Jenovi - You admit you pre-ordered the system, but haven't been following the progress. As such, you have 13 minutes of largely inconsequential waffle, plus assumptions and inaccuracies.
For example, the boxes don't include "download codes". As for myself, I don't fit into any of your categories. Personally, I was looking forward to it originally, but after everything that's gone on (which I've detailed in my videos, along with what's actually in the box), I've realised it's turned into a scam and everyone should get their money out.
@@DVDfeverGames 🤨If the box doesn't contain a download code, then why is there a card contained within that box that generates a code to download a game (the only way to play should these become playable)? Are you saying it's not a download code because you don't need to type that code in physically? I'm not even sure that's accurate because there's a larger series of numbers on the back of each card that I'm sure serves as a backup should the "Tap" feature fail. Maybe consider rewatching this video, pondering what I've said, & not spamming my channel with the same comment. Another PRO TIP, avoid trying to hijacking a top comment because you think you've "got someone" and everyone needs to see what you've got to say. Don't bother replying back, I'm not interested in holding a conversation here.
@@Jenovi It sounds like a serial number, but you tap the RFID chip to activate the download, if it ever comes out. The number is academic anyway, since it won't come out.
PRO TIP: Stop being all holier-than-thou and take some criticism that you didn't make as good a video as you thought.

I think this is a perverted definition of what we expect as a "physical copy". I think most people expect something on a pcb/disc, not a plastic card that requires internet connection.

That are according to Intellivision's eCommerce policy, are under no obligation to provide the downloads to. So if -Fox n' Forests- Finnigan Fox somehow falls though and never releases, the collectors are now proud owners of RFID cards that lead to _nothing._
Tallarico was adamant to the last that this IS physical. That’s how denuded that guy is. How much of a cheap huckster he is. He was either lying through his teeth, or he’s stupid enough to think a download code in cheap cardboard is actually physical.
One point that should of been brought up, in the fine print Intellivision does specify that you do not own the game until it is OR IF IT EVER IS available to download. Their is no guarantee that these games will ever come out.... so you could just end up with the box and the coin and card even if the system releases.
I mean, that's all I have now, so I couldn't be any more disappointed than I currently am.
This is true. It's in the legal fine print... it very sorry says that you are NOT buying a game but in fact you're only buying the physical box and it's contents. The fine print very specifically says you're only going to get to download the game if and when it comes out. Really scammy.

@@pferreira1983 Not sure how it can be compared? First of all, where is the console? Second, nobody wants RFID cards that don't contain the actual games. If this whole project goes under, (and it basically already has at this point), these "physical" cards will be useless and worthless. Intellivision isn't going to appeal to the younger crowd that wants a PS5 or Series X console to play the latest RTX on games. It's for the older gamers for nostalgia and collectibility. Nothing but gimmicky crap has been sold for the Amico at this point. It's time to move on. Garbage like these cards with useless coins and paper thin box cases is just Tommy's way of trying to get as much money as he can before he declares bankruptcy, goes radio silent, and deletes his social media accounts. Only shills cling to this project with their desperate hope that there will ever be anything seen in the future. Face it, this is Ouya 2.0
I don't think that us so-called haters want this thing to fail. We just honestly can't fathom how it could possibly be a success.

To be clear, those groups were generalized in an effort to explain that there's a massive group of folks not invested in the info being laid out. I think the Amico finding success is a hard road ahead, and these missteps will continue to reduce it's odds.

From that footage of the presentation, it looks like Tommy decided earlier that week to launch a console, then made the presentation on the plane ride to the convention.
That made me laugh.
He thought the miserable quality of visual presentation of that conference.
The Amico makes the Ouya look like a masterpiece!
At least the Ouya could be used for emulation.
It makes anything that got released look competent.

I follow your channel. What are your thoughts on the Amico? Intellivision was my first console in 1981 and I have a large collection, but I’m a bit on the fence since I preordered the Founders Edition.
I was originally interested on this console because I thought it was going to focus on creating quality 2D pixel based games but later on I found out it wasn't a product for me. I learned about it from being subscribed to a bunch of smaller retro video game channels on UA-cam that Tallarico reached out in their comment section to promote the Amico by giving them long interviews or offering them to visit his home, including a Ferrari ride. It was clear how manipulative this was from the get go because all of a sudden they'd mostly only talk about the Amico and no longer cover retro games, that was my main interest. These channels were impressed about anything Intellivision announced and wouldn't be critical even when the president of the company didn't behave in a professional manner. I unsubscribed from all of them because of how dishonest they were with their audience, mirroring the president of Intellivision. Your video was the opposite of that and it's quite refreshing and I hope it serves as an alert to inform the gaming community. I'm glad that there are still UA-camrs like you who care about their reputation and viewers. Thank you!

