This was my favorite be system from this generation by far. Was so hesitant to leave my Dreamcast but ultimately was glad I chose this system as my daily driver.
Just a question. Why would anyone intentionally run a game from another region if they already publish the game in the region your console is for? If you're playing imports that were never released in your region that's one thing. At least for NTSC consoles it makes no sense to run a PAL game because they run at 50 Hz instead of 60 Hz.
Bro, THANK YOU for.. Great relevant content Great audio video Great editing Positive attitude Educated and technical info Variety Looking forward to another year of your videos. Thank you and HAPPY NEW YEARS TO ALL🎉🎊🎉✌👍✌💕❤🎊🎉✌
I remember people hating on the design, calling it a lunchbox... but to me it’s beautiful. Something about it perfectly encapsulates early 2000’s technology and design. It was pure fun. The whirring sound of the disc drive, spinning the minidiscs... reminiscent of when we used to have to listen to music on portable CD players. It’s bulky plastic exterior.. everything about it just screams early 2000s for me. It had one job; To play it’s library of games. That is it. It doesn’t play movies or music or browse the web. It just played games, and damn were they ever good. I feel as technology has expanded consoles and computers are now able to do so much that I miss the days where we had less choices. We made fun with what we had. We didn’t need to consume so many forms of media all from one device. Have less choices actually made your choice feel so much more personal. When I have too many choices I don’t know what to pick. Don’t get me wrong it’s great that we have so many more options now, but for someone like me who has ADHD. I cannot handle having endless choices at my fingertips. I will play 5 minutes of a game and switch to a different one. Even the wii, which plays GameCube games feels like too much for me. When I see the list of channels and on top of all the home brew options I put on it... it’s just too much. The game cubes console UI was totally optional. You got a start up screen then it threw you into the game.
I bought a Game Cube in 2004 and I sold it in 2009...I really regretted it . Last week I bought another GameCube and now I'm tracking down my fave games: Mario Power Tennis, Super Monkeyball, Mario Kart Double Dash and Mario Golf. Me and my mates had so many countless hours of fun with the GameCube, I still love it.
Great video! One tip I would add for those attempting a no-wire XenoGC mod, put a thin slice of kapton tape to cover the middle solder points before you place the XenoGC board over the solder points. This way, there's little to no chance that you will accidentally solder to the wrong points.
I remember playing resident evil 4 with my buddy back in the day. Graphics were mindblowing, load time quick, HDMI output for crisper picture, wireless controller, even add a hardcore PlayStation fan, GameCube was the bomb.
@@0x1EGEN Because the Wii's hardware is so bad, it can't even run some GBA games at full speed. My Wii lags playing the GBA port of Donkey Kong Country 2.
Dire, Dire, Docs that's probably just due to poor emulation. If a Wii can emulate the SNES version fine, it shouldn't have a problem with the GBA version.
Wow, I'm blown away. Because all this time, I (like many before this watching this video) considered Nintendo to be behind when it comes to hardware compared to Sony and Microsoft. I realize now that it was the complete opposite! Great video as always, my dude!
While it wasn't the most powerful console of the 6th generation (That was of course the Xbox), many people incorrectly assume it lagged behind the PS2 in system specs. The GameCube wasn't a slouch in the hardware department at all though!
As a GameCube fan myself, I'd have to admit GameCube was middle of the pack in that generation. It was ahead of the PS2, but behind the original Xbox. But the PS2 was cheaper and had DVD support out of the box, so it sold anyway. The GameCube was only a few million units behind the Xbox, it's just that Sony absolutely dominated that generation. It wasn't quite a Wii U situation.
