It depends on the situation. If someone is only performing one song on a TV show, it's understandable that they won't do an extensive sound check and would rather opt for a lip sync. However, a concert should be mostly, if not entirely, live.
i don't know? It kind of matters. Primarily if everyone's not getting paid for their part in it. especially the real singer. Before music videos, you didn't really know what the people looked like so why should it really matter? They've got the incredible voice. Pop Music seems to like the package deal. Coming out of the grunge era I do feel a bit cheated, I definitely wouldn't want to go to a concert with someone lip synching. I do feel bad for Fab and Rob though, they could never really get a job in entertainment again after that, and it's a waist of two really good looking men. Everyone should've been after the producer. But alas, news reporters only see the face.
Agree. Most groups, especially K-pop groups, lip sync or sing over their tracks. It’s widely acceptable because there is no way they can do all the dancing and singing at the same time. They are human!
I was just thinking the same thing however this is how the spot light is look how much we loved Whitney Huston and as soon as they found out her drug problems the just dropped her and Michale Jackson's sisters nip slip. This world checew you up and spit you out life .
Look, I bought Fab and Rob’s record after Milli Vanilli and it was really good. They sang on this record and did great! As for Milli Vanilli it was a pop band that made great records fronted by Fab and Rob who danced and did athletic things on stage that people enjoyed. The studio singers for Milli were heavier and older and less conditioned and would be having a lot harder time trying to do Milli’s live show. Also, lots of bands have multitracked vocals meaning a singer to boost a voice sings over themselves as well as singers have been known to have other singers sing with them at the same time to strengthen vocals. Milli Vanilli was not a big deal because people heard real talent on the record and saw real talent perform on the shows.
Seems most every comments are saying lip syncing is ok or acceptable. What people are not understanding is that Milli Vanilli was lip syncing some other singers. They did not sing the songs in a studio and then lip synched when they were live on stage. Milli Vanilli had no input NO voices in any of the songs. They were just models hired for looks for the shallow public to look at because the producers felt the original singers were not attractive enough to sell the records
Exactly. That’s literally the story of Milli Vanilli. Not just because they got caught lip syncing. Many artists were doing it at the time, the difference was they were lip-syncing to their own vocals. I said in my comment the only other music act that should get compared to them is Black Box, vocals by Martha Wash. i don’t understand why the comments are trying to have a discourse over lip-syncing when that’s just not the point of Milli Vanilli’s story..
I feel for them. They meant well and deserved better. They were just so talented and it's sad they couldn't sing there own songs. I'm glad they stood up to their manager. I'm just sad it ruined their career and Robs dead.
I always thought they were related! The resemblance is uncanny. I don't care who sang the songs but I loved them and still do to this day. I can't help but feel sorry for them. They were taken advantage of.
Did the actual singers get paid? This was not all of their fault. Shame that they paid the ultimate price when it was the schemes of the people behind the music.
lip synching was ALWAYS popular, not just after Milli Vanilli. Top of the Pops, Solid Gold, American Bandstand, there's a whole history of it... and the Producer "making" an act. Frank Farian did this all before with Boney M in the 70s There seemed to have been a lot more in the 80's too. Mostly dance acts... C and C Music Factory was another with Martha Walsh. Jocelyn Brown samples. It doesn't seem to be a problem if they get paid, but to pretend someone better looking is singing in the videos or on stage. It's sad these two had to take the fall for an entire system. C and C didn't get a grammy, but they were nominated.
THAT performance on July 21, 1989 happened at the Lake Compounce Amusement Park in Bristol, Connecticut where the duo performed there as part of the Club MTV tour. They were in the middle of "Girl You Know It's True" when the tape got stuck forcing them to mime the lyric "Girl You Know It's Girl You Know It's Girl You Know It's" over and over again in which Rob ran off stage in panic although nobody in the audience seemed to care according to Julie Brown who was present at the time but Kurt Lauder claimed there were a number of reporters out there that had something to say about the line repeating incident. And this was the least of Lake Compounce's worries. The nail in the coffin on live concert performances came when Guns and Roses failed to appear a sold out show over there two years later causing a riot in the park as at least 12,000 tickets were sold. And it came after the "camera" incident in the midwest. As a result of the park's inability to make up for the losses, Lake Compounce was closed for two consecutive years (1992 & 1993) before slowly rejuvenating to a theme park a few years later and there were no more concerts for the next three decades. When they did hold concerts in 2023, Guns and Roses were banned from ever performing there again and it's uncertain if Fabrice Morvan will bring his act "Fabrice Morvan sings the songs from Milli Vanilli' to Lake Compounce again although he does sing this time around.
Exactly everyone in the comments and the channel that made this video seem to be confused and think them getting caught lip syncing was why they received so much backlash.
Lip Syncing is one of the most important aspects to RuPaul’s Drag Race Race, deciding who stays or goes to the next episode, Plus it’s featured in many sketches. It’s treated as an art form. Lip Synch Assassins 😊
I don’t think the issue with Milli Vanilli was them lip-syncing. The issue was that they were lip-syncing to OTHER people’s vocals. That’s the backlash. Not them lip-syncing. People didn’t have much of an issue with Janet, Britney, or JLo lip-syncing because at least they were lip syncing to their own recorded vocals. Yeah it’s more acceptable today than back then, but that isn’t what the issue was regarding Milli Vanilli. If it was their own vocals, i think they would’ve continued for many more years.
Ahhh High School.... They were on the radio constantly. I liked ALL music back then. They had some good songs. I had zero issues with lip-syncing and still don't have any. It's entertainment. Back then, Milli Vanilli performed at all these "little kids" shows like Don't Just Sit There, Total Panic, and The New Mickey Mouse Club, among all things.
@@lknanml Indeed. I watched a lot of Nickelodeon back in 1989 and my then 7 year old sister was an avid New Mickely Mouse Club fan. So we were both aware of Milli Vanilli's popularity long before the scandal. 1989 was the calm before the storm.

You can’t just compare artists of today’s lip/syncing to Milli Vanilli. They did not sing a single note on their album. That’s not the case with these other artists that lip-sync to their own songs. The only other act you can compare Milli Vanilli to is Black Box and C+C & Music Factory and the girl group Seduction

I can't remember one person caring about or bothered by the Milli Vanilli voice drama. What I do remember is everyone liked them, a lot, and being quite upset that suddenly they're forced to de-band just because of dubbed voices! Nobody CARED!
