PSP Go was revived by the hacking community with the launch of the custom firmware. To bad they use proprietary cables. Because of this, I try to avoid it.
I was always attracted to the console phone and so naturally for me the best experience with a portable console was with the Xperia Play, almost perfect for emulation a nice physical pad, after that I migrated to the JxD s5800 which has as much quality (as long as we are not afraid of big mobile phone).
This is just a classic showing off how mentally inept Sony was when it came to the PS Vita. Criminally insane price gouging on already proprietary memory cards and terrible storage sizes. The fact that a 4gb mem card exists is just mind numbing.. 4gbs.... Even back then 4 gbs at best will get you one maybe two sizeable games. For retros sure maybe about 6. It just doesn't make sense that they'd give their PSP redesign all this storage, but their new handheld console has they rob of this option. It's honestly crazy how much this would have gone a long way for the system.
I've had 4 of these for the longest time and use them often for power stone collection and other exclusive multiplayer games during my group's get togethers.
My favourite is the PSP. I do own a 3DS but I cannot softmod it. But I do own a PSP 3000 with Infinity Permanent 6.61. I actually did the jailbreak. It came with 5.03 OFW. I play retro games on it
Modern Vintage Gamer, I love your videos. Very chill and I really like how you explain things so that slow people like myself can keep up. Keep up the great work bro.
I remember back when i was 10 i have a psp go and i actually discovered that my teacher has a psp too! So we played games (MH3RD most of the time) after the class ended :D
I owned this since around 2010-2011 and I thought I lost it in a move a year or so ago and recently found it and it still working even after so long of not using it.
Mine's the PSP Slim. My OG one still works and I've got a 128GB MicroSD in there for a TON of games (seriously...stupid how much you can fit in there!). I've got a screen brightness plugin, screenshot support, emulators, etc. It's a good lil' system. I'd take the slim over the phat, tho. The phat is nicer in the hands for sure, but that 32MB of RAM isn't doing it favors...
I love the sound output on the original compared to other versions. Sounds amazing in the car. It onboard dac and amplified sound is great. Later models moved the processing to arm and it lost a lot of oomph
The biggest downside to the PSP Go is the propriatory SD Card. 16gb is fine for alls 8 and 16 Bit games, but if you want to put your whole PSP and/or PSX library on it you will run out of space very quick. It is possible to mod the system to use micro SD but I don't have the skills to mod it myself. Got mine for about 40€ in near mint condition btw.
@@greentray1231 yes, it's made by some Japanese guy big in the modding scene. Took about a week for mine to get here and it works fine after a finnicky setup. Well worth it.
Ali Niazi that is pretty cool, but it wouldn’t be so easy to change cards. I had a 128gb micro sd in my 3000, and it took forever for the psp to access it. It wasnt the card it was on the psp side. I ended up bumping back to a 64gb card, and I kept the second 64gb card in the umd door to swap out when I wanted to access the rest of my library. Maybe there is a solution if you wanted to cut files and compress them to DAX?
I'm pretty sure wololo.net is a an Age of Empires reference. Convert your psp go to run custom firmware today! Me: Can I please run these emulators? PSPGO: no Me: Wololo! (PSPGO changes color) PSPGO: Ok fine
@@ozzie_goat yeah i played it. But like maybe 4 matches. So basicslly not really. I played civ 4 more like 8 matches. So i guess wohoolo is a server or sumthing.
In the Age of Empires series, there is a unit that has the power to convert enemy units to your side. That unit starts the conversion with the enchantment "wololoooo"...
PSP GO has such an elegant design and it's an emulation masterpiece on top of the PSP and PS1 library, shame it didn't take off, same thing happened to the Sony Xperia Play, they were way ahead of their time, love their design and light weight.
The best PSP is a Vita. I got a Go thinking it would be an ideal portable PS1 emulator. No, it's terrible. The controller is a hand cramp waiting to happen. The screen is too small and not as clear as modern LCDs. The storage situation sucks if you need more than a couple GBs. The final nail though: That single analog stick and no L2/R2. The Vita is more comfortable, looks better, runs better, has more storage, plays PS1, PSP, and Vita games - and will emulate other systems better than the slower PSP. There's just not much there to recommend. The one sole saving grace for the Go, however.... Put it on a dock, plug in component video cables, pair a PS3 controller, and set the video mode to Interlaced. Now you get true 240p output on PS1 games. Woo! Just remember to pair the PS3 controller at home - you can't do it in a hotel room 2000 miles away from your PlayStation 3. Apparently.