@@fcukugimmeausername I disagree. Nintendo is the most innovative console maker. The Wii has motion control, the Wii U has a tablet controller, the Switch is usable both as a handheld and stationary. The DS has a touchscreen and the 3DS has a 3D screen. Microsoft and Sony simply update the graphical capability of their hardware and if they do something new it's because they saw it somewhere else.
The Nintendo GAMCUBE Games are among the best Nintendo Games.of All the times. But The Game Cube Console itself is the problem. 1 it is Too fragile. 2 The Disc loder Too fragile. 3 The Laser goes sometimes crazy. 4 The Mini Discs are really a Joke for an Adult. Nintendo should remake a new Nintendo Game Cube Console with a Normal CD format.
A shame I didnt see you mention what it takes to actually load software onto a chipped GC Yes you can load stuff off of SD cards, but first you need to load something that can load from SD in the first place. Swiss is the go-to solution but you gotta keep in mind that you have to use *something* to load that as well. Unless you're still keeping your DVD-RW drive around, and have some mini DVDs laying around, you're not going to get very far, unless you use an Action Replay disc (20 bucks and up, quite pricey compared to the modchip itself) Installing XenoGC will let you read regular size DVDs as well ( the GC laser has no issues reading those) but for that you need to either leave the shell disassembled, pry its innards apart so that the disc fits, or track down a very expensive 3rd-party shell that can fit DVDs. You can also use game exploits with a botched memory card, but to make such a card you need a homebrew enabled Wii. And if you have a homebrewed Wii already, what's the point?
It's not like Mini DVDs are that expensive. You can still buy stacks of them online for an acceptable price. And burning them isn't different from burning normal DVDs either.
I was thinking that throughout the whole video - why would I bother with a Gamecube if I already have a Wii? The Wii, after all, can load all of the software the Gamecube can, has far superior peripheral support(Plug in an external USB Hard drive right out of the box, and since it's USB, just add hubs if you need more ports)(Bluetooth connectivity is perhaps an underrated specialty of the Wii)(No need for a janky memory card to SD adapter if you have an SD card port built in), it is easier to hack(for me it was as simple as tricking it into loading an e-mail), there is an EVEN LARGER batch of homebrew available for it, and if that isn't enough, it can be convinced to run Linux - turning it into a fully featured desktop computer(if significantly underpowered - this particular mod is better suited for running utility applications like file and print servers).
Benedikt Müssig That is true, but Gamecube is extremely picky about the quality of the Mini DVD’s and most of the reasonably priced discs available these days simply won’t work. Finding the disks with just right attributes/quality (relatively cheaply) can be really tricky. And after you have your discs you probably need to tweak some laser pots to actually pick up the burned data... :( soooo.... not as easy as it seems :(
Use Maxell Ritek G04 Mini DVDs. They are dirt cheap and will work 100% of the time. GameCube is very picky with its discs. It is Ritek discs or nothing.
The cube is by far the best console ever made. Pefect controller, awesome gfx and so fast to load. There was a core few dozen games that are classics. I still play Rogue Leader and Burnout 2 a lot.
TheFissionchips I would agree... just not quite with the controller. the c nub did like to slip from your thumb a lot. or maybe just me? I have big hands so I loved og Xbox controller so lol
I know it's subjective, but .. the D-pads on the 360 controller and the GC controller? Awful! I'm going with Xbox One controller - I don't even own any xbox but I use it for my pc all the time ;)
@@Ixicrashmanixi I had the exact opposite issue, OG XBox controller was too big. I preffer Gamecube, but XBox One controllers are really nice as well (just not the elite version).
@@pt8292 Kameo? Really? I'd say that was a great example of exactly what he means. That game is extremely comparable to many games on Gamecube, like Star Fox Adventures, for example.

