't know what else to watch and @naptural85 comes thru with some knowledge yasss #hairguru ❤❤❤
XoXo!!! Thanks Tanisha L !! I hope you enjoyed! 🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️

This. Is. SO. SATISFYING😍😍😍
Yaasssss Whitney, your hair have been giving me life for Years😩👌
Is that her real name?
It's like you talk and do the voice over while still in the action of the other moment! I can't explain it. lol but I love it!!!
I've never done it since I got rid of my relaxed ends. You made me brave enough to do it myself Whitney! Thank you for that little push! My hair will thank me.
Just wanted to take a minute to thank you for being one of the reasons I now have the confidence to wear my hair naturally. So yeah..thank you :)
I just trimmed my hair Saturday!! 🤣 Love your videos
Phoenix Echoes Audio Xo!!! Thank you!! 🙏🏾❤️❤️
Not everyone goes to the salon, so this is needed and appreciated ❤
Thanks Whitney! QUESTION: how do you keep your hair so healthy it seems like whenever I trim my hair I always have to trim at least 1 inch to 1.5 inch and most of what I see is fairy knots. My hair gets tangled so easily. Any advice on how to prevent that???
Ello Sings mined do too, I hate it, makes me just want to cut it all off
Do you do a lot of wash 'n go's? This can cause ssk and split ends. It depends on your hair Tbh. I can do wash n gos every now and again but ik I'll get hella ssk if I do
No I don’t but anytime I wear my hair out for a few days like a twist out it gets extremely tangled.
Mikayla Jackson how do you wear your hair?
I’ve always had this same issue not realizing it’s bc I need a damn trim lol wash days could go by sooo smoothly but nooo I just have to leave these split ends in
This hairstylists are never getting my money again. I'm learning everything during quarantine😂
Beautiful healthy hair.❤️😍
I just washed my hair today. This video reminded me that I soon need a trim. Thanks Whitney, your hair is looking beautiful & healthy as always! 😍😘💖💝
Girl, I remember when you did a bantu style video and added extra hair. This looks even cuter!!!! 😍 Thanks for the video!
Me: Man, I need a trim, but I wish I could do it properly...
Naptural85: *uploads hair trimming tutorial*
Me: 🙌
look at Oya!!! i saw her face immediately when your frame came up. LOVE YOU GIRLIE!!
i don't think it's possible to get rid of ALL split ends, esp on natural hair
100% fact
Shwetty999 They’re called Fairy knots and same 😭😭
@Shwetty999 Single strand knots
Shwetty999 because you don’t cut enough
I’m literally watching this video as I mini twist my hair and dust my ends! Thanks for the updated trimming tutorial! ❤️❤️❤️
Who is here in 2024😅?😅🙋♀️
I come back here every year! Lol

🙋🏽♀️
Me! Lol
I was just binge watching all of your old videos. You must have read my mind.
Me too girl
Omg I'm sure it would've been cute Marguerita Rucker ! You should def give it a try!! 😘❤️❤️❤️
I really appreciate you posting your videos. I learn so much from your videos. Your hair is just beautiful. I hope to get mine like this one day. I hope your hubby and the the beautiful children are all well. 🙂🙂.
How'd you know? Just took out my braids and by ends are looking more that raggedy 😂😭
😆😆😆 Happy to help Unicornacid!! ❤️❤️❤️
@@keepingitrealnaturalist5472 you can dye your hair w/o bleach
@@katnisseverdeen4021 found out way too late.
Glad I came across your channel. I went to cosmetology school and have been nervous about doing my own trim but not anymore.
Thank you! My daughter has bra strap length hair and she needs a trim badly! How often should I trim her fluffy, natural hair? The last time it was trimmed was November 2017😱!
Omgggg litterally today I was like is Whitney going to upload anytime soon. My queen has returned!!!😭😂😍😍
I love having African American hair. Our hair so beautiful.
You always help me! I just said if I had one hair wish it would be you styling my hair. These tutorials are the next best thing!
I love this process! It works for me
Thanks for this great video. I trim my hair myself so tips are always welcome. I feel so accomplished when I finish and my ends are clean and happy!!!! Please keep the awesome content coming I learn so much from you!! Gigi
When are you doing another length check video?
Hey LadyRayray14 ! If I do one it'll probably be towards the end of the year! ❤️❤️
How often do you trim your hair now?
Pure me I just looked at her other trimming videos and she said in her other videos every 6-8 months 😊
Just me oh okay yea I trim every 3 months no matter what. Was just curious of how often she trimmed and if it changed
HairByPierre if you're trying to grow your hair i say every 6 months should be good unless you straighten your hair often and like the person above said trim when needed
HairByPierre Same here 😊
I trim every 6 months
The ending Bantu style is a look !!! I love and I enjoyed this tutorial very much, thanks ❤️❤️❤️🤗
I just have two questions. 1. how many times a year do you blow-dry or straighten your hair?
2. how many times a year should you trim your hair so that it grows more than you cut, and also to stop the split ends and damaged hair before it gets too far?
(i have not cut mine since the big chop. I don't feel a resistance as you say in this video, and I don't comb or brush my hair unless it is wet or damp. I find that I lose more hair combing dry hair than wet or damp because I hair soaks up moisture like a starving baby.)
Once again you are right on time with this video
I love holding my hair like that, but I don't have any of those medium plastic combs.
Nice reminder! It's always good to see you,Whitney.
I need this video thank you! I hope it works on my 4c hair
Honestly i clicked to see how much ur hair has grown and it grew a lot.
I have been wanting this video!!! I love your channel!❤❤
XoXo!! Hey Azana Queen ! Thank you! 🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️❤️❤️
i just trim my hair every 6 months or so while its still in twist . if my hair is kind of straightish and takes a long time to curl up at the ends even in a 2 strand twist then that usually means its time to trim .
i do like how you trim your hair in such a professional way
How do you know when to replace your shears @naptural85 🙈? Great video!
Trini Girl Natural You know because they no longer cut the same. When it snips it just doesn't feel as clean and you may find yourself having to snip harder or multiple times where you used to have to only do it once.
Brenda Davis I feel like that's way too far gone lol..you should have tossed them 2-3 trims ago if they're doing all that
Trini Girl Natural You're right but if I payed for it then I'm gonna lie and convince myself that they still work for as long as possible.
Trini Girl Natural i mean you asked a question you seem to already know the answer to
April Miller nawwwh, I really don't. I was hoping for a more nuanced answer or first signs 😊. But thanks
I like this. Your hair is so healthy. I like to flat iron my hair first though so you can really see what needs to be trimmed.
Definitely agree, take your time when cutting your hair.
I really need a trim but I'm so nervous about trimming it myself but...it is only hair and it'll grow back plus I'm not trying to spend the coins to pay nobody right now. Sooo...it looks like I've talked myself into giving it a try. Thx Whit 😂😂😂
seeing this now and can't wait to follow your instructions. First time ever to trim my hair myself. Apart from this video, how do u grow such amazing hair? Any tips?
wow im deep conditioning my hair right now and I'm like hmm I should really trim these ends myself. yassss
Julie Brown me too 😭
When you think you're gonna get it done on the weekendd... hahaha
Julie Brown I can totally relate I've been lazy lately and haven't been trimming even though I know I should😭
