NonsensicalVids I'm really glad everything nowadays uses the standardised metric measurement of temperature though, means that I can watch American pc youtubers and understand the temperatures without being incredibly confused
At a certain point you don't need to estimate or translate the number into the other system. You just develop a feel for both systems, it's like a speaking a language, where you feel the meaning directly, and you don't have to first translate it into your native language. Once you know the general bench marks, like freezing temp, boiling temp, room temp, then it becomes pretty intuitive
I personally thought the thermal compound looked a bit heavy on both the CPU and the GPU....133F idle seems pretty high to me. If it were under load and it were 133F I wouldn't think to much of it. I know similar CPU's back in the day in a standard PC setup ran around 104f idle. Thing is on those console heatsinks in my experience they don't make the most snug fit with the chips in some cases, so if you have a bit to much compound on the chip there isn't enough pressure to thin it out enough to make good contact between the cpu and HS.
Great video. You can still buy an upgraded original xbox from N64 Freak by the way if this video has you intrigued. I think he's the only person still making them though.
Awesome! Thought about upgrading my XBOX for a while, certainly with additional RAM to give compatibility with those few arcade games that can run on these. I can see the benefits of the CPU upgrade for MAME for sure!
MAME = Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. It's basically imo the best multiple system emulator to be created. It emulates all the chips used within arcade machines and since many systems used many of the same chips, it enables MAME to support the whole range of arcade machines - pretty much anything that was ever in an arcade can be emulated by MAME. In relation to this video and the CPU / RAM upgrades - more processing power and RAM means better emulation performance on games that may lose frames or have stuttery sound at the standard 733Mhz, and the RAM opens up support for some of the larger games that a standard XBOX might not be able to emulate due to RAM limitations.
BGA I think! Pain for the average person imo - I would struggle with it for sure. To do something like that properly you need an IR bed or something to pre-heat the board, hot air to remove the chip (preferably with a proper hood - not just a cheap hot air rework station), and then you need to remove the solder from the board, get a stencil of the right type of that CPU, reball the replacement CPU and fit it with hot air. It is certainly not an easy process for the inexperienced. Personally I don't see the point in risking an XBOX to attempt the mod myself. Fitting additional RAM is easy though in comparison - I might do a video on that at some point.
Recently bought an XBOX that looked brand new on the inside, not even a speck of dust, and it had not been opened before. You can bet your bottom dollar that removing that clock capacitor was the first thing on my mind!
One thing I noted when you listed the machine spec is that if you could install Windows 98 on it that would be pretty much perfect for the level of hardware as standard.
Your channel has quickly become one of my favourites. I absolutely love the modding/emulation talk, especially the Xbox. Takes me back, that's for sure, though I screwed up and didn't back up the Xbox Dash like a noob so i'm permanently on UnleashX. To this day I haven't figured out how to get the old dash back, as well as the modded dashboards. Ah well, it was a learning experience way back then.
@@RowanBird779 4 years later, just wanted to say thank you for your willingness to help. I actually managed to restore it a couple of weeks ago after finding my EEPROM and being able to re-lock the HDD. Thank you any how!
I somehow completely missed this video when it went up lol. I do find the "they should have focused on the media player aspect, too focused on games" quote amusing given the Xbox One's launch
the cpu wasnt bad, its fine to spread paste even though i dont do it. science has proved that. The gpu annoyed me though because it was still dirty. Its honestly prob not that big a deal but why go through the trouble to not do it right? still love mvg
Those temperatures look pretty normal for a CPU especially in that era. When you convert it to Celsius it looks more like 40C to 60C which seems very normal to me. My laptop CPU is 50C right now...
Yeah 40C was not that bad as idle temp even if not that efficient considering that's a weak Celeron CPU, indeed very popular as the cheaper alternative to the late Pentium III/early Pentium 4, but outdated compared to the PC gaming already using early Pentium 4 above 2Ghz clock speed. Technically the Xbox was like a previous gen gaming PC.
I spent literally years of my life editing and coding Xbmc and slayers evo X bios code to distribute to mod chippers all around my city. Those were some of the best days of my life.
When the people started to miss there own Xboxes I was most impressed. It said we could get it done just like the people that made the console. How they did it is alot like how we can be alot better than our previous accomplishments.
N64 Freak makes these if you are hunting for one.i am not sure if MVG has one of the first gen of the friend tech or not, they had a media port in the back that was basically an extension cable for a mod chip. this one had it soldered right onto the xbox.
iVirtualPlays A CPU/RAM upgraded system certainly isn't for everyone, it's definitely for the enthusiast. I purchased one because I love the Xbox, and it's a cool, unique oddity to have in my collection.