I don't care what anyone says. The Gamecube was my favorite console of that generation. Though I have to agree with you in that, I loved that generation of consoles.
I agree on all accounts (still love my PS2 though, and I won’t lie, I was super jealous of the Xbox’s built in hard drive... but it came late to the party so I like to think it had a little bit of unfair harfwarw advantage 😉)
@@ReedHarston I did like that aspect of the Xbox as well. Memory card hold a certain novelty factor though. I remeber just popping out my card and grabbing a game before visiting a friend who had the same console.
Yes, that is what I liked more about the PS2 (my brother's, not mine...) in the end. The hard drive was nice, but taking your saves with you on a small card was nicer, imo.
Good looking out on those pre-wired LEDs! I've modified a few GameCube consoles but still have yet to do the controller port LED mod, this looks pretty simple to do with those LEDs. Nice brief look at the homebrew on it as well, I've only used my consoles for GC or GBA games but I'll have to take a look into the homebrew selection soon 😄

Gamecube was just awesome. What the SNES expanded 2D gaming from the NES, GameCube did the exact same for the 3D gaming from the N64. So many great games on the system. Super Smash Bros. Melee, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 1: Remake, Luigi's Mansion, Star Wars: Rogue Squadrons 2, Tales of Symphonia, Zelda: Wind Waker, Mega Man X Collection, Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Pikmin 1 & 2, F-Zero GX & many more. There's so many good Gamecube games.
I got that Game from my Local Target (Which Permanently Closed October 15th 2018) in May 2007 when the System was Already Discontinued and when they were getting rid of their GameCube stock I took it home, played it, and Oh my God it totally caught my Eye Especially the Music at the beginning of the Game is very pretty it's my 1st Paper Mario Game I ever got During the Summer of 2007 those were good times good times
@@excelsciors it's certainly up there! I think Dead or Alive 2 is maybe slightly better looking, But SoulCalibur is overall just a lot more fun, and had a lot more to unlock. Man, what a great system!
Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart Double Dash, Mario Party 6, Legend of Zelda the Wind Waker, Pikmin 1, _Metroid prime!_ It was a great console. A shame it didn't sell well.
I’d forgotten about Pikmin. Another great game my friend had that I was jealous of... I so wanted it. And that final fantasy game I can’t remember the name of... that looked fun.
The GC is so amazing. It's so sad that it's one of the console that sold the least... The games is what matters, not the design or the disc capacity... (Even though games would benefits from it). GC had such amazing gems.