I don't think I've ever gone as cool on a new console platform as I have with the Amico. At one stage, it looked so interesting that I'd actually started saving my loose change to buy the system. But then gameplay footage started to show up online. And then so much of what was initially promised started to be undermined.
Long story cut short: I doubled the money I'd saved and spent it on a new CD player instead. I feel it was an infinitely better use of the funds!
Everyone should own a CD player. Solid move on your part.

I'd say you are missing group #4... which is 99% of the population of gamers and non gamers who never have and never will ever hear about an Intellivision Amico. It's extremely niche even for most hardcore gamers.

Even the $10 price has an * in the most recent months. The * being that $10 is the max price for games AT LAUNCH. Tommy let slip a few times that "bigger" games like Night Stalker and Cloudy Mountain will cost more. That's a real bait-and-switch considering half their marketing is the false narrative that to play games on Xbox, Switch, Playstation will cost $70 a game (they conveniently ignore the fact there are thousands of games for those system that are $10 or less).
Is that why I keep seeing this comment about it being a better deal than current gen systems? These are apples and oranges. There's a ton of difference between a $70 Red Dead Redemption and a $9.99 Under Tale in development cost. I can name a ton of amazing games I've purchased new for under $10.00.
@@Jenovi The Amico is all about apples to oranges comparisons. To listen to Tommy tell it, it costs over $1000 to play an eight-player game on the Switch, but only $250 on the Amico. Their logic is you can use your phone as a controller on the Amico and they contend every Switch player must have the full official joycon. They don't consider that the joycon can be split in two for games like Mario Kart or Clubhouse or that there are $20 controllers. When talking about the Xbox, they pretend the only controller you can buy is the $150 elite controller. And even then they have to totally lie about the Amico's capabilities because you can't actually use 6 phones at once. You're limited to four controllers and four phones, so even in their optimum scenario you'd have to buy at least two $80 Amico controllers (yep, they cost more than the official controllers of their competitors). All their claims of "Everyone on UA-cam lies about our prices" is just pure projection.
Well I guess now we wait for the ceo to show up here in the comments.
A few months ago, that's exactly what he would do, with hundreds of words in his replies. He's tried to be less of a reactive troll lately, so maybe we won't get a special visit.

The whole racket has MJR and John Riggs and SNEStastic as it's apologists, given their large audiences, they have a responsibility to denounce the product and everything about it's marketing and it's p1ss poor end-product.
As for Tommy, he should be ashamed of himself, and should make amends before his repuation in the industry is destroyed permanantly.

Never heard of SNEStastic. Don't really watch MJR, but Riggs seems to have a different approach than most. I haven't watched any videos on this, but will assume he's just excited to check them out. Nothing wrong with that. Not everyone is going to realize this is an issue or want's to make a video about it. I certainly can't toss shade at these two based on not discussing what I did here.
Riggs made a video about this same package. He was sent it for review after hanging out with Tommy and another guy playing that -trials- Evel Knievel game. He liked the packaging and kind of downplayed the dL code on a card aspect.
But several months ago he made an extremely misleading video about 5 reasons not to buy the Amico. He then proceeded with the hard sell and basically implied that it was going to be great and if you disagree then you’re an idiot. That’s the day I unsubscribed to him.
SNEStastic removed his channel from UA-cam but before he did, he spun off another channel called The Amico Kid to upload his Amico-related content. He and several others received free merchandise (hats and t-shirts) from Intellivision as a thanks for their support. Related to that, a few of those people appeared in their event videos (Crayola, etc.) without also disclosing that some are investors. I believe that would make the SEC very unhappy.

Personally, I have never believed in the idea that the console would never release. I have been always skeptical of it's performance vs older consoles, such as the Wii and now its contemporary the Nintendo Switch. But stepping away from this, I see that the drama is increasingly about egos and personal back and forth (on both sides), with very little being spoken about the console itself. If this much larger 3rd group (which easily consists of 99% of Intellivision's potential target market) places their focus on the console itself, many will come to the conclusion that has been described in this video. Even more so now with the release of these games, the console itself not having a serious release date.
This video will age well.
It's not a good look for the company.

