    I am 73 years old and had the honor of listening to the music of David gates and bread in my younger years. I am currently doing some surgery for my hearing loss
    If things work out I can again listen to the great music of my time. May God bless the group bread.

      @@maryholliday5639 My favorite too but as a native Memphian, I'm biased. As you may know Memphis was his adopted hometown. (At the time of his death, Franklin, TN an upscale bedroom in the Nashville metro.) I saw Bread, one of my most favorite bands, on this tour when they played the Mid-South Coliseum, May 15, 1977. Excellent show; the Coliseum was well known for its great sightlines and acoustics.

    • @fwdthinker
      @fwdthinker 3 роки тому +4

      @@samstevens7172 I'm reading a biography about them now called "Bread: A Sweet Surrender". It sounds like it was a little of both. The label pushed Gates because the first hit was one of his songs; so they were hesitant to change the formula. But on the other hand, when they put out songs outside of the Gates formula, the public didn't respond as enthusiastically. Caused a lot of friction later. Definitely a good read if you are interested in what was going on behind the scenes. There was definitely a lot of drama around the time of this show...

    Bread formed in the summer of 1968 and released their eponymous debut album in 1969. It was an eclectic mix of ballads and more uptempo material. A fine album, although the singles Dismal Day and Could I failed to make an impression on the charts. Luckily for Bread, their next album, On The Waters from 1970 became their breakthrough album, thanks in no small part to the No.1 hit Make It With You. Manna, from 1971 made sure Bread was on a successful roll, as the single If become a Top 5 hit and the album itself went Gold. 4. album Baby I'm A Want You saw the leaving of Robb Royer and the coming of Larry Knechtel and together they cracked out probably their best ever album. 3 hit singles, among them the superb Everything I Own, would assume Bread would virtually go on forever but the next album Guitar Man(1972) would prove difficult to record as main members David Gates and guitarist James Griffin would occasionally not see eye to eye. A sixth album was set to record but was aborted early on and Gates would officially leave Bread in early 1973. Both Gates and Griffin would record solo albums in the mid 70s but none were as successful as Bread in their glory days. In 1976, Bread were reunited and would record their 6th and final, the rather fine Lost Without Your Love. The title track would crack the Top 10 but diversions again began to rise between Gates and Griffin and Griffin would leave the band during their 1977/78 tour. Fans were delighted as Gates and Griffin sat their problems aside for a Bread reunion tour almost 20 years later in 1996/1997. All in all, a superb band. Poprock at its finest and their songs are indeed timeless in their appeal.

    What's amazing about Bread is that although David Gates would write the bands singles in his balladry motion, Jimmy Griffin could write equally effective ballads himself and you'll find quite a few of them scattered across Breads albums. Likewise, Griffin would write the more rockin bluesy material but Gates would ALSO provide excellent uptempo songs on their albums! I love Bread. They're probably my all time favourite band. I'm a big fan of 60s poprock music but the 1970s with all the great Softrock bands, including Bread, America and Eagles man, they're just unbeatable!!!