I just picked up a Game cube today 4 $32 with 2 games and a controller and all the chords. Learning that I can use it with homebrew Swiss made my day because now I can use it to emulate GBA titles. Thank you for us amazing video
gamecube is still my fav console, got it for christmas when it came out first and played wind waker on it. God i loved the graphics and controls and will never love any other console
The tiny, toy like appearance together with its excellent games give me so much joy. I can forget all the troubles from the outside world and just sit down and enjoy my time.
The GameCube was my second console after N64. I still have it. Silver. I haven't been able to sell it, but I'm not sure what to do with my old consoles until I figure out what I need to mod for some games and emulation.
i played gamecube for first time about 2 yrs ago and feel in love with it, the graphics and pretty much every game is geared around fun and quirky graphics and it's what a console should be like
I still have my launch Gamecube that I got when I was 17 years old with all my games like Luigi's Mansion, Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime 1&2, F-Zero, Wave Race, Pikmin 1&2, Star Fox Adventure, Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil 0 and remake, etc, etc.... It was probably my favorite 6th gen console, though I still loved my PS2 and Xbox.
@@carlbrianjenisch See I kind of got the opposite deal. Bought a gb player and the disc for like $25 from a retro reseller. His kid was running the store that day and had no idea what it was!
I accept that the GameCube may not have been the greatest console of that generation, but it will always be my favorite from those times. If I remember correctly, here in the US there was also a controller port adapter that would plug into your GBA or GBA SP, and some games would use the GBA as a sort of extra input. (Sort of like the Wii U's controller later on) Some games would use it to display map and inventory data, while others would have extra levels entirely on the GBA. A small game, Pac-Man Versus, made rather fun use of the gimmick, with the other 3 players controlling the ghosts, and the GBA player controlling Pac-Man. Animal Crossing had an entire hidden Island accessible with the GBA add-on, and numerous others used it. I think the Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures even had a mode for four players to use four GBAs plugged into the 'cube for a sort of Co-op mode, though this was a bit excessive, needing the four GBAs and four adapters.
I have to admit, that the best childhood memories i had with the Gamecube and N64, but especially the Gamecube and Super Smash Bros. Melee did it for me, with alot of priceless memories with friends.
I still have and play my gamecube to this day. Never got rid of it or sold it and always kept it in pristine condition so it looks like it was fresh out of the box still.
during the pokemon go era a couple years back my local park was filled at kids at like 1am. there was a large group where someone brought a gamecube and tv and were playing mario cart in a gazebo.
The Game Boy Player was so awesome. I still remember being amazed at how good GBA games looked on an actual TV screen. That was before the GBA SP, so I had only ever experienced Game Boy games on a tiny LCD screen with no backlight.
Hey mvg, maybe you could do a more in-depth video on the PS3, how to jailbreak cfw etc. I really enjoyed your video on the original Xbox and Xbox 360 and as a ps3 player back in the day I would really enjoy it if you made a video on it
I just finished all these mods on my model. Everything worked like a charm. I love how moddable this thing is. My only issue was the my Xeno GC had two red LEDs, so it seemed to not be working when it actually did.
Had my old gamecube sitting in a closet for years. I have a Wii, so I figured there's no need for it, but I hooked it back up recently and find myself playing GC games on it more than the Wii. I like the simple startup better. Plus I got a gameboy player to play my gameboy games. I know I can play emulators on my Wii , I have them. But playing the official copy is always better to me.
With cheap multi-disc games the GC’s 8cm DVDs weren’t really limiting it much, if at all. it also gave it a load speed advantage though you didn’t see it it most sloppy ports. The bigger deal with Wii was the lack of internal storage, and they weren’t the only ones to stick with DVD that generation (XBOX 360). What was really laughable was Sony thinking optical media was suitable for a portable (PSP vs. DS). Access speed is much more important for a portable played in fits and starts, solid-state is inherently better-suited to portability, and there was also the issue of it wasting battery life to physically turn a disc where the player gains nothing by having moving parts. DS cards could match the capacity of UMDs. About the only justification that remained is that it satisfied the “discs are cool” crowd.
“I new it was something special, when we took it out of storage in 2015, after almost 10 years in storage, and the SYSTEM DATE was still accurate! 😳😳😳” (-James)
I have dios mios set up on my wii, so all my gamecube games appear in the standard CFG menu, along with Wii games. It's great, but it requires a bit more work (just find "the ultimate dios mios tutorial" page on reddit.)
I purchased the Cube just for the Meteoid games. Love my Cube. Still have it. Works like new. Not a scratch on it. Love the led controller port lights. Awesome mod.
I am new to the Gamecube having missed it the first time around. My addiction started with a Wii U which I got last year followed this year by a Gamecube. The Gamecube sparked my interest in retro games which I missed the first time around. I now also have an original Xbox. Good to have more than one retro console. Also games are still fairly cheap even with current spike.
Just finished, right now, to soldering the Xen8 GC chip to my gamecube. It worked, I'm very happy. Not the better soldering I made, actually, it was my first modchip, and I screwed a little: first I tried to mod to the board, with no success. When I tried to remove the chip, some trails of the board came out... and a trail in the modchip melted to the point the copper joint disappeared. I managed to fix by scratching the board and the modchip until revealing a copper point, and soldering with wires. It worked, but not without some confusion of me: the lights were only red. At first, I thought it was a bad installation, but then, I googled and discovered that my chip is a generic one, that happens to not have the green or orange led, both leds are red. After some tests, I verified that it's working normally. Now, I'm feeling with courage to try a mod chip to PS2, but that it's another level, saw some videos, it look really hard. I already have the modchip, now I have to buy the console.
Look at you.. all astute and stuff ;) I'm sure your name isn't an accident lolz. Happy new years. Enjoy the awesome mods for ME!! All I modded is psp and raspberry pi. But hey. It's a start. I'm inspired to learn some soldering.. ✌🎊
Is there a console out there that DOESN'T have a homebrew and modding scene? I wouldn't be surprised at all if there were people out there modding the CD-i. I'll have to do a check for that once I finish typing this. Excellent work. I just found this channel about an hour or so ago, and I absolutely love it. EDIT: Took me about ten seconds. There is ACTUALLY a CD-i modding scene out there. Like... what?
I'm one of those people who played both and I much prefer the ps1 original. Gamecube is my favourite console of all time but, that version of MG wasn't as good.
@6:23 you stated you need a tri-wing screwdriver, not sure if thats all gamecubes as mine used the gamebit security screws (which luckily i was able to just melt the end of a bic pen and jam it in to make my own bit)