I have a strong feeling these will be the only games that come out and will remain one of those oddities with limited value and appeal, like a full set of Aladdin Deck Enhancer games
I hope not, but these things don't bode well for the long term.
Aladdin Deck Enhancer games will actually run on something, however. It still remains to be seen with this "media" whether it is anything other than cardboard swag.

For what it's worth I was ambivalent about the Amico for the longest time..until I read some unhinged non-gaming-related commentary from Tommy which made me never want to consume any media he was involved in.
I can fully understand. At some point, people want to divorce themselves from the perpetual drama, regardless of who is starting it.

So sad. They blew it. Instead of delaying or telling the truth, they made an conscious effort to play with words in order to "keep promise". If this is considered physical media then a prepaid card containing a download able code is the same. Which obviously isn't. SNES cartridge: physical media. Optical disc or card that unlocks a download: NOT physical media.
Also this cunning scheme highlights one of the problems the community created: having a box in your room being as important as having a game by itself. The library shelf syndrome: look how cool these boxes look in the shelf. That behavior is what scammers notice in order to sell BS.
Such a great video brother... very much the video I wanted to make. I definitely fall into the category of people that don't hate the Amico but have zero nostalgia for it. It's nice to hear this opinion from someone who pre-ordered the console and games, appreciate the honesty
Great video. Really poor sales tactics in my opinion. Quite liked the look of the Amico but those game boxes look terrible and just being a download code that is currently useless is extremely poor

I will admit I am part of group #1 camp, but I'm always willing to have a respectful debate with people on the other side, the problem is most Amico fanatics are not willing to. Criticisms against Amico automatically makes you a "Hater". You can't reason with people who think like that.
Tommy forced people into one camp or the other…the people that are “objective” have just recently started following this saga or have known about TT’s project but didn’t & don’t follow it.

Yeah, I was never interested in this console but gave it the benefit of the doubt at every turn. Even when it was behind and missing deadlines. Making hardware is difficult. But there came a tipping point where it became very obvious that Tommy was lying through his teeth about so much shit and the state of the console, that it just became unbearable.
I saw how that happened to you -- by asking some simple questions, you offended His Tommyness and he lashed out at you. He thinks he can charm or bully his way around the reality that his team is lacking in talent and resources and that this project is dead on arrival, if it arrives at all.

It has been brought to light in recent years that quite a bit of Tommy's music isn't actually made by Tommy. It's kind of like saying, "Simon and Schuster are really prolific writers." Simon and Schuster is a publishing company, they don't write anything, they print and distribute other people's books.

I like your channel. I am glad I watched this video. At first I was leaning towards the idea, that clearly you must not of been all that crazy about the Amico to begin with. But, when I got to around the 7 minutes mark and you showed that in fact this “physical” copy is no more than a digital download, I was shocked! Really crazy!

This is the only video I've seen from someone that pre-ordered the console and doesn't think it and the games are the greatest thing since sliced bread. Great thing about this channel is that Jenovi tells it as he sees it.

I grew up playing Intellivision and was stoked to see the Amico. Immediately pre-ordered. Now 2 years into waiting for a console I doubt I'll ever get, I'm really bummed it's turning out to be such a mess. I'm not a gamer now, not a hater and definitely not a fanatic. Just thought it looked like fun. Your beef with their "physical game" is on point. They should have never sold it as a physical game.
For the same price as an Amico, you can get an Oculus Quest 2 with Resident Evil 4 VR.
That is a dang fine game system too.

Spot. Friggin. On. I don’t want to see these smaller console makers fail but they also need to start doing better practices in production and marketing. I think being honest with folks about things would have been better thank making so many empty promises in the hopes they get backing. The Coleco Chameleon should have been more than enough of an example for consumers and producers of these types of goods.

@Sensible Person exactly why the Amico has more loyal fanboys than the Chameleon. If it were Tommy that was making Chameleon, the Atari Age forums would be praising instead of criticizing it.
The Amico is the definition of a wildcard, I think that is the one thing all three camps agree on.
I would say I was more neutral on the console, curious personally on how it performs and what it offers. However bullshit like this and a lack of transparency is pulling me towards a negative viewpoint.
I mean I hope for the best but Intellivision really made some bad moves and they deserve to get backlash in some manner. I’m not talking overkill extreme hate, but criticism to help show Intellivision that they need to make improvements. To help make it a better product for everyone!
The best thing they can do is recall these boxes and apologize at the moment with this situation.
However with their actions as a company, I’m skeptical that will ever happen.
I would be happy with transparency moving forward. I think that's a reasonable ask but I won't hold my breath for it.

