    I received you reply, and I must say, you hit the nail on the head in descripting my Cub Cadet Yes, the starter was exactly as you described, I returned the one I thought was to fit, and I found the correct one, I Thank you for all you help. I also had to install a new fuel pump, and after priming it, it fired up like a Champ. The big difference, in the fuel pump was the newer version is sealed, as were the original one had screws on it to open it, WHY? So, I was close to junking this rider and looking to buy some new, your expertise saves me from spend money I didn't have, I want all the readers that come to your site know that you The Shade Tree Fix man, knows his grass cutters and riding lawn mowers. I'm glad to see you're ready for Spring.Those starters are the bane of anyone who turns a key on a car,truck,or tractor.It took 3 for my Pinto,way back,and the 1st 2 ate the flywheel.I have wires twisted to my brushes on my 1996 lawntractor now,as the plastic piece through the case fell apart.Fun stuff.Good that your's was fixable.

    Wow! What a difference. I bought the 3rd gen 9 tooth high torque starter. Can't believe the difference. No more messing with the valves, battery, etc. Cranks like i was always trying to get it to. Never entered my mind it was a weak starter.

    I only wished that I could have seen your video last year. Could have saved me a lot of trouble. Because me working on trying to fix my problem with replacing the solenoid to see if that was the problem. Now for whatever reason I some how made it worse. Now it's not wanting to make any clicking noise, it's not wanting to do anything. When all I should've done was to buy the gen 3 starter and not go cheap and replaced the mower with a gen 2 last year. Thank you for sharing this

    I had a hunch it would be the starter ONLY because I knew you would have already adjusted the valves. But the starter was only a guess. I'll have to remember that. Thanks George.

      I did the valves twice and even tightened the exhaust valve down to it's minimum just in case there was an issue with the compression release. The starter sure makes a BIG difference. Thanks for stopping by, Ron.

    Great Job George , I have bought new Starters before that just had issues . My best guess is they have bad windings in them and some are sold as new but they are rebuilt and have internal issues not addressed by the rebuilder .. But you found a good one and fixed the issues !! ENJOYED..

    I went through the starter headache on my XT-1 about the time you made this video and feel the original starters on these mowers are junk (It was not the solenoid). The mower still would not start readily from cold status so I used starting fluid last summer. This month, I learned of the issue: The choke was not fully closing. The Throttle Cable gets out of adjustment and the choke stays open slightly, so the engine will not start. Videos abound on how to adjust the cable. The choke must be FULLY closed on a cold engine or it will not start or run.

    • @TheShadeTreeFixitMan
      @TheShadeTreeFixitMan  Рік тому

      Yes, I was having a similar issue on my Husqvarna mower, though it had an "automatic" choke. It was actually opening the choke when it was supposed to be closing the choke. This starter issue was a head scratcher for me initially, but I'm glad to have found the fix. Thanks for stopping by

This is one of many reasons I'M not a fan of that series of Kohler engines there commercial engines aren't bad but they seem to have a lot of problems with there home owner series of engines. That 3rd generation of starter does spin a lot faster as well as more torque. God Bless.

    Exactly what mine was doing. I was thinking electric problem and didn't want to deal with it at the time. I let it sit for winter and half a summer then decided to replace some wiring that was bear from rodents chewing and cleaned connections. But when I went to start the starter wasn't engaging. I came to a conclusion that the starter was junk and did a search on UA-cam about this issue and found this video. Wish I found this video last year and just replaced the starter then.

    Sound exactly like my problem, won't fully crank. I did already had the Cub Cadet running, but tried to start again and wouldn't fully crank. Figured my battery was weak, but with new fully charged battery, still did same thing. Like your info on 3rd gen 9 gear. I haven't ordered it yet, but hopefully will do the trick. Crossing my fingers, but your info makes sense. Thanks for info
    One question though, if i have a 10 gear now, and put in a 9 gear, doesn't that misalign the gearing alignment?

    I have a cub cadet that I bought in 2007, , I believe I need to replace the starter with the one you're showing in your video, the bolting pattern is such as the bolt that hold the starter to the engine bolts up and down, where some starters bolt with the bolts going straight in, that is not the one I have, my starter bolt up and down with two nuts holding the starters, in the starter bracket, that I removed ( original) again it's the 2 nuts hold it in the mounting bracket, what kind of money are you looking for on a rider you have, would you take a trade with the grass catcher kit included? let me know what you think, The unit I have is a cub cadet model 1045

    Got your e-mail, Shade Tree Fix it man, here what I know according to the manual that came with the unit when I bought this Cub Cadet brand new, it LT1045, series 1000, .(Hydro-Gear 0510), model= SV600, engine 1.5 liters, MODEL #13AX110H756, SERIAL #1J066H10536, the starter mount to the engine , up right with 2 small nuts that hold it in place, and it seems the starter has a build in solenoid, what happens now, the starter gear when engaged spins, but doesn't engage to the fly wheel to turn the engine over, I 'm only assuming the starter has a build in solenoid ? which seems to be the problem with the starter, any advice you can give would be appreciated, what's your honest opinion of the cub cadet, This is the 1st major problem I've had with this unit. If you could, how many of the different staters CUB CADET has will actually fit this unit or will they all fit, or dose each unit take a different starter? I really appreciate your time in this issue. Let me know what you think...PS, don't believe it a shaft drive unit.

    • @TheShadeTreeFixitMan
      @TheShadeTreeFixitMan  Рік тому

      Your starter is a different setup than the one in my video. It has a separate solenoid, probably mounted near the battery on your mower. It does have a built in "bendix" spring to engage the flywheel, but that is different than the solenoid. My guess is that the bendix spring is broken or weak and you'll have to replace the whole starter. The following is one of the listings on ebay: www.ebay.com/itm/233211408172?
      As you asked, each engine has it's own particular style of starter, and they are also unique to the brand. Yours is a Kohler, single cylinder engine. The engine in my mower is a Vtwin engine. The Cub Cadets are generally a good mower, but some of the newer ones, especially those sold by the big box stores are built more cheaply than the originals. I am currently working on an old Cub Cadet from the 70s that is a real workhorse.
      Your mower is a belt drive unit with a hydrostatic transmission according to the information you gave me. I hope this helps.