This was my favorite be system from this generation by far. Was so hesitant to leave my Dreamcast but ultimately was glad I chose this system as my daily driver.

Tbh they were risking nothing, they've made so much money from the nes/snes they could aford to lose 5 generations and still be alive.
Except for emulators
The GameCube was fantastic for its time, I absolutely loved it. Gave me two of my favorite games of all time, Resident Evil 4 and Metroid Prime.
Yep. And Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.
The Resident Evil remake and Resident Evil Zero were amazing.

Gamecube, Xbox and PS2 were easily the golden age of gaming.
All-in-one Gamer HD yes a lot of the best games came from that gen of consoles.
nope, i would go for mega drive/SNES as being the golden age.
@@33LB The SNES and the Sega Genesis are great consoles but its the 6th gen is where it truly shines.
Can't we agree they're all great? I own all of them now, Snes, Genesis, N64, PS1, Sat, GCN, PS2.
I don't have Xbox and Turbografx.
All-in-one Gamer HD Nope.
It's funny seeing you in USA using a Freeloader to run a PAL copy of Mario Sunshine, I use the Freeloader to run NTSC Mario Sunshine on my PAL GC lol.
Hahaha haha damn so funny :D
Show me your UB40 you Free Loader... ☺☺☺☺
Story of my life lol
I sold my GameCube 4 years ago, otherwise I'd be using the Free Loader to play all sorts of imported Japanese stuff !!
Just a question. Why would anyone intentionally run a game from another region if they already publish the game in the region your console is for? If you're playing imports that were never released in your region that's one thing. At least for NTSC consoles it makes no sense to run a PAL game because they run at 50 Hz instead of 60 Hz.

GC is still an amazing system. Even more so with the Gameboy player in the bottom.
The gamecube is most definitely underrated and amazing.
What about the Wii U?

Great video! One tip I would add for those attempting a no-wire XenoGC mod, put a thin slice of kapton tape to cover the middle solder points before you place the XenoGC board over the solder points. This way, there's little to no chance that you will accidentally solder to the wrong points.
I always found putting those mini discs in the console very satisfying
I remember playing resident evil 4 with my buddy back in the day.
Graphics were mindblowing, load time quick, HDMI output for crisper picture, wireless controller, even add a hardcore PlayStation fan, GameCube was the bomb.
A Wii is excellent value. Basically can do everything a GameCube can
You can’t use the Game Boy player, but otherwise yeah.
@@AwesumIndustrys Why bother with a gameboy player when you can just have download emulators for the wii?
Jason Lee he didnt mean that its a relevant point
This was Nintendo's last real attempt to compete head to head against other console makers.
@@fcukugimmeausername I disagree. Nintendo is the most innovative console maker. The Wii has motion control, the Wii U has a tablet controller, the Switch is usable both as a handheld and stationary. The DS has a touchscreen and the 3DS has a 3D screen. Microsoft and Sony simply update the graphical capability of their hardware and if they do something new it's because they saw it somewhere else.