I love the music from Pinball Dreams/Fantasies. In fact I really wish those games would get a remaster into HD as they are still great fun to play even with Pinball FX and Pinball Arcade out there.
+Modern Vintage Gamer -- Hey! This was an awesome vid -- it's super cool that you've chosen such an interesting, uncommon topic to share with us! Question about the way you applied thermal paste to your processor before re-seating the heatsink: I've always thought (and was taught) that when applying thermal paste, you should put a small amount (roughly the circumference of a dime) of the paste in the center of the chip and then let the bottom surface of the heatsink force the paste to spread out evenly along the the surface of the chip when they're pressed together, which supposedly allows for optimal thermal transfer AND helps ensure the strongest possible bond between the processor and the heatsink body. I was taught that this method was preferred over hand-spreading the thermal paste because hand-spreading could cause an issue where some of the spots on the surface of the chip, when mated with the heatsink, could end up with more paste on them than others, which could result in less-than-ideal thermal transfer between the chip and the heatsink, as well as sub-optimal physical bonding between them. *Therefore, I'm curious as to why you chose to hand-spread the thermal paste over the surface of the chip instead?* Is there some benefit to that technique I'm not aware of? Thanks so much!
I was really big into modding my Xbox back in the day. I installed a xenium mod chip on my 1.0 Xbox as well as a 300gb hd. I hit a memory wall with a bunch of Mame games, so I used a service that upgraded the memory to 128gb. I forget what company I used or what it cost, but the upgrade was amazing... all of the previous games that failed to work due to memory issues now worked fine. I still use this Xbox all the time, it’s such an amazing emulation station. Anyone that wants a fun modding project should seriously look into these machines. The emulators developed on this platform are some of the best I’ve ever used.
I wish homebrew devs would the PS3 possiblities to the limit and use the horse power of the console. A Xbox with that upgrade would bave been a dream bakc in the day.
Very cool this modded Xbox. Back in generation 6, I owned all consoles so Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube. This generation is my favorite and I still own a GameCube with many games.
Great video MVG! I luv the og xbox such a well made console that really benefits from modding. The DreamX-1480 an awesome upgrade- those homebrew games & emulators run well with the extra powaar! :)
I never did any of these mods to use my xbox for dvd, cd, music storage, etc. I just bought the remote control. It was my only media player for ten years.
I winced when I saw how you cleaned up the leaked capacitor's electrolytic fluid. Just use a q-tip and some distilled white vinegar, then let it air dry. That'll both neutralize the electrolytic fluid, as well as cleaning it up.
Also, spreading the thermal paste before putting the heatsink on results in air bubbles. Put a dab in the center of the CPU, placement of the heatsink will spread the thermal paste evenly and air bubble free. You can see this directly by taking 2 microscope slides, and trying both application methods out, spreading the thermal paste before putting sandwiching it between the slides will lead to very noticeable air bubbles, whereas placing a dot, and spreading it by sandwiching it between the slides will leave no air bubbles. That said, there are a few very think thermal pastes that you actually do need to spread manually, but those are pretty rare.
great video, man. I love how you montage'd the break-down and clean-up, but you actually showed it. Great filler music as well. Awesome and informative vid.
I was in college when these were being made and wanted one. We mostly used the XBMC and wanted 720p compatibility but also did some gaming on it for exclusive/nonPC titles. By the time I had the money for it FriendTech stopped making them. I hope Xbox soon has "standard" cpu/gpu/apus/ram again so they are up-gradable like this. Even if it requires removal and soldering chips to the boards.
I have always loved XBMC!! And I miss running it as my main media center. Would be awesome to replace the old Xbox (original's) hardware with hardware that can run in 1080p-4k, but still using the old XBMC looking software! Not sure if it's possible to emulate Xbox (original) games.. Yet. 🤔🤔
I remember cutting a broken xbox controller's cable and wiring a USB socket to it so I could hook up a USB drive with XBMC. Certain games would let you load a save file, which was modded to boot XBMC and let you flash it. It was so much fun to play around with.
It's so strange; as an adult I have a hard time getting interested in new games, but with emulation and the journey of homebrew I instantly get excited to play the classics once I have done the diligence and work to get there. I love the 3ds modding scene, I just think I ended up being a handheld guy at heart. I never would have guessed that when I was younger, but I have probably put triple or more hours into that scene. Learning is half the fun, I have 0 programming skills but I can read and follow directions really well lol:)
Do R/C! lol My eyebrow almost went into orbit when he mentioned the temps because most people use celsius when talking about pc heat. That’s well within safe limits if the xbox cpu is made of the same stuff as modern cpus.