The PSP can run massive storage with a MicroSD adapter. I have mine set up with 64gb of storage but could up that to 128. If you're on a budget and you want a great mod capable system it's worth looking into. Of course if you want more performance go for the Vita.
Still rocking my PSP 3000. It's a hard system to beat. If you have a cradle for PSP Go then it's really killer. Pretty cheap as well. I'm currently playing a bunch of action RPGs and some PS1 games but mostly I'm playing GBA, SNES, SEGA and NES on this beast. FBA and SCUMMVM are pretty good as well.
Great overview. Managed to find one at a car boot sale for cheap. Great device for someone who never owned a PSP there's a stack of not that old gaming to be explored.
Technically it's a great handheld, but I find it far too cramped to play on the console for any prolonged period of time. The PSP models before it were much more comfortable to play on.
@@ethan928 Depends on your needs. I prefer portables. I play with my Switch in handheld mode 100% of the time, while my woman plays hers on my damn TV all the time. It works out xD I guess I'm just primed that way because of my GB/GBA/PSP/VIta/3DS
Always loved the PSP... I also got a launch 1000 model and was always super impressed with the power of the unit. Definatley well ahead of its time! I actually got a PSP Go model quite recently so I could play Castlevania - Rondo Of Blood on my TV using the a Dualshock pad and once again the PSP is my favorite handheld in 2018, it is just so versatile and the weight and size of the GO are really nice. I also got a cheap PS TV (Vita TV) after watching your recent video and I am loving the PSP emulator on that. Sony are a great company but somehow mess up their marketing, the Vita should be kicking ass right now but they have abandoned it far too early!
I sure was!!! It was genius, pure genius! The cool flip up design was so sweet to me I was hooked. To be able to have all of those games at your disposal without having to carry around dozens of discs!!! The portability of the psp go was unrivaled... It was so small and the clever design still has a place in my heart.....
The Xboner Digital is stupid though. It's a console. It sits at home. It's basically the same size. It costs the same as its disk reading counterparts. It doesn't need to be lighter or smaller, because it's not portable anyways. You're just losing the ability to save hard drive space, save time by not having to download everything, saving data, having physical backups, and being able to watch movies on disks.
I know I didn't want it because I already had a collection of UMD movies and games. Most of which I still need to get rid of.. As for the Xbox One S Digital, I didn't even know that was a thing!
After busting open the Vita it's my go to handheld. SD2Vita with 256 gigs and I'm good to go. Loaded up with PS1, PSP, Vita SNES and a few other old games and I play it constantly.
man I remember when gamestop was selling these for like 50 bucks back in 2011-ish. I wish I had invested in a few of these, not because to try and resell them though, just to have a couple of backups in case my white psp go craps out and the price keeps rising on them making it harder to get another one.
@Rick Shaw At the time the go had came out I didnt really pay attention to it because I already had the 3000 which was still pretty brand new. I do recall the go being $250 but I dont think they sold as well as they should have. So maybe gamestop was trying the clear their inventory at that time.
@Rick Shaw I bought mine from ebay last month for around $85. I was a little worried about the slide mechanism too but it holds up pretty good as long as you take care of it. I have a psvita also but its not hacked yet.
You can install a permanent CFW like 6.61 PRO-C∞ I really don't know why people use temp CFW in 2018. IMO the gpSP kai 3.4 GBA emu is probably the best portable GBA emulator out there and its always my goto for playing GBA games on the go as i don't own a GBA anymore :(... ok theirs probably a better one on the 3ds but I don't own one of those eather.
IIRC only PSP 1000/2000 models can have the CFW permanently running on the hardware. 3000/Go/E1000 can't have the permanent CFW and need to use temp CFW.