the GameCube was an amazing console, i remember playing starfox adventures a long time ago on mine
I still love the GameCube! It’s still my favorite video game console ever!
@X D I’m glad I still have my GameCube.
A shame I didnt see you mention what it takes to actually load software onto a chipped GC
Yes you can load stuff off of SD cards, but first you need to load something that can load from SD in the first place.
Swiss is the go-to solution but you gotta keep in mind that you have to use *something* to load that as well.
Unless you're still keeping your DVD-RW drive around, and have some mini DVDs laying around, you're not going to get very far, unless you use an Action Replay disc (20 bucks and up, quite pricey compared to the modchip itself)
Installing XenoGC will let you read regular size DVDs as well ( the GC laser has no issues reading those) but for that you need to either leave the shell disassembled, pry its innards apart so that the disc fits, or track down a very expensive 3rd-party shell that can fit DVDs.
You can also use game exploits with a botched memory card, but to make such a card you need a homebrew enabled Wii. And if you have a homebrewed Wii already, what's the point?
The only thing I can think of using the memory card exploit for is for GBI. Other than that, it's better off to you the Wii
@Emil Vrana No not the one controller, the 360 controller is better
I know it's subjective, but .. the D-pads on the 360 controller and the GC controller? Awful! I'm going with Xbox One controller - I don't even own any xbox but I use it for my pc all the time ;)
The GameCube controller is my 2nd favorite right after the 360 controller. I just don't like the d-pad
@@Ixicrashmanixi I had the exact opposite issue, OG XBox controller was too big. I preffer Gamecube, but XBox One controllers are really nice as well (just not the elite version).
I honestly never knew how much GameCube games held up... The games honestly looked like the first 6 months of the Xbox 360's life...
Kameo alone destroys that notion.
@@pt8292 Kameo? Really? I'd say that was a great example of exactly what he means. That game is extremely comparable to many games on Gamecube, like Star Fox Adventures, for example.
Metroid Prime was considered the best looking console game at the time. Halo 2 was a close second.
Ah, now you guys have reminded me of two more games I still want to play...
gamecube was closer to xbox in specs than the ps2, the mini disc format of the gamecube was the only thing that held it back, graphic/audio wise.
I'll never get rid of my GameCube. I got it for my birthday when I was 8 (in retrospect that was probably so my sister and I would stop playing on my dad's GameCube). I revisit all my games every once and while and I really treasure all the time I put into it.

Wish you were my sister that's so cute haha awww
Good choice
Do a vid tutorial on iso images and homebrew if you havent 👍🏻 i missed out on that generation, but i got ahold of a gamecube with a damaged laser disc i want to put to good use

I think the gamecube and Dreamcast aged the best out of the 6th gen I know many people that own a Crt and play Smash Melee.
Melee doesn't count.. it may have as well had it's own console lol
Soul Calibur was arguably the nicest looking game on the Sega Dreamcast!
GC had such amazing gems.

sure someone else has pointed it out, but a quick correction: Super Monkey Ball 2 wasn't a launch title, but the first game was.
I always remember wanting to play pac man versus on the pac man world 2 combo disc, but I never owned a gameboy advanced lol.
I have to admit, that the best childhood memories i had with the Gamecube and N64, but especially the Gamecube and
Super Smash Bros. Melee did it for me, with alot of priceless memories with friends.

Sony: CD ------------ Nintendo: Cartridge.
Sony: DVD ------------ Nintendo: miniDVD, with 30% capacity.
Sony: Bluray ---------- Nintendo: DVD.
Seriously.
My dude are you still fighting the console war 18 years later
BUT..
Sony/MS: Bluray ---- Nintendo: Cartridge
Switch doesn’t require lengthy installs, cartridges/flash are faster than disc drives.
Emmett Turner largest nds catridge was 512MB and psp UMD was up to 1.8GB
Emmett Turner but yeah, carts are way faster