Hay thanks Steve Benson. It is OGXBOX.COM my bad Steve Benson is one of the great people on there that helped me out as I lurk through the forum's & read alot of modding stuff from guys like him to better my skills
I'm also a "spread a thin layer of arctic silver" type of of guy, I guess some people just use a dollop and let the pressure of the heat sink spread the paste out...
Ultimately it really depends on the mounting pressure of the heatsink, though neither way is inherently bad. For laptops and graphics cards I like to make sure to spread the paste around first, but for consumer desktop CPUs it's usually not a problem with a dot or a line in the middle.
Prespreading is bad, as you have no way to know which parts of the heatsink require more thermal compound and which parts need less. You're also trapping air between the heatsink which doesn't conduct heat. No thermal compound manufacturer recommends prespreading their grease, except the liquid metal ones.
Sometimes you should pre-spread on the heatsink, especially if the copper heat pipes make direct contact on the CPU. There are usually gaps between the pipes so just putting on the thermal paste and letting the pressure spread it, doesn't work.

Hey. Would you be willing to share the custom CPU adapter board design with the ASSEMbler game forum guys? A few years back I sparked up interest in this console but seeing as how rare they are none there could get their hands on the custom board to clone it so we can recreate this beast system. Sure we have modern 1.4 GHz CPU mods but they just aren't the same as this one with the slight overclock and speed switch. If high quality pictures were shared of the adapter board (assuming it can be removed without destroying the console) were shared then someone could remake it and offer them for people who want this capability on their systems. The media key is not needed as it was really just a lockout system and thus not needed. The RAM mod is easy as anyone who can do SMD soldering can pull the mod off. We just need that board to exactly copy what Friendtech did for the CPU mod back in the day.
I've built a few dozen PC's in my lifetime, you don't have to spread the paste at all, in fact it's best if you don't. Simply put a rice grain sized bead of paste down, and evenly press the heatsink onto the CPU, the pressure will perfectly spread itself. If you pre-spread it, you create an uneventful surface (no matter how hard you try it will be ever so slightly uneven) and this could easily create air bubbles between the heatsink and thermal paste once installed. To test this theory, install it with both methods and remove the heatsink by sliding it off in one direction as opposed to lifting it vertically or twisting it. You will see streaks with the pre-spread paste because of it's unevenness, and should see smooth swipe with the pressure-spread method.
Don't spread thermal compound, use one single blob in the center. Some CPUs are concave others are convex. Thats why you should let the pressure of the cooler pushing onto the CPU spread it.
Complaining that the OG Xbox wasn't a media center is missing the point. It wasn't supposed to be a media center. I mean look what happened to the Xbox one after trying to be a media center. It kind of got stomped into the dirt. That's what made the Xbox 360 great. It was a solid console with good games and not too many unnecessary shit. I do think it would be cool to have 1 of these though. Still a lot of great Xbox games I want to play.