@@Dekasi1112 - Outdated news. Use these instructions & files for permanent 6.61 Pro-C2 Infinity on PSP 3000 & Go; No E-series though. I have updated 2 PSP Go's successfully using this: gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-install-psp-6-61-pro-c-infinity-custom-firmware.468844/
Great video. I use my psp go all the time for single player classic emulation (connected to a tv). It plays CFW faster than the 3000 or slim series I have seen. Perhaps it had slightly better hardware with same specs (few months later). A new one is very expensive these days (300$) but a semi new one on ebay might due for half the price.
Sensei Jr. the psp 3000 is my favorite because it has; Easily exchangeable/upgradable battery With a sd adapter you can get alot more storage than the go (I wouldnt go more than 64gb) The 3000 is more comfortable to play for longer You can rip your umds to the pc with the 3000 I have the component cables for the 3000, but I dont much care to use them
@Rick Shaw - You got a bad one. 2000 series are great & easy to flash. 3000 series has a screen with color bleeding and what looks like scanlines that cannot be removed.
yes it's nice i have psp 3001 and it's good, bad things L button not work and square button work well but i think some clean to check what happend to L button and square work but need to really press that button
I've had a PSP-2001 for years now and I have never been too impressed with the performance of emulators on it. I am glad that we now have emulators that can run on OFW without any mods or hacks but the downloads for such versions are getting hard to come by last I checked.
I too turned my nose up at this back in '09 due to the lack of a UMD drive. Recently, I picked one of these up for the hell of it at a local thrift store for $10. Brought it home, loaded up the CFW, and I've had it on me at all times ever since. Super portable and capable of playing literally thousands of games. It's perfect!
Just got one today for 110 CAD. May 2021. Its awesome I am coming from a PSP 1000/2000/3000 and Vita 1000/2000 The GO is SUCH a unique console, and is incredibly portable.
I own a black PSP Go. I got it when it originally came out. Fortunately, it's in amazing shape. I have only been using it to play movies on it but I may go ahead & load the custom firmware on it & see what I can do with it. I would love to play Sega Genesis games, NES games, etc. on it. That would be pretty cool. Cool video. Thanks, man!
Ultimately the lack of a UMD drive and the tiny internal storage meant this was never going to work in the market place; it was an even worse move than Nintendo pulling the backwards compatibility with GBA games for the DSi and replacing it with gimmicks. Actually using the PSP Go also looks a lot clunkier than the PSP.
I know this video have a couple of years, but they are 2 mods available that is worth trying, the extended battery backplate mod (which i bought from a random seller from aliexpress the non 3D printed one) and the micro SD mod (either hardwired to the board or buying a flex, i would suggest buying the flex since it would less stress on the cable because of the bigger backplate)
Great video! If you want a permanently loaded cfw, you can install the firmware 6.61 and then flash the Infinity firmware hack. After that, you can install either the PRO or the ME custom firmware and configure the 6.61 Infinity loader to load one of them as default at bootup. I did this on my psp 3000 and it has been great ever since.
Thank you very much for another video full of useful information. Seeing what each one of these handhelds is actually capable of, showcased in a way that's clear and easy to grasp makes it a lot easier to decide if it's something that suits your needs or not. As I'm currently trying to decide which portable console to buy, I'll make sure to keep this video in mind!
I wish we had a Vita GO. We wouldn't even have had to sacrifice physical games this time round. But Sony only cares about blocking exploits on a console they don't even support anymore.
At 08:16 Lovely Pick with the PSP God of War Scene / Capture, this device runs it perfectly. :) Also huge thank you for all the work for the community over the years
If it had a UMD drive it wouldn't be a Go. ;-) At any rate, make ISOs at home on a regular PSP, then enjoy playing disc-free with the Go. Or even with the regular PSP - keeps your discs safe and saves a little battery power.
The PSP Go would have been the best if it came out 3 years later, to a fully grown PS Store and then Sony could've released the VIta as the flagship alongside the PS4, but oh well just a matter of timing.

The quality of your videos just keeps on getting better! I had also totally frogot about the PSP GO
2:59 16 MB of storage...damn Sony are teases!
I managed to get pong AND pacman on mine
He meant to say 16 gigabytes. I know, you were just joking. Lol
Yeah, and switch comes with 32...
@@pandabean thank God we can use mods to use normal SD cards. Can use up to 500 GBs.