Sadly I believe Tommy really wanted this to work but grossly underestimated how much money and how long it would take to get it to market. The problem is getting to 90% done is much ‘easier’ to accomplish than the last 10% and I don’t think he has the $$$ to see this to the end.
I hope we see it hit market and expect it too, I'm just not sure it's going to find success moving forward in this manner.

Perhaps now you might appreciate some of the people in group one. Sure, there are a lot of people who get carried away, and get lost in drama, but many more reasonable people take a dim view of Tommy and Amico precisely for the reasons you cite. This company is deliberately doing their best to con low information customers who don't have time to follow every scummy tactic, broken promise or revised statements (read lie) and ride a wave of assumptions based on flippant claims and a retro inspired console name that has nothing at all to do with the unqualified start-up pushing this thrice delayed console. I think a lot of these people are just trying to be a voice of reason amidst the deafening noise of some really strange cult like fan boys, who as you said, will herald this thing as the second coming no matter what sleazy tactics they use, or how much is disappoints people with money invested.
I also was at the PRGE announcement in 2018 and spent time taking with the executives at their booth, including Tommy. Like you, I was really looking forward to this. And like you, I've become disillusioned by the deceptive tactics.
Tommy is in a real pickle. He needs more money, so he can't be honest about the true state of the system and games because he needs investors. But by not being honest with the fans, he's crafting a lot of bad will.
I think the reason they sold the physical media as they did is because the games aren't done, and they need money to continue developing them. That's why they didn't even include a physical manual, only silly pack ins that could be created independent of the actual games themselves.
If they had something to show, they would show it. I haven't heard much about the highly curated demos they've been showing around the country, but I'm skeptical because it's all super quick cutaway footage. There nothing really showing regular people turning on the Amico, loading a game themselves, etc. It makes me think they have developer PCs running these games with dummy consoles just for show.
I really hope they succeed with this. But I'm really more likely to spend my $300 on a Switch at this point.

@@Jenovi If they are doing the Wizard of Oz thing with hidden PCs actually running the games at the live demos, they wouldn't be the first. I don't remember the details but one of the older video game console companies did this for their in store demo cabinets so the games ran better than they would at home. I wish I could remember more details about this story.

I don't have the console, just boxes for game that will be releases at some unknown date in the future. It may be just fine, but it's a bit early to say.

Calling a card with a digital download code for a game that may never be made for a console that doesn't yet exist a "physical version" is like calling a....you know what, I can't even come up with a comparable analogy for this. I would say it is like calling a scratch-off lottery ticket a "crisp 100 dollar bill" but at least with a lottery ticket, you can get your money right away.
You certainly know what your getting and that you're being taken advantage there too.

There are a bunch of people that I jokingly call a cult. It takes more than just liking the console to become a member though.

It's pretty clear to me that quite over the past 2 decades I've become more and more skeptical of almost any company that wants to bring out any sort of console, especially a "retro" themed console. There are just too many horror stories, broken promises and some outright scams. It's sort of sad to see the Amico go down the route they did but honestly it's not that surprising.
I've been quite happy with emulation via a dedicated PC in my living room for my retro gaming needs. I've been gaming since the original Atari VCS/2600 days. While period correct hardware is cool being able to play everything from the 2600 all the way up to currently the PS2/Wii era using one machine also has its benefits!
I have never seen an advertisement for the Amico outside of the emails I get from them directly. How do they expect to be successful if people don’t know about their product? Even GameStop doesn’t have a poster or anything up in their stores and they are supposed to be selling the exclusive purple edition.

This was a very fair video. I appreciate all of the points you made. This console is just baffling at this point. I wish the facts were different, but it really seems like the console is just smoke and mirrors.
The console is certainly real, but there's some massive red flags. We shall see how this progresses. I still have my order in.
What Intellivision has done is reprehensible, and I hope everybody who bought these is filing a complaint with the FTC.
Tallarico should made this console built to be a HUE card type console......that way he could sell physical HUE cards like the TG-16...... which is kinda what he was trying to do in a scummy way.
So what's it gonna take to get you into the first group you described, the people who notice and comment on every dumb thing this company has done since the beginning? They already took money from you, and given you next to nothing but hurt feelings in return. It's not going to get better than it is right now -- when there are still a bunch of people who think that something good might come out of this. It's all downhill from here. $250 Astrosmash and some downloadable games. Woooo.