For anyone else accustomed to the graphics of the PS2 half-life console port, that must be the most god damned smooth I've ever seen Half-Life one on a console.
what please explain
@@cd123atd4e half-life and half-life 2 perform best on a PC. He was just admiring how smooth the ancient game runs on semi ancient hardware.
@Old Liquid Yes but the CPU was very strong
@Old Liquid Yes I know
I thought that just watching it now, it looks like its running on a decent pc of the time vs the ps2 port and its constant loading screens
I've learned more about the original xbox from you than from any other source, and I've been an xbox fan since the beginning, and have owned a modded original xbox for about 12 years. Most of this stuff I didn't even know existed, yet somehow you not only know about it, but own it, and know all the ins and outs. You are a treasure to the gaming community, sir, not just for vintage stuff but modern as well. Please keep up the great work. I look forward to your videos every week!
Denatured alcohol can also be used to neutralize the leakage from the capacitor, and is much easier and cleaner than mixing up baking soda and water.
i pretty much use IPA for cleaning anything electronic lol
Thanks for telling about the clock capacitor! I've got 3 original Xbox consoles that will get a checkup due to this!
133 degree F is fine, i mean the PS4 for example hits around 70-80 Celsius which is 20-30 degree hotter
NonsensicalVids I'm really glad everything nowadays uses the standardised metric measurement of temperature though, means that I can watch American pc youtubers and understand the temperatures without being incredibly confused
I know both as I know quite a few Americans, and after a while conversion just becomes a rough estimate
NonsensicalVids and it's fan is insanely loud as a result. Not good!
GadgetUK164 - Retro Gaming Repairs & Mods. Can you explain what MAME is?
Trohs Wehttam An Arcade emulator. you could search more info on google
One thing I noted when you listed the machine spec is that if you could install Windows 98 on it that would be pretty much perfect for the level of hardware as standard.
you probably can since it uses a standard X86 P3 CPU although the motherboard's bios probably isn't supported with windows 95/98/SE/ME/2000/XP
they actually got windows 98 and xp running on it. not very well though.
I can send you my copy, if you tell me what files you're missing I can send them to you on the weekend

*cringes at how thermal paste was applied*
I was about to write a very angry comment, thanks for doing it for me.
I was looking for this comment
It doesn't make the slightest bit of difference.
Yep, felt the same way. I knew there would be a comment already here. Haha
the cpu wasnt bad, its fine to spread paste even though i dont do it. science has proved that.
130 Fahrenheit is about 54°C
@@Deutschehordenelite Of course I'm talking about 40 Celsius degrees. We use the correct ones in Europe.
Thanks for the capacitor tip, never knew about it. Got it removed ASAP, and yes it leaked already, but no damage.
I spent literally years of my life editing and coding Xbmc and slayers evo X bios code to distribute to mod chippers all around my city. Those were some of the best days of my life.
Awesome. How was the pay like ? This is a freelancer thing, right ?
When the people started to miss there own Xboxes I was most impressed. It said we could get it done just like the people that made the console. How they did it is alot like how we can be alot better than our previous accomplishments.
This was my dream machine...you got a piece of art
This thing is awesome, I had only heard of these upgrades but never knew about what Friendtech did. Do you remember the pricing on these?
around $USD 500 iirc. Not cheap
N64 Freak makes these if you are hunting for one.i am not sure if MVG has one of the first gen of the friend tech or not, they had a media port in the back that was basically an extension cable for a mod chip. this one had it soldered right onto the xbox.
Steven Benson As a personal owner, I can vouch for N64Freak. His systems are outstanding.

Fantastic video, I never knew about the existence of this modded xbox by FriendTech, btw loved the background music.
Nice touch including Pinball Dreams mod while DreamX logo appeared :-)
not a day without Amiga
I love the music from Pinball Dreams/Fantasies. In fact I really wish those games would get a remaster into HD as they are still great fun to play even with Pinball FX and Pinball Arcade out there.
For years I wanted remastered games.
Some of them released indeed but time revealed to me that nothing is like the original :-)
Wow the ultimate homebrew Xbox! Thanks for sharing this. Seriously contemplated getting one back in the day.
Dude this console design is mad, love the idea of giving ol faithful more
power
N64Freak makes upgraded motherboards that run at 1512mhz. Technically those are the "most powerful" original xbox consoles.
I've wanted to buy one for a long time but the website making them went down a long time ago and it didn't seem like I could find this anywhere else.