I play retro games on it
psp is so ahead of its time
it came out in 2003
and here I'm still holding on to it after 16 years!!!!!!
Who's from 2020? Had 2 GOs, the first in 2018, and the second in 2020. Had so many regrets after selling it first time. Great handheld)
Rizki Maulana P that’s like dream come true!
I owned this since around 2010-2011 and I thought I lost it in a move a year or so ago and recently found it and it still working even after so long of not using it.
Thanks for this system the Xperia Play smartphone had a built-in Ps1 emulator
Bro, your channel is AWESOME. Very informative.
my favourite is still the original psp
Zewiq same.
better form factor, friendlier for the hands
Too big.
Thank god someone else loves the Go. Mine got alot of love after the microsd card mod. Love the videos.
Got mine for about 40€ in near mint condition btw.
m2adapter.cart.fc2.com/
Haha.. I was about to say... :-)
Ali Niazi interesting suggestion, is this the only spot I could get one of these adapters, it's so damn cool, never knew this existed!
Always a treat when you upload. Cheers!
I'm pretty sure wololo.net is a an Age of Empires reference. Convert your psp go to run custom firmware today!
Me: Can I please run these emulators?
PSPGO: no
Me: Wololo!
(PSPGO changes color)
PSPGO: Ok fine
I dont get it lol
@@TheSikedSicronic Have you never played Age of Empires 2?
@@ozzie_goat yeah i played it. But like maybe 4 matches. So basicslly not really. I played civ 4 more like 8 matches. So i guess wohoolo is a server or sumthing.
In the Age of Empires series, there is a unit that has the power to convert enemy units to your side. That unit starts the conversion with the enchantment "wololoooo"...
@@TheSliderW o lmfaooo i got it now. Thanks lmaooo😂😂
PSP GO has such an elegant design and it's an emulation masterpiece on top of the PSP and PS1 library, shame it didn't take off, same thing happened to the Sony Xperia Play, they were way ahead of their time, love their design and light weight.
psp libary soooo good . vita is way to go have the oled it's amazing 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥲
Can you show me an example of the interlaced screen?
What interlaced screen? You talking about the PSP or the Vita?
Same, its too small and it hurt my hands
Rick Shaw More like $70-$100 for a decent Vita, can't deny the Vita is overall better but a hacked psp for $30 bucks ain't bad imo.
I have 2 PSP's and Vita, for the rest of my life. Perfect little things to have when traveling or on hollidays. I love them alle 3 :D
Great video MVG
Still rocking my PSP 3000. It's a hard system to beat. If you have a cradle for PSP Go then it's really killer. Pretty cheap as well. I'm currently playing a bunch of action RPGs and some PS1 games but mostly I'm playing GBA, SNES, SEGA and NES on this beast. FBA and SCUMMVM are pretty good as well.
I still have a working PSP 1000. I still travel with it.
True. But in that case, you can connect a controller and tv up to it if you were to play for an extended period of time
@@ethan928 Depends on your needs. I prefer portables. I play with my Switch in handheld mode 100% of the time, while my woman plays hers on my damn TV all the time. It works out xD
I guess I'm just primed that way because of my GB/GBA/PSP/VIta/3DS
I own the PSP Go since day one. *hugs PSP Go*
One of my favorite Portable systems of the era. The Go was perfect for me.
People wasn't ready for the PSP Go.
2019: No one is ready for the Xbox One S Digital.
I hate the all digital xbox one S
There's a few of them on Ebay for around $80 or less
@Rick Shaw At the time the go had came out I didnt really pay attention to it because I already had the 3000 which was still pretty brand new. I do recall the go being $250 but I dont think they sold as well as they should have. So maybe gamestop was trying the clear their inventory at that time.
@Rick Shaw I bought mine from ebay last month for around $85. I was a little worried about the slide mechanism too but it holds up pretty good as long as you take care of it. I have a psvita also but its not hacked yet.
Your reviews are so neutral and lively. Much love from India.
I think adrenaline on the VITA killed this for me, it does everything the psp go does but faster and with a bigger better screen.
I thought so too, but then the PSP is smaller and lighter. I still have a soft spot for my PSP :D
@Vegan Pete PSP titles are loaded separately into adrenaline, and you can always create folders if your run out of bubble space
I totally forget about the psp go I need to pick one up asap. Since my fat psp is almost falling apart these days. 😂 Great video as usual!