I suppose I'm in group 3. The big thing for me is...games. That, and the value. All the rest of the nonsense is just chatter to me. I came from the NES era like most of my fellow gamers around my age, so seeing these recreations of Intellivision games really doesn't do much for me. The only game that vaguely has me interested is Earthworm Jim 4, and the amount of information we've received about it leads me to believe we are very, very far away from seeing it, if at all. This was a pretty thorough breakdown of the game boxes and practices coupled with info from Tommy that really doesn't hold up with the original vision, especially since the games aren't physically there and are reliant on a code to download. I was skeptical but optimistic for the Amiico previously but honestly...after seeing this, I'm leaning more towards not buying it. We'll see what happens when the games actually are playable. The idea of shipping games long before a system is kinda stupid IMO.
A friend asked if I planned to review these games. I had to let them down gently as I can't review games when I only have the boxes. 🤣

I know that group #2 has taken the bait in defending the console and the company so much. On the other hand, I have at least a small amount of sympathy for them. Because they are clearly trying to get their name out there, and probably thought that a gaming “rockstar” with industry experience would help them attain more legitimacy. That’s the reason they are mostly niche channels. But there are a few big channels that have made videos on Amico before and their viewers are very skeptical. For me I think even the Amico could have some value, but IMO doesn’t justify the price tag. The price feels too heavyweight for a console marketed for light family/retro gaming.
Price could certainly been a problem.
If it had kept its original $150 price, $7 games, AND the physical game carts, there would be a lot less controversy.

If this was a family or retro fanservice the prices wouldnt be inflated like this, usually manufactures lose money on the console while getting it back through fees on releasing games for it,here tommy is gonna make a 100% profit on each console. Very bizarre. The library is what should carry the console profits, unless he asume it wont have any AAA titles or console sellers.

I was originally interested in the idea of a modern purpose built 2D game system, but I think that was the first part of the concept to be cut. since then it has been nothing but downhill with repeated big promises from tommy and nothing really to show.
unfortunate that the cool cover art which was designed for those games is stuck on what appears to be food service level card stock. it's kind of fucked up to me that we keep seeing these old brands being summoned from their graves to sell us future litter, just for shits and giggles.

This is fantastic. I love hearing an honest opinion from a true retro fan who went into this optimistically.
Since the Amico was announced I had a bad feeling. Things like these tend to be big rubbish. Just look at other failures like Zeebo, OUYA etcetera which were made for a niche audience.
Those things use to be cheap and nasty but being sell like premium products because they're "out of the main market". In cases like these, it's really preferable to opt in more conventional ways to do the same things that those rackets promise.
Niche audiences are niche for something. Try to putting them in a massive state when the market it's not prepared it always going to be a disaster.
I bought the physical copies more as a collector's item than anything else, I didn't really think about whether they were physical copies or a download. While I fall into more of your group #3, I still look forward to the system. While they have certainly stumbled on several things, I do cut them some slack as they are trying to release a brand new video game system at about the worst time possible in history, except perhaps 1983. I've watched the game play videos that came out after this for Astrosmash, Tank Battle and Shark! Shark! and I will be pleased with all of them. If it turns out to be vapor ware, I guess shame on me. I'm confident those special edition physical copies I bought will actually be worth more if it becomes vapor ware and I won't actually lose any money. Basically, I hope they succeed and I'm not overly bothered by the "scummy" marketing because it just doesn't bother me enough one way or the other.

Things will get more interesting as Intellivision plays its hand until the console finally launches. If the Amico can cater to a group of gamers that may be new to gaming or neglected relative to what is currently offered, the gaming realm is much better for it. I truly hope They are taking people's opinions into consideration for the next moves coming up. Their success depends on gaining the trust of consumers, not the ire. I really like how you broke down the groups of people this console is catering to. I feel that you're spot on.
Alas, this is exactly what I expected to happen, given that even last gen consoles were only shipping fractions of a game on disc and requiring you to download the rest (I didn't bother buying the Spyro collection for this very reason). I never expected Atari or Intellivision to be different, even though they NEED to cater to the specialty market to get their foot in the door.

Very hard to discuss something like the Amico until you see how they are selling the product and have them in hand. I fully know what you're talking about too. NBA 2k18 was essentially a download code on a cart as they didn't want to pay $$$ for a cart large enough to hold the game. I really hate that stuff.

Websites listing it for preorder say December 2022. Intellivision themselves say sometime in 2022. Cult members say early 2022. There are a few ultra-orthodox members claiming end of this year, hoping for a Christmas miracle. But we all know the truth about Santa... he can't travel this year due to Covid restrictions.