First thing I noticed too! Best track on Countdown...
My favorite MegaDeth song is Sweating Bullets. w/b you?
VGFreak100 Holy Wars without doubt. Maybe because it was the first Megadeth song I ever heard, but it blew me away.
That's a good one!
Ooh! Another of my favorites is Kill the King.
I love this channel. It made me realize that original xbox is not dead yet and someone still cares.
Additionally: I am surprised that they didn't include a 5v fan on top of the heatsink, or a 12v fan running at 5v.
God I love these original XBox videos. Thanks for another awesome video and showcasing some homebrew in the process (HLx, etc).
I LOVE THIS CHANNEL!
Love restoration videos like these with older tech. So relaxing.
I was just jonesing for an MVG/Xbox fix - great stuff
great video, man. I love how you montage'd the break-down and clean-up, but you actually showed it. Great filler music as well. Awesome and informative vid.
Was really hoping you'd try out some of the more demanding Xbox games, like Half Life 2, Halo 2, Black, etc.
That moment when you realize that today's digital tv streaming boxes are more powerful than a game console from 2004...
from 2001
My watch is more powerful than an original Xbox.
I actually bought one of these back in the day and it’s the first time I’m seeing it pop up online. What a nice memory - as always great video! 🙂
Awesome music dude, almost the best I've ever heard for these types of videos

Nice. I just dug my DreamX out of a closet, full recap, XboxHD+ and Stellar chip installed. Works great!
I forgot this!! So much nostalgia. I wanted one of these so badly
This is porno to me :X:X:X I really want an upgraded 128 MB Xbox Classic and upgraded CPU.
Really interesting, thanks for posting. Your vids get better as you post.
Did he just spread the thermal paste with his filthy oily fingers? Did he just do that??
Well, he did just prior use an alcohol swab, so oil is somewhat less...I always used an old credit card to spread it around.
Haha ya that was great. Should probably ask Linus how to apply thermal paste

Wow, I had absolutely no idea that these kind of upgrades existed! Interesting stuff.
but can it run hl2
It can, and it runs very well.
Don't spread thermal compound, use one single blob in the center.
Some CPUs are concave others are convex. Thats why you should let the pressure of the cooler pushing onto the CPU spread it.
Plex is also a split off of XBMC, and from what I can tell, far more well known than Kodi.
Really digging the MGS 2 soundtrack in the background.
Kos4Evr i think the xbox 360 is backwards compatible. Not sure though.
Kos4Evr TBH, I think the number one turn off was the always online DRM.
That looks totally awesome, i want one so bad.

@@timbdotus Your point being? ESD brushes use carbon loading of the plastics to add a partially conductive path - standard toothbrushes don´t.
The reason I made my comment was to ensure epople use the right tools and don´t end up damaging their machines, especially as ESD can cause latent failure mechanisms through partial punch-through of the MOSFET gate. Source: IPC certified, senior member IEEE and 20 years of industry experience.

There is not enough power of 1.4 ghz tualatin on 133fsb to play 720p(Captain Obvious), i tried experement in my overclocked pc, even on 160bus speed!! I have frame drop to 20fps. 720p playble only in 2x-cpu tualatin system.
And about cooling, if you need easy skip temp to -5 or -7°(cel) you need scalping cpu, and change stock radiator to copper radiator it's very effective.
Сыч it's the lack of SSE2 that really hurts the video playback performance, a Celeron M 1.4GHz for example has no trouble playing back 720p video.
Yuki Saitou hmm interesting, mb you right about sse2, but athlon xp 2000+(1667mhz) has not sse2 to, and it can play 720p very well. I think tualatin cant play 720p because Slooow SDRam, on sd ram athlon cant play 720p to, but with ddr all good.

Nice, I could say that I’m very happy that I saw your videos and bought an OG Xbox again. I was playing 6th gen era consoles through emulators, mainly due to the fact that it was a hassle having to get the memory cards and inserting discs, but the Xbox OG doesn’t have that problem, since you can run everything off the HDD.
133 f is about 55 celcus. Nowhere near the danger zone
Most temps are celcus. I don’t know what the danger zone for that chip is. But its likely arround 80 to 100c. I am comfortable anywhere below 90c on my devices. 100c is about the temp for slow but perminant damage. At 95c i cut the power to the system programmatically
the pentium 3 will automatically throttle at 69C for the Tualatin core
You are one lucky bastard for finding one of those probably rarer than my shit I took when I was a kid.