I have updated 2 PSP Go's successfully using this:
gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-install-psp-6-61-pro-c-infinity-custom-firmware.468844/
GBA & N64 emulators were recently updated for PSP.
@@Dekasi1112 Of course they can have permanent cfw i have all three og models (1k, 2k and 3k psp) permanently jailbreaked with 6.61 infinity
Best PSP of them all (because of the internal memory)
Sensei Jr. the psp 3000 is my favorite because it has;
Easily exchangeable/upgradable battery
With a sd adapter you can get alot more storage than the go (I wouldnt go more than 64gb)
The 3000 is more comfortable to play for longer
You can rip your umds to the pc with the 3000
I have the component cables for the 3000, but I dont much care to use them
@Rick Shaw - You got a bad one.
DaedalusX64 had one, but the last update (just a few weeks ago) only works on CFW
Nothing about 6.61 Infinity?
Right? I have a Go perma-flashed with 6.61 Pro-C2 & Infinity. It works great.
All I put on 3000 and PSP GO is Infinity. I was surprised too.
2:58 16 mb of internal storage? hahah
it's for the firmware and saves.
@Vegan Pete but it's only 16GB.
Just got one today for 110 CAD. May 2021. Its awesome
I am coming from a PSP 1000/2000/3000 and Vita 1000/2000
The GO is SUCH a unique console, and is incredibly portable.
My favorite handheld in 2018 is my gameboy color and my everdrive gb lmao
A lot clunkier? That's the definition of a first world problem
Bought a go on eBay for sub $100.. came with a 16gb memory card. Score.
I actually bought a PSPgo a year ago and I still play with it every day in my daily commute :)
Actually, there is a permanent CFW for the PSP Go, thay even runs on 6.61. 🤔
Yep, had stability issues using network functions with it though... bit too crash-happy for my liking.
Great video! If you want a permanently loaded cfw, you can install the firmware 6.61 and then flash the Infinity firmware hack. After that, you can install either the PRO or the ME custom firmware and configure the 6.61 Infinity loader to load one of them as default at bootup. I did this on my psp 3000 and it has been great ever since.
linoxyard I do not use infinity because of the instability, thus I still do regularly cfw recovery stuffs when I am using it
0:06 That’s now how you’re supposed to hold it.
i still have my original psp that i got for christmas back in 2004 and it still works to this day :)
The PSP Go is the most comfortable emulation machine in my eyes.
Ps Vita all the way.
It can do the same as the PSP GO.
Only better.
But the psp go has a great design even after so many years..
:) Also huge thank you for all the work for the community over the years
Damn i'm still playing my PSP in public lol
Gotta represent bro. 🖒👊
Just modded my PSP yesterday! One of the best things I've done with a console in a long time.
Uhhhhhh was that AM2R on vita????? HOWWWW???
please anyone reply.. im dying to know too
It is a homebrew port, get it through the homebrew store on vita or look around tech James videos for the desktop one
With video outputting you can also speed up the process by just holding down the display button.
The PSP Go could have been the best if it had a umd drive
Wrong.. cartridge..
more like if it had a damn sd card slot or even regular mms like regular msm
umds are gross.
StarmenRock thankfully there's an internal SD adapter for it. A little hard to use, but works well.
If it had a UMD drive it wouldn't be a Go. ;-) At any rate, make ISOs at home on a regular PSP, then enjoy playing disc-free with the Go. Or even with the regular PSP - keeps your discs safe and saves a little battery power.
The PSP Go would have been the best if it came out 3 years later, to a fully grown PS Store and then Sony could've released the VIta as the flagship alongside the PS4, but oh well just a matter of timing.
sounds awesome. i was playing crisis core ff7 on my psp 3000. battery lasted about an hour or less but my psp was a bit older lol. nice review brother i will pick one up
*Every system needs to have Doom running on it*
I just bought a pearl white one for $100 in mint condition & it’s hacked. I’m so excited ! I remember wanting one back in my teenage years but they were so expensive.
The PSP go is terrible, because you can't play monster Hunter on it unless you have a really weird hand
